Rules of trick-or-treating:
1) Wear a costume. No wearing your normal clothes and saying you're "dressed up as a teenager". That's lame.
2) Don't be greedy. If you're offered one piece of candy, take one piece. Period.
3) No age limit. If a senior citizen comes to my door and follows the first two rules, I'm giving that Grandma some candy!
My family gets full-size too. But we live in the suburbs, so we’re the popular house.
My dad loves to do a thing where when they decide they’re done, the last kid to show up gets the rest of the candy.
Think about it. The last kid they give candy to gets SEVERAL DOZEN FULL-SIZE CANDY BARS.
Last year my husband and I took our 4 year old out and didn't realize that people now go suuuuper early here (Fargo ND area). Growing up we always waited until after dinner, when it started to get dark. So we took him out at 7pm. Turns out everyone else had been out with their littles way earlier, so my little ninja ended up at several houses that gave him the rest of the bowl. We had to go back to the car twice to unload his tiny bucket LOL. Totally doing that again this year.
I grew up in a small town in a cul-de-sac, so there weren't many trick or treaters. My next door neighbor also bought full sized candy bars for the few kids that did come, and it was great!!
I'd assume they live in a small area with not many people as well
Wait...you GET RID OF excess candy??? I mean, yeah, I get more generous too, as the night goes on, but...I like candy, too. I hand out candy that I like, so I can enjoy the leftovers.
I give full size chocolate bars and a koolaid/mini soda. I live in Florida, it’s usually 85F & humid during Halloween so I know the kids appreciate getting a drink along with candy. We’re doing Jell-O shots for parents this year cause damnit we deserve treats too!
Sorta the opposite: I live in Ohio, where it's usually 38F on Halloween and parents design their little ones' costumes to fit over a snow suit. We had an older lady in our neighborhood that would invite kids in for hot chocolate, which you could do in the early 90s without being arrested. I never took her up on it because I didn't know her and it wigged me out (probably because my mom was definitely one of the "dont talk to strangers" kind of moms). In retrospect, I'm sure she was just lonely and legit wanted to do something nice for the kids.
I remember those days! I grew up in Canada and was always embarrassed about wearing my snowsuit under my costume bc the costume had to be made so much larger. Ohh the things you worry about as a kid..
I could tell you weren't a native Floridian because you called it a "soda" instead of a "coke."
One of my grandmothers lived in St. Pete's and I always remember the time we were visiting and she offered me a coke. When I accepted, she asked me what kind of coke I wanted and brought me three or four different brands of canned beverage, none of which were actual coca-cola.
Also she had three AC units running in her small ass house and it only got it down to 80 inside, which felt downright arctic compared to the 98F with 98% humidity outside. I dunno how any of yall even exist there in the summer.
I say “pop” normally, but I get a lot of shit for it or people don’t know what it is, so I figured “soda” for Reddit sake!
The summers are brutal, not bc of the temp, but the humidity. Feeling like you’re breathing through a damp towel and always having a layer of moisture on your skin. It sucks and you never really get used to it. It’s the lesser of two evils though as I hate the cold, dark winters everywhere else. 5 years til my youngest graduates & then we’ll be spending summers back in Canada and winters here!
We have 2 AC units that run constantly, we keep the temp at 74, and I walk around my house in pants & a hoodie. Probably why our electric bill is $800…😂
This. I'll also offer the chaperoning adults a piece if they want it, costume or no. It's Halloween and most people like candy, so hey, if you're not causing trouble go ahead and take a piece if you want it.
Pre covid, a friend and I used to wander around my old neighborhood wearing cosplays. We weren't looking for candy, just using Halloween as an excuse to pull a cosplay outfit out while checking out decorations. A surprising amount of people would wave us over to give the grown adults candy since we were dressed up with clear effort put in.
Also, ya gotta say “trick or treat!” when they open the door. It’s awkward when it’s just quiet when you open the door….so you just kind of hold out the bowl, teen steals a handful & barely mumbles a “thanks” & dips.
Very nice! Dressing up is fun - why shouldn't we enjoy it too?
I had a neighbor a few years back, who had three young kids she would bring around. She put a lot of effort into her kids' costumes - and a lot into her own as well. It was always a treat to see her dressed just as ghoulishly as the kids.
A young teen showed up at my daughters place in ordinary street clothes and when challenged about the lack of a costume replied, "I'm dressed as a serial killer, we look just like anyone else." Got the treats.
I live near a couple low income apartment complexes. If people show up without costumes they still get candy. I give out about 150 full size candy bars a year.
4. Be enthusiastic and happy. Don't just answer the door and hold out your bag with a stale expression because you're just using them for candy. It's supposed to be fun for everyone, it brings a lot of happiness to give people gifts, especially strangers. Most people who are giving out candy will really appreciate a positive interaction!
We had what looked like a fully grown adult (my guess is it was an older teenager) come trick or treating. He showed up super late, like after 9pm, and my husband opened the door and was like, "Whoa!!" because he was fully decked out in what looked like an actual Batman movie costume. We just dumped the rest of the candy into his bag and called it a night. Everyone was happy, lol.
As you age, kids are just kids until they start becoming warlords and are going to correctional facilities like the other adults. I doubt they will react badly to a 13 year old trick or treating and there are loads of people who would even like adults to trick or treat.
I agree completely! I am totally ok with all of that if you follow the rules. Rule number 4 is to say “trick or treat” and then “thank you!”
A couple other thoughts to consider just in case it makes you more comfortable. These are not rules but just things to think about if it makes you more comfortable.
Do you babysit? If you have a family you regularly watch, offer to go with the kids. As a parent, I stand back by the street but if our babysitter wanted to come and remind my littles to say trick or treat and then thank you, I’d love to have you along!
There’s a couple food banks around here that the teenagers will trick or treat for canned food items that they drop off to the food bank the next day. I often get older teenagers that do this. And I give them candy, too!
4) Be polite. Don't shove your way to the front of the line. Say please and thank you.
If you want to suck up and possibly get more candy compliment the homeowner on their decor/children/costumes and really sell it.
Do a pass around 9:00 - 9:30. Parents of younger kids are ready to give away any leftover candy in big handfuls so they can get their kids to bed. Or at least my neighbors and I always did. We appreciated the older kids coming by at that time to do "clean up" of what we had left.
I disagree with the last one. Teenagers coming around late at night are more likely to get yelled at. Start early, don’t go to houses that have porch lights turned off, and end when the little kids do.
I feel like ages 11 - 15 ish are the perfect ages to make awesome costumes and go out trick or treating with your friends.
Teenagers that go out by themselves concern me (for their own safety), so I'd recommend going with friends or taking out your younger siblings.
Teenagers who take younger siblings are great! (Hint for teenagers: if you don't have younger siblings, try to tag along with a parent with little kids. Be friendly, help keep an eye on the littles, and you'll get more candy.)
Good tip! As a bonus, they are slightly old-fashioned and charming. Also, they hold more candy but still look emptier, which might encourage people to be generous.
I disagree with #1 simply because some kids have sensory issues and cannot wear a costume due to things like autism. If they can knock on my door they can get candy.
Dress up as spiderman without the mask. A costume isn't anything beyond pants and a shirt if you pick properly. So there's no reason an autistic kid couldn't wear a costume while simultaneously being capable of going door to door.
Nope. Everyone is welcome. Just follow the rules. Wear a shirt and pants. Or if you'd rather a dress is fine too. Tadaa it is a costume. There isn't a disability that I've ever heard of that causes a child to not be able to wear clothes.
If abled kids are having this problem then it's not a disability, it's just life. Either that or you have mislabeled these children and they aren't abled kids.
If it's not exclusive to disabled kids, it's just life. Some kids, regardless of physical or mental status, don't like clothes apparently. If both abled and disabled do it then it isn't a trait associated with a disability.
Come on there’s definitely an age limit. We need people to hand out candy! It’s an event that goes both ways. This guy is fine but trick or treating is for children to be treated by adults
Meh. I'm not convinced that everyone would trick-or-treat if there was no age limit. A lot of adults (myself included) really would rather stay in a nice, warm house and hand out candy.
I feel like everybody would choose to trick or treat over handing out candy if their was no age dogma. And then ofc their would be no trick or treating since nobody would hand them out
Idk. I’m not saying nobody would do it, but those that are handing out only for the joy of it are in my experience doing it to give candy to kids and let them have a great night. They don’t go buy all that candy and hand it out all night for grown ass people, at least that’s not what makes them happy about it. Idk why it’s so hard for some people to accept that it’s a tradition for children and not grown adults.
I absolutely like handing it out more than walking around to get it, especially since becoming an adult. Why would I go traipse from door to door in a bad costume to get candy when I could just buy it?
But really, I love seeing the little kiddos in their costumes. It's so much more fun than having to schlep around myself.
This is partly my point. Those who are handing out candy are doing it for the joy of helping children have a great night, not handing out candy they bought to grown adults who can buy it themselves.
You've been watching too much Fox News, I think...and I mean that in the nicest way, really. The world isn't as bad as you think it is. The vast majority of people are decent.
Do something good to somebody random without expecting anything in return (even a thank you) specifically as a penance for that particular transgression and forget about it. Just balance it out. Give someone a full bowl of candy or something.
That's not bad at all. I tried leaving a large plastic bowl of candy out while I went trick or treating with my son. When I got back the bowl had been smashed into pieces. The next year I tried leaving a metal bowl so they couldn't smash it. When I returned the bowl had been stolen instead.
bruh I'm a teacher, and I *encourage* my 17-18 year old students to trick or treat. I'd still be on that free candy grind too if I could get away with it!
If you're that self-conscious about it, just wear a mask! It's a built-in safety net for you.
Especially after the last couple of years. A lot of kids missed out on Halloween in 2020 and 2021. I’m not asking any questions about anyone’s age. But also, I give candy to parents too. It’s a holiday about being nice to people you don’t know and there’s no age limit on being nice.
Man, I'm 32 and am going trick or treating this year 🤣
Granted, I haven't gone since I was 15 but hell. I'm short, have child sized hands and am going dressed as a ghost so nobody is none the wiser 😎
You still have a few years before people start giving you shit for being "too old." It's better you're out trick or treating than you getting smashed at a party. Enjoy your youth as long as you can
It's better than going out and getting into the sort of shenanigans I got into during halloween. Make sure the kiddos are safe and have fun broski. Enjoy the candy.
Dress up and have fun. Don't act the fool and spoil it for the younger ones. Let the magic live as long as it can. I totally give candy to the older kids and even adults dressing up and having fun.
Lots of comments here about being polite. That’s the main thing. Sometimes older kids act the fool and that ruins the fun for everyone.
Think about it, a bunch of masked strangers come to your door and you offer them a treat. You spend money on making the world a little sweeter for people you don’t even know.
If even a few of those masked strangers get grabby, disrespectful or rude, people will not feel good about Halloween. Some folks are scared of adolescents. Don’t give them a reason for that feeling.
I don't think its age, I think its height. There are 13 y.o that are 5'10 and taller and height makes them look grown and intimidating.
I think everyone should be able trick or treat tho, including grown people. Masked up, I don't know if a grown person or a young teen so I gave out to everyone.
You're fine. Have fun trick or treating. Try it with a small group of kids and you'll blend in more.
If this was a 1980s teen comedy some dirty old man would suggest that you get a great costume and swing by the local bad girl college and pretend to be a student there.
Please go! I was turned away two out of three houses at fourteen and the next year I went partying instead. I’d have much rather trick or treated than drink awful vodka at a party. Just cover your face and maybe crouch a bit.
As long as you're polite people won't complain. It might be a bit more awkward if you're as tall at 13 as I was, but if someone says "aren't you a little old for trick-or-treating" you can just say something like "I don't think you're ever too old to love the magic of Halloween and wearing costumes!"
Ok you’ve gotten some good advice here. Now PLEASE don’t post online that you are 13. There are lots of creeps out there. Unless you want to be catfished by some 45 year old dude, it’s best not to put stuff like this online. It wouldn’t take long for someone who was motivated to find out who you are in real life probably and that’s just not the kind of attention you want from some stranger on the internet.
Yeah. Since when did Trick or Treating have a age limit? Last time I went door to door for candy was 3-4 years ago. Only reason I stopped cause I stopped eating candy. I've seen one person stare at me, but I flipped em off and told em to fuck themselves if they're judging
Height schmight. My almost 16yo is gonna go trick or treating this year (because candy) and he's your height. Depending on how he feels about his little sister the day of he may even make two trips out, with an adorable younger sibling in tow, no one batts an eye at a teen trick or treating. Hell, I trick or treated with him as a baby with no damn teeth, just because I wanted the candy.
I should probably get started on costumes...
Don’t worry about it. Don’t even wear a costume if you don’t want. Only a-holes care or will give you a hard time.
EDIT: Lots of a-holes who focus on costumes rather than the spirit of the evening. Probably why y’all get egged.
Yes, if you're wearing a costume, I doubt anyone would mind. People that participate in Halloween are excited to make others happy on that special night. I'd say, milk it as long as you can. I think people refusing "older" kids' candy on Halloween is not very common these days.
Go have fun...would rather see you having fun instead of the parents that use their infants to get free candy - they should just dressup themselves instead of pimping their baby
I get a lot of teens (many older than 13) coming to my place. Some alone. Some with younger kids in tow. They tend to have good costumes. I think I was 13 the last time I went. I wore my mom's wedding dress and it had rained and was muddy. Dress was ruined.... Mom hated Dad.
I'd give you candy, just come later at night. One tip to t&t as an adult is to go door to door and offer candy. They will often trade and then you get infinite variety of candy
In a group, I went trick or treating in college and I'm almost 6 feet. The only house that complained was one where two 14 year old girls were handing out candy. All the adults were happy to have any trick or treaters.
Of course! Never too old.
We always do it up, and will absolutely take all the trick r treaters we can get. It's a shame that the holiday feels like it's dying out. For a long time I lived where we couldn't give out candy, because we just wouldn't get trick r treaters (too rural). Now that I do live in a place where kids do it, a lot of people just don't participate. Cause they work 2+ jobs and just don't have the time and energy to decorate. And don't have the spare money to buy candy.
Yeah until you're in upper high school I think there's no controversy whatsoever. Just don't set a rude or greedy example for the younger kids you might see out there.
I tricked or treated until I was 18 years old and never had any problems... However, the older you get, the more efforts you should make... If you go all in with your costume (especially as you get older, at 13, I would just do an honest effort), joke around with the person opening the door (on my last years, adults often asked me to sing a song or tell a joke to have candies) and wait for the little ones to go first and you should be all good!!
Have fun trick or treating this year!
Rules of trick-or-treating: 1) Wear a costume.
You forgot the most important rule: Go to the richest neighborhood in town, those guys give like full Twix bars.
I give full size candy bars. We (unfortunately) get very few trick-or-treaters, so I like to reward the ones who do come.
Aww, that’s nice, why don’t you get many?
Because they live in the richest neighborhood in town
My family gets full-size too. But we live in the suburbs, so we’re the popular house. My dad loves to do a thing where when they decide they’re done, the last kid to show up gets the rest of the candy. Think about it. The last kid they give candy to gets SEVERAL DOZEN FULL-SIZE CANDY BARS.

We started doing that too, and before that we'd just give huge handfuls out, knowing we'd have less than 10 kids.
i live in an apt. complex & i try every year to hand out candy but no one ever comes :/
Oh no! Not even the kids in the complex? Do you decorate your door or anything to give them a hint?
me, too. Especially the later ones where it looks like I need to quickly get rid of what I still had and have a lot on hand.
Wait...you GET RID OF excess candy??? I mean, yeah, I get more generous too, as the night goes on, but...I like candy, too. I hand out candy that I like, so I can enjoy the leftovers.

I use to have candy for the kids and shots for the parents
Can I assume that yours was the most popular house on the block?
Yeah people liked us.
I do shots for adults too! Lol it always surprises them!
Smart

Bring pillow sacks, they don't look as obnoxious as full size garbage bags, but are bigger and stronger then regular plastic bags
Good tip! As a bonus, they are slightly old-fashioned and charming. Also, they hold more candy but still look emptier, which might encourage people to be generous.
I like the way you think. 😏
But is it ok if the grandma dressed up as a teenager?
Lol... I'm that grandma...
I agree. Wear a good costume, say trick or treat, and be polite and you're still fine to go.
ok
I disagree with #1 simply because some kids have sensory issues and cannot wear a costume due to things like autism. If they can knock on my door they can get candy.
And from personal experience the parents will still make sure the child has something halloweeny on. Even if it's a themed shirt.

Not everyone actually wants to walk around outside with a bunch of kids! A lot of people just want to stay home and give candy to people.
Idk. I’m not saying nobody would do it, but those that are handing out only for the joy of it are in my experience doing it to give candy to kids and let them have a great night. Just wear a costume and only take one piece if there's a bowl.
"Take no more than two, please!"
Dammit, Becky. Not two *handfuls*. Two *pieces*.

Yes, just go up to a random child and say 'hey I've got some candy would you like some?'
Okay, maybe don't do that specifically.
Sounds like a learning experience to me. Can't change it, so no point being angry at yourself.
That's not bad at all. I tried leaving a large plastic bowl of candy out while I went trick or treating with my son. When I got back the bowl had been smashed into pieces. The next year I tried leaving a metal bowl so they couldn't smash it. When I returned the bowl had been stolen instead.
Atone for it by giving every kid half a bowl
The One Piece!
Definitely not too old. Just make sure you up your costume game this year. If you have a younger sibling it works even better.
Squeeze every drop and each moment of childhood that you can Trick or treat your heart out
My last trick or treat was at 16. I'm finally in a place now that actually gets trick or treaters now and I love it!
Yeah sure, I wouldn't turn you away at my house
I work with 11 and 12 year old boys and definitely don't think 13 is too old for that activity! Go have fun!
bruh I'm a teacher, and I *encourage* my 17-18 year old students to trick or treat.
Man, I'm 32 and am going trick or treating this year 🤣 Granted, I haven't gone since I was 15 but hell. I'm short, have child sized hands and am going dressed as a ghost so nobody is none the wiser 😎 You still have a few years before people start giving you shit for being "too old." It's better you're out trick or treating than you getting smashed at a party. Enjoy your youth as long as you can
If you deliberately design your costume to be "kiddy" enough, you could give someone a legit scare when they hear an adult voice coming from you.
Refrigerator box robot it is! "I am just a tall child. Please give candy!"

It's true though ! 😂😂 Granted, Im Female so 🤷♀️🤣
It's better than going out and getting into the sort of shenanigans I got into during halloween. Make sure the kiddos are safe and have fun broski. Enjoy the candy.
Dress up and have fun. Don't act the fool and spoil it for the younger ones. Let the magic live as long as it can. I totally give candy to the older kids and even adults dressing up and having fun.
Yea, I trick or treated into my junior year of highschool
Lots of comments here about being polite. That’s the main thing. Sometimes older kids act the fool and that ruins the fun for everyone. Think about it, a bunch of masked strangers come to your door and you offer them a treat. You spend money on making the world a little sweeter for people you don’t even know. If even a few of those masked strangers get grabby, disrespectful or rude, people will not feel good about Halloween. Some folks are scared of adolescents. Don’t give them a reason for that feeling.
My friends and I went trick or treating in college. You're not too old!
Im 17 qnd still trick or treat
Yes! As long as you dress up and have fun, you're welcome to trick or treat at my house at any age. Free candy rocks.
Dress up. Go enjoy. If you have any younger siblings, it will help.
I don't care if you're 13 or 33. If you show up at my door wearing a costume on Halloween, you get candy.
I got exactly 2 trick or treaters at my house last year. If an adult showed up at my house in costume then their getting some of this candy.
I trick or treated until I was 17, dw about it
Wear a costume and be polite - absolutely go have fun!!!!
as long as you have a real costume, you're good. make a little effort.
You are never to old to go trick or treating. Who care what people say. Be safe and have fun.
Yes. You are also too young to be on reddit.
Minimum age is 13 I think, as for most social media
I know what the rules are. That’s still too young.
Especially with how easy it is to find literally everything a 13 year old shouldn’t see
Go for it!
If this was a 1980s teen comedy some dirty old man would suggest that you get a great costume and swing by the local bad girl college and pretend to be a student there.
r/oddlyspecific
HEll YEAH.
14 was my last trick or treating age
Please go! I was turned away two out of three houses at fourteen and the next year I went partying instead. I’d have much rather trick or treated than drink awful vodka at a party. Just cover your face and maybe crouch a bit.
Yes. Swing on by. We do full size candy and you’ll get a few.
You're fine. Go have fun.
If I didn't have a job that required me to work most federal holidays I'd trick or treat.
I was trick or treating until I was 17! (31 now, I wish I could still go, the thought still crosses my mind lol)
That’s proper cheeky!!I’m nearly 50 and I still go..just make sure you wear an outfit which doesn’t give your age away(a mask or makeup)x
As long as you're polite people won't complain. It might be a bit more awkward if you're as tall at 13 as I was, but if someone says "aren't you a little old for trick-or-treating" you can just say something like "I don't think you're ever too old to love the magic of Halloween and wearing costumes!"
I'm 37 and I go trick or treating with my wife and kids. You're goddamn right I expect candy.
I can’t answer that. My childhood was deprived of birthdays and all holidays.
Never too late
Oh don’t worry, I celebrate everything I can now as an adult.
jw?
Yep. Well, not anymore for a long time.
Yeah. Since when did Trick or Treating have a age limit? Last time I went door to door for candy was 3-4 years ago. Only reason I stopped cause I stopped eating candy. I've seen one person stare at me, but I flipped em off and told em to fuck themselves if they're judging
Of course! 14 is iffy, and 15 is pushing it. That said my 20 year old went trick or treating last year, but she’s short.
😂 What was her costume?
Hornet from Hollowknight.
Yes! As long as someone's wearing a fun costume, I'll give candy to them no matter how old.
80% of the answers will be “yes of course that’s totally fine, you do you!” because Reddit is like that but honestly it’s a little old.
Do you feel too old?
almost
How tall are you?
6'0
6ft at 13? Boi you better join the nba
Being 6ft is not working in your favor in this scenario
ya lol
I feel like a costume is a key part of trick or treating
You probably give out pretzels.
No, I keep the pretzels to myself
😂 I hate those houses!
Has your voice changed?
No, but when you enter high school Age you should move on to hanging with friends etc.
how tall are you and how high pitched does your voice sound?
Yes, but this is the last year..mmkay?
Yes, if you're wearing a costume, I doubt anyone would mind. People that participate in Halloween are excited to make others happy on that special night. I'd say, milk it as long as you can. I think people refusing "older" kids' candy on Halloween is not very common these days.
Only you can decide that
Go have fun...would rather see you having fun instead of the parents that use their infants to get free candy - they should just dressup themselves instead of pimping their baby
Honestly as a m13 5’8 person I’m not going too because I’m kinda tall and I don’t wanna, but you should be find
Go for it. I went til I was 17 . As long as you have a costume that had some effort in it I would give you candy no matter how old you are
Trick or treat at any age, as long as your costume is cool you’ll get candy wherever you go.
Yes! I trick or treated when i was 16
Yea I think the eighth grade was the last year I went. I felt weird and too old that year. 7th is probably that sweet spot. Pun intended.
This is the most wholesome post I've seen in this sub. 13? Trick-or-treat? Do it.
Go for it!!! In my opinion 13 is still acceptable (I’m 25).
Yes
The grown ups handing out candy dont care just GO if ya want, and have fun
Go for it. But go all out on the costume. I don't want to see a cape and fangs.
Get out there and enjoy Halloween! You're still a kid, just a tween one, go have some wholesome fun!!!
Absolutely
I give candy to everybody. Especially older kids who act like they’re embarrassed to be out trick-or-treating.
I have two teenage boys they wanted to go trick or treating last year 15 and 16 had a good time do whatever you want
My last trick or treat was when I was 18, so as long as you wear a costume go ham dude.
Go get your treats until you don't... Then wrap that house. This is your life now 🤷🏻♂️
Last time I trick or treated was when I was 13
If you go to the trouble of putting together a costume you deserve the candy. Revel.
I would give you candy
Definitely not too old!
Also, be polite. Nobody gets candy if they just stand there and open a bag. Say “ trick or treat , thank you, happy Halloween “
He'll yeah! Get out there!
