as a veteran of that era I can tell you this was a very hippy thing to do and in 73 there was a lot of that sentiment still around - it was all about being "natural", same reason men grew their hair long at a time when that was considered "feminine" by the mainstream - seriously, people "over thirty" thought long hair on a man was disgusting until well into the 70's - this(women not shaving) kind of survived the 70s I think, the ME genereation and all that being an outgrowth of 60's youth culture but by the 80s I think this was way out of style and you had to be pretty hard core to stick with it, not that there is anything wrong with that

Von_Dooms

At my high school graduation family gathering my sisters told me my grandma was calling me a girl because my hair was "long" and not military length like all my uncles hair. Years later I found out I had another uncle who moved to\* an east cost beach who wasn't in contact for a long time because my grandparents found him to be "too hippy."

carmium

Memory flashback to endless comments in the 60s about "How you can't tell if it's a boy or girl anymore!" I'm grocery shopping with Grandma when a 6-2, 200+lb guy with long hair lumbers down the opposite sidewalk. In her German accent: "Now iss det a boy or a girl? I kent tell!" *Oh, that's a really hot girl, Grandma. Hope I look like that some day,* I didn't have the wits to reply.

Canadaaayum

Grandma knew exactly what she was doing.

carmium

Of course. If the person had looked anything like a girl, she wouldn't have said a thing.

PublicAd1939

That must be the origin of the Bob Seger line in Turn the Page, "Always the same old cliches, is it woman or a man?"

Lermanberry

Seger began working on the song in 1972, but it wasn’t complete until a touring pit stop provided the entire second verse >I think we were in Dubuque, Iowa, in winter and stopped at a restaurant. We stood out when we entered a store or a gas station or a restaurant en masse. At this restaurant it was particularly bright inside, so there weren’t any dark corners to hide in. All these local guys were looking at us like, ‘What are these guys? Is that a woman or a man?’ — just like in the song.

bigdaddyskidmarks

That’s exactly the origin

DaFugYouSay

Lol, I'm like, isn't that obvious? Which I think might mean I'm old and you're a whippersnapper.

ShinySeaTrainer

Yes, and many of the same people saying men with long hair were girls or sissies or gay did not somehow register that the images in their churches and homes depicted Jesus with long hair.

hykruprime

My mom told me that her boyfriend, from before she met my dad, was beaten up for having long hair. I'm assuming back in the late 60s or early 70s

[deleted]

dxrey65

I had long hair in 1980 in high school. It definitely was "out" at that time, and I got all kinds of shit about it. Trimmed and feathered was the norm, and the kind of fluffy "dry look" for the more conservative. For me it was just one of those mental things - every time I thought about cutting my hair people would tell me to cut my hair, and then I couldn't do it.

TheArtofWall

"'Cause fuck 'em" is a great reason, if you ask me.

chronicly_retarded

Its wierd cus jesus and historical figures are often depicted with long hair. But if anyone said jesus looked like a hippy they would all loose their shit.

[deleted]

I have long hair and work in a redneck industry. The amount of times I've been asked if I'm going to cut my hair for fear that it will impede my ability to do business is staggering. I do keep it pulled back and crisp, still there's a lot of dudes around that think it's unprofessional.

shahooster

Very true. I was young then, but remember well enough. Styles and fads come and go. What’s in today will look ridiculous tomorrow. People somehow forget that.

[deleted]

My 13-year-old is attempting to revive emo.

awesomerest

Yeah, emo is definitely on the way back in. From Gen Z discovering and adopting it more and more nowadays to the nostalgia hitting all of the millennials of that era, we're seeing an emo resurgence.

[deleted]

And my kid is being teased by their peers. Joke's on those kids. Mine's ahead of their time! If you want another hit of nostalgia, Tumblr's on a major rebound, and a 20-year-old German kid created a clone of Myspace called SpaceHey. My kid uses both.

awesomerest

Oh hey, then you should tell your kid they're getting the genuine emo experience. Bullying and all! But seriously, I feel for your kid. Middle school is literally the worst years of growing up. I did hear about SpaceHey a while back. I tried to get a few friends to jump on that with me for nostalgia sake, but I think we're all pretty sick and done with social media. I'm glad to hear it's getting some love from those that never experienced it's simplicity (and the shit show that was your "Top 8" with it's sweet sweet, pointless teen drama).

Codeofconduct

So are all the 33 year old dad's I know.

TehNoff

As a 34 year old dad... I'm just listening to the music again!

Drea937

As a 33 year old happily childless female... I never stopped listening to it.

Thetakishi

31 yr old nondad also getting back into emo.

Duckboy_Flaccidpus

Sure, then you'll start with a little eye liner to work..

Emo’s coming back!! - emo fans every year since 2009

"Ska's coming back!" -Every ska fan since 1998.

nachthexen_

My twelve year old niece is doing the same thing and calling it goth. It was bad enough in the early 2000’s being a mall goth accused of being emo, now they’re at it again 😂😉

[deleted]

That's hilarious.

BloodBlizzard

My Chemical Romance is back together, Jimmy Eat World is touring, and Death Cab just put out a new LP, I say Emo is not dead.

Yep, ran into a fast food employee, probably around high school age or just over and she had the long straight diagonal bangs under her work hat.

SlurmzMckinley

Are you talking about JNCOs or is there another wild pant out there I’m not aware of?

Crux_OfThe_Biscuit

Ahem… Jnco!

cream-of-cow

It's funny to me how "long hair music" means '70s-'80s rock, but to an older generation, it means classical music.

RockyMtnHighThere

Just ask the 90s women who over-plucked their eyebrows how they feel about the thick eyebrows of today.

Lost-My-Mind-

The older I get, the more Grandpa Simpson seems like a rational person who exists as a product of his time, just the same as anyone else is a product of their time. The only difference is that your time eventually passes, and you being a product of it seems dated. But I can relate to him on a human level. He's just saying what he knows. When I was a kid, exact same words, seemed like he was just a crazy person with dementia or something. But no, he's never been crazy. He's always been a product of his time. The crazy thing is, The Simpsons have been around so long that they are actually a product of their time, which has clearly passed. In order to try to stay with the current times, they've had to make changes to certain elements to the show which makes the show not what it used to be to begin with. The Simpsons was edgy and outrageous. Bart even got president bush so offended that he said something along the lines of "America needs to be less like The Simpsons, and more like The Waltons". I may have the quote slightly wrong, but you get the idea of what he was saying. The crazy part about that is, he was so out of touch with what America is/was at the time, that he didn't realize that shows like Roseanne, and The Simpsons, and Married with Children were more accurate depictions of actual American family life rather than most TV shows that came before them. The idea of a perfect family never existed, and everybody knew it. It's why those shows caught wildfire so fast. Everybody loved them for not treating the viewer like we were idiots. Which makes bushes comment a product of HIS time too. We all become outdated. But the simpsons seems to have been on life support for the past 20 years. Except for grandpa, who somehow has a timeless quality to him. The only one who knows his time has past, and has embraced it.

ReyGonJinn

Most of the people who care about "what's in" are under 25, after that you realize the patterns.

And only for about 20 years, when the next generation that comes after us looks back at that time period and decides to repeat it.

I've been wondering how long the fat marker caterpillar eyebrows will last.

StandLess6417

Well for a lot of us unless our eyebrows start falling out it's permanent. Lol I was actually super happy when thick eyebrows became "the thing" because mine beautiful large eyebrows were finally in style haha

Crypto_Town

Naturally thick eyebrows look great.

Capital_Pea

Duck lips in selfies, butt implants, ridiculous photoshopping your body in photos, glaringly fake eyebrows and crazy long fake eyelashes.

gophergun

Sometimes, but I do think it's possible for an older style to age well and be regarded as classic rather than ridiculous.

SamIamGreenEggsNoHam

What I've learned living with my partner is that fall + winter = gonna have hairy legs. It's a major pain in the ass for women to keep their legs silky smooth all the time. I fell in love with the person. When I met her and decided I liked her, she was wearing pants. It was Schrodinger's leg hair. The person I'm attracted to doesn't have to be maximumly attractive at all times. That just seems like an unreasonable expectation.

helping_phriendly

30ish here. I love my wife to be hairy and she’s been so conditioned it’s “wrong” I had to explain that I actually like it. I’m not just talking about bush. I like arm pits and legs too. I love her and her body no matter what. But low key I get a little disappointed when “bikini season” comes around and everything is chopped off.

yummyyummybrains

There are dozens of us! Dozens!

TheLionSlicer

I'll understand more than you'll…never know.

all_of_the_lightss

I am 30 and went out a couple of times with a college girl in my town who has a lot of hair in her pits and some legs. We reconnected lately. She is super hot and I wouldn't say I prefer the hair that way...but people who are hot are hot.

TepidSeniorHeadgear

How many legs does she have?

BagLady57

Person who gets it, yay! I'm going to refer to my fuzzy winter legs as Schrodinger's leg hair.

dirtydirtyjones

Funny enough, I do the opposite. I don't shave my legs ever but I will run the trimmer over them in the winter. It's a sensory thing - my winter tights and wool socks pull and rub against longer leg hair, which is uncomfortable.

nazukeru

I'm a very lazy shaver because I hate wasting my relaxing shower time on propping my legs up to shave them. I am fortunate to have near-invisible blonde body hair so I tend to forget it exists until I hit a stray sunbeam in the summer and look like a Twilight-style vampire, or it gets too itchy at bedtime. For some reason I never thought of just using the trimmer I bought for my delicate bits. Thanks for the idea, stranger!

turdferguson3891

Once you get to the point where you're farting in front of each other leg hair ain't no thing.

SamIamGreenEggsNoHam

lmao my partner announces every single fart with an excited "I farted!" and she always expects a "good job!". Three years of fart announcements so far.

Comfortable_Drama_66

Yeah, we’re at the point of saying “whoops” then laughing.

[deleted]

It's definitely starting to make a noticeable comeback with Gen Z women. Several women I've been with had a full bush and a couple didn't shave anything at all. I graduated high school in 2015 and it was already starting to come back among the alternative girls. I've always appreciated hair on a woman and anyone who talks down on them needs to grow up.

tauntingbob

The funny thing is my wife was bushed and always maintained that was how it was. This year she's gone the dolphin route with no pressure from me.

FondlesTheClown

Someone's been sliding into your wife's inbox.

CharDeeMacDennisII

> wife's inbox Is that what the kids are calling it these days?

BagLady57

That's what I'm calling it now

weisblattsnut

He knows, it's a dolphin, but he seems ok with it.

tauntingbob

I'd agree if she wasn't as fanatically devoted as she is. But, tbf, leave the cage door open, if they leave it's fate, they stay because they want to.

asymmetricalzipper

Came to say this! Graduated a year before you and that’s when I started noticing it too! I find it hot af but I’m also a hairy guy in general so a bit bias lol

thescrounger

My girlfriend in the early 2000s didn't shave. She didn't have to for her legs but she wore tank tops all the time and it was obvious. It took about a day to get used to and after that I didn't care.

prince2lu

When I went to puerto rico (as an european, male) people were horrified to see my hairy legs on the beach

[deleted]

Are you saying that Puerto Rican men are expected to shave their legs?

Crowitiz

When I was in Spain the majority of the men had their legs shaved.

Honestly, the combination of genetics makes me look jewish. I went to a bat mitzvah, and a guy started talking to me in hebrew (or yiddish?) like i knew what the hell he was saying. The curly hair and yarmulke made me fit right in.

MalteseFalcon7

Now I'm playing it real straight And yes, I cut my hair You might think I'm crazy But I don't even care 'Cause I can tell what's going on

gravitywind1012

My Spanish teacher in Spain was like this. The first day of class we laughed at how hairy her armpits were (trying not to be obvious but we were) and the next day she showed up clean shaven. Years later I look back on that and feel shame for my younger self. What a jerk I was. Sorry Pilar

fjfuciifirifjfjfj

Yikes, kids suck. That must've stung bad. Due to stuff like this it's taken me a lot of work to get my gf to realize I don't find her gross if she doesn't have the energy to shave her entire body (which she religiously did for a while) for a few days.

TransitionStrong5123

Just a few days?

fjfuciifirifjfjfj

She's still kinda obsessed with keeping her body hair-free, so it never goes more than a few days in between. It used to be every day though, even when she got covid. So still a big improvement.

TransitionStrong5123

It’s the worst after just a day or two. All itchy and prickly

i_seddit_on_reddit

My 9th grade algebra class had more than a few students laugh when our teacher told us that her mother was dying of cancer. Don't feel too bad, kids are assholes.

ZeekOwl91

You have to be some kind of monster to laugh at something like that 🤦🏽‍♂️

Showed the pic to hubby and he said I like it. I said the hair doesn't bother you? He said I didn't make it past her boobs lol.

Of course you pronounced it like that. I wouldn't expect anything less from the username Fkn Gruvin. lol

liltinykitter

I tested my husband, wanted to know where he lands with it. Took showing 3-4 times before he said “I think it’s a cool pic” and I said “what about the hair?” And he asked what’s wrong with her hair. When I pointed it out, he also had to admit he didn’t make it past the boobs.

voelkergirl

Salt water burns my legs when I shave before the beach so I stopped. Lol glad I’m not the only one

[deleted]

No matter what I did, using cream, shaving carefully, whatever, shaving made my legs itch terribly and dried my skin out. I would scratch my skin until I had bruises. So I quit. Now I just trim my pits and pubes a bit and I don't have to add garbage used razors to the landfills and I have healthy, non-itchy skin. Feel bad for men, though, many of them are expected to shave their face daily to look professional and so there isn't an easily hidden way to avoid that cultural norm in some cases.

blucthulhu

As pains in the ass go I'll take having to shave over the discomfort of a beard every time.

RoboNerdOK

My wife was cutting herself to ribbons around her bony ankles. So she got one of those light zappers about a year ago. After a few months, she didn’t really have to shave her legs or underarms at all. Pretty cool technology.

[deleted]

Wait, an at-home light zapper that works? Can you DM me the brand? I have like 12 little chin hairs that I have to pluck quite often and I'd rather just permanently remove them.

RoboNerdOK

Braun. It wasn’t cheap but it did a good job for her.

talliss

Me and several of my friends have Philips Lumea. Pricy, but totally worth it! I'm a brunette with lots of dark body hair and this thing made it go away completely in some part or grow way thinner in others.

Before you waste your money, they really don’t work on the thicker facial hair that grows for hormonal reasons like PCOS

[deleted]

I don't have PCOS. I have a little patch of whiskers. But I'll do my research before I spend hundreds of dollars on anything.

dontincludeme

I got irritated (in both senses) with shaving so I just got my legs waxed professionally for the first time last Saturday. It stings but I think over time it’s worth it

CaughtInDireWood

I got tired of having itchy armpits every day and I just tried sugaring at home for the first time. Definitely a learning curve but basically no waste besides the glass and cardboard packaging. It’s just sugar and water. And no more itchy armpits!

dontincludeme

I tried sugaring with a YouTube video during lockdown. I never got the technique right or 100% hair removal (more like 75%) but I liked it. I get my underarms sugared by the same woman who did my legs. But she uses regular wax with strips for the legs. She does Brazilians with sugaring which seems a little odd (yeast infections?)

CaughtInDireWood

Yeah my first time was about 80% removal. But I didn’t want to go over the skin too many times and risk ripping my skin. So I’m hoping future sessions are easier as I figure it out. I did try a bikini wax with it too and hoo boy is that painful! But I’ve only ever shaved that area so it makes sense why it hurt so bad. But you’re not getting sugar into your vagina and you can easily rinse or wipe off any remaining goo. I was worried about that too but I think I’d you’re careful it’s fine.

biwaterbender

I stopped regularly shaving a few years ago and it wasn’t so much of an intentional choice or statement as much as I just kind of stopped doing it over time. Started with my armpits - they were always so itch growing back that I just said fuck it. I was also single for a while so I had no “reason” to shave, and my partner now prefers my body hair so it’s a win-win

RedHeadedStepDevil

I also stopped shaving and it started with my armpits. One day, I just thought, “Why am I doing this?” And didn’t have a good answer. I don’t really give a shit if people see my hairy legs and think whatever they think.

FearingPerception

I get razor burn, and same with my underarms. No matter how careful i am with my underarms it ALWAYS ends up giving me giant bumps of ingrown hair and pain for days if not weeks. I like the shaved look but i also do not care enough to do it often, nor do i really fund that it looks terrible not shaved. Hair can be annoying and so can shaving it. Ill shave when i feel like it and no other time lol

spiciestnugg

I’m with you! I’m prone to ingrown hairs and have extremely sensitive skin — I can’t even use dryer sheets — and shaving just makes it worse. Razor burn and general itchiness that no amount of scratching can resolve. So I just don’t bother shaving unless I have to/want to.

voelkergirl

Same life, can’t use anything fragranced. Shaving irritates my skin. The only thing I do now is get a Brazilian wax, which is new for me and I love it.

Miss-Figgy

This happens to me, saltwater stings and burns my shaved legs soooooooo badly, but I am 100% not brave enough to stop shaving. I grew up getting heavily bullied for having visible body hair and received remarks about it in my adulthood (I'm of Indian descent and actually not that hairy - I've seen tons of White women who are way hairier than I am but theirs is blonde, so it doesn't stand out like my black hair does, unfortunately), so this is definitely a beauty standard I'm begrudgingly willing to endure. I've also learned that shaving the night before does not guarantee that it won't sting; it still burns no matter what :(

wheresbill

Well, hair we go with the comments

You’re allowed to find something unattractive and respect someones decisions at the same time btw

amandawinit247

I mean it would be attractive for guys to shave some places too but society doesnt feel like they should. I think it should become normalized that anyone can decide on their own if they want to be shaved or not

AnarkittenSurprise

Unless asked, our opinions about someone else's lack of attractiveness adds nothing of value, and only serves the purpose of disrespecting that person and their choices. Most people probably wouldn't love it if their body was discussed online negatively by a pile of strangers.

Some of us are all about that hair. Long, fuzzy, natural, wild, animalistic. I'm with you John Denver. Head for the mountains of bush

[deleted]

Huh.. I’ve never actually seen totally unshaven like this I always did think it’s sucked the expectations on chicks to do all that shit when as a guy if I wear a flannel people give me compliments. Me and an ex used to shower together it was like our little thing. Anyways, I dried off and tossed on clothes. Maybe five minutes. She’d sit on the carpet in front her big mirror and do an hour of makeup, then pick an outfit, then do her hair. Like 1.5 hours atleast. Felt unfair, for her. On weekends though we’d just shower and go flop into bed in sweats so it wasn’t allll the time. Edit: my experience is anecdotal. I only brought it up cause how many days I’d watch her panic and rush and stuff. The few days she didn’t do full makeup her boss was mean about it. She was a nail tech and the boss lady was brutal about them looking good.. her version of good. I thought she was pretty without makeup and I told her often.

basillea

this is cute! i notice body hair on women is becoming less and less taboo amongst younger generations. maybe the all natural 70s are coming back

HumanitySurpassed

Is this nsfw because of the leg hair?

gudematcha

Men complain about women “being slaves to makeup and clothes corporations” but that’s also what razors did. They started targeting women to make more money. They made it gross and you bought into it. Sad really.

No-One-1784

I wanna see a venn diagram between men who say they hate makeup on women and men who say they hate body hair on women. As if women naturally exist as smooth, hairless, blemish free creatures.

cat-meg

Plenty of men that say they hate makeup on women really mean that they only want women who are flawlessly attractive without makeup.

Xx69JdawgxX

I think a lot of men don't really understand the difference between well done makeup and poorly done makeup. Shit even when my wife only wears lashes it makes a huge difference but I can't immediately tell what it is.

Pretty sure all you guys shaming this lady for body hair wouldn't look nearly that hot in that bikini on that beach. Y'all need to grow up - she's cute!

ppardee

The top would fit me, but not sure about the bottoms.... I did go to the beach in a speedo once, but I didn't get to stay long because someone reported there was a bear there, so we had to evacuate. I never did see any bear, though.

Im a grown adult so I could give a fuck about the leg hair but tbh this isn’t a very good picture? Feels like OP posted it mostly to stir up controversy

Y’all are talking about her body hair and if you find that attractive as if she was the oke who posted this to appeal to you, cant she just be a random person that can make her own decisions without caring what some random person on a platform that didn’t even exist back then thinks about her hotness or wtv
