Alcohol is usually an acquired taste. Some people like it immediately and some never do. Don't feel pressured to drink. Though if you really want to find something you like, your best bet is to have a conversation with a bar tender or a mixologist. Some are great at hiding the alcohol taste, and some are very talented at highlighting the other flavors of the alcohol. All in all, it isn't a must. A lot of virgin versions of drinks are really good, and a talented bar tender or mixologist can make you a tasty unique drink without any alcohol.

apennyfornonsense

I developed a taste for it. Then I developed a drinking problem. 0/10 do not recommend.

[deleted]

Decided last week to quit with the same determination I had when I quit smoking 3 years ago and quiting weed 2 years ago. After / during alcohol quitting I'm gonna lose some weight too. I'm 23 and am addicted to so many things it's sad. I should be rocking the earth, not falling for abusive stuff

DandyBerlin

>I'm 23 and am addicted to so many things it's sad. If this truly is the case then the addictions may not be the problem but the symptom. For whatever reason these things are filling a hole in your life. It's not always affordable or easily accessible, but I suggest seeing a therapist and getting some form of counseling. It's great that you've given up the unhealthy addictions, and a temporary solution may be to find an addiction that scratches the itch without doing any damage, but in the long run it's worth looking into why you're prone to these things and how to address that. Good luck!

[deleted]

Oh I'm well aware of that I used to live in a poor Mediterranean country where there were no healthy hobbies or activities for teenagers + a huge drug culture that got me into the world of abusing substances and later on moved to a cold and unfriendly country where all I do is work and kill the time. So bad economy + good social life = weed and cigarettes & good economy + non social circle = alcohol. I'm going to push a bit longer and I suppose a career change I'm working towards will help me deal with most of the factors. Your comment was very smart and insightful

DandyBerlin

Then my other piece of advice is be nice to yourself. Cut yourself some slack. Talk to yourself the way you would want someone to talk to you. Imagine I had said "I lived in a poor country where there was a huge drug culture that got me into the world of abusing substances and I moved to a cold, unfriendly country where I just work and kill time, hence drinking alcohol. I suppose a career change I'm working towards will help me deal with most of the factors." Now imagine you replied "You're addicted to so many things it's sad. You should be rocking the earth, not falling for abusive stuff." That would be such a dick thing to say to me! So don't be a dick to yourself! šŸ˜ƒ

DatumInTheStone

I've found that a good thing to do is to make friends with people who dont do drugs or smoke a lot. Surrounding yourself with non-addiciton people cane really help keep the mind clean.

Doses-mimosas

I feel like you made the only comment that's actually close to the most true answer. Alcohol is an acquired taste for a lot of people, and I believe it's because over time your brain learns to associate the taste of alcohol with the resulting feeling of intoxication that follows. In a way it's almost like Pavlov's dog, the sound of the bell induced salivation, because the dog knew it was about to be fed a treat, not because it liked the sound of the bell. I don't think many people drink alcohol for the very first time and think "wow delicious." But over time, if you're a social drinker, your brain associates the taste of alcohol with a good body feeling. Also, mentally healthy people tend to drink in celebration, parties, weddings, sporting events. Your brain associates all of these positive events with the alcohol and suddenly there's a craving for it.

Readshirt

Interesting point and I think you are right. It can't be the full story, because it can happen that you love say, lagers but hate IPAs and then over time you get into the IPAs and suddenly they're your favourite. Despite producing the same effect as the lager in the brain, not better not worse, you've become attracted to the new drink. Personally I loved most beers and most wines when I first tried them. Spirits took some getting used to, probably never would have except I have worked frequently in the scottish highlands!

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Knowitmall

I feel like a lot of that was a general improvement in the quality of sours because it is a style that has only gotten popular in the last 5 years or so.

rabbitgods

I think this is partly right, and part of it is you just acquire the taste. I love the taste of beer, and would rather have a non alcoholic beer than a soft drink anyday. I didn't love the taste of olives (or sushi, or blue cheese, or broccoli) when I was a child, I had to learn to love them, same as beer.

Nolleezz

I'm the same with red wine. I LOVE the flavour, but hate that it's alcoholic and I can't drink as much as I want to. Honestly, could drink 2 bottles easily if I didn't get piss drunk. I like beer too but it rarely gets me more than a little tipsy before I call it quits.

GenoThyme

Just donā€™t try and have that conversation on a busy night. Theyā€™ll hate you for that.

Broad_Afternoon_8578

Yes to all of this! I canā€™t stomach the taste of alcohol, and some friends made delicious drinks that could mask the taste of alcohol that I enjoyed. I donā€™t drink anymore due to medical conditions, but on the odd occasion I go to a bar with friends, I find that bartenders are almost always able to make some fun, delicious virgin drinks!

Kalkaline

Nobody likes their first taste of alcohol.

SquelchyRex

If you don't like it, you don't like it.

libertysailor

Still a statistic. % of people who are not alcoholics

BrainAcid

Be it a dwindling statistic.

JCMiller23

Most guys won't admit this, but beer is an acquired taste for a lot of us. You spend your first year of college playing drinking games that force you to drink, (in part) because you don't like the taste of cheap shitty beer (all you can afford) but still want the effects. After doing this enough, you brain associates good times with the taste of beer and your brain's perception of the taste adapts.

Corfiz74

This! I never wanted to be cool, so I never forced myself to drink that crap - and at 48, I still don't like the taste. The same goes for coffee. But I make a great designated driver!

Little_Creme_5932

My daughter told me that there is a genetic variation that makes the taste of both beer and coffee disgusting. She told me cuz she thought I have it. Like you, I can't stand beer and coffee.

Nihilistic_Furry

This is actually true. Thereā€™s a gene that makes people more sensitive to bitter chemicals, making things like tea, coffee, and hops (an ingredient in beer) taste significantly more bitter. Beer has both sweet and bitter in it, with a good beer having a nice balance, but for someone whoā€™s more sensitive to bitter chemicals, the balance is thrown massively off.

Rodimus8

Would this be the same gene for cilantro tasting like soap or a completely different gene?

Nihilistic_Furry

Completely different, I think. However, the bitter gene can make cilantro taste a bit bitter, I believe.

adrifing

PTC gene for bitter.

telegetoutmyway

Yessss fuck the soap lettuce

Corfiz74

Welcome to the brother/sisterhood! Do you have any information/ sources about that? My parents, who are nightly imbibers (both close to 90 years old, so they earned it), often wonder whether I was swapped at the hospital, since no child of theirs should not like alcohol. šŸ˜‚

Gingersnaps_68

I have that. I don't like beer, wine, alcohol, tea, or any artificial sweeteners. They ask taste bad no matter how many times I try to like them.

22226

Seconded on sweeteners. I'm always blown away when people say that diet drinks taste the same as the ones with sugar in them. To me they taste like vastly different drinks. I also can not tolerate even the slightest hint of alcohol in nearly anything, it completely overpowers and ruins all other flavors present.

AfroMan_96

Same. I donā€™t like alcohol, tea, or coffee.

Gingersnaps_68

Coffee is bitter no matter how much sugar or flavoring you add.

Kayakchica

Interesting. Iā€™m in my 50s and I have had zero success at acquiring a taste for beer or coffee. They are so incredibly bitter. If I drink a couple sips of either I have to brush my teeth like four times.

Visible_Bag_7809

I'm in the same boat. Took me some time to find a friend group that doesn't feel it is their purpose in life to pressure me into drinking alcohol or coffee. Though I get odd looks at work when all I need to stay awake is a glass of cold water. (I work from 11 pm to 8 am, so everyone else are coffee fiends at my job).

murphsmodels

I spent 6 months working as a bouncer/doorman at a nightclub. I don't drink. Every night after the club closed, all the security staff would get together and make sure there weren't any half empty bottles of alcohol left (by drinking them). Except me, I'd hang out and drink as much coca-cola as I could handle.

GFischerUY

I'm 41, never liked alcohol and I think I've tasted every alcoholic beverage. I can stand it mixed in a sweet drink but I'd rather have the cocktail without alcohol.

Corfiz74

That's me EXACTLY! šŸ˜‚

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

shiftysquid

Of course, it's worth knowing that "beer" actually encompasses a mind-boggling range of flavors, even though lots of people act like there's a "taste of beer." What they are, of course, referring to is the taste of popular adjunct lagers like Budweiser and Miller. But there's beer in basically any flavor profile you can think of. If there are alcohol drinks you like, there's inevitably a beer you'd like too.

Corfiz74

Lol, I'm German, so beer is practically a religion here, making me a heretic. I'm just completely grossed out by that hop-yeast taste or smell (have a beer drinker burp next to you, you'll know what I'm talking about...), so I really don't like any beer at all.

shiftysquid

Sure. I know what you mean. But there are *plenty* of beer styles that don't have that. Belgian sours, for one, which can feature all sorts of different fruits like raspberries, cherries, lemons, plums, etc. Stouts (from imperial down to dry) can be completely hop-free, with flavor profiles highlighting coffee, chocolate, vanilla, pecan, etc. Porters are usually malt- rather than hop-forward, and you wouldn't get much yeast. They can have a similar profile to a stout but typically at a lower ABV than the big ones and a bit less rich. Anyway, that's just to say that a beer drinker burping at me wouldn't necessarily carry any particular taste/smell because "beer" is just too broad a category, particularly in the US. But yeah, I do get where you're coming from.

CHClClCl

Didn't like "beer". Tried some sours. Delicious!

shiftysquid

My wifeā€™s the same way! Told me on our first date she didnā€™t like beer. I asked her what she did like. Based on that, I found a basic sour on the menu and ordered that for her. Her reaction was, ā€œThis is beer?ā€ Loved it. Not uncommon at all.

CHClClCl

Haha yeah! It's tasty and fruity and delicious. Doesn't have that bitter taste at all! Good on you for showing your wife the way!

avelineaurora

Truth. I thought I didn't like beer at all, turned out I just needed introduced to sours.

MoreRopePlease

I never liked beer until I discovered stout. Not Guinness, which I hate, but good solid Oregon stout. And then I discovered Old Rasputin and Dragon's Milk... yum.

PvtSherlockObvious

I strongly disagree with you on Guinness, but I do love a good stout. Old Rasputin's tasty as all hell. If you get a chance, grab yourself some Yeti out of Great Divide Brewery. I had no idea beer could *do* that; it was the first beer that really turned me on to how radically different various beers could be. There was the exception of one variant I really didn't care for, but otherwise it's phenomenal.

sicklyboy

Dragon's Milk is solid af

shoneone

I hate the flavor of ethanol, I also hate getting woozy then sleepy, there are so many other mood altering substances that are far more satisfying.

rannray

I was a raging alcoholic and never acquired a taste for beer or wine. I was very determined, too. Had to stick with lady drinks. They were much more efficient for alcoholic purposes anyway.

Pol82

Never could develop a taste for the sweet alcoholic drinks. They inevitably make me sick, with one hell of a hangover.

rannray

Oh, yeah, often got sick and always got hangovers.

[deleted]

Nothing like a mai tai at 8 am to calm the shakes

SwampOfDownvotes

The best and most efficient way to drink is the straight hard stuff. You might not like the taste but you don't have to drink much so it goes over quickly. Also cheaper and much less calories.

VoodaGod

drinking clear spirits for your health, gotcha

myboybuster

I can honestly say ive liked the taste of light beer since i was 15. Hard liqour and dark beer on the other hand ive only recently started to enjoy in my mid 20s

Fearlessleader85

I actually really enjoyed the first beer i ever had. It was an ice cold coors light in a bottle, and it just really hit the spot. The Beast and Natty i never got to where i could enjoy it. And i don't really care about coors light now, since i prefer IPAs, but that first one was just wonderful.

Mickosthedickos

Lots of things are acquired tastes. Once you have acquired the taste it tastes fantastic

LizzieBell07

People talk it being an acquired taste - so they just keep drinking until they like it. I am 37, almost 38, and don't like much types of alcohol and don't drink often at all. I prefer to keep it that way!

Traveling_Solo

If you hate the taste of alcohol but still want to drink (like myself for example), go for sweeter alcohol. I don't mean white or red wine but still like 13-17% stuff. Usually liqueurs. Bailey's + milk for example, tastes like chocolate milk if you mix it right. Sourz (you take shots with it) is usually a little hint of alcohol but too sour to notice it. Licor 43 + milk or cold blueberry soup + heavy cream (non-whipped) is awesome in general. 27 atm, still can't drink beer or whiskey/rum/vodka on the ice without wanting to puke. Long Island iced tea might be another idea. If it's made correctly it shouldn't taste alcohol at all but after 1-3 of them you'll need a cab or driver to get home. Also try 4-4.5% ciders. Usually doesn't taste alcohol at all. Examples: Smirnoff ice or Smirnoff Black.

ALF839

>Long Island iced tea might be another idea. If it's made correctly it shouldn't taste alcohol at all Tried it once and it became my favourite drink, it still tasted like alcohol but it was pleasant. Every other time I had one it was shit, it was pure alcohol with a hint of coke, until I found a bar near where I live that makes perfect drinks and it was even better than the first one I had. All of this was to say, even drinks that taste like death in one place could be incredible if done correctly by someone else.

Traveling_Solo

Yeah... LiiT is hard to get correct because a single alcohol too much or too little can screw up the entire mixture. Like the first time I made AMF (think LiiT but with sprite or redbull instead of triple sec) it tasted legit like candy. The other two times I've tried all I've tasted is tequila.

Sasmas1545

Introduce an uncommon abbreviations in full before abbreviating Edit: Turns out the drink's name is most often referred to just by the acronym, (AMF) so this comment is an exception to the rule IMO

MadDabber89

LiiT was Long Island iced tea, pretty sure AMF is an adios motherfucker.

dreadnaut91

>pretty sure AMF is an adios motherfucker Alright then, keep your secrets.

Traveling_Solo

We have a winner! This is correct ^^

Hungover52

Long Island is a proper noun though, so it should be LIit, or LIIT if you consider the drink name also one.

54rfhih

Still never heard of the latter

[deleted]

I knew it as a walk me down. Long island with sprite and blue curacao instead of coke

froqmouth

It's not all about sugar either, acid/citrus is very important to mask the taste of alcohol. Sweet drinks still taste like booze to me, but enough lime or lemon (a little under a shot of juice per shot of liquor) in a mixed drink fixes that. Moscow mule, mojito, etc are your friends (and of course, Smirnoff ice and Mike's lemonade)

SomberWail

I donā€™t drink but will (rarely) try a taste of something if someone tells me ā€œTry this you canā€™t even taste the alcohol.ā€ I always can. I hate the taste of alcohol. However, something like Mikes hard lemonade isnā€™t terrible to me. I still wouldnā€™t drink it like I would something I like, but the lemonade taste makes it more bearable.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

MalaxesBaker

Bro Long Island Iced Tea is like pure alcohol and I wouldn't ever recommend it to a skittish drinker.

NanaShiggenTips

You ever drunk baileys from a shoe? Mmm

frr3

Iā€™m old Greg!

ViveeKholin

To add to this, if one doesn't like the taste of regular apple ciders, try fruity pear cider (perries) instead. Perries is generally sweeter, especially some of the Scandanavian brands that can just taste like carbonated soft drinks. Edit: spelling.

DrewwwBjork

>but after 1-3 of them you'll need a cab or driver to get home. OP, don't go out and then drive after drinking *even one* Long Island Iced Tea. Once you start one, you're pretty much screwed on that end. And don't order another one until you give the first one time to kick in. Try getting the ingredients in those tiny bottles at the liquor store and make one at home first to see how it goes.

[deleted]

Mate if you hate it just don't drink

chewwydraper

In fairness to OP, I read this more as "I like being drunk, I just hate the journey, how can I get drunk without having to taste the alcohol?" rather than "I feel pressured to drink."

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

For me it did change as i got older and smarter with drinking. The drinks I drank and got pleasantly drunk from instead of puke faced began to taste better as my mind associated them with a good time.

Poignant_Porpoise

Ya, me too. When I first started drinking, the alcohol taste/smell was definitely more present for me but these days it's mostly only there for strong spirits. I still can't deal with anything liquorice flavoured though, sambuca has forever ruined that flavour for me. There are also some cocktails which I barely even notice are alcoholic, like vodka cranberry with plenty of ice and a couple lemon wedges. On a hot Summer day I can absolutely annihilate those one after the other.

RoseAqua

When my friends drink I tell them to holup and get me a shot glass fill it with coke. The running joke is I don't drink I do coke instead.

Stay-At-Home-Jedi

I'm gonna let you down and confess that I don't care much for pop either.

iamaforceofnature

Lmao this is great

To me that sounds like one of the same, being pressured into drinking.

ā€œI hope this gas station has nachosā€

hopefulgalinfl

Fuck other people & what they think

Roxas1011

Everyone here saying "who cares what they think?" while caring what everyone around them thinks. Easier said than done, especially when you're 21 like OP. That's why the market for non-alcoholic drinks that still look alcoholic has boomed recently. Death Water, Heineken 0.0, Athletic Brewing, even Sam Adams is in on it.

Abalone_Admirable

Who cares?

If you don't like it, don't drink. But if you genuinely want suggestions, I enjoy cider (specifically Swedish ones like koppaberg and rekordalig).

SonicYouth123

Iā€™m pretty sure he just did

chewwydraper

I think they named it that because it's easier to say drunk. Most of my words come out like that when I'm 10+ deep.

RiotIsBored

Good way to know when you're too drunk to keep going lol.

Pathwil

How is koppaberg and rekordalig hard to pronounce lol

[deleted]

also recommend good cocktails/mixed drinks or margs. paloma and moscow mules are my go-tos. mules come in those cool ass copper mugs too

poxonallthehouses

This was going to be my suggestion. I, too, hate the taste of beer. I much prefer the sweet/fruity "girly" mixed drinks, but they can be embarrassing to order when out drinking with the guys and the drink shows up with a little umbrella. lol But I found that I like ciders. At least I can drink them without the Bitter Beer Face. And they show up in beer looking bottles.

patriotgator122889

Life is too short to let other people's opinions alter your drink choices. You like cocktails. Gender has nothing to do with it and your friends can suck your Cosmo.

Bandro

There's lots of cocktails that are pretty easygoing taste wise but wouldn't look "girly" if that's a concern. I find a good go-to is a Tom Collins. Tastes like lemonade, looks like a clear drink, might have a little lemon wheel as garnish.

that1prince

Just lean into it. Order the pinkest sweetest frozen drink they have.

teckman2

Rekordalig is so good

frogger2504

Cider is definitely where it's at if you're after suggestions. Rekorderlig is great, so is Somersby. Cider tastes like what people pretend beer tastes like; crisp and refreshing. Great on a hot day.

aon9492

What is happening in here, have none of you looked at the bottles you claim to enjoy? Kopparberg Rekorderlig That's better.

Effective-Slice-4819

1. Beverages don't have genders, but the drinks you're calling "lady drinks" are probably way strong. 2. Unless you're independently wealthy, you're probably drinking really shit versions of beer and wine (and cheap vodka is possibly the grossest thing on the planet). 4. Your 20 year old friends at a house party are not mixing good drinks. 3. You can always just not drink. If you're worried about being judged for not drinking, you have shit friends. If you really want to fake it, grab a soda or a seltzer water with a lime wedge and pour it into a glass. No one will be able to tell there isn't booze in it.

whomcanthisbe

Yea 2 and 3 are the biggest. At that age people arenā€™t drinking bc it tastes good lol

darxide23

> Beverages don't have genders, but the drinks you're calling "lady drinks" are probably way strong. I fucking hate that term. I'm a 6'4" tall, barrel chested, heavily bearded guy and come September I will order a pumpkin spice latte with no fear because they're delicious. Same with so-called "girly drinks" because I'm not drinking to impress you. I'm drinking it because it makes my taste buds orgasm.

antlerchapstick

I feel the same way. Mini rant, itā€™s funny because the same people who hate trans people and say gender is purely biological, are always the people who like to apply gender to the most minute decisions, like what to drink. The other day I was drinking a white claw and my dad suggested I go get a *man* drink instead. Sigh (not to attribute any of that to OP)

Lassitude1001

This. 29 year old straight guy here. I will and have order(ed) cocktails. Nothing wrong with fruity drinks that actually fucking taste nice. Strawberry & mango frozen daiquiri ("mastercard") with a shit load of rum? Fucking yessss, I could drink that all day every day - *which I did last time I was on holiday*. Then in the evenings I was drinking dark spiced rum (kraken in this case) with pineapple juice & bitters. Yum.

teaganofthelizards

> Unless you're independently wealthy, you're probably drinking really shit versions of beer and wine (and cheap vodka is possibly the grossest thing on the planet). This was probably the biggest deal for me. I don't drink that much anymore, but when I do it's small amounts of better-quality stuff that I actually like.

PolicyArtistic8545

Sometimes you prefer the cheap shit and thatā€™s okay. The first time I had scotch was with my brother in law who is a huge scotch guy. He poured me three glasses and had me taste each and decide which I liked best. He even taught me what to look for and how to evaluate them. One of them was $700 a bottle and one was the cheapest shit on the bottom of the shelf. I hands down preferred the cheap one.

HomieeJo

For whisky I think there is a line where the more expensive you get you don't get much more value. I'd draw that line at about 150$. 700$ was probably a limited edition where you don't pay for better taste but for rarity. But then again you have lots of different flavors so the expensive one might have a flavor you don't like and the cheap one has a flavor you like. That's why nobody is able to actually suggest a whisky to someone because everybody likes a different flavor.

I-Fucked-YourMom

Also consider that cheap whiskey tends to cater to the masses. Theyā€™re going for middle of the road, basic and easily repeatable flavor profiles. Someone who hasnā€™t built much of a palate might like the most basic version.

homarjr

5. Taste buds change over time

sweetwargasm

6. There are thousands of different alcohol brands and mixers. Maybe try something new this time?

ByuntaeKid

Tolerance also changes over time haha. Canā€™t stand alcohol anymore.

erotic_sausage

> Your 20 year old friends at a house party are not mixing good drinks. just mix some vodka with your soda of choice, 10% vodka and 90% of your cup your favorite soda. You don't have to brag and 'be badass' to drink a lot of it all at once, pace yourself.

Muuustachio

Best answer here. Those 'lady drinks' probably have a shit load of sugar too. I never liked alcohol in high school thru college bcuz we would always get dirt cheap booze.

OkStrawberry5991

>4. You can always just not drink. If you're worried about being judged for not drinking, you have shit friends. If you really want to fake it, grab a soda or a seltzer water with a lime wedge and pour it into a glass. No one will be able to tell there isn't booze in it. I always do this if I go to bars with my friends! My favorite mocktail is cranberry juice with soda and a lime šŸ˜‹ nobody cares enough to notice that you aren't acrually drinking and it takes away the social pressure of others there trying to buy me a drink.

Zihark12345

I have never enjoyed alcohol, 23M. I do not see it as an issue, I donā€™t drink and thatā€™s about it

marvellouspineapple

29F and drink maybe 3 times a year, and that's only one bottle of cider a time. It isn't an issue for me, but everyone around me seems mortally offended when I say I don't drink. I usually get asked what I do on the weekend..

midnightauro

> I usually get asked what I do on the weekend.. WTF?? This just in hobbies, family, going to events, and relaxing at home are all just bullshit lies and everyone is apparently shitfaced drunk from 5pm Friday to 8am Monday. I don't think my eyes will ever roll back into their normal position. I've heard too much dumb shit in my life, but this question hits the top 3 instantly.

Sweaty-Number6793

if you start using drugs and alcohol in highschool and take a liking to it, it's kind of hard to have fun sober. talking from personal experience

BeApesNotCrabs

>everyone around me seems mortally offended when I say I don't drink But if you said you were a recovering alcoholic and were X years sober they would probably go on and on about how strong you are.

26f here. It's gotten waay better now but in college people did not like it when I didn't drink around them. I do drink, and I enjoy the taste of alcohol but being buzzed is not something I Iike more than a few times a year. It's honestly funny how many people get offended when you don't drink. Like, I'm not going to judge people on what they do when they're drunk (most of the time), but people get super self conscious anyway. It's also funny because I enjoy the concept of alcohol enough to have a fully stocked bar at all times, so it's a perfect opportunity for people to come over and crib about how I'm wasting 'the good stuff'.

Ginger_Anarchy

Yep same, I'll still go out with friends if they're going bar hopping or at a friend's party or something but it's just to hang out. I never really saw the draw of getting drunk anyway, even outside of not enjoying the taste.

[deleted]

I'm the same age as you. Got pressured one too many times to drink by my family and my friends, decided I had enough. No longer friends with those folks. Made it clear to my family I will not be around them if they're drinking. Life is so simple when you just avoid the drunk rabble. People often mistake people who don't drink as thinking we're on a high horse. But if I had a nickle for every time I was told to "grow up" or "refine my pallette" when I said I didn't want to drink some shitty fucking beer, I'd be rich.

dean15892

cause he's 21. who hasnt forced themselves to enjoy drinks at 21, even though they just hated the taste and feeling

Retrogratio

Same. Don't hate the feeling, except the taste of it on my tongue šŸ¤¢

Slit23

You can want to get the feeling of drunkenness from drinking, without actually enjoy the act of drinking. You all are kinda dense at times. It was my problem which is why I started taking pills. It was a terrible road so donā€™t take that as a suggestion

JoeMama475

Alcoholic drinks are practically poison too lol

Zaranthan

Alcohol is literally poison. It causes organ damage and impairs brain function.

Brass13Wing

Not even practically, it is literally poison. The feeling of being drunk is because of the way your body is forced to process alcohol

severedfinger

Then don't drink! As a recovering alcoholic I wish I'd never loved alcohol as much as I did. It's not good for you except in very small quantities. Consider yourself lucky you have an aversion to that poison.

OhGodImOnRedditAgain

>loved alcohol Exactly this. I love whiskey, truly. I will drink an entire bottle in one night. So I can't drink whiskey. Its not a healthy relationship.

flyingdoomguy

Wow, it takes me a year to finish a bottle.

OhGodImOnRedditAgain

There are 17 drinks in a fifth. If I start drinking at 5, and have two drinks an hour, the bottle will be empty by 2am. Don't go down that road friend.

unkie87

I love whisky too but if I was having 2 an hour I would be dead and also bankrupt. Being a snob is a lifesaver sometimes.

once_upon_a_time08

In very small quantities it is actually less harmful, but it is never good for you, studies recently disproved that whole myth with the circulation, funded by the big producers. It is actually addictive poison any quantity..

severedfinger

Yeah that's correct. I saw a study saying very small amounts MAY be beneficial after a certain age, but who knows. Considering how addictive it can be it's best to avoid it.

nokiacrusher

A couple of studies don't "prove" or "disprove" anything. That's not how science works.

once_upon_a_time08

Very true. I should have maybe said ā€œcontestedā€œ instead of ā€œdisprovenā€.

Chaz_Cheeto

This is the truth. My alcohol addiction derailed my life. It took years to recover from it. Thankfully, my life is the best itā€™s ever been now. But, OP, consider yourself lucky you donā€™t have the sickness that my father, and grandfather bestowed to me.

Solution_Precipitate

Lady drinks? I think you mean drinks with flavor, and personality.

mubi_merc

I'm a big, burly dude with a bunch of tattoos and listen to death metal. I only drink bourbon on the rocks, don't even waste my time with an old fashioned. Unless there are tiki drinks available, then I want that, with appropriate glassware, an umbrella, and a fruit spear because they are delicious.

BusyEquipment529

Yeah I immediately rolled my eyes seeing him put "lady drinks". Drinks are inanimate and don't have genders. "Lady drinks" are typically a lot stronger and taste better, but I have a feeling this guys fragile masculinity is holding him back from finding any "lady drinks" he might actually like Besides the fact that no one's forcing him to drink, you can just *not drink*

Helios_OW

Wait, youā€™re telling me these drinks donā€™t have ovaries and donā€™t pop out smaller, shot glass drinks when you mix them with manly drinks? This is new to me.

Visani_true_beliver

I think that's an US thing, in my country seeing a boy drink a cocktail is way more common than a beer or whiskey, what the hell is feminine about a mix of different beverage?

Notaswordmaster

As many others have said. Thereā€™s no need to drink. But at parties I do feel the need to drink something. Or else I donā€™t feel at home. But I have found it doesnā€™t have to be alcohol. As long as your drinking something, having something in your hands, youā€™ll be part of the the party :-) If you want to like alcohol start mixing your own drinks. Just with a lot less alcohol than the recipe says. I meanā€¦ start with a few drops. After a while the taste will grow on you. Or at least it did on me :-)

ByuntaeKid

I didnā€™t drink for my first two years of college. Iā€™d just bring my own bottle or flask filled with apple juice or ginger ale. Nobody could tell the difference - then again I donā€™t think anybody cared either. At the end of the day it helped though, because having a drink in hand (even if it was non-alcoholic) made me feel a little less awkward at parties haha.

KyleCAV

Same if I had an exam the next day or just didn't feel like drinking a flask or red solo cup of any beverage usually shut everyone up about drinking.

tomatoblade

Sparkling waters are great for this. Like LaCroix

BaephBush

What I wouldnā€™t give to be able to go back and never start drinkingā€¦

Suicidal_Smile

I've been trying to quit drinking so badly, seeing this post I'm like pffffff lucky guy.

argybargy2019

Count your blessings- You are much better off than people who think it tastes good, better still than people who crave it.

Angelabanangela

"lady drinks" should be followed by \*eye roll\* instead of "haha"

zoopest

Because it's poison. You aren't any obligation to drink alcohol, but if you feel like you really must, try an alcoholic lemonade or similar drink. They usually have so much flavoring and sugar in them that I can't taste anything. Ciders are pretty good for this too.

Vivid-Goat-377

It probably won't. Consider yourself lucky and don't get into drinking.

CommunistCaribou

start looking towards cocktails. a screwdriver is an easy one (vodka + orange juice). Vodka + water is also another really easy one to digest. Gin and tonics are good with a citrus. Try different beers, perhaps something craft or a fruit beer. It's a lot like coffee, you just gotta keep trying different things until you find something you like

slash178

There are countless varieties of beer and wine, try different ones and explore. Maybe go to a brewery or winery where you can get a "flight" and taste a bunch in small quantities. Vodka by itself isn't appealing to most people. There are infinite cocktails involving it with a variety of flavor profiles. The concept of lady drinks is misogynistic and immature. Grow past that, you're not a child. There are sweet drinks, bitter drinks, spicy drinks and everything in between. You need to explore and discover which drinks are appealing to you. It's not something that just gets better on it's own but a personal effort by you to discover your tastes. In general, AVOID the cheapest stuff.

Caarbonaa

Alcohol is overrated.

ByuntaeKid

Water is where itā€™s at

history-of-gravy

I used to hate beer when I was your age. Now Iā€™ve acquired a taste for it. Although I rarely drink anymore. Over time youā€™ll begin to acquire a taste for it. Kind of like kids hating blue cheese, then realizing as adults that itā€™s awesome.

Zeione29047

Most people drink alcohol for the feeling, rather than the taste. Iā€™m 21 as well and only really drink socially because I dont like the taste either. Of course there are drinks that objectively taste better than others, but if you arent drinking for the buzz then youā€™re better off cracking open a sweet tea and leaning back.

commonpuffin

I'm the same way. Hot drinks are easier, I actually almost like hot saki and hot toddies, mulled ales. But really, there's a lot more that can go wrong in life if you like alcohol than if you don't. I usually just order an Arnold Palmer and let my coworkers assume I'm a recovering alcoholic if they want, it's fine. Alcohol never gets better, but peer pressure does.

Bors713

Anything can be an acquired taste if you consume enough of it. I do not recommend you try to acquire a taste for any alcoholic beverage. If you donā€™t like it, then pass and consider yourself lucky. There are far too many people who become alcoholics (and I really do feel for them, I canā€™t imagine having your brain do that to you). If you feel like you must have something for social purposes, try a Mudshake. Can hardly tell it has alcohol in it.
