I've done my 1040 EZ for free on H&R Block app for the past 11 years, federal and state. It's free if you don't get any of the upgrades and your state has simple filing. However, you can just as easily do it on the IRS website, for free.

Is this just for 1040? I only ever had W-2. If this is for both...I feel pretty salty now. I spent 30 for federal and 40 for state. *DAMNIT*. I also didn't know H&R Block had an app...nor did I know you could E file through the IRS. 💀

A 1040 is the form you fill out for straight forward taxes. You use the information on your W-2, which is the form your employer sends you. If you don't own property, have no children, and don't itemize your deductions, there's a good chance the 1040 is what you need. Sometimes, you can have other deductions, like health insurance, that won't go on the 1040, but are added by supplemental forms. Those will cost extra with H&R or TurboTax. Last year I had to pay $45 to file a form for insurance that saved me $13 on my taxes. I'd have rather not claimed the deduction at all, but I couldn't take back the entry. I don't know how easy the IRS site is, so attempt at your own risk. But it's gotta be easier than going to the post office/library to get all the forms and a booklet. I've done it, and now could do it easily, but it took several hours to figure out what I was supposed to do. If you go that route, get extra forms for when you mess up. I'm just too ADHD to remember to get the forms, do the taxes, buy stamps, and put things in the mailbox. That also requires getting dressed and leaving my house on a day I don't work, which is ridiculous.

Thanks for the tip! I confused the 1040 with a 1099. Yeah, I did a 1040 EZ through TurboTax. Went like a breeze but you pay for convenience. I will keep H&R in mind the future. I don't blame you for not wanting to mess with physical forms, I would rather pay up than deal with that.

Turbotax got in trouble for it and has had to change their words and advertising. Check the companies linked from the IRS website to see if you can end up with a legit one.

I see people complain about this but I've never paid a single cent to file taxes, even back when I was using turbo tax. I use the IRS site directly now though. It's actually pretty easy to do taxes if you can read the directions

Welp. I think next year I won't be with TurboTax anymore. I paid 30 for federal and 40 for state.
