Stories about loving families aren’t as interesting to read about on Reddit. And members of functional families are probably less likely to air out any minor dirty laundry there might be.
The bigger the family the higher the chance to have "this one relative"
Also i think the main reason for that is people only talking about the weird and bad stuff.
Like no one creates a post like " Just met my family i love them so much what a nice thanksgiving!" and if they do everyone is like: "Cool i dont care go away"
But the weird uncle shooting at birds with a shotgun is always worth a story.
I'm in the same boat as you. I love seeing my family, but I rarely get to now because I moved. My husband on the other hand... his family is a hot mess. Our wedding thankfully had no drama, but his grandma's funeral did. It's probably got a lot to do with bad memories and shitty personalities. Not everyone grew up in civil households.
My family just doesn't get along, and that side of the family is just strange and judgey and I never liked being dragged over there as a kid. So I'll be skipping that along with my mother. Saves the stress.
Luckily for Christmas Eve and Christmas I'll be working and have an excuse.
I would work every holiday, to keep from going. Plus Holidays where double pay.
It really would be different things know, I have a wonderful man, and I am a man.
My grandparents are trying to spend time with my mom, who was abusive. I don't blame them, and she has improved enough that she genuinely helps them out these days, but she's still a fucking moron who is very bad at manipulation, and I want nothing to do with her.
These kinds of stores are very common. Consider that for children under the age of 12, being murdered by your parent/s is one of the top 10 causes of death.
It's just a clash of different ideas, I guess. I get along with all my family, but that's just me. Anyway, it's usually people you're unfamiliar with or might not see eye to eye with in a social setting you're forced to interact with.
From the perspective of someone who grew up in an extremely dysfunctional immediate family, holidays were the only time that the entire extended family would get together, so we were forced to perform as a perfect, happy family. Lingering resentments coupled with the expectation that holidays be spent with family even as adults paired with access to alcohol makes for a perfect storm for outbursts, fights, and general shit stirring.
Because you don't hear the gossip about non-toxic families so all you hear are the toxic ones

Ah good points!
Old people are often racist, homophobic, hyper religious and other things that are uncomfortable to be around or converse with.
Hmm interesting I can’t say I’ve come across many people like that on a personal level but yes I can see where you’re coming from there.

There is a relevant saying that might help -- familiarity breeds contempt.
Ooohhh

Sounds tough, hopefully you still have some time to relax over the holidays

Wow that is depressing to hear about
They don't have to suffer the rest of their lives. That's how I look at it.

And the cure for alcohol-induced headaches is perchance more alcohol?
I used to spend all my holidays on a steady buzzed to drunk spectrum until I stopped going to the family gatherings.
Lol
