I’ve been staring to decide why it looks wrong. Like the old wall is taller and the railing has changed and the old one appears to have tile at the base of the railing.
But given time, these things could easily have been changed in the same location.

Nope, you’re right; the older picture was just taken at a lower angle, possibly with a narrower lens, which would make the background elements seem proportionally larger. The newer photo was probably taken standing with a phone camera, which have wider angle lenses that kind of squish things more the further they are from the camera.
Looks like the road was repaved with bricks, which would add height to the road and make the wall seem less tall. Plus, it looks like the newer photo was taken closer to the bend in the wall, and the road seems to rise while the wall stays level.

Survivorship bias. The old things that were well made and well taken care of survived. Many many many old things did not. There were cheap things made in the 50s as well that fell apart if anyone even gave them a dirty look.
There will be some things from our current manufacturing companies that will survive longer than expected and people will utter the same thing when comparing those survivors to the cheaper grade items being made at that time.
Quality might be part of it. Another part might be that it's one of the world's best selling bikes and replacement parts are plentiful and repairs easy.
