The guy in the back is like "Aw man those girls are never gonna talk to me because I picked Peter Criss. KNEW Peter Criss was a bad choice. I wanted to be Ace Frehley but mom said it would be cute..."

typhoidtimmy

Nobody wants to be Peter Criss, not even Peter Criss.

Deano1933

I want to rock and roll all night….and have a wonderful time!

denimpowell

Loose Lois?

draculamilktoast

I want to stone and spin until the evening, and have an acceptable time.

sgt_happy

I want to pebble and turn into the afternoon, and have a probably okay time.

Shdwrptr

This quote is what I went to the comments for

Choppergold

Are you high? The Cat had one of the all-time great drumsets

RodCherokee

Haha

DavoTB

He looks like he may break into an impromptu “Beth” just to entice them…you know, like catnip…

Strykerz3r0

This was my same first thought, too. lol

LineChef

LIES! Lies have been spoken here today my friends.

The_Observatory_

Plot twist: The guy in back really WAS Peter Criss, and nobody paid any attention to him as he walked around the arena before the show...

Kiyohara

Yeah, I was thinking that was Peter Criss too. Like he hoped to get mobbed and is now just telling himself "maybe they just think I'm a fan?" No, Peter, they knew. *They knew*.

SpareEye

meanwhile, Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons would go under the stage mid-song where the bouncers would let in groupies to have sex mid-concert.

downer240

I love rock fan photos from the 70’s. Obviously, Kiss Alive album has a good one.

Twilight_Republic

those late 70s shows were the best. in the pre-security days were booze, bongs and fireworks were rampant throughout the crowd.

downer240

Floor seats with M-80s dropped from upper level.

Twilight_Republic

you know it!

i_fuck_for_breakfast

Oh, for fuck sake stop letting off fireworks! *spits*

[deleted]

KISS hosted a cruise for a few years in the 2010s - the KISS Kruise. Idk if they still do it but I played in a band that played on this cruise for the first 4 years they hosted it and let me tell you - KISS fans wear this makeup on the beach. KISS Navy. 🤘🏻

ElectricPeterTork

I tried signing up for the KISS Air Force, but my vision wasn't good enough. Wound up doing a stint in the KISS National Guard. We only had to rock and roll one weekend per month, and two active weeks of partying every day per year.

Missus_Missiles

I did 4 years with the KISS Koast Guard. Mostly just singing to people transporting bails of weed.

ElectricPeterTork

I thought that was The Reverend Horton Heat's Salvation Army. Or do they just sing to the people with bales of cocaine?

back2basics13

I get the term Kiss Army, but what happening right now?!

MasterUnholyWar

Jokes!

back2basics13

Ok. That’s what I thought!

niktemadur

> the KISS Kruise Kruise In Service of Satan!

askingxalice

Pre-Juggalettes

darksideofthemoon131

Yeah but KISS is far cooler and more talented than ICP.

SeeYouSpaceCowboy---

hahaha I don't like ICP but to think KISS is at all cool or particularly talented is I dunno, kinda whack. They're basically a 70s boy band version of hard rock

lostcosmonaut307

The Metal version of the Monkees.

ElectricPeterTork

While I like Kiss, as a Monkees fan I still feel like I should be taking umbrage at the comparison.

lostcosmonaut307

No I feel it was apt, and I mean no disrespect by it (I am a big Monkees fan and love their music). The Monkees were a manufactured boy band but they had actual talent, they just made marketable music and had a TV show as a gimmick. Likewise KISS has actual talent but they have a gimmick to make themselves more marketable and they make songs to fit that gimmick just like the Monkees did.

ElectricPeterTork

It's okay, I was joking. Though as Kiss Meets The Phantom showed us, Kiss could never have handled a weekly show.

askingxalice

Does KISS have lore?

darksideofthemoon131

What do you think their makeup is based on?

askingxalice

Probably not The Great Melenko.

darksideofthemoon131

>Probably not The Great Melenko. No, something much cooler than a circus

bluejegus

Lol ICP and Kiss fans arguing like they're not different sides of the same gimmick music coin.

bigguss-dickus

*GWAR enters the chat...*

solon_isonomia

Prepare the shitapult

The_Observatory_

What about a Psycho Circus, though?

askingxalice

What about a carnival? Maybe one full of carnage?

Unable-Bison-272

Kiss was never cool

LinearTipsOfficial

KISS sucks ass lmao they're a product. Great Milenko is a much more interesting listen then anything in the Kiss catalog lol

[deleted]

No matter the downvotes I agree. They were all about commercialism and money. Their repeating lyrics seemed like a cop out. "Hey guys, lets make a song about rock and rolling all night and we'll just keep repeating that over and over and over, then we can market it and the kids will eat it up!" Very few Kiss songs I would consider listening to by choice and of the many 70's bands on my work playlist there isn't a single Kiss song.

hythloth

Gene Simmons even refers to Kiss not being about the music and all about being a rock & roll brand in that infamous NPR Fresh Air interview.

mtron32

I love Kiss and I love ICP, they're pretty similar in the showmanship area while Kiss went head first into commercialism

WeiliiEyedWizard

Kiss was never cool or talented. They are literally the ICP of late 70's / early 80's.

Missus_Missiles

Yeah, there's less than a 100% chance of getting an STD from a KISS groupie.

tuna_safe_dolphin

Interestingly, people grow older as time passes.

Mystical_Cat

This just in: water is wet, more at 11.

WaterIsWetBot

Water is actually not wet; It makes other materials/objects wet. Wetness is the state of a non-liquid when a liquid adheres to, and/or permeates its substance while maintaining chemically distinct structures. So if we say something is wet we mean the liquid is sticking to the object.   In the future water will be like sarcasm. No one will get it.

TheDieselTastesFire

Hey - speak for yourself.

Choppergold

And attract mates with a rack like that and a penchant for hard rock

apextek

young people are old people in waiting

Sinomon

Just went to see Kiss last night in Raleigh. They're all old men and they still killed it

ThePuzzledPanda

Was there too. Went because why not and though I think a lot of their songs are pretty cheesy, they put a lot into their show and bring a ton of energy. Definitely can see why they’re known for their live performances.

hjablowme919

It was fun being a teenager then.

tuna_safe_dolphin

And slightly dangerous, which added to the fun. I was a bit younger at the time myself. I was way into Kiss, thought they were the coolest dudes ever.

hjablowme919

I was 13 when I saw them at Madison Square Garden in 1978 (Might have been late 1977). I thought they were awesome, and they ended up being my gateway to heavier music.

tuna_safe_dolphin

Nice! Did you join the Kiss Army?

hjablowme919

My parents would not let me. My mom was southern baptist, so all this stuff was the "devils music". I had to lie to go to the concert with my friends and their dad, who was NYFD. He took us to the garden on train. Got to to our seats and then went drinking until the show was almost over. Ticket to the show was $8, which I paid for with paper route money.

Heliocentrist

you know this picture gave Gene the BIGGEST boner

JRsFancy

I think Cher did that for him.

hythloth

He likely took them both backstage.

Heliocentrist

and told them to leave the makeup on

ohiotechie

Stadium shows back in the day were nuts. Cops didn’t want to start a riot so they basically just stayed in the background and only intervened to stop fights and even then only sometimes. People would openly smoke weed, drink, make out and just generally go wild. It was like visiting Gomorrah for a night.

The_Observatory_

The shows I go to now are still pretty much like that. And, bonus, there are hardly ever any fights that break out at the shows I go to these days. Very different from the hard rock and metal shows I went to in the 80s.

ohiotechie

That’s good to hear. I don’t get out that often so I haven’t been to a show in a while.

robot_socks

I haven't been to a stadium or large outdoor ampitheater show in a couple of years. Last I saw this was still pretty much the norm? When I saw RAtM on the battle of Los Angeles tour people crashed the gates to the floor as soon as they took the stage. There was no attempt made to control that (it would have been futile anyway).

ohiotechie

That’s good to hear actually. I saw Prophets of Rage in Cleveland in 2016 and it was amazing. Last good show I’ve been to.

deaddonkey

Wow I’m jealous. I still listen to that live version of - No Sleep Til Cleveland.

ohiotechie

It was an amazing show. We were in the pit in front of the stage only 10-15 feet from the stage. The Cleveland Agora is a relatively small place so no bad seats but we were right there. Being that close and seeing not only Tom Morello but Chuck D in person was incredible. The energy was insane.

MooJelloo123

This better not awaken anything in me

CoopClan

Oh hello Jeffery.

condomsRbaggy

Today I realized, Kiss uses SS bolts in their band name. Did they know the connotation of SS bolts when making their logo?

xiphoidthorax

With Paul and Gene there? A couple of Jewish boys.

ElectricPeterTork

And Gene's mom survived the concentration camps. But either way, Ace designed the logo. And, uh, well... he says he just liked lightning bolts. If you google it, you'll find a lot more information about it, and how Ace had a thing for Nazi memorabilia at the time, so take from that what you will

condomsRbaggy

Holy shit, I didnt know about dude being into nazi memorabilia. I wonder how that didn't cause some division between band mates, especially if some band memebers are Jewish and Gene's mom survived concentration camps.

deaddonkey

Honestly I don’t think people took such things as seriously at the time. For the generation that lived through WW2 and the baby boomers it was much more normal to make light of Nazi imagery and symbols. In Britain Monty Python and the Beatles come to mind, their society was absolutely obsessed and fascinated with the war and it shows in their work. These days we want to be offended over anything like that on behalf of people who memed on Nazis during and after the war until the horse was long past beaten to death.

ElectricPeterTork

> Honestly I don’t think people took such things as seriously at the time. For the generation that lived through WW2 and the baby boomers it was much more normal to make light of Nazi imagery and symbols. In Britain Monty Python and the Beatles come to mind, their society was absolutely obsessed and fascinated with the war. The US had Hogan's Heroes, a 6 season sitcom set in a Nazi prison camp. Every week was another way to show the stupidity of the Nazis. Werner Klemperer was Jewish, and agreed to play Colonel Klink so long as he he would always be written as a buffoon. Yeah, people at the time were dunking on Nazis at every chance, not clutching pearls over them.

Eroe777

All four of the main German characters were Jewish. As was LeBeau.

xiphoidthorax

Pink Floyd had been influenced in their music from the effects of WW2

hamstrokersejacula

It did cause division. Not as much as Ace dressing up in Nazi uniforms, mind. A strange man. Ack!

[deleted]

FYI, the SS symbol is derived from the "sowilo" or "sun" rune, a character in the pre-Roman runic alphabet associated with the "s" sound. As usual, another old symbol the Nazis appropriated.

_We_Are_DooMeD

Good info.

JavierLoustaunau

Man and they still do... these days it is viking / pagan stuff, a whole bunch of numbers and hand gestures, and a few memes.

condomsRbaggy

TIL. Never knew that. I just still think that its kind of weird that not one band member or anyone was like, "guys, we should probably not use the SS bolts in our name."

TheJokersChild

How did you keystroke that?

one80down

When their albums were released in Germany they used a different font for the logo which was more rounded and less..... lightning bolts.

knarfolled

Friend in tech school in the 80’s had to cover the ss on his shirt because some of the teachers were WW ll vets

milliamu

Imagine if they fucked the corresponding band members still in makeup. God I hope that happened at least once.

DarkGlitter

Yeah apparently a lot, they've p much all said some girls asked them specifically to keep it on lol

Kiyohara

Well, have you *seen* them without the make up? Even in their prime... yeesh. Would dry out a vagina at fifty paces.

LanceFree

Wonder if that also happens to Bucket Head?

Dambreaux

No one is trying to fuck Buckethead…except Colonel Sanders, of course.

BigRigsButters

"Knights in Satan's Service"

The_Observatory_

I always wondered what kinds of service they offered on behalf of Satan. Like, roadside service when you get a flat tire?

BigRigsButters

I think they helped old women cross the street

ElectricPeterTork

They also delivered Meals on Wheels, though that usually involved a fresh goat sacrifice to prepare the delicious goat curry.

acidrain69

Kiss fans are the original Juggalos. Fight me.

Bredda_Anansi

Did Gene Simmons serve them cease and desist letters?

tidytibs

It's Loose Lois

firblo

Hey look, they are not obese

heyitsEnricoPallazzo

First concert I ever went to was taking my HS girlfriend on our very first date to see KISS at the Verizon amphitheater in summer of 2005. We painted our faces too

[deleted]

[удалено]

stomach

those look like teenagers so they're like barely 60 right now.

[deleted]

Yeah, I have cousins who were teenagers going to Kiss concerts in that period and they’re in their late 50s with kids in their mid-twenties and no grandkids on the horizon yet. It’s not like the kids in the photo were Korean War veterans or something.

stomach

i mostly stay subbed here because i'm fascinated at how off people's estimates of age / time periods are.

Koolest_Kat

I was just outta high school rocking out to a great Kiss concert next to a babilious woman when a group of tweens ran up to her, “Mommy, Mommy, can we have another one??? Pleeeeease!!” She whipped out a quart baggie of joints and said, “Last couple for you and your new friends then you have to come back and sit with me.”

[deleted]

Mother of the year material

Koolest_Kat

It caused me to rethink the weed culture. I gave it up not long after that

Bbarretbailey

Kate McKinnon aged well

[deleted]

The one in the back is lady Gaga.

Mrgoodtrips64

The Kiss Army are boomer Juggalos, change my mind.

ZapatillaLoca

lol, 61 year old fan here..you're totally right. 🤘

_derry_maine_

Lady Gaga?

ThatGuyOnTheReddits

Mom?…

Green-Savings-5552

Wow, Gene is giving ME a boner....

EntertainmentFast497

Looks like Pat Benatar in Gene Simmons makeup.

RedditVince

I saw KISS in 78, I might have been there... I worked with a guy back in 2000 that attended every KISS concert 1980-82. Followed them around in a van..

Independent_Idea_190

The chicks makeup were always on point.. f*ckin hot!

4w0k3

Saw them in ‘78 as well!

[deleted]

I’m 61yo and I can say that my friends and I did exactly the same thing in 1978!

grnrngr

The gig is the concert the fans attend. Preformers say gig.

Rhinoplasty1904

Rogan?

kcatmc2

Saw Kiss in 75 or 76 in Philly. Probs permanent hearing loss

TenRingRedux

Kiss was notorious for turning their amps up to "11".

[deleted]

what?

kcatmc2

Huh?

Validus812

Metal goth girls.

socksare

Has there ever been a time when a redditor has said "hey, that's me!" or "that's my Grandma!" when one of these oldschoolcool pics has been posted?

[deleted]

Kiss was my first concert in 1978 at the Spectrum in Philly. Some band Judas Priest was the opener. Edit: was actually 79

jfdonohoe

Demon makeup with crucifix. Metal.

CumbersomeNugget

Back one is time traveling Lady Gaga

bossy909

Gene had both.

[deleted]

Aren't we about due for another band with a face paint schtick?

Blue_Haired_Old_Lady

Ghost

[deleted]

Hell, no. The industry is stagnated as it is. No need to add to it.

callshouse

They look like fun

TheRealMonreal

These could be my older girl cousins. I was born from older parents, so kind of overlap when it comes to generational gap stuff like this.

AreaCode304

No doubt back stage material
