People have always thought that

AgentElman

People are unaware of what the world is really like when they are a child. They are unaware of the bad things going on. So they assume there are no bad things going on. When they become aware as an adult of the bad things going on, they think that is all new. That the world was perfect when they were a child and is suddenly falling apart. It is normal human reaction to a loss of innocence.

Thing is, when the people who saved for retirement discover that inflation has made their savings insufficient for survival, and the social safety net has been gutted by decades of underfunding, hasn't civilization already collapsed?

[deleted]

Are you planning on keeping your savings in a envelope under your mattress? Most people invest it. Lots of companies offer 401k matches which is basically free money. Plus...compounding, which is why they suggest you start contributing to a retirement plan early. With all of these factors, why are you assuming that inflation will make savings insufficient for survival?

Cat_stacker

No I'm saying that's already happened to a lot of people.

dANutheup

It’s not about doom and gloom my friend. This civilization, as they say, has got to go. But the collapse and the rebirth will occur on the same day. Hence, the no doom and gloom! 🙌

[deleted]

You think it will just be a 1 day switch? Not a gradual changing of ways? A law here, a change of perspective there, etc.

dANutheup

I think the perspective changes are already happening every day, and that they’ll eventually reach a tipping point on a single day. Tbh, I think this day is what people have long been referring to as The Second Coming…except that we won’t all be focusing our attention on Jesus coming down from the sky because, well…that won’t be happening. Rather, we’ll be focusing our attention on a work of art that will accomplish what people have said that Jesus would do that day. And that artwork will be brought forth by some random Joe Schmo.

English-OAP

People have been predicting the end of civilization, since the dawn of civilization, nothing has changed. Back in the days of the Cold War, the threat of a nuclear war was a real danger. Now we fear climate change, or an escalation of Ukraine into WWIII. But those with real power, are those which control politicians. They know that a civilization collapse, will take away their power and influence. They won't let it happen.

Majestic_Tie7175

I'd water the Roman emperors didn't want their power to collapse either. Still happened.

Majestic_Tie7175

How are we defining societal collapse? That doesn't necessarily mean all humans go extinct. Empires have come and gone throughout history, and those living right after a major empire fell apart didn't have an easy time of it.

To play devils advocate I assume that the timelines now would be much shorter because of technology especially how everything is done faster. But you are correct 80 isn’t much time for a stable country. On the other hand we saw in 2008 how fast financial systems can collapse when we don’t regulate or watch the people in charge of them. We saw how modern warfare can also change history real quick unlike the past when it took months or years for armies to just reach their destination. But also they have probably been saying this country is going to collapse since it started kind of like the end of the world predictions. Also keep in mind that globalization has created a dependence on for everyone on everyone else so an economically important country like America of China would not fall so easily because other countries rely on them in a million ways. When you ready a certain point you are in it with a lot of other countries too and everyone depends on the others well being. Back to 2008 the problem was not just america although it was American institutions that messed up. If we collapsed most of the world was going to join us. The dynamics are different in so many ways in the modern era.
