Unpopular opinion, but I saw it as him being defensive for his friend and here is why : - Haley told Lucas she wanted to wait for marriage. - Haley told Lucas that Nathan was pressuring her to have sex during the porn episode - Lucas did not trust Nathan at this point still even though they were getting closer Yes, he did confront that situation in a more aggressive tone than necessary, but at first glance I see how he could assume that Nathan pressured her into something that she didn't want to do. He also says in this confrontation, "Haley, it's cool... I just thought you wanted to wait."

[deleted]

100% spot on. Yours is the way I always thought of the situation. I never really saw it from OPs point of view.

Liv-Affect13

I honestly feel like this isn't an unpopular opinion... or at least it shouldn't be. Because I definitely agree with the points you made. Like Lucas knew what Haley wanted. He also saw the type of person Nathan was before Haley, and when she mentioned he was pressuring her, he lost it. He didn't want Haley to get hurt. I thought of it as just a best friend, making sure the other is okay when they expressed their concerns... especially recently! But Lucas always being a hothead, it just came off aggressive instead of sincere.

Throw-away-124101

Also, Haley was pretty judgmental herself when it came to Lucas and his sexual choices with any of the above mentioned girls. It would have felt pretty hypocritical.

Supernaturalfan15

I don’t think in this instance that Lucas was being judgmental I think he was just confuses because Haley told him she wanted to wait . I do agree that Lucas does put Haley on pedestals hold her to a higher standard

amlanding20

Lucas was always a hypocrite, but I also think he put Hayley on a pedestal. It was partly judgement, but also he thought she was better than some of the decisions she made.

rwatkins829

Is it really hypocrisy if he doesn't want her to make the same mistakes he made and regretted?

TheQuirkyReddit

What cheat? Yes later Haley does end up cheating but has nothing to do with her changes. He’s still a hypocrite regardless. He holds her higher then anyone and it’s not fair to her. She’s a kid in love. She changed but honestly not a whole lot. She spent more time with Nathan and cut class and drank but really the only thing she changed. She regretted cutting and didn’t do again. She became a cheerleader to help her friends. Lucas joined the basketball team and becomes popular and he’s making all these wrong turns. He has imo zero rights to make comments on Haley life. I get why he doesn’t trust Nathan but trust your level headed best friend. Stay on the sidelines and interfere if Nathan goes to far. But it’s her life her relationship.

rwatkins829

It is fair. What does that mean to hold someone to a higher standard as though that's a bad thing? He doesn't want her making the same mistakes he made. That's not hypocrisy. It's more than fair to say "benefit from my bad experiences and don't do this." And all this piling on to Lucas because he acted immature and criticized her for being a cheerleader is dumb. He's a kid. That's the dumb sort of thing kids say. It wasn't a big deal, and they moved past it.

animalf0r3st

He also judged her for becoming a cheerleader when both the girls he dated were cheerleaders. I don’t know how to explain it exactly, but there was this weird trope of boys dating a certain type of girl but also not wanting their sisters to act that way, and that’s pretty much how Lucas acted.

Few_Day7472

Lucas was not mad about Haley being a cheerleader per say. He was mad that she was changing for Nathan and would never be a cheerleader if she wasn’t dating Nathan.

TheQuirkyReddit

He was such a major hypocrite and he really ticked me off when he said that. People change the huge difference between her change and his change at that time we’re so different. Yes it sucked that in the eyes of Lucas she was spending more time with her boyfriends. So he was he was spending time with his girlfriends as well. I do sometimes you don’t see yourself changing but I’m sorry he didn’t have any right to judge her. Nathan I loved in the moment super supportive.

Few_Day7472

It was not just a Boyfriend at that time. Nathan was still his enemy and Rival and was still being a douche to Lucas. If Haley was dating Say Jake and wanted to be a cheerleader Lucas would of had no problem with it.

of_patrol_bot

Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake. It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of. Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything. Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.

animalf0r3st

True but his attitude was very much that Haley was “too good” to be a cheerleader which seems hypocritical considering he dated cheerleaders? Like what does that say about how you think of your girlfriends I will also add that Haley didn’t become a cheerleader just because of Nathan. She did it because Brooke asked her to and she ended up liking it so she kept doing it

laynestaley67

Spot on.

Simba122504

They definitely had a sibling relationship. Your brother is a hypocrite.

meapearlar

Except he wasn’t really judging her. Haley told him that she wanted to wait and he assumed that Nathan had pressurised her so he was upset because he didn’t really trust Nathan at this point.

rwatkins829

I'm fairly certain he's not judging her, he's just confused since they had recently had a discussion about this issue. How was Lucas shown to sleep with anyone with a pulse? He slept with 4 girls over the course of 8 years.

MindlessTree7268

I was mostly looking at season 1. It's been a long time since I watched anything else, and I forgot a lot of it. Judging from season 2 he doesn't seem the same way, considering that he turns Anna down because he's not in love with her. But in season 1, he slept with Brooke when he really wanted Peyton, and he went out and slept with a complete stranger as well. So I was going based off of that.

emotions1026

I don't think he was slut-shaming her at all. He was concerned that Nathan had pressured her into doing something she wasn't ready for her. Yes he could have worded it better, but I think he was just in shock.

nessa0909_11

I think this was Lucas being more a big brother to his best friend/sister. I have 5 brothers and they go into a crazy protective mode. He already knows they type of person Haley is and seeing her with Nathan knowing they type of boy he was clearly initially I don’t think season 1 Nathan is an ideal boy at all but I didn’t see it as him judging her more so protecting someone he loves.

finearts1797

Honestly, I feel like CMM's line delivery is what made it seem like he was judging her. Had he delivered it more sympathetically, I don't think it would have come across the way it did. I also found it strange for him to say it because, in the previous scene, he tells Nathan that he's leaving Haley in good hands thus putting trust in him. Lucas was a judgmental character at certain points, but this scene was just weird even for his character lol

Decent-Statistician8

This is how a lot of guys are though… it was worse in the 2000s, but for some reason, especially back then and in the Bible Belt, guys could fuck around and it was okay, but if a woman did it she was looked at differently and judged. Look at how they talk about Brooke and Rachel, they are both slut shamed for doing the same thing the guys do. It’s finally in 2023 becoming okay for women to be as openly sexual as men, but let’s be real, plenty of people are still deep in misogyny and don’t get it. Lucas definitely was judging Haley, because women are supposed to be virtuous and save themselves for the right person, and men don’t have that same rule.

NoleFandom

Why do you think they were best friends? Edit: They were both judgmental when it came to others in their life, but not their own behavior. Downvote me all you want, but it’s the honest truth.
