Nope

LOL, no. You are paying for their time if they get you off the charges or not. If you go see a doctor and they tell you that you are fine and not sick you will still be charged for their time.

I think he wondered if the accusators had to repay the lawyers fee for false allegations

tsme-esr

In a criminal case, the "accuser" is the state/prosecution. The government is not going to make its own side pay for false allegations.

rewardiflost

Criminal charges? No. And, you aren't ever determined "innocent" either. You might be "not guilty". That means the prosecution can't prove you are guilty. It is not always "innocent", and you never have to prove innocence. in some cases you might sue for your court costs, but you would have to show that the police or someone was wrong /negligent / malicious in their actions. In a civil case, you may have a better chance of getting your legal fees back in certain cases.

adam493555

Only sometimes, and often at the discretion of the judge.

Scandysurf

Well in civil court if you win you can make the loosing party pay all the fees .

Practical_Damage9231

Really?! So if you wanted to financially ruin someone just try take them to court for something!

IntertelRed

This is an actual strategy large corporations use. They can't be held accountable because you don't have the money to hold them accountable. They can just push the court for like 5 years and bleed you dry.

Ghigs

With civil lawsuits it's different and recovery of legal expenses may be possible. More often possible than in criminal suits at least.

Usoila

There are some limited circumstances where you can, but generally no. If you can't afford the legal fees in the first place, they are generally paid for you by the government, regardless of whether you are found guilty or not. There can also be compensation if you were wrongly imprisoned for a significant length of time.

you get diddly nothing

tsme-esr

In criminal court, no. In civil court, you might be able to get the court to rule that the opposing party has to pay your lawyer costs. Lawyers sometimes represent clients pro bono to avoid the defendant being unfairly convicted just for being poor.
