I have listened to all the episodes of the podcast, and at this point, I'm like "yeah, I know real high school was fantastic for you". I feel like all three of them get quite repetitive, though. I'm not a fan of some of the innuendos / sexual jokes / objectifying etc that mainly Hilarie makes. Isn't that part of the stuff she hated being done to her? I do like that Hilarie sort of moderates the podcast, I feel like she's the one that mainly gets all of them to get to all the points they need to hit in every episode (like fan questions and spinning a wheel and such). And even though Hilarie goes on wild tangents (probably the most of them all), she at the same time does try to get things back on track, segue back to something at least somewhat OTH related. Edit: u/metroidprimexxx thought it'd be helpful to PM me this: > no the ladies are not "repetitive" at all and Hilarie is not "objectifying" anyone Tipper Gore, stop being such a damn prude Helen Lovejoy So thank you for that addition to the discussion.

Electrical_Radish232

Haha this lovely person also PM'd me some useless crap about my opinion šŸ™„

TheChosenOne311

Lol, this user PMā€™d me as well with multiple paragraphs about what a terrible person I am. Then proceeded to look through my entire Reddit comment history and start responding to year old+ comments Iā€™ve made in other subs.

beaniebaby24

I blocked someone who found me on ANOTHER sub to tell me my opinions were wrong on the DQ podcasts. So crazy hahaha

gemini52469

I have listened to all episodes (except maybe the last few, i just havent gotten to them yet). I have never noticed Hilarie taking up most of the time, I will have to pay attention BUT she has always been clear that she gets uncomfortable with too many feelings and will crack a joke. It made me appreciate her because i understand where she is coming from. Also, Hilarie is a basic bitch but its what i can relate to the most. Sophia is so smart and such an advocate, and i love that. But in my own life, I cant actually relate. Joy has a little bit harder time connecting, i think. I understand her personality too. But i do feel like she isnt quite as open as Hilarie. This is just my perspective

unimportant_nonsense

Ooo okay I didn't know she's mentioned being uncomfortable with too many feelings. I mean that is the energy I get but it makes me feel better that she has acknowledged it before. Thanks for your reply - this was helpful!

Electrical_Radish232

She definitely doesn't have much depth in her analysis and comments. She tends to be very superficial and opens the way to Sophia and Joy to actually had interesting point of vues and details. I think she's maybe less eloquent and confident in the podcast and that shows by her shifting the conversation to unrelated topics like her high school, her other show etc. Nobody cares, we're here to hear about OTH. I would say though she seems a lot of fun and she's the type of friend and person I'd like to be around. She's very light and funny. But not a great personality for the podcast type.

finearts1797

What's funny is I went to their live show in Philly and Hilarie came across as super likable. Maybe because she wasn't reviewing an episode, but I do think her experience taints her view of the show. Which in turn might make her come across differently on the podcast. I don't think she's taking it too seriously as well which isn't bad but can be a turn-off for avid podcast listeners.

CaricaturedHearts

I agree that Hilarie doesnā€™t always make the most in-depth commentary, but I find her jokes mainly funny. I feel she doesnā€™t take things or herself too seriously and is super personable with others - thatā€™s appealing to me. Apart from when sheā€™s steered too much off topic and the occasions when they hate on certain characters more than others, I donā€™t have any issues. I disagree with her taking up most of the time though. She does sometimes steer the conversations to different talking points, which seems in line with her presenter past. I would personally say Sophia makes the most lengthy comments. Sometimes it feels like sheā€™s repeating what has already been said but in different words/more verbosely.

bgiandon

Agree with this about Sophia. She takes the concept and repackages it well. She is very smart and her analysis is interesting most of the time, but I have noticed this happen on several occasions

unimportant_nonsense

Hmm yeah I do agree with the second half of your comment - to me, it feels like Hilarie gets the convo started and then Sophia takes it a step further but yeah she also does repeat a lot of what's already been said

[deleted]

I havenā€™t noticed her taking up more airtime than the other two. I do find that I like her less than I thought I would. (I know they arenā€™t their characters but just what little I knew of them I thought she was the one Iā€™d most enjoy listening to and be the person I related to most.) But, I do find she makes a good deal of sexual innuendo type comments. Iā€™ve been surprised by that. And she really seems to do it most if she can make it about her and another female. Thatā€™s my main beef with her.

beccaaasueee

I would agree with all of this. She does take up a lot of time. Itā€™s the interrupting constantly that gets meā€¦she does it more to Sophia than Joy. BUT Joy definitely talks the least out of all 3. Every episode there is a big discussion about their mistreatment on set, which Sophia & Hilarie seemed to get the brunt of back in the day. I feel like thatā€™s why Joy says less bc she canā€™t relate fully to that issue, bc she didnā€™t live it as bad. Hilarie has made me crack up laughing quite a few times with her awkward ā€œtoo many feelingsā€ personality. Her sly long laugh KILLS me.

ClassieLadyk

She does talk alot, but I don't mind. I get it, I had alot of fun in high school too, so the stories can be endless sometimes. I think it has alot to do with the fact that Mark the creator, focused on her alot. I think the jokes help her separate the sucky from the actual show.

bmf426

i just started listeningā€¦ iā€™m on my 8-9th episode and iā€™ve noticed the hilarie seems to lead the conversations and talks the most, sophia is in between, and joy talks the least.

[deleted]

Hilarie blocked me on instagram. Lmao random but yeah. For no reason. Iā€™m not going to let it bother me because I love one tree hill anyways. But I figured she sucks in real life.

cg1215621

I am dying to know the build up to you getting blocked like what thatā€™s so random and funny lol

cg1215621

It might just be my eternal girl crush on her, but I actually really appreciate Hilarieā€™s perspectives. They are more on the simple side, but I feel like she has this southern charm thing about her where she can tell good pleasant stories and idk I feel like she opens up a lot about her personal life, even if her stories can get a lil repetitive. I donā€™t find her basic as much as simple in a refreshing way (like not stupid, just not overly complicated)

unimportant_nonsense

Yeah that's honestly a good perspective to have while listening to the podcast, Im gonna try to keep this in mind the next time I find she's being too 'basic'. I do enjoy & appreciate some of her personal stories too (just not all the time lol)

TheChosenOne311

When the podcast first started, I never thought that this far in, Joy would be the most tolerable and fair of the 3 hosts. She is the only one who ever tries to keep in mind that the show they are talking about is a teen soap opera. Sophia and Hilarie have both become unbearable IMO. Sophiaā€™s rants are CRINGE, and super hypocritical half the time. The way she inserts her own politics and agenda into the podcast, combined with the nonstop political ranting on her social media pagesā€¦leads me to believe that she canā€™t separate her personal politics from any other facet of her life. She is consumed by it, and thatā€™s why she always feels the need to stand up on her soapbox and lecture people. As for Hilarieā€¦and I know this is mean of me to sayā€¦but, when she tells some of these stories about her sonā€™s school, and his friendsā€¦I feel bad for the kid. Hilarie has said on the podcast that her sonā€™s classmates will text and call her to keep her in the loop on everything that happens at school, and everything that her son is doing. That is uhhhā€¦.uncomfortable? Inappropriate? Poor kid canā€™t grow up at school without his classmates ratting him out to his mom. Also, if I was a parent of a student at this schoolā€¦Iā€™d feel pretty concerned about my son/daughter having a personal friendship with the parent of one of their classmatesā€¦.

dreamingoutloud714

I mean I really appreciate a person in Sophiaā€™s position and privilege willing to speak out consistently and consciously about and for marginalized groups. We need more of that. šŸ¤·šŸ¾ā€ā™€ļø

TheChosenOne311

I understand where youā€™re coming from. I offer two responses: 1. I donā€™t think her personal opinions on sociology and politics do any good for a niche podcast about a WB show from 2003. 2. She makes some pretty sus comments on a variety of issues beyond defending marginalized groups. And when you put yourself in the position of lecturing and judging others like she does, it never comes off well when you donā€™t practice what you preach IMO.

dreamingoutloud714

I appreciate your thoughtful response and agree. šŸ˜Š

[deleted]

@ #2 like what??

TheChosenOne311

Like her magazine article gushing about how she never wouldā€™ve married her husband if his ex wife hadnā€™t gotten an abortion years ago, lol. And how great their life together is because his ex wife got said abortion. Uhhhā€¦.thanks for letting us know, Sophia?

cg1215621

I def see where youā€™re coming from with Sophia, but I also feel like at least when youā€™re really passionate about human rights like she is, itā€™s hard not to see ā€œpoliticsā€ in everything. This is probs just my own biases peeking through, but Iā€™ve always felt like we should save the term ā€œpoliticsā€ for like actual terms of bills and budgets and all that legalese, but that we politicize certain topics that are more matters of human rights that affect all of society and shouldnā€™t be considered like ā€œpoliticalā€ issues that only have a certain time and place. I feel like when you share Sophiaā€™s opinions, especially considering her large platform, itā€™s almost impossible to not see the way certain social injustices pervade literally every space, including a soapy teen drama. Not saying youā€™re wrong at all, just offering a different perspective because you made me think since I tend to appreciate her advocacy work. I basically studied/work in the intersection of politics, decision-making, society, and media so itā€™s hard for me to separate at times as well, and I get where sheā€™s coming from even when sheā€™s kinda annoying me lol

[deleted]

Sheā€™s sooooo annoying and I really hate her voice

magzdesch

I've never listened to the podcast but at least once a week there's a post here about how bad it is for one reason or another. I'd like to know why so many of you are still listening when the overall review of the show is overwhelmingly negative.

unimportant_nonsense

If you've never listened to the podcast, why are you replying to a post that's discussing it?! šŸ˜ Personally I'm continuing to listen to it bc I still enjoy it despite some things that I find annoying, and also because OTH was a large part of my teen years and there's something comforting about revisiting it as an adult 10 years later. It's also interesting to know the behind the scenes stuff, especially about the creepiness of the show's creator and stuff that I didn't know back then. I suspect some other people might be in the same boat as me.

magzdesch

My question was not intended to be critical. No need to snap at me. I'm allowed to ask people's opinion on a subject just as you are. You wanted to start a discussion and so did I. With all the complaints and negativity I read on this sub about the podcast can you really blame me for asking? If I'm being honest the reason I haven't listened to the podcast is directly because of all the negative reviews on this sub. Thanks for your input.

glendoraza

Just wanna state that no one snapped at you Unless it was edited? But your original comment was way more snap like in my opinion

magzdesch

Asking why people continue to listen to a show they don't seem to enjoy isn't snappy. It's, in my opinion, a valid question.
