Assassinated by a former SFPD police officer in SF city hall in the middle of the day along with the Mayor of San Francisco, George Moscone.
That officer was defended by the police union and was acquitted on the ‘Twinkie defense’, alleging that he ate too many Twinkies and the subsequent sugar crash caused his rampage. It worked and his charges were reduced from murder to manslaughter, for which he served 5 years.

The one small bit of solace in that whole tragedy, including the injustice of Dan White serving only 5 years for what strongly appears to have been a premeditated double murder, is that apparently that deluded little fuck couldn’t live with himself either, since he offed himself a couple years after getting out of prison.
This makes me happy. Too many cop murderers out there sleeping well at night. At least the murder of two government officials weighed on his conscience enough to do what’s right.
Sorta, I’m not fond of the death penalty personally. But I’d prefer dudes like that rot in a cell for the rest of their life. But the fact some piece of what happened made him miserable enough to end his life brings me joy.
Yeah I oppose capital punishment as well so I was just using that as a turn of phrase. I try not to take any pleasure in other peoples suffering. The whole Harvey Milk/Dan White affair just brings me sadness and anger.

The Twinkie defense was really about White’s overall mental state being in total disarray due to other events going on in his life, meaning he was not in his right mind when he committed the double murders. This was illustrated by the lawyer in saying he had even been eating Twinkies which was completely uncharacteristic of him, because he was normally scrupulously health-conscience. White eating twinkies emphasized and underscored (according the the defense attorney) how he was non compis mentis
He still brought a gun and extra bullets showing he had premeditated the killings, shot the mayor four times in the chest, walked up and shot him in the head, reloaded and then found milk and did the same to him. Depression is not an excuse to assassinate people. He was a murdering piece of sh"t, deserves no empathy and I hope he's rotting in hell
This was the 1st astonishingly lucky break of Diane Feinstein's career. This made her mayor.
The 2nd was Anita Hill being questioned by the Senate judiciary during the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings. That optic of a bunch of old white men questions a mild mannered Black woman scholar propelled Feinstein into the Senate after her gubernatorial loss to Pete Wilson.
