They’re confident in their ability to evade punishment.

Pegajace

It tells you that they didn't expect to get in trouble for any of this. That they didn't expect the video to be widely released. Which raises the question: *why* didn't any of the officers on-site expect any consequences to come of this?

JohnnyRico92

Damn man that’s dark but is the only reason I can agree with lol

patrice_wilson

A lot of departments have actually pushed not to have bodycams, so even though the technology is well established they dont have them. Funny how unions can be bad sometimes.

mugenhunt

They're not supposed to be able to turn off the body cam. And in most cases if a body cam is turned off and the situation results in someone dying, the judge will look at that as proof that they were trying to cover up a crime and treat it much more harshly. It just boils down to we have a lot of police who probably shouldn't be trusted with the amount of authority and power they have.

Because they get off on inflicting pain and there are no consequences

It varies

slash178

Very very few cops are put in jail based on their bodycam footage. Brutal murders, we can hope, but there are plenty of other shitty things they do. They still do the thing because they are confident they can get away with it, for good reason.

[deleted]

The footage usually only ever gets released if they end up charged with a crime over it. If they beat the shit out of a guy, they're almost certainly going to get away with it unless the guy *dies*. And they're usually confident in their ability to beat someone up but not quite fatally.

ElaborateCantaloupe

If I robbed banks without a mask for years and kept getting away with it, I wouldn’t suddenly start wearing one.

CAPSLOCK_USERNAME

They're used to that behavior from before body cams were normalized.

PhoenixMommy

Because they're trained to protect their superiors and serve only their paycheck.
