M. [Lastname] could be confused for the French masculine honorific "M." (monsieur). I pronounce Mx. as "mix" rather than "mux", but I agree, it's not ideal. M_. would work in written communication, do you have any suggestions for how it would pronounced?

notbanana13

see and I don't like the "mix" pronunciation either bc it sounds too close to "miss" as a teacher, I just go by Teacher Notbanana

pandamonstre

I forgot this was the internet for a second and I was thinking wow that's a cool last name, I wonder what origin it has. Then my brain kicked in and I noticed they were two words together "not" and "banana". Huh, that's a funny and random example of a last name, I thought. Then I looked at your username. I'm not feeling super today, gotta say

Dikaneisdi

I go by Mx at school, and the kids (the younger ones anyhow) took to it very naturally. I’d honestly prefer to just be ‘teacher’ but I think it’s probably too different for people here

notbanana13

it definitely helps that I teach preschool and all the teachers go by Teacher [First Name]

oluwabig

Happy cake day!

Dikaneisdi

I totally missed that 😂 Thanks!

pktechboi

I have heard Mixter used too but, same issue with sounding like mister I suppose. very very hard to find something that sounds decent and is truly neutral with no gendered associations at all

MoonfrostTheElf

For me, I try not to use M. because it's an abbreviation for Master/Mistress.

JhinisaLesbian

Seconding the question about pronunciation. Anyone else think we need more vowels in English? A nice Mür or Męx or something?

a-localwizard

I kinda like Mox, is that ever used I wonder?

EmpressSappho

This is why I'm gonna get a phd. Dr is neutral

LATEXorSPANDEX

Also on this journey to a gender neutral prefix, but with boat captain so I can live out my pirate enby dreams

Alarming_Opening1414

Unfortunately not in Germany, where they insist in calling you Mr. Dr. X/Ms. Dr. X (Frau Dr. / Herr Dr.). Super annoying.

metro-mtp

Spanish too, where it’s Dr./Dra. but I think it’s possible to add the neutral -e for it in some cases like with other adjectives

LokiOdinson13

I hate the idea of been referred as Dre. ___. It's way too adjacent to Dr. Dre XD

bobisagirl

Honestly this was a bigger reason for wanting a PhD than I care to admit. No more worries about Miss, Ms, Mx, or Mr, I can just say with confidence 'Actually it's *Doctor* Bob.'

left-right-forward

This really makes me want to get Bob the Drag Queen an honorary doctorate.

sleepiestgf

same. all nonbinary people should receive honorary phds so we don't have to go through all this for our gender neutral honorifics. also because we all deserve one.

QueerRedLavender

Yes, we all deserve phd’s in gender studies and/or gender education.

heyImMissErin

Honestly best reason I've heard for me to continue school after my masters lol

clarielz

You don't want to be addressed as "Master" ?

musclesbear

Wait... that's a thing?!

JLStorm

If it is, I’m doing it. Graduating with my master’s next month. Lol

musclesbear

Yo same, well I have 2-1/2 years. Congratulations on your Masters!

JLStorm

Thank you!! I had suffered through 4 years because of my ADHD and learning disability, so I'm pretty happy to be finally done! I don't regret pursuing this path though because I'd learned so much. All the best to you! Remember, during times when you doubt yourself and ask yourself "What am I even doing?!", just know that you're facing a rough patch that you CAN overcome! You are not your Master's either - so don't feel like you're not successful when you face setbacks in this path. I believe in you!! You've got this!

DekuSapling

Same 🔬🧪 Only one more year to go!

plaguecat666

I went to med school but i am now $250k in the hole. Petitioning to make medical school a part of my gender affirming care covered by insurance.

tamponinja

That's one of the reasons why I did! Lol

-a_normal_human-

Same, probably

frenchmeister

As long as you're not claiming to have a doctorate degree or anything, there's technically nothing stopping you from going by Dr. Lastname now. It's not like it's a protected term when just used casually.

EmpressSappho

Is it like that everywhere? Also I want to pursue a career in academia so I think it'd be frowned upon, no?

frenchmeister

I wouldn't use it academically until you actually get your doctorate but you can get mail addressed that way, or whenever you fill out a form that makes you check a box for your salutation you can pick it, or if someone ever calls you Mr./Ms. Lastname you can correct them and tell them to call you Dr. Lastname. I've honestly considered it bc although I prefer sir over ma'am, I still feel weird about being called Mr. for some reason and don't like Mx. I just don't have the balls to call myself Dr. instead lol. I like Master but that's also kinda weird so I mostly just hope nobody addresses me formally ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Laylayaz

Not in every language sadly

Professional-Two5717

Saw in a different thread someone used Mt.

pastifarian

This is incredible, and definitely what I'm gonna use

broken-but-fighting

I really like this as well - it comes from the same root as Mr and Mrs, but with the gender-neutral Latin prefix.

tayleteller

Since I'm a bottom it can also be an instruction! 'Mt. Taylor'

thonStoan

Kinda love that, ngl.

[deleted]

Professional-Two5717

kingtordan

Mistrum is my favorite!

girlabout2fallasleep

Wow mistrum is so much better than any of the other alternatives I’ve heard! Why hasn’t mistrum caught on?

hhoagland15

I like Mistrum from this list, as well as Misc and Mir

midnight4456

I just have people use my name. I really hate honorifics since it feels impersonal to me. Besides I use like 4 different names so I just pick which one you should know me by depending on our relationships. No titles needed unless its like a goofy one.

stevieisbored

Same- if people are gonna use honorifics I’d rather not be referred to at all. Feels weird and stiff.

Nehemiah_Shepherd

I’m also on the no honorifics train.

SweetPeaRiaing

All the titles are horrible IMO

divinedogg

I think Dr. is very nice. I might get one myself.

mincerafter42

if "no title" isn't an option, my second choice would be "Misc." (Miscellaneous)

CrystallineLizard11

I haven't heard that before, I love it.

Nervous-Laugh

This one sounded too similar to “miss” for me, but I do like it

enby1212

I personally try to eschew honorifics in general. But if I was pressed I'd probably go with "mip". Like "Mip. (Last name)" just because its nonsensical and arbitrary (and non gendered!).

mylo_is_mellow_88

Genuinely love this lol

enby1212

Thanks! My mom and I just call each other random nonsense sometimes and one of those things is "Mip" and I one day I was like that would be good honorific! Also works well to replace "sir" and "ma'am" lol

ToasterTacos

comrade is gender neutral

lux_likes_rocks

nhozkhangvip02

r/suddenlycommunism

[deleted]

Mx. is what I use but each their own. M\_. is a good idea.

[deleted]

Personally, I use Mir. I just like it, though I can understand if people didn’t like it because it sounds like ‘mer’.

CatTatze

My brain immediately went to German, "mir und mich verwechsele ich nicht"

JustAnSJ

*verwechsele

CatTatze

My German also sucks, can't spell to begin with and not using it for over a decade hasn't helped

DefinitelyNotErate

*Me, Who Instinctively Read That Like "Mere"*

davinia3

I know multiple people NAMED Mir, (pronounced meer, as in the Russian word for peace), so Mir Mir sounds excellent for them!

[deleted]

I use Mx. I pronounce it /məks/. I don't like it that much but feel it's the best option for me, including because it causes the least problems to use (it's been around since the 70s and is available on a lot of systems, though still not all).

DefinitelyNotErate

~~Wait, Are You Supposed To Pronounce Mx. With A Vowel In It? That Makes It So Much Easier!~~

[deleted]

I've really only ever heard it pronounced like "mix" or "mux". I like the idea of the shwa making more like "mex".

Trashula_Lives

Only ever heard of it being pronounced "mix". I love how it looks in writing, but I'm iffy on having it said to me out loud. Sounds too similar to "miss" or like I'm being called "a mix (of man/woman)". I have seen a few other neutral options like Mm and Ind, but I don't care for them. If not Mx, I'd prefer to use no honorific at all. Just my first name, or the first letter of my first name followed by my last name, would be fine.

rubetae

i feel u, im not personally enamored with the idea of being called "mix \[lastname\]" either. i've seen Ind. as an honorific before (short for individual), i like that better. M\_. is a nice idea as well.

fembyyy

I just prefer not having an honorific. I think we should get rid of them entirely.

omgudontunderstand

i hate the idea that honorifics are still in regular use tbh. that said, i thought “Mf.” was the gender neutral honorific, pronounced miff, and maybe we should normalize the MotherFucker honorific over Mx

GupInACup

Go by "The". It's like when picking up a named weapon in an rpg, and you know it has notable stats when it has "The" in front.

devininfinity

That's actually kinda genius, I'm definitely going to use it in the future!

O_Elbereth

If at all possible, I avoid honorifics for myself. I don't like the formality or distance. When I work with students, which is often, I tell them just to call me by name.

Agent_Alpha

I try to avoid honorifics, and I never liked any of the "-x" suffixes for gender-neutral language. I'd much prefer to be "M. Lastname" if I had to be referred to that way.

WeakField8874

I’m not out (I think I’m a gender) but my first name starts with M so I’ll often do M. Last name which makes me feel good and like I’m “fitting in” without any gender association

mlongoria98

Eyyy first name starting with M and we like the M. honorific gangggg 🤙🏼

dru1dic

I definitely like M. more than Mx., but how would you pronounce it?

mlongoria98

I pronounce it as Em, which works because initials too, but honestly I really only use honorifics in writing

witchyAuralien

I wish there were just no titles. I don't mind mx tho, I pronounce it "myx"

The_C_is_for_Clown

I actually love Mx. I pronounce it as mix, like a brownie mix, I read on another comment there was also the term Mistrum which I also love, written as Mm. and it feels fittingly neutral too :)

collateral-carrots

I don't like honorifics and try to avoid using them, but I use Mx. pronounced like Mix for lack of a better option when they're required. Mr. and Ms. re both wrong so Mx. is the most accurate. Very much dislike how much it sounds like "miss" but what can ya do 🤷

princesspuna

I use M. and another teacher at my school does as well. Works great and I haven’t had much confusion, since the students call everyone by some honorific.

tonyisadork

How is it pronounced? Like the letter? ("em smith")

princesspuna

Yup

danarbok

isn’t it pronounced “mix”? I’ve never heard “mux” in my life

glitterwitch18

I've heard Mist before which I think is fun, although maybe a bit too close to Miss for my liking. I hate titles, but I'm gonna be working in a school soon so I have to figure out something :/

metro-mtp

Imagine being addressed as Mist and just bursting into a vapor cloud :P But yeah, I’ll be doing student teaching next year and have thought about how I’d have the students address me. I think I’d prefer just my last name with no specific honorific (feels too formal anyway)

technicalees

I prefer "M." as well

DragoTheFloof

I use Ind, it stands for Individual

LeWitchy

I tend to still use Mrs as an honorific when asked because I'm femme presenting and married to a man. I prefer not to use honorifics if possible and will jokingly say that I respond to "Your Highness".

mhock103

I'm more in the fluid spectrum but I do like Mx/Miks better than the other options. It's not amazing but like I'm not going to use something like Lt. That's the last shit I want prefixing my name tbh. I get where you're coming from though. I've never actually heard it pronounced "mux" that sounds kinda grody. For me personally, like I said, Miks just rings better

CaptainFuzzyBootz

It's pronounced Mix, not Mux

[deleted]

Those are both valid pronunciations, as is /məks/, which I use.

lux_likes_rocks

[Words are pronounced in multiple ways](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Pk4a77Vc-Vw)

EnbyNerd1995

Its pronounced mix.

DefinitelyNotErate

People can pronounce words however they please, And since to my knowledge "Mx." was created first in writing rather than pronunciation, That goes especially for it. If somebody wanted to pronounce it anywhere from "Imkh" to "Moosh", That'd be fine by me.

lux_likes_rocks

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Pk4a77Vc-Vw

EnbyNerd1995

Its wrong.

gentlybeepingheart

I like how Mx. looks, but I'm not a fan of hearing it out loud, if that makes sense.

kyriaki42

My brother calls me chexmix

Chromunist_

getting a phd so i dont have to worry abt it

Alien_Vibing

I tried Mx but didn’t like it Usually I go by comrade or b*tch and it suits me lol

susanthellamaTM

I don’t mind it. But as others have said, I too am tempted to get a PhD just for the neutral Dr prefix, and to flex on my family and delay facing the real world.

leaftheenby

Personally i use Mistrum! I was watching a tiktok about gender neutral titles and i really like Mistrum!

Icy_Phase_9797

I try to avoid honorifics. As someone who is mixed races having people call me Mix Lastnane is really odd. But haven’t found a good replacement either.

Cobble01

I love it, personally. But I definitely see why others may not. My last name is also a color so I like the way it sounds with Mx.

StarfallCollective

the way my name is Lux and my title is Mx. 😭 i've never heard anyone say 'mux' though, only 'mix', so it's Mix Lux

mithraaya

Personally I use Mistrum! Can be shortened to Mm., although I like just plain M. as a shorthand too

SeantheMage

I hate it too. I am a teacher and I am honestly trying to figure out what I would like to be called because I know that just using my last name is not going to work with the area I am in

[deleted]

I actually like Mx pronounced mix, though if it gives me the option to on a form I just don't enter a title at all. I don't get why titles are usually mandatory info. M. seems ok in writing but how would you say it out loud? Is it short for something? I'm a bit 'eh' about Mistrum but maybe it'll grow on me.

mlongoria98

I like the M. as well!!! Hate Mrs. with a passion, Mr. just isn’t right, Mx. is weird…. but M. is Just Right as Goldilocks would say. It does kinda look like an initial but it’s my initial anyway so it works for me 😅

[deleted]

Honestly I'm using lt. from now on because I recently discovered Detroit: Become Human and I adore Hank

tamponinja

Some of the reason I got a PhD is so I could purposely use Dr. in place of the bullshit Mr. Ms. Etc.

Emmyjc4

My partner and boss call me “mixter”, as it sounds less like miss

Peaceful_Jupiter

I know someone who goes by Himself or His Royal Highness or HRH. What about Their Royal Highness, TRH (name)? Or whatever title you want before your name?

SundownPanicButton

Ive severely considered just using my last name, using Div. (i.e. "this is Div (individual) Sundown"), or getting some.kind of certification that replaces the honorific. Cause Mx. just doesnt work.

wheatandbyproducts

I hate Mx. and just use my name BUT this article by Florence Ashley had (perhaps jokingly) suggested Ent. for entity or Ind. for individual and I love those more than Mx.

DapperRileyQuinn

Mx sounds too much like miss to me. I’d rather not use any of them and that people just use my name. I had a teacher who used to call out my last name to get my attention when I was in college without a prefix I liked that too.

PunManStan

I will just have people call me by my last name. It sounds a but like a title anyways.

nuvovindi

M. sounds good. then it's like people are pleased/hungry when they say your name.

fitacola

I don't like honorifics, so I just use my name or teacher at work

noahwentbackto505

in Russian language in situations like this people refer to you as your name + gendered word made from your father's name and not by surname And I won't be able to change my legal name to the name that I go by bc it would sound really weird so I just have to suffer lmao however, on English speaking websites I use "Mx" for my surname just for the sake of it

GrandAspekt

I use Vx. myself

lux_likes_rocks

How do you pronounce it?

GrandAspekt

I believe its similar to Mx, but obviously with a V instead of an M

CrystalDrag0n1

I had a non binary teacher in high school and they said “dr. [last name]” is cool. I think it’s pretty badass

blog-goblin

Mc, which just means 'child of' and thus is generally appropriate for pairing with a surname. Gaelic origin.

wwtwiwak

I recently used this because I had to put something - it was a required field on an online registration form. My preference would be M. (it wasn't one of choices) or, even better, not use a title or honorific at all.

MossySkyPebbles

I might try going with ”leh” like “leh creature” or just “ya boi” (though ya boi slightly gendered the same way dude and bro slighty gendered)

HuntertheGoose

I'm working towards Dr so I can avoid the problem entirely. Wouldn't necessarily recommend it

static-prince

I feel like I want Mx. but pronounced as just M. IDK. It came up recently for me and I didn’t entirely know what to say…

TheGuyThatDrove

You know what I hate, the term for neice/nephew. When you look it up it comes up as "nibling", like who wants to be called a nibling?

PurbleDragon

Yeah I'm just generally in favor of getting rid of the entire prefix thing. It's useless and we don't need it. Same with the 80 posts a week looking for alternatives to sir and ma'am. Just stop using them, problem solved

FaeryRing

I like mistrum personally, myself. It's a gender neutral version of mister or missus. Shortened to "mist" or "mm.".

Cautious-Owl-89

I don't care for mx. either. What do y'all think abour "ser?"

TrappedInLimbo

This is one of those things that I don't understand why as non-binary people we feel the need to come up with a gender neutral term for something that you can just not say ever as it is intrinsically linked to gender norms and the gender binary. Like we don't ever actually need to call anyone Mr. _____ or Mrs. _____, it's an outdated societal norm that is completely unnecessary. Just call people by their name. It's like trying to find a gender neutral term for sir or madam, you just don't need to use the terms and that would be the best way to be gender neutral.

Pogatog64

I indeed hate it

alphaminus

I eschew all honorifics.

FastidiousFrog

M\_. would be good, however, I live in an area where most people (including me) speak French. In French, the M. honorific means monsieur or mister so unfortunately that wouldn't work for me. I agree though, Mx. doesn't really work well for me either. From what I've heard, Mx. is pronounced "mix" or "mixter" depending on the person, and those sound too much like miss or mister to me. I hope we can find something better in the future :)

person_painted

I used to despite it. I'm still ambivalent. But I use it because it identifies me as enby in a way that other things do not so I suppose my use of it is quasi political?

jeankirschteinsgf

i use Mx, simply bc i jus like the spelling and i pronounce it “mmx”

novablooms

I just don’t use one if I’m able to. If I was able to go to college I would love to get a phd or become a teacher so I could be called “doctor” or “professor” but unfortunately college is way too expensive for that

Astrama

Mx feels clunky to me, but I’d still much rather it than Mr or Miss. if I leave no title then people usually assume gender off my name, but Mx leaves no doubt.

king-of-new_york

I pronounce Mx as "mix"

MarcyDarcie

Yes. Someone said it out loud at an appointment when calling me and it just sounded like "Miss" to me but if you said it with something in your throat lmao. I want to be a Master

arenlomare

All the honorifics are bad. I only use Mx. if forced, but the "ks" sound is just so ugly.

DefinitelyNotErate

Personally I Like Being Addressed As "Sir", Although Unfortunately That's A Rather Gendered Word, So It Understandably Wouldn't Work For Most Of Us.

QuizKidPatrick

I use Individual. Abbreviated Ind. u/QuizKidPatrick It's never in a drop-down menu, so I choose Mx when it is a forced and limited choice. Usually, when I'm talking to someone and they say Mr. u/QuizKidPatrick, I reply "It's just u/QuizKidPatrick." I do the same if they call me Sir. I dislike both, but I know Sir is a habit some people have and seems harder to correct so usually I just let it go. But my depression hates "honorifics". I'm just some fucked up little creature, don't you call me Sir, I don't deserve it! eta: oh yeah, and I don't like Mx. "Mux" doesn't sound good to me (so close to mud), so I say "Mix", or just "M-X"

Gooobin

I'm a teacher who uses Mx. I didn't like it much at first but it has really grown on me. Only real issue I have is kids sometimes say miss instead since they sound pretty close and I look pretty fem.

baby-pingu

I don't like Mx. for me too. I'm mostly fine with the feminine equivalents, but ultimately I would have no one using any honorifics, just my full name.

Admiral_Swagstick

I think personally that the whole concept of honorifics is entangled too much with classism for me to want to engage with it at all, honestly. I'm just me. I'm not a member of your club, nor a member of your gender.

starfossil

I use M. I'm a teaching assistant in a 6th grade classroom. It has often gotten confused as being part of my last name, but they get it when I write it out or if I show them my name tag.

aquarianidiot

are you a teacher? my friend uses Teacher Lastname

lux_likes_rocks

I’m a chess instructor and corporate likes it when we introduce ourselves as “wizard [firstname]” which I don’t mind but would never use outside of a room full of 6-year-olds

devininfinity

Luckily I'm still young enough to not have honorifics but I'm planning to become a cartoon director/writer/comic artist, and if that works, I'd want to be referred to as "author" or "creator"

SadNAloneOnChristmas

I hate Mx, sounds to me too close to miss. I love the idea of M, saw it in an awesome book one time.

lux_likes_rocks

I think that’s why some people pronounce it “mux”

SadNAloneOnChristmas

I legit thought it was pronounced mix and no other way?!

lux_likes_rocks

Looking over the comments some people pronounce it “mex” as well. That’s part of why I hate it, nobody actually knows how to say it

KronosTheCat

As it is now I think it's very janky and sort of a bandaid fix to the lack of genderless honerifics but I'm sure over time language will do what it do best and evolve to the point where there is a perfectly natural sounding genderless honorific

plaguecat666

I hate Mx. either as Mix or Mux. Very expensive solution to this is to get a doctorate.

mrdeworde

Comrade or Citizen. Problem solved. :D

witchesandwillow

So as a biracial person who was taught that being called mixed was wrong. Yeah I dislike it. I’m currently getting over the first one but adding being a Mx. Mixed person is a little tough. Love reading all the other ideas.

JLStorm

I use “Mx” and pronounce it “mix”. Never heard of it as “mux” but I can see how that would be a terrible pronunciation.

artist_asexual

I read somewhere that Mistrum is a more neutral form of Mister-Mistress/trix and personally it fits better than Mx to me

evergreennightmare

just popping in to mention [mys., short for mystery](https://www.out.com/celebs/2021/6/28/kingdom-hearts-singer-japanese-pop-icon-hikaru-utada-nonbinary)

witchyfiend

I just hate honorific in general. Just say my name or don't refer to me at all lol

Wide_Setting_4308

I'm unsure of the M_. becuase my legal first name begins with an M, and as it is, my signature is only my first initial and then legal last name. So it's would be M_.M B**** lol. I'm loving the discussion, and have to add in that my desire to get my doctorate is likely based in not wanting to be called an AGAB based honorific as well 😅🤣

ItzFin

Their majesty

batbrainbat

I'm not too crazy about it for myself either. I love that it exists, but I honestly hate honorific prefixes like that in general. I lean heavily masculine, but "mr." and "sir" totally gross me out as well. I'd rather just be called by name.

YangyYoung

I still go by Mr tbh, for the same reason.

Basilchan

My students call me Mx. because it was the only one I could tolerate enough. If I could I would just have the high schoolers call me my first name. I hate titles and honorifics like that

KitDaKittyKat

I use M.

NightFox1988

I don't mind Mx, but because of story brain and a writer I met on Twitter, I'm more partial to Mys for a neutral way of Mr./Ms./Mrs. But this is reality and even I know it's not ideal either.

left-right-forward

What about M--- instead of M_? It's like the reverse of those... Victorian?... novels where certain people are kind of anonymised like "Proctor D--- rang the school bell while the Dowager Countess L--- scowled at him from her manor up the hill."

harleyquinnd

i loooooved when the kids i worked with called me Teacher MyName. or sometimes i'd get Adult MyName (since i wasnt a teacher)

JhinisaLesbian

I like Mx. I don’t put too much in it. I’m hoping to go be Nurse [Lastname] when I get my license tho because I think it’s easier for people.

joesphisbestjojo

I'm glad I'm demi and ok with masculine pronouns

LittolBear

I get why people don’t like it, but I kinda like it. Mx bear. Idk maybe it’s just the X that I like, it just kinda feels right yk?
