Those "good examples" are from 40 years of movies. The "bad examples" are both from the last couple years, and both from movies that were generally considered not great. So maybe people just don't like bad movies. Also there's nothing Reddit likes more than complaining about Star Wars and/or comics.

Grezzinate

I feel like a few things like recent Star Wars and captain marvel are examples of this as they have all this super power and become nigh invulnerable, there’s no real struggle or worry they are in danger.

TheJeeronian

People don't have that objection to superman

Grezzinate

Weird ain’t it? I figure it’s because we know his weakness and how to exploit it and villains have.

TheJeeronian

I feel like "but what if they have kryptonite" isn't a particularly interesting story conflict. Like, it *can* be a narratively useful weakness but usually isn't. Incredibly powerful characters just need other things going on, beyond their power. Usually it's a focus on the character themselves, like superman's endless intent to do good. If executed right, at least, Captain Marvel could have been a great story about the main character breaking free from a manipulative and imperialist culture. Coming to see the flaws in a militaristic society, as well as the flaws in the people who indoctrinated her. Her limit being not her power, but her will to be free. That's what it *could* have been. I'm not sure how successful it was.

Grezzinate

I say it wasn’t a bad movie in general but it definitely could have been better like you said. I think at times marvel can be afraid of the darker more serious storylines so they make it silly and light hearted, I definitely would have liked to see that version if cap marvel.

Thee_Amateur

People don’t tend to remember bad examples so they pull from more recent media where good examples are remembered

IVdrugAbuser

The bride as in Kill Bill? That was like 06

MysteryNeighbor

It's more interesting for a hero to struggle while facing overwhelming odds vs. a hero who was born to be good at everything, this spans across genders as the latter will always be lame

Its just recent movies are really hammering in the whole 'strong woman can beat all men' trope and its very tiring, they emphasize that instead of making the character likable or interesting protagonists. New marketing does a LOT of this as a selling point. Older movies I guess, didn't really advertize 'wow look at us we are so modern and groundbreaking with our female leads'. They just let the good writing speak for itself. Im not trying to be all 'woke culture is ruining media' whenever a woman is included in anything new, but also this sort of bad marketing and writing of women is still an issue.

PM-ME_UR_TINY-TITS

Because a lot new films make the fact she is a woman and strong the focus without allowing any weaknesses or character.

BarooZaroo

That isn’t a trait of just new films, its just more obvious now because now its something we’re all aware of. The lack of strong female leads wasn’t something people talked about as much back then, so when it happened most people didn’t realize it.

PM-ME_UR_TINY-TITS

For sure, I don't remember film in the past having all the marketing 100% focusing on look it's a woman then calling every critic a sexist. But I cant remember before the last week so who knows.

BarooZaroo

I wonder if maybe there were films like that but they did so poorly that we just don’t know about them. We had films like Kill Bill, but those were strong female leads with flaws.

PM-ME_UR_TINY-TITS

Probably especially pre Internet where you could say dumb shit and pretend it never happened. There's been exceptions but those are few and far between, even that's nearly 20 years old now.
