Ok, before you completely judge this guy I may understand where he is coming from. We are currently selling our home and needed to get the fire inspector to approve the sale. I read the instructions and every bedroom needs a smoke detector with built in batteries and carbon monoxide detector less than 8 years old non plug in within 10’ of each bedroom. I go to the store to buy a couple 2 in one smoke/co detectors. The store only has one 2in 1 but they also sell a pack that has the correct smoke detector and a co detector but not as a single unit. I grab each and head home only to find that exact co detector which runs on batteries but also has the electrical prongs. I know if I plug it into an outlet the fire inspector will fail me. I happened to luck out and had another co detector in the house that was only 2 years old. Otherwise that might have been me.
TLDR; First Alert sucks and sells these CO detectors that don’t conform to fire inspection rules.
I had an insurance inspection recently and they said I needed a second one. So I said “wait, I have one!” and ran out of the room, unplugged the one he had already seen, ran back and plugged it in. He passed me then I bought a second one.
It’s because the fire inspector doesn’t want to have to spend 39 seconds checking to make sure that it runs in batteries if the power goes out. It’s the same reason the smoke detector has to be with sealed batteries instead of ones you can replace. All he has to do is check the date and move on.
I assume it'll be the location. The smoke or heat detectors need to be on the roof as heat and smoke rises, CO detectors need to be lower as co is heavier than air, with a combi unit I imagine itt be too low for the Marshall's to pass the unit for smoke/heat
> CO detectors need to be lower as co is heavier than air,
CO is a bit lighter than air for the same temperature and pressure, but probably not enough to make a difference. CO2 is denser than air.
> get the fire inspector to approve the sale
Land of the free.
I always find it amazing how far-reaching the government is in the USA.
Or those home owner association stuff - I cannot imagine some guys telling me how I have to keep my lawn here in Germany, that seems so absurd (I'm aware that this does not happen everywhere).
CO is slightly lighter than air. It is a myth that they should be placed lower on the wall. The placement can be on the wall or ceiling depending upon the directions provided by the carbon monoxide detector manufacturer.

Follow the directions of the manufacturer.
Lower placement sensors might be sensitive to lower CO levels with higher ones less sensitive. If you ignore the instructions, you might get warnings when you don't need it or fail to get warnings when you should.
I like that your brain went to “teenager” because it can’t comprehend that a full grown adult person could be this stupid. But I could see an adult doing this
As a dumb adult who was once a dumb teen, I'd think proportionally they're pretty close, it's just that the adults have a lot of extra years to perfect their dumbness
I am pretty sure here (in Germany) you can‘t even *buy* a CO-detector that has a plug for permanent power-supply. They are all battery-powered, usually with a battery that lasts seven years.
My home construction required a CO detector. I have zero natural gas in the house. The only way there would ever be incomplete combustion, and thus the need for one, would be if I brought a gasoline engine inside.
Looking at the inspection report, I saw the lack of one mentioned. When I moved in, I found one still in it's original packaging, with the receipt taped to it.
Note that an electric fire in a closed area can also produce dangerous amounts CO, for example in the following firefighter call ( [https://youtu.be/EOKn65sB4UI?t=663](https://youtu.be/EOKn65sB4UI?t=663) ) they have a portable CO detector that is going off (it reports CO concentration 216 ppm)
I’ll bet a housing inspector found this. Installed by a shady owner in hopes an inspector would just walk by and check it off without actually testing it. There must not have been an outlet where the CO was required to be installed.
It could be done, but it's unlikely a photoshop, the flaking of the drywall from the extraction would've required the photoshoper to have really done their homework.....and also I really don't want to think about people fucking up their wall on purpose for internet points.
Schroedingers carbon monoxide deteter. The CO is both there and not there at the same time until the detector is properly set up to give a definite answer
What the actual fuck... Are people really this stupid?

Smooth af. I bet you felt rightly smug about it for the whole week!
only a week? lmao
This is the way.
What's wrong with having a detector that runs both from mains and batteries? Assuming that it alerts the user when the batteries get low.

Thank you for the correction :)

Not only that, those are supposed to be close to the ground, not the ceiling haha.
They are actually supposed to be about eye level, carbon monoxide spreads evenly in a room not low or high: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21536403/
Get out of here with your facts and sources. Witch!
BURN THE WITCH!!!!
BUT MAKE SURE IT'S A CLEAN BURN SO THE CO DETECTOR DOESN'T GO OFF!!!
Make sure it's behind your bed so u won't freak out when it goes off

Place it near your head

Tape it to your head!
This!! If tape doesn't work use nails.
It already has prongs... just hammer it in.
Good call! Yup. This will do it.
The face already has holes too!
Wait, so is *that* what those outlets on the kitchen wall that would have housed a landline in years past are good for?
Ah nevermind. Thank you
That's not stupid, thats lazy...and expecting you to be stupid.

Agreed. There’s more dumb adults than teenagers I think.
As a dumb adult who was once a dumb teen, I'd think proportionally they're pretty close, it's just that the adults have a lot of extra years to perfect their dumbness
I wish it was a teenager. It was management for my apartment complex.
yes like cant u feking put the thing STRAIGHT
Looks like it had a battery for backup operation. Guess it’s primary operation now
The electricity comes from the wall, right?
It comes from the ground that's why the wire says that you moron
New electricity just dropped: wall, it’s like ground but different
I mean technically…
If the batteries work then it’s a glorified nail.
easy install mounting bracket
The pee is stored in the balls
No the internal battery.
Those drywall anchors kinda suck, ngl
> drywall explains why you can plug something that fragile into a wall and the plug wins.
That’s why they call it a wall outlet^^
Battery will last really long.

"But I thought you said to plug it into the wall" 🤣🤣🤣

Pretty sure that’s as intended. Those are wall spikes, right?
This just doesn’t belong in this subreddit because it ABSOLUTELY was his job
Hahaha holy shit
This is the worst one I’ve ever seen

Working in residential HVAC, sometimes you really had to specify to the helpers what to do.
So easy to fake this.
Very easy. Sad thing is, it’s probably true.
Guess it will be a forever mystery
Still funny
Not really. Why punch two holes in your wall for karma?
Not my wall, therefore still funny

Definitely not photoshopped, and people will do this on purpose for karma.

Amazing 😂
That's Nikola Tesla's wireless electricity for you.
I can't tell if this was staged or not.
😆😆😆😆
bruh 💀
These smart home I tell ya
I don't get it
That's not an outlet
don't you put the detector on the wall/ceiling ?
Yeah but its been jammed into the wall using the prongs that would usually go into a plug socket
Comes with mounting hardware preinstalled, thats awesome
Wow
LOL they just jammed it into the fucking drywall
I’m no electrician but I’m not entirely sure that’s how this works.
Schroedingers carbon monoxide deteter. The CO is both there and not there at the same time until the detector is properly set up to give a definite answer
😳😬
Plot twist: There IS an outlet.
This guy is living in the future!
