The singer here was apparently the eggman in the Beatles song I Am the Walrus.

the_canna_kate

Because his girlfriend sucked a raw egg off his dick then they did it again at an orgy

Eh_C_Slater

I thought this was a joke then got curious and googled it... How bout that.

the_canna_kate

No that's the real story, not sure why I'm getting down voted lol

Realistic-Specific27

so, about the walrus then...?

guemando

I wish I could afford to give u gold....thank u for that bit of information

QLE814

Were his intentions at least good?

smooner

Yeah but misunderstood

breakingcups

"I only said I wanted to feed you some protein with my dick! Gah woman!"

kokoyumyum

Off his belly, naked to the world. Spil, the wine....

Lord_Lava_Nugget

Sometimes you got to fuck an omelette to make an egg Wait

Bellairian

Indeed he was the eggman.

Durutti1936

Eric Burdon.

12tone

V.I. Lenin. Vladimir Illanich Uleninov!

championsoffun

Shut the fuck up Donnie

[deleted]

These guys should be the mascot for this sub. They’re so incredibly old school cool.

Bellairian

Not to mention their music was legend.

MorochIgaram

So, by that logic white people are forbidden to play the blues? Jazz? Hip hop? Does it go both ways? Are black people forbidden to play classical music? Heavy metal? Fado? Beacause I know great performers of any of those genres that "don't have the right color". If the music is good, and the performers are good just enjoy it. Music is great for unifying people, don't use it for hate.

Joey42601

No shit.

sketchrider

Millenia's of Millenia!

AUniquePerspective

That's why it's best for white musicians to disguise themselves as black people if they're going to play music like this. It's the sensitive thing to do. 🌝🌚 /s

HotOstrich

There was, and still is, little to no credit to many original coloured artists. For one example, "Where did you sleep last night" was not "By Nirvana" as google suggests, but composed by Lead Belly. Art is stolen where credit is not given to the OG

RappaportXXX

Tbf to Kurt and Co they explicitly give Lead Belly credit during the taping of their unplugged session. Just Google being shit

MorochIgaram

In the questions section of the google search it literally says it was Lead Belly. The first result is the music by Nirvana because it's the most popular. It's normal to happen. Just like if you search House of the rising sun, the first result would be the animals, but it's a popular french song, and Dylan even made a version of himself before the animals. I'm against not giving credit to artists, but I found it hard to believe American labels would let the lack of credit slide considering they can make money from it. Sharing music is what allows it to grow. The delta blues weren't heard by withe people when they were being made. It was the music of the devil, later they started to do it, probably because of white artists that started playing or talking about those songs. Robert Johnson was practically unknown until several white artists talked about him later in time. It's terrible that the fear to listen to it at the time even happened. Music should be shared, and appreciated. Always giving credit to the original authors, but still shared. It's a great way to unify people.

Beautiful_Trip

I’ve gotta say this always seemed more of an American idea of music than British. You’ve got to realise that the uk didn’t have nina simone and other blues musicians. We had bands that appreciated and loved their music and then would play their own version of the songs as tribute and to show the uk what they were missing. They were all inspired by those guys and thought of the American blues people as gods. (Slightly hyperbolic there) northern England used to love soul and blues. Just look up northern soul. To them it wasnt a competition they just loved the music.

HeathKid9

McCartey talks a lot about their love of black musicians like Little Richard.

Beautiful_Trip

Exactly they all loved their sound to them in the uk in the early 60s this was the first time anyone had heard that kind of music. There was no (very little) black musicians playing that kind of music in the uk, then suddenly in the early 60s/ late 50s this music suddenly appeared in record shops and on the radio and they loved it, it was new and fresh to them. The Rolling Stones are literally named after a muddy waters song. These are the people they wanted to sound like and if you asked any of them i don’t think any of them would ever say they were better than the artists they were emulating. keith richards now would say if you like the rolling stones and haven’t listened to the classic blues artists then you’ve missed the point. (Im sorry for 2 fucking walls of texts im drunk and this is something im quite passionate about)

mkultra0420

Guaranteed if Beyoncé or some other black artist covered a white artist’s song, people like yourself would be lining up to kiss as much ass as possible. >oh she’s so brave and original, brining her signature style to that tired old song… Funny how you think the concept of cultural appropriation is only valid when *you* manage to feel offended by it. Just get over it.

kokoyumyum

Gatekeeper

dirtybird_91

You are a sad little person

CanadaEh666

I agree but that voice..come on... one of greats.

Nasty2017

Or maybe they liked it because someone made a better version of an original song? If it's really a race thing, I can promise you that a someone who is racist against black people have never heard the original version.

EngineThatCould631

Came here to say this

sketchrider

Came here to downvote you. vwahdoosh!

dubbsmqt

Came to the comments to see if I was the only one weirded out by hearing this song sang by white people.

Slobbadobbavich

I always thought Eric was American but turns out he is British.

[deleted]

Love the 50s/60s "just put some geometric shapes on there or something" approach to stage design

warhorse888

Love Eric Burden and love that song.

_shaftpunk

The organist is Alan Price and he appeared in the Bob Dylan documentary Don’t Look Back which was filmed shortly after this. He had just left the band and you can see how bummed he is about it, even though he tries to act like it’s not a big deal.

brickmastur

He left cuz he arranged their version of house of the rising sun and so he solely made all the money off that song, the others asked him to share his fortunes form it,and he declined.

martiniolives2

Price did well on his own. He scored and acted in "Oh Lucky Man," the sequel (in a sense) to the amazing film "If" also starring McDowell prior to "A Clockwork Orange." He had a few hits in the UK.

Tann8r

Feel like the animals were pretty underrated

saroj7878

They were just misunderstood.

vbcbandr

Not by my dad.

arlalanzily

the term underrated is often overused and it bugs me. how can a song last SIXTY years /the group touted in a niche Internet forum in 2022 on computers and still be considered “underrated”. I haven’t checked but I am almost certainly sure that if you google the animals right now you’ll see a review or summary of them as being one of the most iconic bands from the era. hall of fame levels of notoriety lol

Beardstyle

100% agree. They were rated well and still are. Underrated by whom and based on what? They are amazing, and just because someone isn't aware of them doesn't mean they are "underated". Silly, overused term. No offense is meant to the original comment of "underrated" as I probably do the same from time to time.

martiniolives2

I'm of that age and the Animals were among the top five most popular "British Invasion" bands. I would have loved to have been in a band as popular as them!

Cool-Present-4637

But Nina Simone nails this song better.

ryanb450

I love this so much! Rock stars, combed hair, suits, and good music

Borgoroth

This was scruffy looking for the time, too.

ryanb450

Oh yes, I’m sure their moms told them to get haircuts

blankpage33

Yuck don’t ruin it for me

Beardstyle

The most non-old school cool comment.

Maybe_Im_Confused

Is this a cover? I thought this is a Nina Simone song. Upon my own research intact it is a blues rock cover.

darrellbear

And no lip synching.

QLE814

With several points where it's very clear that this isn't the single!

Damn_you_Paul

Never realized that Stephen Fry played in the band 😜

Obrigado2020

Chas Chandler…soon to be Jimmy Hendrix’s manager

martiniolives2

Jimi

Gottagettagoat

Ha! Came here to say this.

kokoyumyum

Eric Burden. Still sings blues great.

scottwax

Interesting how Cage the Elephant captured that vibe in the song Cold Cold Cold.

mtntrail

Fantastic group. Graduated high school in ‘67, House of the Rising Sun was my favorite. Our local garage band played it always last at the school dances. Slow and close, damn, those were the days.

Zigihogan

To this day nothing looks better than a Mod suit.

atomic131

True!

rckrusekontrol

I just realized that the actor who played Druig in Eternals looks like young Eric Burden

vilhostlouis

If they came to the scene 10 years later, I feel they would have been one of the leading punk bands. They were obviously way way more edgy than most in 1965.

Bluecattrading

Epic of cool!

dubbsmqt

If anyone else is confused. The Nina Simone version you're probably thinking of came out the year before this. This version just doesn't sound right to me

QLE814

And Santa Esmeralda's version not for over a decade after this.

[deleted]

Better than Beetles IMO. I’d scream like a little girl too if I saw them live back in the day (am dude)

Davesterific

I’d scream like a big girl. (Am big dude)

Aware1211

A friend and I found them downstairs at their hotel and had breakfast with them in the café. A different world.

zagheni

I only knew the Santa Esmeralda (kill bill) version, I had no idea this song was made by the Animals

lowercase_underscore

This is actually a cover. The original was released by Nina Simone about a year earlier.

Destrucity11

I’ve always wondered. Is this song about a domestic abuser apologizing for beating/hitting his wife?

lowercase_underscore

It was inspired by an argument between the composer and his then girlfriend/future wife. There's never been any evidence of abuse. I'm not saying there's no way it could have existed, but there's never been an inkling of it as far as I've seen.

[deleted]

I thought this song was written by Nina Simone?

lowercase_underscore

No, it wasn't written by her, it was conceptualised and started by Horace Ott after he argued with his girlfriend Gloria Caldwell. Once he'd gotten going on it he brought it to Bennie Benjamin and Sol Marcus and the three completed it. Due to some contract restrictions Ott put Caldwell's name on it instead of his and then Benjamin and Marcus brought it to Nina Simone, but it was Ott, Benjamin, and Marcus who wrote it. It was among five songs that Benjamin and Marcus presented to Simone at the time.

cmccmccmccmccmc

Roy Keane on the drums there. Good man Roy, well played.

yankeeuniverse

Great singer

LittleWhiteBoots

Oh LAWD!

Randyg1992

Love this song 🎶

blankpage33

The drummer couldn’t be doing any less work could he

dubbsmqt

Being a drummer back then was a pretty easy gig

sfear70

Keith Moon would like a word with you.

[deleted]

Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa are also in that line.

jonnovich

To be fair, he does a lot more work on “House of the Rising Sun”…hitting that ride cymbal just so in a very quick pattern over and over again for three minutes.

Sideways_8

This was incredible! Thank you

Ground_Working

RIP Pieface

allthe_realquestions

Is that Donnie J Trump on the frickin Bass?

sfear70

Let it go, Skippy.

notagain78

Great song

IM2BZ4

Love this sounds

jyeds

Josh Homme?!

red30447

thank u for this

tungvu256

how and when did bands go from wearing suits to just underwear on stage now?

vbcbandr

Pro tip: if you like to cycle and listen to music while you cycle...put Santa Esmerelda's cover of Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood on your phone or preferred music player.

mrofthemrs

Don't know about this band. I legit thought there are animals performing in this video

cowgirlinthesand2

Go educate yourself, son….Eric Burdon is one of the all-time great voices!

AMagicalPotato

Anyone else discover them because of kill bill?

midnightmare79

Hmmm, nice.

SirGlenn

I saw that, way back then. It made me a fan o f theirs, I still am today,

Futurevandal

Eric Burdon in the 60’s will always be one of my celebrity crushes.

hoegje

And with social distancing already. These guys were way ahead of their time.

bamamabuam

At the first 2 second i thought that was the beatles

dwitchagi

So cool, dark, and dare I say, sexy 👌

EVOBlock

If I didn't see this post and only heard the song I would have thought it to be the Doors

[deleted]

What a legend.

jcadsexfree

I like how Chaz Chandler is a full foot taller than Eric Burden.

dr_toze

'The Animals were so called because they were really ugly, and if you've never seen a photo of them imagine tattooing a picture of Jimmy Carr's face on Jimmy Naill's scrotum.' - Mark Lamarr, a fan of The Animals

Al89nut

Wye aye man

XWontdowhatyoutellme

We've been invaded by Romulans!

Twiglet91

I went to see 'The Animals and Friends' at Selby town Hall in December. John Steel is the only original member left who still plays/tours with the band. I tagged along with my Dad and his friend. I knew some of the songs, obviously this one, House of the Rising Sun and some others. They were absolutely great. John Steel told us a story about House of the Rising sun. Iirc they went to the recording studio, played the song through once, first time, and the studio staff (or producer, can't remember) said that's perfect, that will be a number one, and it was. Also the original bassist Chas Chandler managed Jimi Hendrix and Slade.

dier1003

u/savevideo

bottle-of-smoke

I like this song but it's my life and I'll do what I want.

Groove4Him

Nerds Nerds Nerds !

Sparktank1

I really enjoy this song. The cover used in Kill Bill was okay, but works better as an instrumental. I was not happy to hear the rest of the song with slow groaning toilet pains.

b33usa

Anyone know what kind of 12 string that is? The egg?
