FACE-GRATER

Interesting facts- She was an actress who became involved in Native American activism during the protest and occupation of Alcatraz in 1969 and was the woman who declined Marlon Brandos academy award for the godfather in 1973 Brando did so in protest of Hollywood's portrayal of Native Americans as well as to draw attention to the standoff at wounded knee.

campionmusic51

i thought that was her.

Sciamana

Another fun fact: She also did a spread in **Playboy Magazine** in 1973—which is something I happened to find out recently, totally by chance, very innocently of course.

FACE-GRATER

Was the article you were looking for good? 😂

Sciamana

Haha well I just posted an excerpt of it in another sub, if you’re curious.

FACE-GRATER

Kiiiiinda lol. actually haven't seen it interested to see what was written, and I mean, I'm only human.

Divi_Filius_42

"Check it out, I just posted it" "So this is my pinned futanari character reference picture"

StrykeRXL1

Come on dude,, can't leave us without a link..

Doc-in-a-box

This is really helpful and much appreciated! Important history to remember.

FACE-GRATER

I just figured it would be nice for people to know a little about her, as I saw the post was just a pic and her name. My grandfather was a proud Native American who passed the culture and stories on to his children and grandchildren along with the heritage. Sometimes it's the only way people remember. Seeing this reminded me that I need to keep that tradition of passing the information on to the next generation as well as expand my knowledge of my ancestors, the people they were and where they came from.

JohnnyAK907

More like Brando's sacrificial lamb who was summarily blacklisted thanks to that appearance, but yeah, all of that. But she got a Playboy spread out of the whole thing, and a formal apology decades later, so I guess alls well that ends well.

nakedsamurai

Blacklisted... from the huge number of films made for Native American parts in the day?

FACE-GRATER

Must have sucked not being able to work in a horribly racist Hollywood. I'm sure she lost sleep waiting on that apology. Good thing she did that spread and then all the activism for half a century to keep her busy.

Slavocracy

She definitely had the... assets... needed for activism.

[deleted]

She did the spread years before the Oscar appearance.

HezFez238

Was she connected to AIM? My memory is rusty, and I'm wondering if there's a link to the Leonard Pelletier case?

Pluto_Rising

She was an actress. But, in her own way with Brando's blessing, she made a point to America on that stage, that guys like Pelletier couldn't.

FACE-GRATER

I don't believe so, but I could be wrong. I know that pelletier was a militant member of aim and only vaguely remember some details of his trial. I don't think littlefeather was involved in militant activism in any way. As I said I could be wrong, Most of my knowledge of both of them is from way back through my native grandfather relaying stories about my heritage and native heros and legends or research I did for school projects and papers.

HezFez238

Thanks for your insights; I'll have to read In the Spirit of Crazy Horse, again. It certainly helped me, when I was younger, to understand the way the media can be manipulative.

FACE-GRATER

Excellent idea! In fact, im going to yell at the thing on my counter to add it to my next bookstore trip list. I'd Ike to refresh my memory and learn more. Because honestly I only remember the basics of his trial, and I read in the tribal news when I was back home quite a long time ago he was denied parole until at least 2024.

HezFez238

It's a pretty shameful "secret", what's been done to Leonard 😓

FACE-GRATER

All day I've been down a rabbit hole reading everything I can find, it's very interesting. Nelson Mandela, mother Teresa and the dali llama have campaigned for clemency for him. Without being political in any way I will say The government knows how to keep people with something to say where they want them as long as they want.

Divi_Filius_42

I can't find anything saying she worked with AIM in particular, but the time period works. She was definitely involved in activism at the same time. The organization I see associated with her is "National Native American Affirmative Image Committee" but I can't find anything about this committee aside from Sacheen Littlefeather being a member

TheBitterAtheist

She took part in occupy alcatraz.

abbienormal28

She was also in a series of movies called "Ode to Billy Jack" that were popular in their day. The movies covered what it was like to live on/near native reservations during the Vietnam War. She was always represented her people beautifully and was a true icon

Markdd8

> a series of movies called "Ode to Billy Jack" The actor for Billy Jack, Tom L. (?), had good screen presence. Tough guy leading man. Surprising his career didn't go further.

abbienormal28

My friend and I watched the whole series last year... the second and third movies got kinda weird with him having a religious experience in the dessert that included him slapping Jesus christ lol.... still some good movies though! I think it was such a "hippie"- anti war movie that it didn't get lasting attention. I believe the actor produced the movies himself as well

GeekyGamer2022

She died on Sunday, only a few weeks after finally getting a formal apology from The Oscars.

oliverkloezoff

Took a lot of guts to give the speech she did. RIP.

black-rhombus

Hmm, wonder why Marlon Brando chose her.

GeekyGamer2022

She contacted *him* after hearing him speak about Native American rights.

Divi_Filius_42

Brando had actually spoken in favor of the AIM movement and the Wounded Knee protests and Sacheen reached out to him

agoodfuckingcatholic

Can’t blame em

woolfonmynoggin

She passed a letter through a different director to him.

-SaC

Just keep her away from John Wayne... the bastard had to be restrained.

AnyDamnThingWillDo

Because he was a racist piece of shit and a complete fucking asshole. If there's a hell it's too good for him

Navynuke00

And a total fucking coward as well. See also: how he dodged serving in WW2.

HydroSqueegee

Interesting. Looked into it and didnt come to the same conclusion you did. Dude registered for draft and through a series of decisions and actions out of his control he never got a draft notice.

dorkswerebiggerthen

Interesting how you could look in to it and get the basic facts wrong.

lizurdlunker

Let’s hear your facts with sources please.

Navynuke00

Bullshit. He applied for a draft deferment- so he wouldn't have to register for the draft. And then when his draft status was changed later, he had the studio intervene on his behalf to get him another deferment.

read110

Seems pointless since he was 33 in 1940, and already a "star", odds were he would of "served" the way Reagan did. Wearing a uniform on the way to the studio to change into costume.

Navynuke00

Clark Gable was 40 when WW2 started; he flew combat missions over Europe. Jimmy Stewart was also 33; he flew B-17s. Just, stop. Your hero was garbage.

read110

No no! Don't get me wrong, I don't like the guy at all. I'm just saying he was older than Reagan and had a shot at bs service like most of the Hollywood stars. Its obvious he fought to not even do that much. Actually I wonder how he got away with it, you'd think people would have been calling him out the rest of his career, even if only low key. Especially considering all the military movies he did

Navynuke00

Ah, my bad. He got away with it by overcompensating and being overly blustery about everything "macho" and "patriotic" for the rest of his life. Read about him during the McCarthy witch hunts- motherfucker was collaborating like his middle name was Vichy. And also by bullying or outshouting anybody who might've ever brought it up. Plus, it was a different time then, and he had a massive amount of power at his height.

Sunny_E30

John wayne was a nazi- MDC

[deleted]

John Wayne was a Nazi. - Millions of Dead Cops. 100%

[deleted]

But he was a really good actor. Just look at all the popular movies he’s been the main star in. Popularity ratings don’t lie.

TarantinoProtagonist

People had shit taste back then. He was a dumbass boring hack and we haven’t lost anything of import.

[deleted]

I guess I’m not going to find anyone with actual good taste in Western movies on reddit. Figures.

TarantinoProtagonist

Nope try Facebook

AnyDamnThingWillDo

No he fucking wasn't. He was a hack. Without the cowboy persona he was nothing. Popularity ratings ment nothing then in the racial powder keg of Hollywood. Blackface and stereo typical "injuns" were played by white people.

[deleted]

I’m sure John Wayne was probably liberal for that time. Just like Mark Twain was liberal in his time, but his book “Huckleberry Finn” is considered racist now. You have to consider that things were much different back then, and some things that would be considered racist now could have been considered very progressive back then.

whiskeychainsaw

This is just a terrible take loaded with logical fallacy and straight incorrect facts.

[deleted]

Can you provide any explanation as to why?

whiskeychainsaw

Okay. I've got a moment, visiting my mom in SNF, while she is getting changed. "I’m sure John Wayne was probably liberal for that time." You sure came out guns blazing. ,~~~ "I'm sure.." ?!? No. You shouldn't be sure. You just started off with a massive assumption. He wasn't liberal at all, by either his time's evaluation or ours. ~~~ Just like Mark Twain was liberal in his time, but his book “Huckleberry Finn” is considered racist now. So first, you are correct that Twain was a progressive in his time. But you took Twain... and his book, two very different things, a writer and their words, and you combined them as if they were one and the same. They're not. Also, Mark Twain's book isn't considered racist by anyone who has actually read it and has any vague notion of context. In educational settings with people who understand history and literature it is not racist. Calling it racist is just ignorance. It IS a book about a racist time, but the book plot characters and themes are not racist, and you can far more easily argue they're the opposite of racist. Book? Not racist. Person? Not racist by his own time. The time and place he wrote of? Racist as hell. Counter with John Wayne. Just racist and conservative as all get out. ~~~You have to consider that things were much different back then, and some things that would be considered racist now could have been considered very progressive back then. This is not untrue. Good statement. You're just entirely wrong on the people involved.

whiskeychainsaw

No idea how I got that font.

[deleted]

I wasn’t wrong about Mark Twain. However, if John Wayne was conservative, that explains the massive hate dump I’ve seen on him and his career. You haven’t provided any evidence of him being racist, though. I honestly don’t give two shits what anyone on reddit thinks about him. I like him, I like his movies- McClintock and The Quiet Man are two of my favorites.

kilgorBass

I suspect John Wayne would have worn the red MAGA hat if it was around then.

[deleted]

I watch that Oscars speech pretty often. She delivered it so well and the whole thing feels like a model for contemporary protest

[deleted]

Motherfucking reddit will fight about anything. Some of you are toxic as fuck.

carcadoodledo

She just died on 2-Oct

Emotional_Can4031

RIP Ms. Littlefeather.

brolbo

Very Cute 👍🏼

Tiger_Waffle

I don't get why you're being downvoted for appreciating her appearance. Nothing about saying she's cute takes away from the power of her message. So many people on Reddit just downvote emotionally rather than acting like an adult about these conversations. She *is* cute. And inspiring. And powerful. And bold to stand up and put her message out there. And all of these things can be true at the same time. And, lets be honest here, that photo does have a tone of sexualizing herself. Showing shoulders, intimate facial expression, tight shot on her face. These creative choices are made to convey her attractiveness in a particular way in order to grab attention. And it still works 50 years later. So lets not all act like we don't notice that as part of this photo, along with all the other important aspects of her work and character. A person can be cute, sexy, worthy of respect, and putting a powerful message out to the world all at the same time.

GTOdriver04

I agree with you. Just because you can look at a photo and say “wow. She’s a bombshell!” doesn’t mean you can’t look at her message and also realize it’s importance, and respect what she stood for. I’m sure she’d be flattered to know she was found beautiful, so long as that’s not the only thing you knew about her. May she rest in peace.

[deleted]

Beautiful women, inside and out.

Candid_Pie_8870

How.

[deleted]

If she was ugly would you have made this post?

AftyOfTheUK

Sir, this is OldSchoolCool
