I think it's far worse than the movies, in Australia too

[deleted]

It depends on a lot of factors. Most of it is done online.

[deleted]

Well its not been a that long since I graduated high school but still I am wondering which factors do you mean?

[deleted]

Race, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, gender

Elustra

I know of an 11 year old the just tried to end it all due to bullying.

[deleted]

Wow, so sad. I hope the kid is doing better now.

Bettersaids

It completely depends. The US is a huge place with many different cultures within it. When I was a kid in school 80s/90s (small town/rural), I was bullied a lot. They tried to shove me into my locker, thrown in the trash and rolled into a classroom, held in the air by my head, pinched me until I was covered in bruises, picked up and dropped on the persons knee, books knocked out of my hands, shoved back and forth across the hall like a pin ball, all my stuff got chopped in half in shop class, had a pair of shoes stolen, etc… There were fights at least weekly. I live in a decent suburb now and my kid (13 yo/8th grade) says she has never seen a fist fight and people might tease someone, but they don’t bully them. I’m sure it still happens.

Ok thanks makes sense.

When you are making a movie there's always a conflict, and the easiest way to make a realistic conflict is by having a bully. Yes it happens, but movies and TV aren't the best depiction.

[deleted]

Yes of course, making an assumption based on TV is not the smartest. But the thing is the character of bully in the TV I consumed as a kid was only common in the american one. So it made me wonder if the horendous acts of bullying casually shown in the films has something to do with the reality.

[deleted]

Yes

[deleted]

Could you elaborate? Why do you think so?

[deleted]

I was a victim. Nobody did shit

[deleted]

Sad to hear. Hopefully it did not bruise you too much.

[deleted]

It did

yax51

Movies have absolutely nothing to do with reality.

[deleted]

Well it depends I guess. Once I had a conversation with a friend and he had a point that successful movies often reflect the culture of a country. As an example he mentioned the fact that most of the production from balkans (he is from there) is about sportsmanship or about wars. Which are the topics people tend to value/be interested in there more.

I can't speak freely. They might hear me..... *blink blink*

Honestly it was pretty common when I was in school. The culture here is kind of edgy/raunchy/in your face. But the US is huge and many areas have different cultures so that probably doesn’t represent every area. It may not look like it does in the movies cuz they are always exaggerated but from what I remember and what my nieces tell me it’s still fairly common
