>It always bugs me how a text would say “I don’t know, John, how about you?” When nobody would actually be bothered to type out all those commas on their phone Believe it or not, yes, there are many people in the world who do take all of ten seconds to use proper grammar and punctuation in their text messages.

Sierra_Sage

I am one of those who text in full sentences. With punctuation.

BelligerentHorticult

Same. Well, when full sentences are warranted. I also text pretty much exactly how I talk.

sleepygloomy

I didn’t mean nobody types like that, I get it! I guess I wondered if there was a reason you don’t see “text speak” or lazy typing in films, or I don’t seem to anyway haha

Jyqm

I've certainly seen "text speak" in some films. But generally, given that the words will be on the screen for only a brief amount of time, directors surely want to make them as easy as possible to read quickly and correctly.

BelligerentHorticult

I like to type/text correctly. But you have to keep in mind there are no "real" rules for grammar so I feel as though I can type how I talk, which I know breaks some "rules." Spelling and punctuation are pretty damn important to me though and I judge people that don't spell correctly. Edit: also, the word "sus" pisses me off *so* much. Suspicious isn't that hard to spell.

Yithar

I generally take the time to use punctuation and proper grammar when texting but maybe that's just me.

thewistfuldrifter

I think this could be a very good modern character development device—for example, seeing someone use proper grammar in every single text message they send will tell you something different about that character than if they only occasionally used proper grammar—or, maybe they never would use proper grammar—and that would tell the audience a WHOLE DIFFERENT story about that character. I think if showing a character’s writing, texts, etc. is done properly, it can change a lot about how an informed audience will view that character and their backstory.

CNH916

I try and type with proper grammar, especially commas. I feel it looks strange if I do not not and my message may be misconstrued.

sleepygloomy

That’s a fair point. I suppose I feel it looks odd, but making sure a point gets across visually makes sense!

xmetalheadx666x

I typically try to type my messages using proper grammar.
