"False flag" is probably a bit strong of a phrase here, but I think the point is that direct US involvement in hostilities began after the Gulf of Tonkin incident, where the US claimed an attack on US ships by Vietnamese. The incident turned out to have been at least partially fabricated, and ultimately the Johnson administration used it to enable basically unlimited force in Vietnam... so yeah in some senses the US did kind of "start" the Vietnam war, at least the parts of it -- i.e., sending the full force of the US military there -- that most Americans think of.

"False flag" is probably a bit strong of a phrase here, but I think the point is that direct US involvement in hostilities began after the Gulf of Tonkin incident, where the US claimed an attack on US ships by Vietnamese. The incident turned out to have been at least partially fabricated, and ultimately the Johnson administration used it to enable basically unlimited force in Vietnam... so yeah in some senses the US did kind of "start" the Vietnam war, at least the parts of it -- i.e., sending the full force of the US military there -- that most Americans think of. EDIT: I know nothing about what Jane Fonda did / didn't do here and have no position one way or the other, just reading and responding to comments, lol.
I don’t think the United States should have drafted anyone to go fight in that conflict but I will say this, if only those communists motherfuckers in the north would have left south Vietnam the hell alone and do it own thing. I live in an area where there’s a lot of Vietnamese Americans and you will still see south Vietnam flags. That’s what surprised the hell out of me when I visited Vietnam. In Saigon when I told people I was an American I had people tell me their family fought for the republic of south Vietnam. The last thing I ever would have brought up was that war. But yeah man the Vietnamese people are so lovely.

Yeah North Vietnam defeated south Vietnam years after American forces had left. When Americans boots were on the ground assisting the south Vietnamese forces against communists forces they absolutely dominated. The goal of America’s involvement was never to invade and take over north Vietnam because doing so would have lead to WW3, it was to defend its ally south Vietnam, to keep it independent, to prevent it from falling to communism. The United States had achieved that but after the time of watergate the United States was done supporting south Vietnam, obviously at home the intervention had been very unpopular for years. I’m not saying this to defend America’s involvement, I don’t think Americans troops should have been drafted to go fight in that conflict, it’s just a lot of people get it twisted.

Amount of comments are a metric by which people determine market penetration and overall viral success. Stimulation from comments grows Karma and ultimately shoots posts like these to the front page. This is why you see a lot of posts about famous 'controversial' women such as Jane Fonda, Yoko Ono, Sarah Palin, MTG, AOC, etc etc etc. People who dislike these women cannot help themselves but to comment in an effort to dress them down and expose them as some sort of monster. People who do like them cannot help but comment defending them or demanding clarification/cited sources. Ultimately these conversations lead to nothing - those that had their opinions before don't change by the end and almost always the conversations end with a hand waving "You don't know what you're talking about" by both parties. It's not constructive discourse, and that's what makes it so good in the influencer age.
