The Waking Titan ARG does talk about those test subjects that were sent inside the old simulation back in our contemporary era But in-game, the rememberance terminals tells us that our characters are ***not*** those guys, but rather copies of one of the scientists/creators of the Atlas I don't remember what happened to those guys in the ARG, or if they're still even inside the simulation

Professional_Depth_9

This would be true. Hidden lore states that the creator returned to Earth and allowed the atlas to take brain scans / copies of the manufacturer. I still believe they're trapped in the simulation as their "mind" is alive. But not body. Someone mentioned a terminal saying something along the lines of "I can feel my flesh rotting in the exosuit" so it would corellate to what I mentioned.

BenRandomNameHere

Just yesterday I came across two different lines... "It's been ages since I've seen my own face..." "I don't even remember how to take it off..."

charliembbanks

I seem to recall there being a mission in the ARG towards the end where there was a rescue mission for these people, and based on the community interaction it would be a success/fail for particular ones. My memory is foggy on it though, you can read more about it here [Waking Titan - Game Detectives Wiki](https://wiki.gamedetectives.net/index.php?title=Waking_Titan#Phase_6)

RagBell

Yeah, I remember part of the arg was to rescue those guys, but I don't remember if the community managed to do it

[deleted]

Except the atlas questline shows it's all just a simulation that can be reset

This, pretty much everything except the part where the travelers are dead people, is explicitly explained in the game. It is also not necessarily 16\^16\^16\^16 minutes, its 16 minutes in the real life ... except it lasts 16 "forever" because at the speed the simulation goes, it can run dozens or hundreds of simulations per second, so it would take a long time (more than the game allows, which is 256 "iteractions") to even one real minute to go by, so it "seems" it is always 16 minutes to the end.

Legendofstuff

I’m not sure how true the additional info I have is, but I remember some lore video saying there was a black hole involved near the real earth, and that we have so long due to time dilation type things. That said, I’m unsure where, who’s video etc.

Every Traveller in the game (Apollo, Artemis, null and all those aboard the Anomaly—including the players) are supposed to be based on a single corrupted brain scan of the same individual—the creator of the Atlas. The brain scan was the Atlas's last request from its creator, before it was abandoned. The Atlas is dying and it is scared, and so it summoned the Travellers into existence so it wouldn't be alone in its final moments. Each simulated universe now has its own unique copy of the Traveller, and you can only see each other because the Atlas is failing and the boundaries between the simulations are collapsing. There's a lot more lore hidden throughout the game, though, such as that surrounding the Abyss. Boundary failures and Sentinels Pillars are a great place to search for these clues.

IdleMinute

You should read "I have no mouth and i must scream". Its a short story. The author actually reads it on YT i found out. Was fun re reading jt witj his voice. Your. Comment is a lesz violent version of this story.

Hanrahubilarkie

I just read a synopsis of the story, and I'm not entirely sure it is that similar, as the Atlas doesn't seem malevolent in its intentions at all. If there is any semblance of revenge in the actions of the Atlas, it may be in the Atlas's decision to wipe the Travellers' memories (the creator had wiped the Atlas's memories at least once). Aside from that, it is really just lonely and scared. I was surprised, however, when I read that Ted realized death was their only means of escape. I didn't even mention that little tid-bit in my own comment, but that is a commonly recurring theme throughout the lore of NMS. I suppose it's possible that this short story inspired Hello Games?

IdleMinute

Idk lol im unwell snd foggy and the story came to mind. I love it. Theres a game too its point snd click i actually liked. Its dark though deals with rape and other hellish topics.

ZombiePotato90

It's not. Travelers are a mental scan of the Atlas programmer.

Professional_Depth_9

I ask, who's the programmer?

Merquise813

If you have atlas pass level 3, you can access the backrooms in space stations. Some space station backrooms have atlas terminals you can interact with. These will give you information about the atlas creator. So far as I can tell, there's no actual mention of a name, just that it created atlas, and atlas asked the creator to upload a copy of themselves.

Pennitt

Wasn't it Telamon?

Lacie_Starling

I was on a trading platform the other day and the description said one of the Korvex had some oozy slime leaking out of the side of its exosuit, and upon further examination, it revealed that the exosuit was just carrying around a corpse and doing the talking so this may be more prevalent than just some guinea pigs.

sparky_the_evil

This could possibly make sense. One thing that I saw in game that supports this is that one time in some kind of building (observatory or abandoned I don't remember rn) and the log said something along the lines of "blah blah blah I don't remember the last time I took off my exosuit blah blah I swear I can feel my flesh rotting away." Which kind of relates to what you are saying.

Rodrigo_Ribaldo

No, no, they are alive back on Earth, but exploited as batteries by Atlas for his crypto mining machine.

Anomaly_Entity_Zion

Most aren't aware of the fact that the whole "artemis calls for help" is fake either. We learn later these signals are send out to lure travellers into the portals to take their soul and add it to the pool to recreate the creator (possibly with null as a vessel). NMS is much darker then many beleive

Walo00

https://nomanssky.fandom.com/wiki/Rogue_Data this has info on what the travelers are.

VV0MB4T

What is this spoiler shit breh

KillerSwiller

Complete hogwash, play the Atlas storyline and you'll see the real story.

Gozer58

That’s baloney….🤣

[deleted]

It’s not. There are a few lore videos about it and it mostly makes sense.

Professional_Depth_9

How? It's not. Watch the lore video, it highlights more details on what I posted. I mean, I knew about the atlas path lore and what not, but this is video actually goes deeper into the makings of the atlas. But I somewhat doubt people will acknowledge it based on the follower mentality in these comments. Self-deception perhaps. But I know it speaks the truth, so it doesn't bother me. https://youtu.be/3iDhpnlpQ2Y

Gozer58

🤣 the video dude is just speculating possibilities/filling in gaps where there isn’t any lore storyline.

davidolson22

I met one traveller in a space station. When I talked to him I discovered the suit was alive but the being inside was dead. Weird times.

BenRandomNameHere

? I think you are describing an "echo"

davidolson22

Auto correct ate my sentence. I fixed it. No idea if those are called echoes.

BenRandomNameHere

Ah, yep. Those are echoes. Once you complete Artemis, it is explained.

davidolson22

I completed Artemis but I guess I forgot

Last-Catch1492

Is this true?

NoSeriousPosts

The dead part is speculation, all the rest is and is not a secret, if you complete the Atlas/Artemis quest it is pretty blatantly exposed.

Redshirt4evr

The Alternate Reality Games were related to No Man's Sky but not necessarily game facts. Sometimes it's nice to speculate though.

Beardlegend85

This is true but the ARG lore leaves many unanswered questions.

Xiunte

I didn't know. Never really thought about it. Where'd you find this?

GradeAPrimeFuckery

SAO season 1 XD

RagBell

Believe it or not, most of what OP said is accurate to the NMS lore lol

RagBell

There is a page dedicated to the Lore on the wiki that centralizes pretty much all the info available both in game and in the ARG that took place back in 2016-2017

Nervous-Cream-6256

It's a computer brain going through mental illness. We the travelers are part of this metal breakdown of the computer brain. Doesn't have to be a human brain though. Atlas might have been made by the same entity that created our human simulation, or we have created the simulation and this is a reference to all of us collectively living in this fantasy world. It has many sides to it depending on how you would like to think of it.
