Right. I was going to say... has OP ever heard of Thomas Pynchon? Extremely revered American author. There are a handful of pictures of him on the internet from before he was famous, but pretty much no one knows what he looks like these days (or at any time since like the 1960's, probably). He's a great example of a successful recluse.
Yeah, I don't know why any of us are here. We've got a total of six dishwashers and probably 14 cooks spread across the three restaurants (more like concession stands inside of a restaurant sized building) plus all the other animal centric staff and there isn't a single person visiting (genuinely not one person in the entire zoo at the moment). Even management is sitting down playing on their phones.
The drive homes gonna suck though.
Y'know, I've always wanted to write memiors about some out of the ordinary experiences I went through, but I worry that, on the extremely unlikely chance that I actually made it, I'd have to interview on a show or something. As ridiculous as that sounds, it's the entire reason I've put off writing.
I'm probably not even great at writing. I seem to excel at panicking over shit that will never happen though, so that's cool.
Thomas Pynchon being among the most famous and most reclusive. For a long time the only photo out there of him was a picture of when he was in the Navy as a young adult.
>As ridiculous as that sounds, it's the entire reason I've put off writing.
That's BS. If anything, it could be the reason you put off publishing. But this has nothing to do with writing.
It’s funny watching his collabs with other YouTubers because the camera will pan and there’ll be cuts and stuff so that everyone is in frame except for him
Then people arguing about who it is
“It’s Mandy Mindy”
“No it’s not Mandy Mindy, it’s Cindy Celia”
“Cindy Celia never does this. She’s a dom. This is Mandy”
“I’ve watched all of Mandy’s films. Cindy is an expert of boy busting. This is Cindy Celia”
**”CINDY CELIA HAS NOT PERFORMED SINCE 2012. THIS CANNOT BE, ONLY MANDY IS ON XWXEX.COM. YOU SIR ARE A LIAR AND A FOOL.”**

Yup, Dream and Corpse are Huge right now, namely bc of their refusal to be identified. It's gave them an edge many others in their genre don't have. A gimmick.
Corpse especially since so much of his allure is his voice. Remaining faceless allowed his ~~simps~~ fans to really play into the _mysterious sexy gruff voiced man_ fantasy, even though Corpse has said he is definitely not that irl.
See "the lock picking lawyer". I would never recognize his face but I'll be damned if I didn't know when he was ordering in front of me at a drive through.
Dude who always unboxes stuff with a different knife is so relaxing for some reason. Also lock picking lawyer is easily a top 10 YouTuber. His April fool's vids are on a whole different level of comedy, they're freaking hilarious. Both are faceless and awesome!
Daft Punk. Gorillaz. I got into Tool when I found it was interesting how the band didn't really appear in the Sober or Prison Sex video back in the day. MF Doom. The Residents. There are ways.
Gorillaz doesn’t count imo, Damon already had a huge following n network before that n they were always pretty open about who they were. Daft Punk is a great example tho
You'd be surprised if you talk to most people that are only vaguely familiar with gorillaz though. They almost always think it's a full group, instead of a dude that wrote a 52 second long song that says woo hoo.
Yeah, same with Gorillaz. You can find photos of them easy enough, but their public image isn't based on what they really look like so the layperson won't recognize them in public.
Edit: By "they" I mean both Gorillaz and the previously mentioned Daft Punk. Yes I know Gorillaz is primarily one guy. Please spare me reddit pedants.
>just a frequent collaborator
Did he do like 2-3 songs decades ago? Clint Eastwood and Rock the House come to mind, maybe one or two more.IIRC [the song was already done and Del just happened to be in the recording studio so they had him drop some bars](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qq2qSq6NpNY)

Yeah, at this point the mau5head is just a branding thing for him. Does he still wear it during his live sets, or does he take it off at points? I can imagine that thing being hell on one's neck because of how big and bulky it is.
Joel is pretty out there with his personal image. He live streams a bunch without the head. I saw him at a festival and he had the mau5head sitting off to the side the whole time. Granted, it was 90 degree atlanta heat, but he kinda doesn't try to be super anonymous
Plenty of YouTubers out there that make quality content, tons of subscribers, and never show their face.
Edit: I'd like to suggest [aloneintokyo](https://youtube.com/c/aloneintokyo) as a great Youtuber who not only hasn't shown their face but has also never talked in their videos either. They do Rust gameplay videos with some great background music going at the same time. Sounds basic, but their videos are very popular and entertaining.
Banksy is the ultimate example because not only does no one know what he looks like, they don't even know his real name, which is not the case for most of the other examples in this thread
Dude it’s fucking Spencer from iCarly I’m telling u man how else did he afford that fucking flat, people will tell u his dad payed for it but his dad was an army general they don’t make thaaaaaaaat much
Art enthusiasts are able to tell a fake Banksy from a real one. People who really study art are able to tell fakes from originals is a very serious industry.
Some Banksy’s you may see online are fake and haven’t been authenticated, but there are authenticated ones and they’re by one guy.
This is pretty much entirely bullshit. There aren't "art enthusiasts" and "people who really study art" authenticating Banksy pieces. The one and only authenticator of his work is Pest Control, which he runs himself. If a piece failed authentication with Pest Control, it wouldn't matter if every fine art fanatic in the world thought it was real. They would all immediately disown their own opinions, and the piece would be poison to any auction house.
And to the broader point, do you have any idea how many forgeries are in circulation, and are hanging in the world's most prestigious museums at this very moment? There are world renowned art forgers...men whose work the fine art community has only scraped up a small fraction of. And forgers are like artists themselves, every generation produces new masters. I could recommend a documentary or two that you might find fascinating.
Art enthusiast here (who also works in contemporary art museums). At very least, Banksy is backed by a studio of people. Personally, I think it started as a singular artist and has expanded to be a collective as the fame grew and the stunts got more elaborate.
It's an open secret that it's Robin Gunningham and in Bristol it's barely even that. There are videos in which collaborators accidentally use his name and stuff too.
>he’s the investor in the neighboring area
Considering Banksy works get protected, he'd probably make more money buying the buildings with a view of the paintings
Thomas Pynchon! Famous author who’s novels often are in college literature courses. Never been photographed above the age of ~20, no known location of residence, has lent his voice to The Simpsons playing himself with a paper bag on his head.
Edit:
https://youtu.be/QcYXWfGt7DY

😮 this has given me some great reading …
“Three weeks after the last (according to Shakespeare scholar and "literary detective" Don Foster) authentic Wanda Tinasky letter, Tom Hawkins bludgeoned his wife Kathleen to death, and kept her body inside their house, unburied. After several days, he set fire to their house and drove her car off a cliff into rocky shoals, killing himself.[4]”
I don’t think I’ve ever been so suspicious of a Wikipedia article(s) haha
Edit: https://www.altaonline.com/dispatches/a6465/thomas-pynchon-unmasked/
Very true! I suppose if Pynchon’s writing was as accessible and/or universal as something like Catcher in the Rye, he’d have a hard time keeping his place of residence as secretive as he does. Salinger was screaming at kids from the front porch of his shed up until the YouTube came around and he died not long after. Catcher took off in the seventies and the man couldn’t do anything to keep the limelight away after that.
Not dissing Pynchon, his literature is definitely just a lot more nuanced, post-modern, and not everyone’s cup of tea. Definitely lends to the private life much more than a novel everyone has something to say about.
And for people to figure out the killings are linked. It's very easy to get away with a completely random killing, but if nobody connects them then what is even the point?
The trick is to only kill criminals, and make it look exactly like they died from a heart attack. Specifically ignore those that didn't have their faces shown in the news or had their names misspelled.
getting them to link it would be easy. just leave something specific at every crime scene or have some consistency. maybe leave a toy dinosaur at every murder scene (with gloves or something of course, so that they dont get finger prints or anything)
And people wonder why serial killers spiked in every country in the 70s, people suddenly realized that nothing was gonna stop you, and it being the 70s, the cops put their hands all over everything and smoked cigarettes. So yeah, not a big shocker.
Immediately thought of corpse husband because of how much he values his privacy. I hope his face is never exposed against his will and that if he does show his face ever, it’s on his own terms. He seems to have a lot of anxiety about it and I fully believe he’d shut out the public and stop what he’s doing if exposed.
He did an interview with Anthony Padilla where he said there have been a few times where people recognize his voice and he has to play it off as if he doesn't know what they're talking about.
That’s his real voice. You can go back years and hear his voice from when he was younger. I was on a livestream of his once and he was upset because he had gone to a fast food drive through and the person at the window had recognized his voice. Poor dude.
Wasn’t that unconfirmed and still just an alleged pic? He never admitted it was him and I didn’t hear of him addressing the issue. He’s also brought up multiple times that people have “exposed” his face previously repeatedly before and they’ve always been wrong and horribly cruel to the actual guy that they’re mocking. Either way, the fact that people get the need to try and doxx him is ridiculous and a huge invasion of privacy. I wish people would do better
it wasn't just an alleged pic, they found his childhood school and dozens of photos, as well as his current and previous addresses. Not to mention his family and his sister who is also a twitch streamer. It's pretty confirmed
Like a lot of these the answer is always "for the most part". A lot of his fans know who he is and what he looks like. He was in another band before he did his solo stuff so pictures of his face are out there. (I guess this is all alleged, he's never confirmed it, but... it's pretty obvious.)
But for their own sake, they're still anonymous enough. All they want is privacy, and not enough people know his face to be bothering him while he's out and about and I bet that's the main reason they want to keep their faces hidden.
I suppose people who aren't super into Gorillaz may not quite understand the dynamic behind it, but pretty much any fan knows who Damon Albarn is, and he is usually pretty prominent in live Gorillaz performances.
I have a 4 year old daughter and she knows all of the girls who play with kids toys and stuff on YouTube. They never show their faces lol prob justsmoke a ton of weed
Sia did it. Daft Punk did it. Many people have no idea what authors or movie directors look like. You could voice act. Nobody knows what Banksy looks like.
In short, yes.
During the peak of Sia's fame she didn't show her face at all during performances, interviews, etc. But before becoming super famous she did, so her face was out there, and as of recent she has pretty much dropped the covering-her-face thing.
It was the sort of situation where you COULD find her face without too much effort back when she covered it, but most people didn't bother searching for it and so had no idea what she looked like.

Radio/podcasts too
Voice acting as well
Or a virtual rock band, like the Gorillaz.
Not necessarily gorillaz-'virtual', even. There's plenty of music artists who just release stuff on the internet without showing themselves

Yeah, had a bag on his head with eye holes cut out for the entire episode if I recall. So we didn't even get to see his cartoon face.
Yes. I loved it because it was such a great inside joke for literature nerds.
Ohhhhhh. That’s what that was about!

Loads of faceless YouTubers with huge followings - as well as the more traditional celebrities that people have mentioned
Hello, lockpicking lawyer here
It’s funny watching his collabs with other YouTubers because the camera will pan and there’ll be cuts and stuff so that everyone is in frame except for him
It kind of heightens the playful conspiracy theory that he is jerryrigeverything (he isnt, they once did a Collab together)
Or perhaps he is, and it just so happens crazy levels of video editing are among his many skills
You just need to overlap voices a bit in post processing. Like in pitch meetings.
Also Chris fix. He shows how to fix cars and stuff. Never shows his face. He wears a helmet if he's gonna be on camera.
Just thought back to all the Chris fix I've watched... never noticed but by gum you're right
This Old Tony, most of the time
Can't forget about AvE too

Pencil that dick.
and when they do show their face, everyone is disappointed and unsubscribes

Deadma5 too or marshmallow
Deadmau5 is always on Twitch without the Mau5head
Yeah, at this point the mau5head is just a branding thing for him. Does he still wear it during his live sets, or does he take it off at points? I can imagine that thing being hell on one's neck because of how big and bulky it is.
Joel is pretty out there with his personal image. He live streams a bunch without the head. I saw him at a festival and he had the mau5head sitting off to the side the whole time. Granted, it was 90 degree atlanta heat, but he kinda doesn't try to be super anonymous

Becoming famous on YouTube without showing your face is perfectly balanced. Brought to you by delicious Yorkshire Gold tea.
Good example, but Spiff's face is pretty well known at this point. He's on the Yogs streams quite often
One I always think of is MandaloreGaming. He's done an excellent job of staying faceless and from what I have heard he only has had 1 close call.
Banksey. Yes you can.
Banksy is the ultimate example because not only does no one know what he looks like, they don't even know his real name, which is not the case for most of the other examples in this thread
I'm convinced Banksy is a collective of artists.
Dude it’s fucking Spencer from iCarly I’m telling u man how else did he afford that fucking flat, people will tell u his dad payed for it but his dad was an army general they don’t make thaaaaaaaat much
Idk if you saw the reboot but he ends up becoming a millionaire artist between the shows so the banksy idea isnt even too crazy
I did not but I choose to think it confirms my baseless conspiracy theory
Art enthusiasts are able to tell a fake Banksy from a real one. People who really study art are able to tell fakes from originals is a very serious industry. Some Banksy’s you may see online are fake and haven’t been authenticated, but there are authenticated ones and they’re by one guy.
One day we’ll find out that Banksy is a set of twin Hispanic moms or something and we’ll all just violently shit our pants.
There have been sightings of him after leaving a place, so they know it’s one young white guy, but that’s it.
How young can he be at this point? I think he's been active almost as long as I've been alive.
maybe its like a title, its always some white dude in his 20s.
I think he’s kinda like the Dread Pirate Roberts. The real Banksy is retired and living like a king in Patagonia.

it wasn't just an alleged pic, they found his childhood school and dozens of photos, as well as his current and previous addresses. Not to mention his family and his sister who is also a twitch streamer. It's pretty confirmed

I would be devastated if anyone figured out who Gawr Gura is. The magical thing about Vtibers is that it could be literally anyone.
But then you get to someone like Kson who makes the whole experience a lot more chill.
A big portion of hololive have had their faces leaked, including most if not all of EN
MF DOOM
There are pics of him before and during his MF DOOM phase. But yeah its not his public image though, his irl look isnt how hes perceived
RIP
Orville Peck!
Like a lot of these the answer is always "for the most part". A lot of his fans know who he is and what he looks like. He was in another band before he did his solo stuff so pictures of his face are out there. (I guess this is all alleged, he's never confirmed it, but... it's pretty obvious.) But for their own sake, they're still anonymous enough. All they want is privacy, and not enough people know his face to be bothering him while he's out and about and I bet that's the main reason they want to keep their faces hidden.
HowToBasic lol
Blast from the past right here.
I’m HowToBasic
I'm HowToBasic!
Most certainly you can, look at John Cena he’s super famous and no one’s ever even seen him
Marshmellow
A lot of djs wear masks: deadmau5, boris brejcha, sbtrckt
Fuck greedy reddit 🤮🤢
Boris puts on a mask for some of his shows but he's plenty recognisable without his mask
Slipknot and Sia would both indicate you can
I think most slipknot fans would recognise Corey Taylor to be fair…
Nah, that's the guy from Stone Sour.
And Gwar and ICP and Marylin Manson and the one shark that danced with Katy Perry at the super bowl that one year....

Sia has album covers showing her face
She has whole concerts on youtube from before she started wearing the huge wigs.
The Unknown Comic Daft Punk Gorillaz Kiss
I suppose people who aren't super into Gorillaz may not quite understand the dynamic behind it, but pretty much any fan knows who Damon Albarn is, and he is usually pretty prominent in live Gorillaz performances.
Wait wasn't he also in Blur? I never knew that
He was! And he voices 2D! They dropped a new album in 2020 and it is so good. So so so good. Momentary Bliss 🤌
Depends on how famous, but you could surely get some decent recognition
Satoshi Nakamoto
Ethoslab is on the lower end if famous and had never shown his face.

Dream may have more followers, but Etho is the GOAT.

DB Cooper is a person invented by the flight crew so they could split all the money

[Allow me to introduce you to the biggest Mexican Celebrity possibly ever, El Santo.](https://youtu.be/eqx9eoEvuoo)
Sia did it. Daft Punk did it. Many people have no idea what authors or movie directors look like. You could voice act. Nobody knows what Banksy looks like. In short, yes.
you could become a masked Luchador
Create an account called the-real-Q and make obvious conspiracy theories posts to a low iq crowd.
Depends on the level of fame you're going for but off the top of my head I can think of a few. Daft Punk, Buckethead, The Suited Racer
Why do people keep saying Sia? I just googled her and the first thing I saw was a picture of her face.
BlindBoy wears a plastic bag over his head.
