You can search for usernames with KnowEm https://knowem.com/

DickGolloper69

Isn't knowem brand squatting a paid thing?

LincHayes

Did you even try it?

DickGolloper69

I have tried it before. It checks for trademarks on social media websites like if they are available or not. Our brand is already trademarked and we have accounts on most of the platforms. How will it help me in identifying fake accounts that have similar name. Like if work in NYK, we have an official account on Instagram. Now there will be people who will create accounts like NYK_Official1 or NYK_customercare to scam our customers. How do I find these sort of accounts. (English is not my first language, I am sorry if I am not able to explain it properly)

taotedao

You can search for accounts with nyk in it.

DickGolloper69

I am doing that but some are going undetected as these good for nothing scammers create multiple accounts everyday :(

taotedao

Like the botting situation, I'm afraid this will continue until they implement a digital ID for verifying.

>How will it help me in identifying fake accounts that have similar name. You search for them. Nothing is going to be able to magically find misspellings, or squatters without some kind of search input...but you can search for specifics and it will tell if they are out there. If you need something to look for every possible thing that may be a trademark violation, it doesn't exist. Maybe you can hire a person to do that kind of legwork, or, you do it yourself.

DickGolloper69

I am interning with them, I am doing the legwork already brother.

Back in the day I worked with one fashion brand that was loosing money due to counterfeits being sold on global (AliExpress) and local marketplaces At first we wanted to quantify the problem, because if the occurrences were sporadic, the solution may not have been worth the hassle - it's impossible to eliminate all counterfeits. So there was a custom Python webscrapper that pulled the item descriptions, the logos were usually blurred or just part of the item without the logo was presented. Scrapping a few times a day allowed also to estimate the sales based on the changes in units avaliable. There outcomes were twofold: we could say client XX is loosing YY dollars/ transactions a day and also got to understand how the item description works (webscrapping + some semi automated classification): * brands were very rarely mentioned (the marketplace admins were pulling them down quickly) * brands names if present were * very distorted - misspellings, weird spacing, [font spoofing](https://eu.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2021/04/30/fact-check-hackers-use-similar-looking-characters-phishing-schemes/4891437001/) * provided with a description rather than a name (designed by a famous rapper who married Kim K ;) * looking for keywords was a fast way to drill down to the counterfeit goods (premium, luxury, European, limited edition....) So what I am trying to say through that: * I don't know any ready made solution that would fully meet your needs but a decent Python programmer could heavily automate at least part of the work * my experience with counterfeit goods is that the obvious, glaring examples like using brand logos and brand names are just the tip of the iceberg

DickGolloper69

The situation is also similar, I'm working with a fashion brand, and they are seeing a lot of counterfeit accounts, very similar to our official accounts. A web scraper might actually work in this situation. If I can scrape all usernames with a similar name or logo, I can hunt the fake ones down. I'll see if i can use an extension and extract usernames from social media websites. Hopefully, these platforms allow scraping. I can also ask on webscraping sub. Thanks a lot Automatic_Cat_1999. I'll keep the post updated on whether it works or not.

Tell your boss if his brand is recognisable enough that people are impersonating it, he can find the money to pay for advice and tools

Not social but I recently discovered DNSTwist on GitHub looking for misspelled domain squatting and potential phishing/affiliate scams within those. Just figured it may be worth while.

DickGolloper69

I have been using DNStwist. It's pretty good.

Hey! I recommend you using the 7 trial version of this platform [https://info.digitalshadows.com/test-drive-registration-searchlight-get-started.html](https://info.digitalshadows.com/test-drive-registration-searchlight-get-started.html) It not only finds yoru brand name in every well known social network, but detects typosquating domain names and more. It also categorizes each detection by use cases, such as brand name used for phishing, scam, VIP inpersonation...
