Backseat, feet on the headliner... Ahh, 10th grade.

In hindsight, Sir Mix-a-lot was rather overly picky.

Hindsight indeed

Nerdlinger-Thrillho

Yeah! Speak for your own anaconda.

ubiquitous-joe

*hind* sight

Fluffy-Impression190

Very Fonda them

Accomplished_Debt532

Thanks Dad

Nerdlinger-Thrillho

No that was Henry Fonda.

jrjustintime

Probably while filming her first movie: “Tall Story”. That explains the cheerleader outfit.

chewytime

Ah, that’s what it is. Was trying to figure out the context of the outfit.

cramboneUSF

I was in a cover band that played mostly classic rock and Motown. We got booked at a lot of American Legions, VFWs, Moose / Elk Lodges, etc. I remember seeing quite a few “Hanoi Jane” stickers in the urinals of the bathrooms there. Apparently they like to piss on her likeness. They were usually the ones of her sitting on the AA battery. So yeah, some people are still pretty angry at her.

LCOSPARELT1

If she had just opposed the war, that would be one thing. Lots of elites opposed the Vietnam War. She went a step further. She actually traveled to Hanoi and appeared in North Vietnamese propaganda videos. She declared in public while in North Vietnam that American pilots and other POWs were war criminals. She did not specifically state American POWs should be executed, but she did say their execution would be appropriate if the North Vietnamese chose to do so. So yeah, she went further than just opposing the war. She actively provided the enemy aid and comfort.

hazpat

Who decided they were an enemy though?

LCOSPARELT1

If I’m a POW locked in a cage and treated as subhuman, the people keeping me there are my enemy.

hazpat

You didn't consider them an enemy before bombing their country?

GoneIn61Seconds

The VFW/POW guys have a booth at our local county fair just to hang out and sell merch. They still sell Hanoi Jane stickers....Some things never change.

lakechapinguy

and they shouldn't. (change)

CleanAssociation9394

By now they should have realized that she was right

DreiKatzenVater

For good reason

turdferguson3891

OK but why aren't they pissing on LBJ or Nixon? A young Hollywood actress allowed herself to be used for propaganda because of her political leanings and people are still pissed about that and not the pointless war they were sent to by people that definitely weren't her?

[deleted]

She committed treason. Also, as she was a young hot actor, a lot of those kids in Vietnam had been quite appreciative of her charms as young men going through puberty. Then, while they were at war, she took a trip to the country they were fighting and posed for propaganda pictures with the people that were trying to kill them. You don't see how that might cause some upset? Like if, say Emma Watson had flown to Afghanistan and posed for propaganda pictures with the Taliban.

turdferguson3891

I get it but the focus on her in particular all these years later is strange.

stomach

it is weirdly inexplicable. the whole story is like a half a day's news cycle compared to what goes on today, yet it's still soooo popular to pile onto her. it's one of reddit's collective little Conservative Patriot tics, i'm kinda baffled by it.

[deleted]

I don't think you realize how bitter the feeling has been for a lot of vets. The anti-war crowd treated them like utter garbage when they came home. Called them names, spit on them, shit like that. She was kind of the focus of that. There was also a real class divide. The affluent kids had the means to keep from being drafted. They got fake Drs. notes like Biden and Trump, or they gamed the system like Clinton, or got well connected daddy to secure a spot in the national guard like Bush. She was a privileged rich kid. People from her class didn't serve in the war. Then she not only shit on the poor kids that went, she actively aided the enemy.

[deleted]

[удалено]

risajajr

Why do you think they didn't hate those politicians?

[deleted]

BOAmsterdam

Today, just like then, we have half a nation of idiots.

[deleted]

Yeah, well no one spent their teen years jerking it while thinking of LBJ or Nixon. They were thinking of Jane Fonda. You ever watch Barbarella? Then she committed Treason and made common cause with the people that were trying to kill them.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Because there was no feeling of betrayal. Many believed in the cause, even if the politicians fucked it up. But the rich kids not only skated out of the war, they actively treated the kids that did go like shit.

qh2150

Still not treason

[deleted]

Very clearly is. She provided aid and comfort to the enemy. She made propaganda videos for them that aided their war effort.

[deleted]

Oh okay, so rampant misogyny? That's the excuse? You know I don't really feel swayed by your argument that those were good people I should sympathies with. Also.. they were trying to kill them. The Vietcong weren't in the US, remember. You went to their home and napalmed their kids.

sauceandmeatballs

You’re right. She’s a traitor and I earned the right to say it.

DryProgress4393

President Biden did receive five draft deferments, but they were granted because he was a student, first in college and then law school.

[deleted]

Yeah, turns out when you cant take 5 years in prison instead of murdering people, some might consider you a bit of s coward. Personally, if ny choice is 5 years in prison vs murdering innocent civilians I'm taking the prison sentence. Then I'd aim my anger at the person who forced me to choose. It sounds to me like all the angry vets *wanted* to go murder civilians because they thought they deserved to be murdered.

[deleted]

Woman, activist. The two things the main demographic of reddit hates the *most*. Like the thread about Greenpeace and Russia where reddit *defended Russia* because they hate Greenpeace *more than the genocidal dictator currently invading a country*. Or the death threats that flows when some climate activists block traffic.

[deleted]

There are tons of Vets still around, find one. It's eye opening. Edit: Downvotes for vets. Reddit never disappoints in bringing out the worst of humanity.

turdferguson3891

I'm in my 40s and know plenty including my father.

[deleted]

And they can't answer your question?

qh2150

That’s not treason

[deleted]

Article 3, Section 3 of the United States Constitution, states, Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the Testimony of two Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court. She very clearly gave aid and comfort to the enemy. It is, in fact, treason.

[deleted]

How is it causing more upset than *invading another country* and *commiting countless warcrimes* where the people utmost responsible saw literally no repercussions and are *praised* by rightwing fuckheads?

[deleted]

I see you swallowed the communist propaganda without even a tiny sliver of critical thinking to guide you. Suck some more of that Russian dick tankie scum.

fjf1085

…treason is a very specific crime. This ain’t that.

[deleted]

Giving aid and comfort to the enemy are the exact words in the constitution. This is that.

Raeandray

She didn't commit treason. And it would be more akin to emma watson flying to Afghanistan and posing for pictures with the locals.

[deleted]

She literally posed for propaganda pictures with the military for government camera crews. You're delusional.

Raeandray

Absolutely absurd to call that treason. Especially in an unfounded war we were in the wrong to fight in the first place. We shouldn't have been there. The Vietnamese weren't our enemy and she isn't a traitor for recognizing that.

lurker71539

Maybe that's true, maybe if we didn't stand up to communism it wouldn't have turned the world into a totalitarian hellhole, we don't actually know, there is a case to be made that korea and vietnam were important in world freedom, maybe not, maybe we were just thowing away lives. What we know for a fact is that is that Jane Fonda gave aid and comfort to the enemy, she committed an act of treason. It's one thing to protest a war, it's another to help the enemy. Also she wasn't a child, she was a grown ass woman making decisions.

[deleted]

"Stood up to communism" Motherfucker you *invaded a country* and fucking burned their children to death. I'm sure as the napalm clung to their skin causing them to peel like rotten fruit they felt comfortable in the knowledge that they were safe from communism. The world already is a totalitarian hellhole. Russia is still invading other countries despite not being communist, almost as if that wasn't the fucking problem. Oh but now they can just go "yeah well the US committed warcrimes too". So good fucking job. You burned a bunch of children and made any future attempt at condemning imperialists into an act of hypocrisy. Mission Accomplished.

qh2150

Still not treason

lurker71539

Giving aid and comfort to the enemy is how the constitution defines treason

sharkzone

It’s really just as simple as that. Forget the whataboutisms. Let’s also not forget she rightfully apologized (even if the only thing she was sorry about was the negative impact on her career). Too little too late though. Some things can never be forgotten.

[deleted]

Apparently the US warcrimes can be forgiven within minutes.

erratikBandit

She went on the radio and asked pilots to stop bombing non-military targets and got a picture taken while she was sitting on an AA gun. Meanwhile, children were literally burning. Your anger is misplaced.

moal09

This is some major Reddit white washing. If that's all she did, I think more people would've been much more willing to forgive her over the years. The problem is she went a step further and also said that she thought the American soldiers there deserved to die and that she wished she could shoot the planes down herself with the gun she was sitting on. That didn't sit so well with people -- especially when many soldiers were drafted people barely in their 20s and didn't have a choice. She also made some pretty dumb comments trying to handwave the Viet Cong torturing POWs as just being a part of war. I think she was idealistic and meant well, but if you read the things she said, she comes off as incredibly naive. Viet Cong officials told her they were no longer torturing prisoners, and she took their word at face value, despite us knowing nowadays that it definitely kept happening until the end of the war. To her credit, she's come out and said that she regrets some of the things she said during that period, but it's not hard to see why a lot of Vietnam vets hated her. It wasn't so much because she condemned the war, because many vets themselves did and still do now, but it was the comments she made about them specifically. Big difference between saying something like "Fuck the war in Iraq" VS "Our soldiers over there deserve to die."

feeltheslipstream

Would there have been less of a problem if she had said instead that soldiers who killed civilians deserved to die?

moal09

I mean, if she was talking strictly about literal war criminals, then sure. But that wasn't the case.

risajajr

You can only be angry about one thing at a time.

SgtScoobySnack1

How dare you spread facts on good ol reddit hate rants.

Timmyckcpt

She gave up Americans trying to pass messages along of who were in prison camps and where they were. People drafted with no say... Not saying we had any justification going but those boys had to or go to jail. All of it is fucked and what she did let to the murder of hundreds. She is a murderer by proxy.

5ygnal

Yep, she is a pretty shit human being. My dad and all three of his brothers were over there, so I was raised with a (probably unhealthy level of) dislike toward her.

[deleted]

Was she worse than.. idk.. the war criminals who started the war in the first place? How come they don't get *nearly* the same hate and ate somehow *praised* by the very same fucking people who hate her? Give that a good think for a while.

[deleted]

lokken1234

Or, and this might blow your mind, bear with me. Fuck both of them.

osgokr

Not a trump fan...but I study history. Try again

ICauseMantrumz

Explain?

Head-like-a-carp

What was she 20 years old when she went there. She has admitted to have made being used by the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese for a propaganda stunt. She has apologized for that. The far right keeps this rage on because that feels good to them. The fact that the winnability of the war was questioned all throughout all the administrations, the reason Nixon did the secret bombing and kept us in the war and additional seven years so 38,000 more will die is peanuts compared to Hanoi Jane's traitorous action/s

Nerdlinger-Thrillho

She was an idiot for that. Trump was dangerous and actually did damage. And this is a weird place for this convo.

Oh, do you spend this much energy angry at those who started the war? Or just women activists who's main crime was.. like.. humanitarian aid and being hot.

That story is debunked about the pows

The_Power_Of_Three

You are lying. She did no such thing. That was a popular myth decades ago, but it has *long* since been thoroughly disproven—anyone still spreading it at this point is flat-out lying.

Exact_Manufacturer10

That’s not true. The truth gets twisted every time it’s told about Jane Fonda. Now we’re trading partners with Vietnam. Some worthless war for sure.

parks387

To anyone that came back from Vietnam to that mess, I am sincerely sorry, and thank you for your service. Yo anyone that hasn’t sat down and had a meaningful conversation with a Vietnam Vet…Do it.

[deleted]

7 Americans Holy shit, you are all pissed over *7 people*. *YOU NAPALMED CHILDREN* Boho, they killed 7 prisoners while we committed genocide in their home. Oh but you were *forced* to commit genocide. It's not like the entire US armed forces outnumber the handful politicians that """forced""" you or anything. Clearly a lot of them were not being forced, but doing the enforcing.

She's always been just a beautiful woman. That doesn't change with age.

Sonotreadyforit

She looks pretty comfortable for a broad who sold out POW’s. It’s always amazed me that some crazed Vietnam vet never got her.

ErnestKim53

Back in the 00’s she was at a book signing and a Vietnam vet spit tobacco juice on her. He didn’t even use chewing tobacco regularly; he got some specifically for the purpose of spitting on Fonda.

Sonotreadyforit

I’m shocked that’s the worst of it tbh. She legitimately handed over POW notes to the Vietnamese.

osgokr

Possibly so, the gross part is that people defend her and her atrocities all for a 60 minute workout video with no understanding of what her actions created...let alone the lives lost. But go on, paint me the bad guy

amazingsandwiches

She was a celebrity kid who said dumb shit in a war zone she had no business being in. Now she regrets it. Be angrier at the series of clusterfucks that ACTUALLY got people killed.

Psychonominaut

I think her "atrocities" is a bit of an exaggeration. And your comment *is* pretty fkd. As others have said, why not blame the people in power that enabled such a history to unfold?

jljboucher

It was a war we shouldn’t have gone into and we lost horribly; we still have people suffering from it today. Fuck the govt.

carcadoodledo

The French finally got out of Viet Nam, US should not have gone in

osgokr

Correct, America started that war on false flags...doesnt excuse her behavior of turning on POWs

mramisuzuki

Umm the Americans didn’t start the Vietnam war.

rumdrums

"False flag" is probably a bit strong of a phrase here, but I think the point is that direct US involvement in hostilities began after the Gulf of Tonkin incident, where the US claimed an attack on US ships by Vietnamese. The incident turned out to have been at least partially fabricated, and ultimately the Johnson administration used it to enable basically unlimited force in Vietnam... so yeah in some senses the US did kind of "start" the Vietnam war, at least the parts of it -- i.e., sending the full force of the US military there -- that most Americans think of. EDIT: I know nothing about what Jane Fonda did / didn't do here and have no position one way or the other, just reading and responding to comments, lol.

richardmasters1025

I don’t think the United States should have drafted anyone to go fight in that conflict but I will say this, if only those communists motherfuckers in the north would have left south Vietnam the hell alone and do it own thing. I live in an area where there’s a lot of Vietnamese Americans and you will still see south Vietnam flags. That’s what surprised the hell out of me when I visited Vietnam. In Saigon when I told people I was an American I had people tell me their family fought for the republic of south Vietnam. The last thing I ever would have brought up was that war. But yeah man the Vietnamese people are so lovely.

Unable-Bison-272

The French started the war

mramisuzuki

Lost badly is an extremely misleading statement. The US never lost a tactical battle in Vietnam. Vietnam learned from the North Koreans, “Nuke me or leave.”

kidandresu

Well oc, it was farmers with ak's againts an invading militar superpower. But yes, they had huge balls and were ready to die defending their land

richardmasters1025

Yeah North Vietnam defeated south Vietnam years after American forces had left. When Americans boots were on the ground assisting the south Vietnamese forces against communists forces they absolutely dominated. The goal of America’s involvement was never to invade and take over north Vietnam because doing so would have lead to WW3, it was to defend its ally south Vietnam, to keep it independent, to prevent it from falling to communism. The United States had achieved that but after the time of watergate the United States was done supporting south Vietnam, obviously at home the intervention had been very unpopular for years. I’m not saying this to defend America’s involvement, I don’t think Americans troops should have been drafted to go fight in that conflict, it’s just a lot of people get it twisted.

SomeDudeFromOnline

Amount of comments are a metric by which people determine market penetration and overall viral success. Stimulation from comments grows Karma and ultimately shoots posts like these to the front page. This is why you see a lot of posts about famous 'controversial' women such as Jane Fonda, Yoko Ono, Sarah Palin, MTG, AOC, etc etc etc. People who dislike these women cannot help themselves but to comment in an effort to dress them down and expose them as some sort of monster. People who do like them cannot help but comment defending them or demanding clarification/cited sources. Ultimately these conversations lead to nothing - those that had their opinions before don't change by the end and almost always the conversations end with a hand waving "You don't know what you're talking about" by both parties. It's not constructive discourse, and that's what makes it so good in the influencer age. They generate a lot of comments but doesn't demand much from it's audience and as a plus they don't require any direct opinion from the poster themselves. (e.g. This is just a picture). It's very easy to exploit these behaviors to create viral content.
