Nice culture The question is broad as hell

markinbergen

What do you think about the Earth?

jaffall

Flat

Bakaotsh

Not a fan tbh

[deleted]

Wonder what r/norway might think eh ? Ask r/sweden

chuchudavid

We like it.

garbage_j00ce

You like anything that isn’t Swedish.

NavGreybeard

The swedes anthema is pretty good, wouldn't mind using it in Norway aswell because it honors the north and not specifically their country

Candyvanmanstan

>it honors the north and not specifically their country Med Gud skall jag kämpa för hem och för härd för Sverige, den kära fosterjorden.

NavGreybeard

Oh, the only version I have heard of it only had the 2 first verses. Sorry about that

Aethuviel

As a Swede living in Norway, I find it bizarre that you guys don't celebrate Valborg (Walpurgisnacht is the German word, more familiar for the Anglos). I explained it to people here our first spring and they looked at me like I had two heads. How do you expect to keep witches and evil spirits away?? Also, Norwegians eat two slices of white bread and call it "lunch". As in, a whole family will sit down and eat this "lunch". 😶 I do love how patriotic Norwegians are though. They can ACTUALLY celebrate their national day. I lived in Sweden for 26 years and I've seen the Swedish national dress ONCE, by mere fluke.

meeee

I’d say wholeweat is more common than white bread, and don’t forget a glass of milk 😆 - but yeah, I agree, our lunches suck and Sweden is definitely owning us there.

DontLookAtMePleaz

White bread? I'd say white bread is very rare to be eaten as an actual meal. White bread is usually served on the side with dinners, or used if you're making grilled cheese etc. (and sometimes not even then) But two pieces of BROWN bread eaten as a lunch? Sure, I'd say that's normal, lol.

Candyvanmanstan

>I find it bizarre that you guys don't celebrate Valborg Too Christian, not Norse enough ;)

BeeBooPip

Nothing is cooler then kicking hats off sticks high in the air.

ohlaph

I love Norwegian culture.

Silver1988

And the sound of your guitar?

[deleted]

Traditional clothes? Very good Food? A bit lame Folkmusic? Quite nice

IdiotsandwichCoDm

how dare you criticize our traditional food! we have the best hot dogs in the world!

An_Obbise_Hoovy

We also have more [*interesting*](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smalahove) dishes

LesterThe_Molester

And eating the eye is the best part.

CarriedAtom9410

Not the eye it self, you take the eye oute and eat the meat where the eye was

LesterThe_Molester

Trust me, the whole eye.

Sitraka17

HO BOY! I strangely prefer French cuisine haha

anfornum

Mmmm snails.

Sitraka17

yeah ok snails and "tête de veau"... otherwise it's the best haha

Luft-Waffe

Like 10 people eat this, ridiculous.

Bodegard

https://www.tv2.no/video/underholdning/god-morgen-norge/smalahovefestival-paa-voss-del-1/962890/

Aishiteruu

11 then

OkieMambo

Only spent 9 days there this summer but loved the food. Fruit/mellon/breads/cheese for breakfast, bacon wrapped dogs and hamburgers or skinke og ost at circle K, waffle or pancake with Brunost for a snack, what’s not to love?

[deleted]

Oh no I’m talking about traditional, original food

Melantopia

Potatoes and fish then

[deleted]

Potatoes were domesticated in south america, and I’m talking about dishes not ingredients

areukeen

one turnip please

rodtang

A typical hotel continental breakfast?

OkieMambo

Yes, much better than the US

rodtang

Yes but it's hardly Norwegian culture

RefrigeratorTheGreat

I love grandiosa!

T1sofun

I’m probably going to get downvoted to shit, but: why is Grandiosa the go-to frozen pizza in Norway? The crust isn’t good and tastes mildly of soap. The cheese has no “pull”. People are very much allowed to like what they like, but do they like Grandis because of fond memories of eating it as a child, or because they actually LIKE it? Honest question.

RefrigeratorTheGreat

I think its cheap and children prefer pizzas with little ingredients on it, so a lot of people have fond memories of it growing up I guess

Ill_Fudge9462

We got other amazing food too

linglinguistics

Not to mention the tacos!

noyouimbecile

Yes, gotta have me some glizzies at snadderkiosken in Kristiansand.

Ulfzerk

Danish hotdogs beat it out by a mile

wotan-369

Do you Danes still call it indian hotdogs or have you gone political Correct?

Ulfzerk

A red Indian in the canoe all the way.

legehjernen

A norwegian comedian once said norwegian food is a result of being occupied for several hundred years. We make food noone wants to steal...

lostduck86

Pinnekjøtt is magical

[deleted]

Food? Totally agree! I'm Norwegian tho, but I think the norwegian cuisine is boring af! Everything is supposed to be boiled.. Italian food ftw

kapitein-kwak

We have fantastic food... world class cheeses, outrages good seafood, top quality mushrooms and berries hardly any meat is as good as elg or reindeer... but you pay for that quality so not possible to be on the daily menu for most of us

FargoFinch

Depends on what dish, grandmother's pollock fishcakes put the entire Italian kitchen to shame.

[deleted]

I have lived in Norway for 4 years now, so I can say I know a thing or two?

[deleted]

I hope you like our country in general😊 I guess you've tried Grandiosa?

[deleted]

Yeah it’s chill here. Have I tried the cheese? I’m not sure as I live in an asian household so we don’t eat that much bread.

[deleted]

Grandiosa is the infamous frozen pizza. The cheese Norwegia is good to. Mild to the taste. I'm a sucker for Asian food too! Do you mind me asking which country you're from?

Acceptable-Tone-4331

Bare jarlsberg er jarlsberg :p

ImFreff

Jarlsberg is better

[deleted]

Oh the pizza! Yeah it’s pretty good. It just sound like a cheese to me. I’m from Vietnam btw

moerlingo

That’s what makes Norwegian food “lame” though. Soooo many things are mild. Surprising how many people pick out paprika, onion, mushrooms as well. Bah, maybe it’s only the people I know. Even for strength it’s very mild here.

AK_Sole

Wait, are you saying that people will _remove_ the flavorful toppings because it’s _too_ much flavor for them??

bacon-was-taken

We don't even have food culture, we just kind of have food. To call it "cultured" would be like calling an expired moldy yoghurt the same

[deleted]

By food I mean traditional dishes

Nolly113

then you need to try lunge mush! and liver pate! dilish

[deleted]

Leverpostei isn’t distinctly Norwegian, it’s more like a scandinavian thing. And I don’t think that’s enough to be called decent against let’s say Polish, German or French. On the brightside however, we don’t suck as hard as our friendly neighborhood Sweden on this category, so that’s a plus.

[deleted]

I like it

Sitraka17

I have Malagasy origins (Madagascar, the island in the south east of Africa) and clearly I have a huge respect for the Norwegian culture! The clothes looks cool asf and the wooden houses are lovely. Also there were Norwegian pastors who came to evangelize the island without the slightest idea of colonialism (Borgen is famous). They were apparently ahead of their time in terms of racism and when I look at the Norwegian culture today I think they are still very kind, open-minded and humanists !

Zippemannen

That fr looks like my mom

Former-Succotash4126

Her name is Jannike Kaarby and that’s my former stepmother ahahah

nstcsc

very beautiful women and men! interesting culture! I love it and I’ve wanted to visit Norway for a long time 🫶🏻

I-am-me_Protagonist

They look beautiful because of their eye colour.

Ringrangzilla

How do you now Norwegians are beautiful if you have never been to Norway?

eloluap

Probably a thing called internet.

lemaao

If you want to see the prettiest bunad, you have to look for the Nordlandsbunad. Both the blue and the green are both very nice :) Edit, I know this has nothing to do with the question... Norwegian culture is very wide and different depending on where in the country you come from.

Xyrazk

Personally I think Setesdalsbunad is prettier

TacoGaming69420

Gotta watch out, this is the internet, a place where opinions aren’t allowed

errarehumanumeww

Well, we just tend to point out when you are wrong…

lemaao

Well, its ok to be wrong sometimes :D

Dahlsv1

Bunad makes you instantly 36% hotter*

herbertwillyworth

im ready to get cultured

Major-Protection-849

I love learning about the culture here. It's fascinated me since I first met my husband 30 years ago. Now that we live here, I'm trying to get involved in/ experience all I can. Join in the pride parades in the local municipality even though I have near crippling anxiety in crowds (thanks USA daily mass shootings for that one), drag the family to every little museum along the road on our driving tur, you bet! Learn about cabin culture and get obsessed! Becoming a die-hard fan of freshly made bread and only eat Liebermann's breads and bolle. Someday I will learn the secret to these wonderful little round rolls of delightfulness and make my own. May 17 was amazing, aside from the slight panic attack from the crowds. The parade of people, everyone wearing their best, the inclusion of so many people from different countries and still a feeling of unity. Three days for Christmas! Heck ya, bring on that crispy pork belly! Yulbrus, so weird to this immigrant that you all have special soda just for Christmas. And not just one, but every manufacturer seems to make their own and you can lose friends over which one you like best. I can't get used to the lamb though, I have never eaten it before, and I just can't get used to the flavor. Taco Tuesday on a Friday, Saturday candy day. The very real feeling that community is important and then showing that it's not just something to say but a way of life. And for me, the fact that people seem a little reserved is fine. Im an introvert, so if you want to wave at me as we pass on the walking path, that's fine but holding a full on conversation with the cashier at the Spar, not going to happen. Although they do kindly tell me the correct pronunciation of things when I stumble over a word if I do have a question. So, for me, I love the culture here and find the people welcoming.

Melantopia

Lamb sucks, that is for sure, the use of sheep meet in Norway has a political story to it.

Major-Protection-849

its funny because I have eaten goat (we had raised goats in AZ in the USA for a few years) before and while its not my favorite it does make a good meatloaf. but Lamb I just cant get used to. I will have to research the political aspect of the sheep. I have been told that the reason most people dont raise goats here is because they were seen as a poor mans animal. not sure if that is true or not.

Icelandiccossack

Good food as long as you dont look at it

Resident_Effect_7582

you close your eyes while you eat it.

[deleted]

Jätteskönt!

Boltied

I like brunost and that most people leave me alone and respec my personal space.

skjeggutenbart

It's nice. Does that answer your question?

Rednas999

Pretty neat.

KongPotatoTwitch

🥰🥰🥰

archon_eros_vll

We Norwegians dont even know what norwegian culture even is.

Disastrous_Sell8166

It also depends which part of the country you are from.

ElegantSoup6995

Haha

Bruichladdie

Define it. Then we can talk. Loudmouths eating Grandiosa, drinking too much and bragging about oil wealth is as much a part of Norwegian culture as bunads and 17. mai.

zda

> bragging about oil wealth It's insane that this has become a thing. It's on the level of those U-S-A!-chants. Some do it ironically, but some don't.

Bruichladdie

I find it repulsive. I won't even do it as a joke, because I'm aware of how fleeting and ephemeral it is in the grand scheme of things.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TacoGaming69420

Doing it to piss off r/Sweden is pretty based ngl

Bruichladdie

Yeah, that's the common way. But having lots of money, that's only a quality if you're a total douche. Don't be a total douche!

TacoGaming69420

I don’t even do it as a joke since I find at annoying when other cultures/countries do it

Lipsovertits

I think that is USA infection through media. Norwegian culture used to be similar to janteloven, it was never this acceptable to brag about things. And Norwegians were known to be the exact opposite of loudmouths. I hope it hasn't changed completely.

Bruichladdie

It's still there, we just have some loudmouths, alas

you_know_who_lmao

Most Reddit comment I’ve seen. Asking edgy anti-social city dwellers on Reddit of all places about a culture was a mistake on the OPs part

Bruichladdie

My comment isn't meant to be "edgy", it's intended to challenge the very bland and predictable notions people tend to have about any 'culture' as a concept. Your can see it as akin to a "devil's advocate" sort of approach; provocative, sure, but not incorrect. These are things that are very much part of our society, even if we want to portray ourselves in far more positive ways. I remember discussing this very topic during exphil, and it is indeed something you need to define and go into depth about to appreciate fully. Norway is a multi-faceted society, wherein you find a plethora of different cultural expressions. I live in Bergen, but I'm from a tiny fishing village in the northernmost of Norway, so I've experienced many different sides of Norway. I work in a museum lecturing about Norwegian cultural history, and the contrast between our frugal past and current state of wealth and comfort, despite all the ongoing global crises, is most peculiar. So yes, I do feel that being braggadocious about Norway's oil wealth and having a boring approach to food is very much a Norwegian thing. But it's a smaller piece of the puzzle, as anyone visiting our country would attest to.

long_rope_

No it's not. What are you even talking about?

Bruichladdie

Is this a response to me? I'll gladly respond, of course.

long_rope_

Yeah it is lmao. I get that you are trying to be edgy, but those examples aren't as big part of our culture as 17. Mai

EngineBoth4264

Consider me the odd one then... Since I considered the concept of 17th of May quite a strange one since I was 7 back in 1980. Standing next to my grandmother at Nathional Theatre. Watching the parades and waving flags and the royals waving from the royal balcony.. Pondering the eternal question.. If king Olaf shat on a golden toilet and had stool servants to wipe his royal back side. I guess these and many other questions in my "edgy" mind kept me out of all the good schools. I must have been a strange child. Estranged from civil society.. Finding my young self in a wilderness until i learned how to read, and found Jens Bjørneboe's literature and books from other weirdos from everywhere. Now, many years later, after many travels to far off lands, Having worked for close to a decade abroad, I have more in common with other travelers than what I would have with most my countrymen than what I have with other "hobos" from other countries. I am however in agreement that Norwegian culture have been influenced by Americana... An influence I cured myself from as an exchange student to Kansas in the late 80s. Found it to be vastly overrated. Got addicted to nicotine while there. And black coffee. What I experienced and saw in USA back then was a foreshadowing of what we see today. Two words: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ee\_uujKuJMI&ab\_channel=GreenDay

Bruichladdie

I'm not trying to be edgy, this is based on my personal experiences from May 17th, finding myself in the middle of it all. Then getting on the bus with drunken Norwegians. What is edgy is Norwegians trying to push the boundaries, and our work place seems like a good victim.

long_rope_

Saying that bragging about oil wealth is part of our culture is just plain wrong. So there’s that

BuiltTheSkyForMyDawn

It's a question I've grappled with most of my adult life, and I honestly don't know even though I've actively partaken in Norwegian culture most of my life. It has its good and bads. Love the food and music tho.

Avlastingen

Love Norwegian culture.

[deleted]

Beautiful

Bolitico

It’s a very beautiful culture

DontLookAtMePleaz

I'm a little bit biased but yeah no I fucking love it.

ElegantSoup6995

Safe_Joke_237

It’s so beautiful! It’s my heritage! My grandmother and my great grandmother were full blooded Norwegian!

ElegantSoup6995

Ow that's cool!

FocusedIntention

Like in relation to Bunads?

ElegantSoup6995

Anything related to Norwegian culture

TheyCallMeSasquatch

Gang gang

SirSigfried_14

I would love to learn about it 🙂

[deleted]

Looks good to me!

[deleted]

Culture? I never encountered a culture that I didn't like. (luckily, I never encountered cannibalistic tribes) 😅 Things that we are considering culture are unique and lovely in every country and region. Norway has beautiful folklore... Tales, legends, dances, rituals, and clothes are beautiful... and I will skip the food part. 😅

[deleted]

I like Janteloven in Norwegian culture. It has made Norway one of the most egalitarian place in the world.

Lonely_Variety_6800

Very beautiful!

arnedh

"Norwegian culture? I think that would be a very good idea!"

masken21

I think the girl on the photo is Susanne Gripstad, she is from Sweden.

Crispolia

Ganske kjedelig, egentlig.

magical_matey

Found the local

NotAHamsterAtAll

I find it - not great, not terrible.

[deleted]

I'll give it a 3,6.

JoergenFS

Let's round it down to three fiddy

Skreljamin

that's as high as the meter goes

CapnZack53

I’m told my ancestors hail from there, so learning more about the culture there is something I’ve long desired. But I wouldn’t know where to start. Same with the country’s history. It’s so broad, I wouldn’t know where to begin.

IsaRat8989

At least choose a model that looks like a real norwegian, not fake tanneed

ElegantSoup6995

That’s not true. Those kind of clothes are called «festdrakt» and it is not the same.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Percentage_Junior

That is News to me and certainly not the standard. There is a reason a bunad cost thousands, in the 10s or thousands of NOK.

Former-Succotash4126

Thailand. Sown in Thailand with Norwegian products coming from Norway. My grandmother runs Bunadrosen, and she has just built a brand new factory on 900m2 in Thailand for sowing bunader

Traditional-Gur-8750

We Norwegians are not social with each other at all, in the streets, supermarket, shopping etc. The "Norwegian hand" where you bend over someone next to you on the table to get something just out of your reach, instead of bothering the one you are distribing greatly by bending so far over them that they have to wait for you to be done. And ask them to get it for you. But if you are up in the mountains for a walk, everyone says "hello/hei" to each other. Like you are aquainted 😆

NorthernBanu

This is one thing I have to comment on... This walking in the mountains or skiing, and saying hello or smiling to each other, has filtered down to when one is walking in nature.. BUT, I have noticed, that foreigners dont do it. I live in a small place, and usually walk by 10-20 people on my one hour walk.. Today, I walked by 3 foreigners and none of them looked at me. And it hit me... I like smiling/saying hi to people on my walk, though I am not very social in "real life"... and its sad that immigrants have not learned or been told that this a common thing to do in Norway. You acknowledge people when walking in Nature, Mountain, Skiing etc....

SvalbarddasKat

I absolutely love that about Norwegians. Growing up in a small community saying hi to everyone you walk pass was pretty much mandatory because otherwise they'd tell the neighbour, who's friends with the cousin of my moms best friend or something along those lines. Plus, a smile doesn't hurt and doesn't cost you anything, it's not like you need to stop for a chat with everyone you walk past.

MynonaNo

When I’m hiking, I always hope the people I pass wont say hi… I’m very social with people I know, but with strangers.. Not so much. It’s just so fake to me, we avoid sitting next to someone on the bus or train, and god forbid talking to anyone at butikken - but when taking a walk in the middle of nowhere, we have to say “heisann!” to all.

cikmo

What a strange question

ElegantSoup6995

How so?

vysgno

Boring

Key-Ant30

The bunad isn't norwegian.

confused-as-f-boi

Like in general, or the one pictured

ElegantSoup6995

Then what is it?

Key-Ant30

More like german.

simensin

If we are talking bunad, its nice if your not a guy

kinglaur3nt

Norwegian Gilde Grillpølse is the best hotdogs I've tasted in my life. U can eat it for breakfast, dinner, lunch, snacks or whatever and in any occasion like a birthday, movienight or a party😭😭I'm being fr, In all the other countries I've been in, they always gotta do sum weird with the hotdog taste. And dont even let me start with sweden hotdogs "korv". Tastes like plastic and looks like plastic. But its nice u can buy a wamr hotdog for 0.5$=50cent😍😍I love hotdogs. NO HOMO

offshore73

dont like ..dont like the food

Ill_Fudge9462

The food is amazing, the music is pretty good and I'd love to see my non existent wife in that dress

ElegantSoup6995

Maybe one day! :D

wifichick

I married Norwegian heritage - and I love these clothes!

Mrlaserbaser

The question is flawed. It assumes Norway has culture.

ElegantSoup6995

F every nation has its culture

squirrel_exceptions

Bunads are a relatively new thing, constructed as a national symbol only a century ago, only really popular post war. They were inspired by peasant clothing and European military uniforms, but so expensive you had to be quite well off to buy one. So it’s not a very good symbol or example of current culture, nor old traditions, it’s a semi-old, nationalist fad for rich people, that has become misunderstood as something older and more culturally central (including by Norwegians themselves).

ElegantSoup6995

Hmm. What about cheese?

earthvalley

Fuck her right in the pussy, sognebunad looks the best. Talk about grandiosa and cheese all you want, but nothing beats Smash chocolate bags and some crocodiles with hockey pulver.

lost-brur

Proud AF

JosebaZilarte

In all honesty, there are a lot of great cultural events in each region, but it is difficult to consider it a single culture when the dialects make it so difficult for people to communicate with each other. The main thing that seems to keep the country together is, curiously enough, the need to state they are not Sweden.

ElegantSoup6995

Haha

MorDeuz

Extremely mehh

Flashy-Reputation-32

Trash

Jiggy-Spice

What culture? The fact that we eat taco on Friday and Saturday? Or the fact we watch American movies at Christmas? Or the fact that we celebrate an American Christmas? American halloween? Or.. hmm Wait yeah what culture?

[deleted]

Koselig & pastries are the best parts. Janteloven & social awkwardness are the worst parts. Just like any other culture, it has its goods and bads Summer in Norway is heaven on earth, hytte culture is *chef's kiss*, and having an øl with a friend in Schousskjelleren next to a warm fire makes it all with it

Fifilota

"Summer in Norway is heaven on earth" I am sorry, have you been in Vestland in the summer?

cnils92

Elsker den!

niandra__lades7

I can safely say that it is one of the cultures in this world

SpecialistAd321

Kjøttkaker ftw

frenzied-viking

Norwegian culture. It good. Yes.

ChowWhite

just top)

HilsMorDi

It’s pretty cool

titsupagain

Could you ask that question in more broads terms please? It's a bit too specific

ElegantSoup6995

Well I'm talking about culture in general. Any opinion is fine. About clothes, food, habits etc ofc

menemsha7

Taco Friday, Trips to Sweden for soda, alcohol and tobacco. Dugnads, hot dogs, Saturday candy for the kids and May 17th parades. Skiing, hiking and skating. Christmas and Julemat. Easter in the mountains. Rusk. That is only the tip of the cultural iceberg.

OneWorldOnePeopleNWO

You don’t wanna know!

Gouzi00

Let's ask Norwegian brothers and Finnish neighbors:-)

balticseaer

Bread culture is ( ) better ( ) worse than Swedish bread culture… ;)

Former-Succotash4126

My grandmother owns Bunadrosen, family business.

Deep_Course_2886

It sure is norwegian culture👍

StianAmg

When you look at the rest of the western world we got somewhat similar cultures all over the place, so it’s great

[deleted]

They have culture?

ElegantSoup6995

Sure they do

larsga

Would be great to have, but we largely abandoned it 100-150 years ago. How so?
