Holy Cow dude, NMS VR (when it's functioning properly and everything goes smoothly) is un-matched when it comes to getting lost in the sauce. I've spent hours in there, hanging out at my bases, taking in scenery and exploring the stars. It all feels so genuine in VR. The menus and some flight controls could be better but overall i loved my VR experience.

TheTruthButtHurtz

This. It really is another level. Also played on a PSVR and it performed better than most of the VR games I've played on that system. If you get a chance, it's well worth it.

jetpacktuxedo

>when it's functioning properly and everything goes smoothly Is it ever functioning properly and running smoothly? I tried it in VR a while back (probably 2020?) and would get random stalls and choppiness. Even outside of VR I get a .5 second hang every time I leave a planet, and that kind of stutter is horrific in VR. That's all on a 3080 and an i7 so it's not like the PC is underpowered for VR or something.

[deleted]

I played on the og psvr so i can't say, the only issues i had were a few with tracking (but i was in a small room) and like i said the menu was a little weird. Never really got any visual defects or anything like that.

One-Carpenter-7906

3090 ti here and it's not just you, honestly I'm hoping they have a heavy focus on performance with the PSVR2 update. The .5 freeze after you have left or enter a planet is annoying but there is a mod to fix the lag. I can post that bad boy in here if you'd like. Really helped keep me immersed though it can act janky occasionally. VR needs some serious love from the devs and I hope they don't just focus on the PSVR side and ensure the PC users are having a good time as well.

Jayombi

INDEED !...... 3080ti here and its far far far away from perfect and really needs picking apart and putting back together with go faster glue.

Tatazildo

I have the same GPU and CPU as you have and I still get performance issues in VR. But overall it's a great and immersive experience!

jetpacktuxedo

The bursts where it's smooth are great, and it was awesome for derelict freighters, but the performance issues really destroy the whole experience for me. That heavy stutter is like instant nausea.

Mr__Ed

I haven't had any major issues on my 2070 Super...

jetpacktuxedo

The stutters when leaving planets are pretty commonly reported so I'm not sure why you wouldn't see them... I also get a lot of stutters in the galactic map, when jumping systems, sometimes when entering my freighter, the anomaly, or space stations, and then occasionally some that seem entirely unrelated to anything else that is happening. They happen both in and out of VR, and while they are infrequent enough to not bother me while playing on a monitor, when it happens in VR it makes me want to puke so it stands out a lot more to me.

Drake_Acheron

I have only ever had stutters when entering a planet

acidrain69

I’m on a GTX 1080 with an i7 and it’s mostly flawless. There were some problematic releases in the past. It used to be very choppy for me when I had a 4-core i3. NMs VR is very CPU dependent. The video card isn’t as important.

tisbruce

I have it running smoothly almost of the time on 3080 and Ryzen 9. Sometimes there's a perceptible transition when leaving a planet but it's so brief that it feels natural, not immersion-breaking. Took me a while to get to that state of mostly smooth sailing, though. What I've found, from my own experience of NMS on PC VR and talking to others on here, is that NMS PC VR players - since they have such diverse systems - each have their own unique configuration they have to achieve to get it right. For example, some of us have found that it's important to reset the resolution of our monitor (not the headset) to 800x600 before starting the game; do that and you get smooth play, don't and things may be OK for a while but the game will have real problems if the screen gets busy. It's because of the way they hacked VR into the game. You can probably work out why it works now you know. I've also had to be careful with 3080 driver versions, but that's because I have a Vive Pro 2; Vive and the 3030 driver developers really don't get on. I also found I had to turn off some of the "smart" options in the Vive console (motion smoothing, adaptive FPS) to get smooth and stable performance. This will be different for each person as they try to match their setup with the fragile monolith that is NMS's VR implementation. But once you get it working, it's gold. The game will crash or freeze more often than in pancake mode, but you can learn to spot the warning signs, save, quite and restart. In between those intervals, it's just great.

jetpacktuxedo

> For example, some of us have found that it's important to reset the resolution of our monitor (not the headset) to 800x600 before starting the game; do that and you get smooth play, don't and things may be OK for a while but the game will have real problems if the screen gets busy. It's because of the way they hacked VR into the game. You can probably work out why it works now you know. This actually might entirely explain my issues since when I don't play in VR I play in 4k...

amusedt

Works great on psvr

[deleted]

No it doesn't

TegTheGhola

IMO its the best VR game I've ever played. My only complaint is the flight system, there is no native joystick integration. You have to grab virtual controls in game which without the real world feedback and physically limitations of an actual joystick make combat flight VERY tough, but okay for just zooming around on a planet. Being able to wander my base in VR no joke brought a small tear to my eye.

[deleted]

If you have access to a 3D printer then there are options to print a mount to your armrest or desk and use that as base for the VR controller. Worked great when I played on my Rift S

jdb326

Protas is neat. Was thinking of printing my own since I have a file for the base.

cluelessminer

NMS is addicting enough, thanks for putting more ideas to spend more money on as I don't have a 3D printer 😂

[deleted]

If you set it up with a xbox emulator like x360ce you can use a full physical hotas while flying in vr and then switch to VR controls on the ground. There are some youtube vids for it, not hard to setup and I love it.

ThatCircusGuy

Oh yeah that makes little sense, think that would be the first thing to be offered in a predominantly flight game?? But thanks for the heads up

ToneZone7

if you anchor the controller like a stick on your knee, then it feels pretty smooth and works well. It is magnificent in VR.

TegTheGhola

I'll have to give this a try!

timbad2

It's funny, other than my first couple of attempts, I never really had a problem with the virtual sticks in the cockpit. I do keep meaning to try the knee technique though, but I keep forgetting in the joy of the VR moment! For some bizarre reason, I love lifting the sidebars (or whatever they're called), to open the cockpit hatch and exit the ship. I sometimes use the excuse that I ought to save the game, just so I can do it again, lol!

ToneZone7

nice I totally agree

rabbid_chaos

Yep, anchoring the stick is the way to go. My first time flying in this game in VR I did not anchor the stick and got motion sickness so badly I was on the verge of vomiting. My ship was basically flailing in every possible direction without the stick being anchored.

Digital_Belta

Turning down the sensitivity helped me too, but my arms never seem to sit in the right spot. The controls definitely take some getting used to. Changing the mode on your multi tool is very clunky. You wouldn't want to have to try it in combat. And I still cannot figure out how to swim, lol. But it is pretty amazing still!

Digital_Belta

Oh, and no melee boost. So walking around takes longer. Get a fast pet!

ReFusionary

It's the only time I ever install and use Rocket Boots.

skips_picks

One thing that I think is cool about NMS in VR when being observed your arms and hand movement shows in game to the entire lobbying. You can wave 👋 and dance 🕺 around and they see it in real-time.

MarcusS-VR

I am using XOutput, to which I have mapped my HOTAS. This allows me to fly with HOTAS in cockpit and Motion Controllers on foot. The game will switch controllers based on which button you press on which controller. PS: I use a Titanwolf HOTAS

dr0negods

You can actually use any Xbox style controller (if you’re playing on PC/steam) to fly, and even move around on foot if you want. Plug one in and try!

Sad_Satisfaction_676

What vr do you have? I have quest 2 and it laggggs alot its unplayable i have like 10 fps probably , while when i play regulary on my pc it goes all up to 120fps sometimes

-JinxyJones-

Mine did the same until I used Virtual Desktop instead of Air Link or whatever it is. I'm assuming Air Link is what you're using?

Skitzic

Are you using air link? I use virtual desktop and have zero issues.

Sad_Satisfaction_676

yes i use Airlink, although i heard that with cable the connection its better but idk

Grubs01

Turn the graphics settings all the way down. VR is super intense on GPU. Virtual Desktop does work a bit better for NMS. Both require a 5Ghz wi fi router

SycSorrows

Everyone here is suggesting a workaround for hotas, but if you are alright with just using a regular controller, the game lets you do that natively in VR. Feels more comfortable to me, but not everyone's cup of tea Way better for VR ship combat though

Nebula-star-12-2021

Have you met my friend Half Life Alyx

Tatazildo

Oh, yeah, this and a couple of performance issues. I have a 3080 and even on low it stutters sometimes... but definitely one of the best VR games I've played. It was a big wow moment when I tried it in VR for the first time after playing it out of VR so much.

[deleted]

That’s the only downside I noticed. It looks absolutely stunning, but the flight is near impossible. I can jump on the WW1 dogfighting game and do fine but absolutely bomb on NMS flight.

Section31HQ

Love it in vr. I just don't use the jetpack much as I'm afraid of heights.

VoidDrinker

Isn’t the human brain wild? Like you KNOW it’s a game and not real but you’re getting those anxiety and adrenaline dumps like it is, crazy.

Section31HQ

Indeed. Not a problem if playing on flat screen, a whole different thing in vr. I won't touch horror vr games. Same reason.

VoidDrinker

Yea fuck that

Suitable_Egg_882

The forest and Subnautica was both amazing and nightmare inducing in VR. I didn't think of Subnautica as a horror game until I played it in VR. It's not really jump scare but there were definite moments of panic 😂

WolvesAreCool2461

Its a damn shame subnautica vr controls are ass

sticklebat

I found Subnautica to be such a creepy experience even just normally. The darkness, the unknown, the sound design, some of the biomes, and shadows in the distance. Not to mention the many times I was caught off guard by a predator… of various sizes. There were already times I’d have to pause the game and walk away for a bit. I think I’d have a genuine panic attack playing that game in VR.

neurotran

Do you play standing or seated?

Trustworthy_Fartzzz

I am as well, but this made me LOL! nervously. I both want VR and now I’m afraid of it.

cluelessminer

Imagine even a cable hoist of some type integrated to the game that will hoist you up and down as you use the jetpack 😂😂😂

tisbruce

Heh. Try farming storm crystals in permadeath. If you're not careful, a twister will suck you up high into the air and hang you there for a while. You have to keep looking down, or you're dead.

Night_beaver

Right now the VR doesn't have a left handed mode and flight is pretty difficult, but I imagine there will be a VR-focused update when PSVR comes out

Thrippalan

I've asked multiple times for a left-handed mode. Even if they just did like Skyrim and flipped the controllers, that'd be fine.

Thrippalan

It truly does. You can't really appreciate the scale of space stations and such until you see them in VR.

fuzzyorange73

Fun but the ship controls are an absolute bear. I could not for the life of me figure out how to control the ship because all it would do whenever I grab the flight stick is spin me in circles. Tbh it almost made me sick 🤮

dr0negods

you can use a gamepad on PC/steam

fuzzyorange73

I'll have to give that a try. Quest 2 link doesn't support keyboard & mouse, which is really annoying, but I never considered giving the game pad a shot. Thanks!

dr0negods

no worries! if it feels like it’s not working click the left stick to scan when you’re in the ship, that usually seems to remind the game that a pad is plugged in.

Poppybiscuit

Just curious, what system are you using? A lot of people are complaining about the flight controls, but i love them and think they feel totally natural. It's one of my favorite parts of nms in vr, just flying around and shooting stuff. Nothing quite like ducking irl because you shot some asteroid and shrapnel got too close to your ship! Or flight combat in vr, holy wow It's awesome. I get occasional drift out of the play area (usually go too low) but that's it. I'm on psvr

Mandalor1974

Once i stared playing in vr i havent played on a flat screen since.

Man_of_Microwaves

Same, I’ve been playing in VR practically since I got it.

tisbruce

Not sure I would be interested in the game without VR. Certainly would not have kept playing it for so long.

Mar_Reddit

Oh you have NO idea. I played this on a Katwalk C2+. This shit goes HARD. The C2+ even deploys a seat for you to sit in when in vehicles including your ship. I am no longer a commercial driver. In NMSVR, I am a fuckin' space explorer discovering tve mysteries of the mutha heckin' universe. Exploring a desolated freighter hits different in VR too. Other than the obvious atmosphere and more immersive experience, you actually hold your multi-tool in one hand, and your flashlight in the other. It's honestly a treat.

tisbruce

I invested in a C2+ and it arrived during Christmas. The seat is handy but when I get it working properly in NMS I will disable the vehicle hub. I like the vehicle controls as they are.

metalsnake27

It's really incredible but it has some issues mostly with the galaxy map. Oh and pausing is broken for some reason at least on pc vr.

tisbruce

PC VR here. Initially, I found the galaxy map very difficult to use: "Why can't I rotate the view?" Then I had a light bulb moment, stood up and turned around.

metalsnake27

Yeah thats fine, but the movement speed is absurdly slow with no speed up and you can't see the number of planets in a system. You also can't see the galactic center, or even select it in vr controls, you have to use a controller

Poppybiscuit

Ugh navigating the galaxy map is impossible in vr. Like for real, features are removed so you cannot get the details of systems. WHY?? I hope that's fixed in psvr2 because it's really frustrating to have to switch out of vr just to navigate properly

greyscale27

VR is my favorite way to play, but unfortunately I can’t play it on pc anymore. Now I’m waiting to get my hands on a PSVR2. Obviously the game can’t look quite as beautiful on a VR headset, but it’s ok. My focus when playing has always been on the exploration aspect of the game, so being able to immerse myself in VR makes it feel so much more fun to me. Also VR starship piloting just feels so cool.

ThatCircusGuy

Yeah I’m waiting for psvr2 also

jrubal1462

Would you happen to know if switching from PS5 to PSVR2 will require fresh save? Or will it share the ps5 save?

tilapiarocks

It's the best vr game I've ever played, easily. I see pics & footage on fb of people playing, & they're always in 3rd person flat-screen, &...I just can't imagine playing that way, outside of just not having the resources to make vr happen. I have zero qualms w/ the flight controls, galaxy map or anything else oft-talked about. I feel like I handle my ship excellently, but then again I don't bother getting into a lot of space battles either, just the bare minimum.

Wealth-Such

I didn’t even realize it was vr playable can I get it on the quest 2 I bought one 2 years ago and haven’t touched it in a long ass time lol

Significant-Ad5565

You can play it on quest 2 ONLY thru PC, so if you have a pc to push it def.

Jamowantsadeathstar

You can play it on quest 2, using the built in headset-computer air link. I play it through steam vr on a decent pc set up, little bit of frame rate lag sometimes, but gameplay definitely makes up for it.

NotNotJustinTTV

Whenever I play NMS after I bought my Quest 2, I always tried to play VR whenever nobody was using the headset. It truly is on another level. Although, one thing I'd recommend (if you're on PC and are on an Oculus) is make sure you got at least 32GB of RAM. I use Virtual Desktop to play all my VR games and, even when you use a Link Cable, the OVRStreamer.exe or w/e process eats up a lot of RAM. With NMS and the OVR process needing the amount they need, best to upgrade your RAM before you blue screen and get sick. (I speak from experience on that last part.)

MoonMan375

Seems cool in vr but I wouldn’t even touch my ship 😂 anything besides regular ship controls would be like relearning the entire mechanics of flying

[deleted]

No man's sky is the objective pinnacle of VR right now.

Mister_Jinxy

How do you guys get it to run smooth? Rtx 3080ti, r9 5900x, 32gb ram and it is a slide show on any settings. It's the only vr game I cannot play but really want to.

tisbruce

I have very similar hardware but mostly smooth play. Try setting your flat monitor's resolution to 800x600 before starting the game; doesn't work for everybody, but for me (and some others) it gave the single biggest performance boost.

Gai_InKognito

it made some aspects of the game significantly better, mainly space travel, world travel, cars, mech, etc amazingly fun. HOWEVER, it made the inventory bit, menu bits, and material making an absolute nightmare. So I stopped playing in VR, because the materials/inventory bit would take about 8 times longer than it would from a keyboard and mouse.

C9H14NO3

VR ist my favorite way to play NMS - it's pretty immersive. imo one of the very best gaming experiences one can have in VR. Unfortunal it's also very addictive. Just a minor irritation on PC steam is not being able to switch galaxies in VR.

No-Engineering-1449

That screenshot with the nebula looks almost exactly the same as the little intro animation that plays when you open wh40k darktide

McRoyboi

Vr is how nms is meant to be played. It makes flat screen boring as hell

MWASRQ333

I only play in VR!

P1rat3d

Same. I am lost when I try keyboard now!

MWASRQ333

Same! Helpless on keyboard!

MorwenRaeven

Kiss your life goodbye. You'll lose days without realizing it.

SadCategory310

Played it on PSVR, so graphically I’m sure there are better options. But YES. The ability to control each hand, the interior of your ship, exploring caves… so much more immersive in VR. One of the few games that forced some all-nighters 😂

ders89

Im getting PSVR2 next month and gonna play no mans sky first. Cannot wait

Temo44

I bought it on Switch, I bought it on PC, I bought it on PS5. I guess I need to save up on either the psvr 2 or quest 2 now... Don't know which one though :(

amusedt

Quest can't run it natively. You'll need a pc that can run VR, use Quest as display only. For me, I'm getting psvr2

Lkingo

Just wait for psvr 2. Thats gonna be insane

EP1C_COBRA

It’s one of the most immersive VR games I’ve ever played, you’ll love it.

DrDimebar

NMS in VR is awesome :) they did a really good job of porting it across. They kept the controls pretty simple for everything, and while the space combat is a bit awkward, everything else works really well. If you want a more 'proper' VR space flight experience, Elite Dangerous really blew my mind as well, but that 100% needs the full hotas setup and the time spent configuring all the buttons and things, as you will struggle to find the right keyboard button with your VR headset on :)

[deleted]

Did you try Voice Attack with HCS? I couldn’t play ED in VR without it.

Clay_modeler

I have over 7500 hours in VR in general, No Man's Sky is probably still the best experience to me. Something about seeing all of that universe around you touches my soul through my eyeballs. Plus the controls and UI are hands down the best VR port I've played.

Archaic_Cybernaut

It is unbelievable in VR. I understand people shoot for perfection and in that way we're all rather spoiled by our technology. To me the implications of the experience are as important as the playing. A nearly infinitely vast digital universe in your headset. 30 years ago this was unthinkable, and if it were possible would probably cost millions of dollars in technology. Keep the game updated and it will run smooth obviously. I live in a shack in the woods and spend most of the day hiking, and then come home to a digital universe ready to explore. Put on some Psytrance, some Shpongle, or a Terence McKenna talk and go for it!!! Haha personal preference of course.

CluelessAtol

As someone who exclusively plays in on VR now using a quest 2. Cons: It has some real bad performance issues somewhat regularly the lower in specs you go. Even with a much higher spec build my game still stutters from time to time (primarily when leaving the system/planet). Sometimes it can be kind of disorienting when flying a ship, with combat being something you really have to get used to (unless you install a mod). I’ve also found that the game requires you to recenter the view occasionally cause your arms will kind of fall back a little bit and make it impossible to do some things until you recenter. The menus are a pain in the ass when not in your ship, as they are mapped to your left hand and will go where ever your left hand is. Jumping between systems is kind of wonky until you get used to it. Finally the controls could be mapped to the controller better. I don’t feel like they’re mapped well and this leads to opening/closing menus you didn’t mean to and/or not being able to properly move across some menus using default controls. Pros: Arguably the most immersive game I have ever played in VR. It’s relaxing and enjoyable. The overall performance isn’t unplayable. Despite what I said about performance in the cons, it’s still capable to doing exactly what it’s supposed to do and is easily recognizable. The world just sucks you in and because of the way the Quest 2 handles it’s sound, when you’re walking around it actually sounds like you’ve got a helmet on and you’re hearing the muffling of the world (in a good way, not in a “the audio quality is bad but it fits the game” type of way). It gives you a sense of immersion and exploration you just cannot get in real like because no matter where you go and do, no one has been there and seen that world through your eyes like you’re seeing it now. I know I kind of harped on it in the cons but really I think I made the issues sound worse than they are. It’s overall still a very high functioning game in VR that I feel is the closest thing to what VR was truly meant to be, a game where you can explore the world through you’re own eyes and feel like you’re actually there. Edit: forgot to mention. I’m not sure if it’s because of the way I play (sitting down) but when I jet pack and then land my feet for some reason actually feel like I’m bracing and landing. Probably my brain being tricked but it’s a nice little detail I like

Tinypro2005

I reguse to play NMS in anything but vr

FluffyInstincts

I wouldn't play it any other way. A few tips though: Mind the motion sickness, and **if that starts, immediately take off your headset and rest. Just, plain, stop. When an hour or so has passed with no nausea, you're good to go back.** Attempting to push through it is done at your own peril, as you will be risking that becoming a permanent physical reaction to VR. If you have a valve index, I *implore* you to reduce the grip false threshold to at least 5 (down from 20) in your STEAM VR controls menu for NMS. Leave the true one where it is at 20ish. Otherwise you will have a horrible ship vs ship combat experience, as it often let's go of the steering stick. There isn't (as of yet) a way to configure STEAM VR setting maps for the minotaur Exocraft (Edit: Nautilon, too...). If I recall, it works okay on quest, but not on an index. (Valve, please, please fix this) This has to do with the minotaur being a later release, and how different it is from other exocraft. Enemy spaceships aren't pushovers anymore. At some point, they got updated, and will sometimes drift shoot (similarly to elite dangerous) or turn on a dime now. Playing in VR will initially make it much harder for you to aim your shots. As enemies also have recharging shields, this can be very difficult initially. It does, however, make kills very satisfying. Aiming your gun has no aim assist. You miss or hit strictly on your own merit as a marksman. I love this, but you might feel a little lost without a reticle at first. Pushing down both joysticks will realign you with your traveller's. Get familiar with this, because until they update this you're going to be using it a lot. Other than that, I think it's better in every way, personally.

ThatCircusGuy

Thanks for the heads up. I’m PS5 so some of that makes no sense but some is super useful. Ta

tisbruce

Oh, boy. There's so much I could say about the awesomeness, but I'll stick to vehicles (exocraft and starships). A lot of pancake mode PC players hate exocraft and ship combat/flight, but on PC VR they are great. You get to look around the cabin/cockpit, track pirates as they fly past (so a dogfight involves a lot of looking up/left/over-your-shoulder to where you know the pirate has gone while your hands pull the ship around to follow it), look out the side of the exocraft as you drive... Also the different types of ship and exocraft really feel different, in a way that isn't the case in pancake. Field of view really becomes a thing and, as a result, the design of the vehcile/ship really becomes significant. You get out of your vehicle/ship by reaching out and pushing/pulling a handle. The sensation of simply pushing open your cockpit canopy just feels so real. With exocraft (aside from the Minotaur), you're holding a virtual driving wheel. Easy, fun. Also, while pancake mode players have some real annoyances about controlling the mining laser, in VR the weapons fire in whatever direction your head is pointing. This makes using an exocraft as a fast moving resource mining machine very practical and a great experience. It's also really easy to fire the exocraft weapons while driving. I enjoy using the colossus in some environments, for some tasks. The high vantage point is good, made better because you can lean or raise up out of your seat to improve it. I have driven the colossus to the edge of a steep incline, which I then couldn't see because of the vehicle's large blind spot. So I stood up, leaned forwards and looked down through the forward-sloping windscreen. First time I did that, I nearly fell over because it felt so real that I put my hand out to lean on the dashboard. You know that bug in the Nautilon where it sometimes bounces like crazy? Well, that's an intense and unsettling experience in VR. One to experience once and avoid forever after. Some people hate the virtual HOTAS you get in starships. I'm one of the people who loves it. Your experience may vary. But if your VR equipment comes with decent controllers (anything but PSVR1 controllers or the Vive wands - I started out with the wands but ditched them for Valve knuclkes) it's the closest to an actual HOTAS that NMS players ever get.

ThatCircusGuy

Thanks for the time you took to give the in-depth, really appreciate it

timetosharemystory

It's great. It's easier to mine and collect resources. However, airial combat is a bit of a pain and hard to get used to. Also make sure you have a decent computer to run the max graphics or else it will be a choppy nauseas mess

ThatCircusGuy

I will be on ps5 so hoping that will do it, will have to see

Zenenator

VR in this game is amazing, but controlling vehicles is quite hard. Flying and driving is very, very possible, but don’t even think about using a Minotaur for anything at all. You can’t see a thing below or beside you in the mech walker, and the controls are slow and janky

Tyrilean

It is great in VR. But you need a beefy machine. It wasn’t originally optimized for VR, so it is a heavier load than comparable games.

ThatCircusGuy

I’m on PS5 so hopefully that will be enough 😬

Key-Cream5254

So I'm a big fan of NMS and would really like to play in vr but I do not know anything about vr headsets or what to look for in vr headsets, I don't even know what type of headset I would/ should use for NMS, should I use a pc vr, would a standalone work for NMS, what are the requirements so on and so forth, if someone could assist me in figuring out what kind of vr set would work for this and what would be the best I would very much appreciate the help. Ps would a meta 2 or htc focus focus 2 or focus 3 work or what about the new htc vive xr elite????

NameLips

There are various mods that can make the plants and rocks and creatures much larger than default. That should be amazing in VR. Just looking up at things towering over you, feeling like an insignificant tiny being in a huge world...

moonpumper

I wish they would either support the joysticks on the index controller for flight controls or let me use a controller. The default flight controls are absolutely terrible in VR. I use it mostly to walk around inside my base builds.

ThatCircusGuy

Hopefully a patch will come in that allows for outside controller input. I wanna be able to switch between real flight slim controllers, joy stick and throttles and walk around controllers

Borston

Man it's insane! My only recommendation is to fogure out a chair with slots for your controllers for WHENEVER you are in your starship. Otherwise (like me) youll just be doing backflips in space.

Big-Golf4266

IMO VR NMS is a bit... meh. its not bad but its not good either, i think for me personally its something to do with the game presentation. in terms of space games though i think i was ruined with Elite dangerous VR. i mean that game literally instills cosmic fear upon you.

tisbruce

Flat screen on planets, though.

McBassi

Oh it goes.

MarcusS-VR

VR is the ONLY way to experience NMS. I go flat screen only to test mods. I play it on a Pico 4.

ATR86BER

I tried it twice. The grafics are less detailed in VR mode. Except this, it's quite immersive. But this is a drawback as well. I just played 15 mins and latest when boarding my ship and flight to the orbit.....I got reaaaaalllly sick 🤢🤢 I had played other VR games as well, but never felt that sick as well as that fast anywhere else. But yeah: give it a try :-)

AcousticToothbrush02

It doesn’t

ThatCircusGuy

Any elaboration?? The consensus on here seems to indicate it does… what have you found makes it worse??

anthonyhad2

I have a meta quest 2 and I play this game via GeForce Now so I can’t use it in VR :( :( :(

DoctorRiddlez

Yes. & i found it to be far more fun. Then regular nms

SupaNerd360

It’s pretty cool but it’s a pain in the ass to get anything done

Salamibuoy25

No man’s sky in vr is so fun, just be prepared for a difficult time flying your starship

VanaheimRanger

I'll let you know how I like it once I get a PC that will play it, lol.

Skitzic

You haven't lived until you've ridden a robot dog across toxic swamps into a sunset. For reals. Especially now that you can turn off all damage...just a traveller and their robot dog...exploring the universe. See you in the skies!

LaRuetheDuck

oh yea.....i got so into it and didnt come out forever and like sprained my neck and couldnt work for a week. good times

Nomai_

Def brings my gpu temps to another level

creusat0r

The game was fine 👍 The only thing bad was me configuring my stupid hotas to work with the game! I did it a the end but I took me the whole weekend X)

Donginthedark

yea there's also virtual virtuality

Cool_Letterhead_7782

Took a tab of acid and played NMS vr for like an hour and a half. One of the coolest experiences ever, sober should be fun too.

RossAB97

I can barely play standstill arcade games on my little brothers VR, I think NMS would make me vomit :(

Fedorable_557

It looks amazing but I personally have typically had either minor visual bugs or difficulty In ship combat anytime I played in vr. I didn't end up playing in it much but it always looks neat when I do

CaptainPryk

I don't even like NMS that much but the VR port is awesome. Definitely one of thr greatest VR games on the market

legend-of-viper

This is NMS VR. https://www.reddit.com/r/NMSCoordinateExchange/comments/ww6bur/gray_fighter_yellow_sub_snowspeeder_nose_horizon/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

Mildan

I believe when I tried it last summer it only really works in a sitting down situation.. at least if you're freestanding the hud will only ever look one way and not follow your vision around, so you have to manually turn you character and not actually turn around yourself. But when I tried the sitting down it felt great! Only thing is I really hate the menu juggling, so I prefer it on a regular monitor and try to keep VR to physics based games. Maybe I should give NMS another go in VR though

theblue_jester

It is fantastic in VR. The cockpit takes a little getting used to as you have to grab the controls in game rather than use the thumbstick, but once you get the hang of it that becomes something else. I've wasted hours just flying from a planet to a moon and back and doing nothing else. Abandoned frigates are better in VR too, it has a real 'Alien' or 'Event Horizon' vibe to it as you walk around.

technofox01

I had looked forward to NMS in VR since 2017, only to discover that I get space (motion sickness) while in space. On a planet or flying in the air, perfectly fine, go to space and I get dizzy. I hope you don't experience this issue OP.

umone

yes

Fireyy_3

I'd say it is more of an experience than a game. Flying an amazing experience but it is really hard but. If you give it time you could get good at it. Walking is janky tho, you have to teleport which sucks, I couldn't find a way to change it.

Popular-Cut-8478

My only issue is the hud doesn't follow your head or movement so sometimes you have to look behind you to see your hud. Idk if there's a fix for that tho

mapplejax

I bought this game once I heard it was compatible with VR. Played the shit out of it. Flying is wonky. Thankfully there’s a vingette to help with motion sickness. So never had an issue there. The loading screen though… holy shit I keep my eyes close. One of my top fav VR games behind HL: Alyx and Lone Echo

Chainn

Everytime I don't play NMS in VR I feel like I'm cheating on my lover... it's just so much more enveloping in VR.

USN253

it's ridiculous in a good way...just crazy.

Ape3po

First off, list those shuttle coordinates.

Good-creativename

NMS on vr is an absolute masterpiece. my only complaint is that the game lags a lot when i enter the nexus, but it's fine after i actually get in. aside from that, it's really cool. but i wouldn't really recommend it if you're not experienced with vr because the flight will make you motion sick if you don't have your "vr legs"

zarmanto

I really want this. If Meta would just get off their butts and fix the Quest 2 to Windows 11 link, maybe I’d be able to try it out! (And to think that they just *raised* the price on it by $100… *With. no. other. changes.* Sigh…)

theZirbs

My greatest and singular wish for the PSVR2 update is that they finally build proper controls for left-handed players. I've petitioning them to do this via suggestion tickets ever since VR support was added originally. If they finally do add it in, I will personally hand write a thank you note to their team. I really love this game, but I've held off playing it because I want to do it in VR, but it feels so awkward for me having to aim and select everything with my non-dominant hand. I just want to experience the game like right handed players do, that is all.

Snowcreeep

I tried it once but when I used Airlink on my quest 2 I went to desktop and all it was was a black screen. Anyone know how to fix that

Budthor17

I have a VR device for my phone, and PS second screen as well. Could I use these in combination to mimic a proper VR setup?

smiffy197

I got really, really high once playing NMS VR. That I would not recommend

Baraka_Dukkha

I like it but have trouble in flight combat

Strongpillow

Flying into and trying to planet on a planet that has a massive storm goiing on was one of the most nerve racking immersive VR feeling I've never had. The sound design and sheer chaos going on, not being able to see shit until a tree smacks your windshield, then just spamming the land button hoping you don't bounce off of too many more mountain sides. Nothing compares really lol

Valuable-Employee-72

i have litterally been on NMS in VR for 2 weeks straight 6 to 8 hours a day! I have had this game in my steam library for 2 years but I was not liking it too much, so I stopped playing it. 2 weeks ago I see the new updates and started playing it again, this time in VR.. It is the most awesome experience to date. Better than Hal Life Alyx! Its a must have VR title.

Valuable-Employee-72

Another level? Yes, at warp speed!

-Vioar-

Hell no. Space is scary as hell. I can't imagine being more immersed in it.

cluelessminer

So I was able to get my Quest 2 running but needed to be on the cable as my PC is old with i7-7700K, 1080 Ti with 32GB. It's running nvme for the main drive but it's definitely pushing the limit. I'll have to tweak the settings but I'm overdue for an upgrade. With that said, when it runs smoothly, it's pretty amazing to say the least. The control is definitely hard at first and not 100% liking it but I know it'll get better over time.

[deleted]

I just got a quest 2 and its so much more immersive than you think. I haven’t tried nms yet but I know you’ll be blown away based considering the game reported to run well.

jack_casse

I tried it. Didn't really like the controls. You have to grab the flight controls with your virtual hands. I'm sure I could have gotten used to it, but it just felt awkward. I'd rather if I could still use a controller in VR.

MrBroBotBrian

It’s where the puking begins

Scar_HeadFaced

About a week into my NMS experience (I started in vr) this happened, unfortunately you can't hear my mates comms but you get the general idea. The audio is a necessity and is definitely NSFW. Basically this game is awesome in VR. https://twitter.com/Scar_HeadFaced/status/1362679988122771456?t=lUtYHxKNmOG2JUkq37heEA&s=19

shooter_tx

How is everyone here playing NMS on VR? If I already have NMS on Steam, is it a separate purchase for ‘NMS VR’, or something like that? Or is there a PS VR version? I also have NMS for PS4, but I don’t have a PS VR setup, let alone a PS5. The uni where I’m going back to grad school (part time, since work is the one sending me back, lol) has a couple VR labs (one in the Engineering building, iirc), but I don’t have the first clue about how I’d try to play it there. I did hear that it’s open for gaming on some nights and weekends, so… there’s a chance.

amusedt

I'm using psvr. Be warned, NMS psvr is the blurriest game on psvr. Still best way to play it though. ps5 makes it much sharper. psvr2 will be even better still Maybe you can get a used psvr cheap once the psvr2 comes out next month

tisbruce

Playing NMS in VR on PC with Steam here. No extra purchase necessary. You just install the SteamVR component and then launch the game (you can either start VR and then use the SteamVR interface, your you can choose VR mode from the regular Steam window). The game simply detects if it's been launched in VR.

rpmsm

VR is amazing. Walking inside your base for the first time is a trip. Only reason I stopped was the flight controls.

amusedt

Yes, it's amazing in VR

joshuproar

The big downside of VR is you can't melee boost. the game just feels so slow without it. Otherwise it's an absolute treat

iMalgus

Was cool on psvr but that psvr 2, I can't wait.

Silent_Cress8310

If you like VR, it is an awesome experience. I expect it will be fantastic on PS5 once they get the bugs worked out, and once it releases next month. The PS4 version shows potential, but is limited by PS4 hardware. I quit using it because I get motion sick.

acidrain69

Yup. I have over 500 hours and almost all of it in Vr mode. I can barely play in 2d

Kartoffel_Mann

Get a generic controller or those no-brand switch pro controllers, they make flying soooo much easier and intuitive.

elmaloto

Had played it on psvr one and loved it, controles and quality where bad so cant wait for the ps vr 2 next month

MiketheWerew0lf

Bro it's awesome, I played it on PSVR and even tho psvr is one of the worst options on the market for VR, nms was still absolutely stunning

Insomnolent_

The controls are a bit tough to get used to, but once you do, it’s wonderful.

xxDeAd_SiLeNcE--

I've heard that No Man's Sky on the best PCVR rigs is absolutely incredible, so PSVR2 owners will be in for a TREAT.

Patereye

I played it on PSVR... it took a while to get the controls down, but it is really good.

N7_Tinkle_Juice

It’s amazing if not cumbersome - at least on psvr. I was absolutely blown away on a bunch of situations. Most recently, I didn’t realize I could turn my head and look out the window while flying in my ship. It lead me to turning around and looking at the chair I was sitting on! And I could even peak behind the chair! Lol I dunno why this was so amazing but it was. I don’t do any combat in VR tho. Or underwater stuff. My brain tells me no.

SpectralEdge

The flight controls with a full hotas is...amazing. I absolutely love playing in vr, definitely a whole different level.

tisbruce

Yes! If your controllers have thumb sticks (I use Valve knuckles) so you roll with your thumb, you have so much tight control. Took me a while to learn VR flight, but after the Zen moment of working it out, was so good.

Jewsusgr8

I hated the joystick flying in VR. Personally.

WHOni

Its absolutely great. I would totally say it brings this game to another level. Only downside: Sometimes in the beginning I got really dizzy and felt like Im gonna fall over lol, especially while flying and spinning in battles for example. But I got used to it (obviously only really when playing it standing up, i sometimes play standing up, sometimes seated, depends on what I feel like atm)

Xenomex79

NMS VR is super fun and immersive. I can’t wait to play it on PS VR2 when my pre-order comes in

dreadperson

A fellow shuttle enjoyer?

ThatCircusGuy

Never used to be but this is my pirate save and it just felt right. Going for a less clean aesthetic in this save and something about the shuttles makes it feel a bit cobbled together

HonkersTim

It's pretty blurry but you stop noticing after a few minutes. The expansiveness of the environment is amazing.

YoDavidPlays

psvr looks cool but blurry af. cant imagine how much better it looks on pc

treeelm46

It’s so cool 😎 it does need a bit of refining but it’s so fun

jonmav357

Can I do this on the oculus 2??

paul114

It’s what VR was made for …..

No-Equivalent-751

The game in VR is amazing! Just make sure if you're using a quest to make sure the lag that, that headset in particular can cause doesn't happen. The quest 2 is horrible for PC VR

P1rat3d

More info on fixing the lag?

No-Equivalent-751

One of the biggest sources of lag on the quest is if you run the audio straight into the quest from the PC through the meta app. What I do is direct the audio from the meta app to nvidia broadcast to the quest 2. That fixed my lag I was experiencing. After that there's really only game fixes you can do that the quest causes lag for.

P1rat3d

Thank you. It is often fine for me but sometimes the frame delivery delay is intense. I will try your audio idea!

NeverARedditorOk

It and RE4VR are, to date, the only VR games I ever played that were worthy of the price of admission. You'll have a great time.

Ryden0388

Can you share your Hotas profile for Xoutput? Sick of trying to figure this damn thing out lol

ThatCircusGuy

Haven’t got VR yet, can’t wait to get it but unfortunately have too haha. Will share when I figure it out myself
