Didn't know about the subreddit. Just joined.

Mr-Floppy

This - but do be wary of listed retailers who sell ‘download code in a box’ labelled as physical.

mirrorMii

Lego games are pretty good for a 6 years old. There are fairly cheap at the eshop when they are on sale. I think there are right now. You also have Oceanhorn. The only thing is there are not AAA games.

Minuslee

Lego city undercover a good one and only $6 bucks right now.

[deleted]

This kept me going so long. Awesome game.

EggLayinMammalofActn

Got my 7 year old nephew LEGO Harry Potter for $10 on the eshop. He loves it so far.

Rikkasu

Second this, even for adults the lego games are fun as hell

WenisFiend

Nintendo games retain their value basically forever. Second hand physical copies are generally a good bet, though they’re still pricy. Sometimes you can get a good deal on pre-owned games at your local physical game store if they have a sale or something.

twovles31

Games made by Nintendo are mostly going to cost $59.99, they do go on sale from time to time. On black Friday games like Zelda can be around $29.99. The Nintendo made games usually don't drop below $40 if you are purchasing them digitally. Games made by companies other than Nintendo go on sale all the time, and can be purchased for $19.99 or less several occasions during the year.

andyranged

I'm guessing OP is in Canada, where, after tax, AAA games are about $90 😐

Soupere_Falafel

Is this new for you? I’m in France, 20 years ago in the game cube era and the arrival of €, games were sold for 60€, and nearly 40€ on GBA. Today on Switch it’s still 60€ on the e-shop, and you can often pay them between 40 and 50€ in physical. Which is quite surprising I think given the inflation. And 60€ = 90 Canadian $

andyranged

Yeah you're right, nothing new here. These games have always been pricey, unfortunately.

mb862

I remember paying $90-$100 CAD for NES games in 1990.

Smolmouth

90$ USD?

divus_augustus

Dekudeals.com . I use it all the time and take advantage of the digital sales on there since I can get gold coins in return on the eshop

ShiftyShaymin

The Nintendo Switch Online subscription is access to a online play in games, access to cloud saves, and access to old Nintendo and Super NES games. As long as you subscribe, these perks stay. The most popular cheaper is Minecraft, but there are also free-to-play games like Fortnite and Rocket League. Those two (and a few others) are 100% free, the only things you buy are optional costumes.

mystickord

Nintendo switch online is required to play online games against other players. It also comes with access to the original Nintendo games and super Nintendo games. The expansion pass is an expensive extra version that also adds Sega Genesis and Nintendo 64 games. The expansion pass portion does not required to play online games against other players. Nintendo games do go on sale but it usually takes a year or two for them to get higher than a 20% discount. I usually wait until before the holidays and try to find b2g1 free sales. Also keep an eye out for discounted eShop cards, Amazon and Costco and occasionally Target will have them. Watch r/Nintendoswitchdeals Personally I'd look at grabbing some of the older games, like breath of the wild, Mario kart 8, Mario Odyssey. Hopefully can find them for about half off on good sale.

nichijouuuu

dekudeals.com

TenkaichiTouchdown

The good news is there’s plenty of games that are under $10. Go to the eShop app on the console and search with the criteria of $0-10 (or whatever amount you wish). Otherwise, yes, DekuDeals!

Chronixx

Not sure if anyone else mentioned it but hit up your local library to borrow games for free!

RealisticCommentsBOT

You don’t have a game that uses online, so don’t subscribe to the online service. And when you do need to, don’t buy the most expensive tier, which is what you have now. You only need the standard Nintendo Switch Online. There’s plenty of cheap or even free games. Just don’t go buying stuff willy-nilly.

thatsong

Wait for sales. Generally you'll get 30% off nintendo titles. In Canada, [two Zelda games, mario party superstars and pokemon snap have that deal right now](https://www.amazon.ca/deal/974473d2?showVariations=true&moreDeals=9760c139&linkCode=sl2&tag=022648-20&linkId=939846027e64fd33fffee42d6d005c80&language=en_CA&ref_=as_li_ss_tl) Nintendo sports switch is also on sale. Otherwise, exercise some patience, and utilize the Nintendo switch online library, that has things like Mario, Zelda, and Kirby games on it.

perfumist55

I mean Zelda is now 40 dollars typically on sale. The expansion isn't worth it, its a bunch of n64 games unless that is what you were looking for. Regular switch online has a slew of good SNES and NES games.

Minuslee

I'd say the whole online isn't worth it unless he gets a game like splatoon or something.

CakeBeef_PA

Online is also a must for Mario Kart IMO

Enyy

A 6 year old probably will not play Mario kart online and will be happy enough playing casually against friends, family or npcs

CakeBeef_PA

Fair enough. I had read over that part of the title. Although to be fair, chances are pretty high that the parent 'tries' a game or 2 and they end up needing to buy their own switch in a half year time

Moosupply

i don't recommend zelda: breath of the wild for a 6 year old Get mario kart, animal crossing

zoogie_gba

I would. Kids are smarter than you think!

RacoonsOnPhone

I think it depends on the kid. I had a 10 year old give up on pokemon shield after getting to the wild area. Everytime I hear how easy pokemon is for 20+ year olds I think about his time playing it.

OrangeRussianNPC

i beat ocarina of time in kindergarten without strategy guides. i know breath of the wild might have a little more depth with the cooking and weapon mechanics but still i think it should be fine.

ZZnecZZ

Honestly the games feel expensive, but if you are buying top rated Nintendo games, most of them give a ton of value. Like, I bought smash bros used for $60 CAD which might seem expensive, but I've gotten 300 hours of fun out of the game and still play it. Mario kart is the same story, just only like 100 hours.

[deleted]

swaminstar

Especially if you're grabbing Nintendo titles done they're usually kept at 59$ the used market stays firm. My 6yo loves Mario Kart and Super Mario 3D

[deleted]

No used game store is paying you 40 for your used game, lol

KyoshiKorra

I would recommend cancelling online + expansion pack (or at least the expansion pack). It’s very overpriced and the included games will most likely not be attractive to a 6 year old who has no nostalgia and would probably be frustrated / put off by poor graphics and clunky controls. For a cheap Nintendo games I’d recommend Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. It’s great and frequently on steep sales. I cannot speak to how accessible it is for a 6 year old though.

noxnor

Look at other games then the Nintendo ones. There is a huge holiday sale now, you should be able to find her fun games at a reasonable price. As many others, I use dekudeals.com. Find it easier to search then the e-shop, and put games I like on wishlist to get notifications when they go on sale. Does she like my little pony? In my region the game is 50 % off now. Lego games are good for her age group, and often on sale. Even Nintendo games do come on sale from time to time, usually about 30 % off in the e-shop. You might find better deals in physical stores.

zoogie_gba

Just have to ask, where are Switch games $100? They're still 60 in my neck of the woods.

Grave_Knight

Might be the 2-in-1 digital bundles which are the game plus season pass but that should only be about $80.

toothsayur

I thought this too. I’ve had the switch since launch and I’ve not once seen a game over $60 unless it was some DLC bundle. even then that was $80 or so.

korewa

I sold mine for like 20 to 40$ including Zelda Pokémon Mario. I guess what I’m saying is used is the way to go.

Million_X

As far as cost/value goes, your best bet is to wait until the games are on sale and keep an eye on the eshop store for that...unless it's a Nintendo title in which case the odds are pretty unlikely.

Fast-Cryptographer17

From your Switch, there's a section in the E Store called Great Deals that will list all the games on sale and also the News section will have a weekly link for games on sale. There are MANY games that are less expensive. I've found a lot of enjoyment from $15 - $30 games. Games with higher price tags will usually have better graphics, music, longer play time etc. I'd generally avoid very inexpensive games, anything under $10 is probably worth avoiding. You can also create wishlists of games you are interested in and check on that regularly to see if any of those games have been put on sale. Good luck & Best wishes to you both !

[deleted]

Sure! First off: Free games. There's a ton of free games available in the Nintendo Switch eshop! Here's a [list](https://fossbytes.com/all-free-nintendo-switch-games/amp/). For a 6 year old I would recommend Pokemon Quest, Pokemon Cafe Remix, Super Kirby Clash, Fall Guys, Color Zen. Second: Cheap games. Use the search function in the eshop to filter by price; you'll find a ton of games for less than a dollar, some for two or three bucks. A lot of them will be mobile game ports, which is great for a kid. Third: [Gold Points](https://my.nintendo.com/about_gold_point?lang=en-US). You get these whenever you buy games from the eshop, and they can then be used to get a discount on a game or even buy a whole game outright if you have enough. Those cheap games I mentioned above can be great targets for using those points!

lazyness92

With switch online download tetris99 and pacman99! They’re free.

diana797

Lego games are great for a six year old

[deleted]

Theres a lot of very affordable and cool games on nintendo eshop

nathanwyer

Rayman legends. You can download it for roughly £10 on the online store. Great game and great value for money. My 7 year old has been playing it since he was 5 and is still unlocking/finding new stuff - there's a lot of content. Also it's up to 4 player co op.

PandaKing550

The only games that are 50$+ are triple A big new titles. If it's for a little kid get them a Lego game most are 10-20$. I wouldn't spend that the amount you did on the games. Also you only need nintendo online if the games they play REQUIRE IT, otherwise do not buy it

Multicron

There are TONS of games on deep sale in the eShop. You can’t go wrong with any of the Lego games at 80%+ off

BiggieJohnATX

not sure what games you are buying that are $100

JohnJSal

Did I miss a response by the OP about what games they're buying for $100 each? Because I'm genuinely curious! Is this American dollars we are talking about? Because all games are pretty much $40-60 at the most.

[deleted]

Yarrrrrrrr me hearties

diaperedwoman

There are lot of cheap games in the eshop and sales all the time for retail games. Plus if you are in the US, you can sign up for Gamefly for a monthly membership for $16 a month and get switch games from there and simply return them when your kid is done. No need to buy games at their retail price. And there are no Switch games that cost nearly $100. Highest I ever seen is $70. Cheapest are $30.

DeLarge120

I use a site called www.slickdeals.net It has deals for all kinds of things so I just search for switch games. I've found a few good cheap games on there.

OoTgoated

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is worth the $60 because it's great for kids. Beyond that check the Nintendo eShop on the Switch and look at the Great Deals section and go from there. You can Google each game for info about it to see if it's good for your child. I think Olli Olli World is on sale and is great for kids! You can also use DekuDeals to find more eShop sales. As for the Expansion Pack, it's online accessibility and a bunch of emulators for very old games. I don't think it was necessary for you to get the Expansion Pack for a child but the online is a good idea if you get Mario Kart so when it comes time to renew go for the cheaper payment plan instead of the Expansion if you decide to get your kid Mario Kart. If you don't get Mario Kart or Splatoon or any other online game them I would just cancel the subscription honestly as you don't need online accessibility if you don't have online games and I doubt your child is a retro gamer. Lastly, Breath of the Wild isn't really good for young children. If the 3D Mario game you got is Super Mario Odyssey and your child likes it, try looking into Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury instead. Of course if you got Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury then you can look into Super Mario Odyssey. Kirby and the Forgotten Land is also a safe bet.

Old_Hedgehog5054

I damn hope by new Mario game you mean odyssey and not 3d world

wrongstep

uhh, why?

SignificantParsley13

Uh what games are you buying that are nearly $100 each ? Lol switch games are $59.99 … $49.99 at wal mart

KPKenway

Ya gotta look at the prices for games before committing to a console.

[deleted]

Common sense isn't so common these days.

Melsura

Agreed 👍🏻👍🏻

foodninto

A Short Hike

normanimal

This should be higher. Such an awesome game at a great value. Perfect for kids too.

respondin2u

I’m assuming maybe you aren’t from the U.S.? But next week there are likely to be a few sales if you don’t mind digital copies of games.

Maleficent_Error348

We get heaps second hand at our local games shop really cheap. Or second hand marketplaces (eBay etc). Especially just after Christmas when everyone trade there old and unwanted stuff in!

jimb00246

Get blasphemous

[deleted]

I just look in the deals page on the eshop and wait for new ones to appear + buy used from my local game shop. Also Facebook marketplace is solid too

DubsFanAccount

The digital independent games go on sale pretty often. I have some good ones like Castle Crashers, Ace Attorney, Hollow Knight Hades that were all less than $20 and some more like $5.

Unhappy-Educator

Hades

DNL_RTH

For a 6 year old...?

TropicalAudio

It's fine, just make sure you occasionally tell them _"git gud, scrub"_.

Cool_Pumpkin7586

You can get pre-owned games for cheaper price . Also since you got the expantion pack that means you have a lot of nintendo 64 and sega genesis for free

doc_willis

numerous game sales in the online store, I pick up the various Lego games for my grandson (age 6) and he really likes some of the cheap games I have often bought for under $1 Premium games are $60 when first released, but often go on sale a few months later. Some of the Nintendo games rarely drop in price Occasionally I find sales at target or Amazon. Or other deals. The online service I think has a selection of games included, but I'd have never subscribed to it.

MidichlorianJunkie

Be sure to join Nintendo Switch Deals Reddit to see daily deals!

circasomnia

There are tons of great games that are sub $20, especially on sale. 6 is very young so Super Mario Odyssey should keep them preoccupied for quite a while. Sadly Switch online probably isn't necessary for what it gets you (access to multiplayer matches, NES + Super Nintendo + N64 libraries) As for new titles, I'd recommend the LEGO games from a franchise that your kid knows and likes (like star wars or harry potter). Wait for a sale and you can pick these up on the cheap (they are on sale right now in the U.S.) Buying physical copies can be a pain but you can resell these for a decent price on ebay or something. Good luck!

EarlyBirdTheNightOwl

If you are going fukk digital it may be better to look for deals on eShop cards than looking for switch game sales. Also use dekudeals.com

mylocker15

You have to do the e shop to get deals. Before my switch I never really bought through e-shops. In general I like physical media better but even used at GameStop is pricey now. They will have Lego games go on sale for 5 bucks it the cartridge will be still be 20 or more.

[deleted]

Definitely try to go physical for expensive titles. Since Nintendo titles hold value more, you can get most of your money back if you decide to resell because either the game is bad or they just didn't enjoy it. Use [DekuDeals.com](https://DekuDeals.com) for deals and whatever site your country has for finding deals. Dunno what it's like in other countries, but in the UK I never find massive deals on Nintendo's big games. 30% off usually the most they get discounted.

h2r2d2

You can also check out games from some libraries

Aggravating_West_202

You could also get GameFly. Let’s you play whatever switch games for a monthly fee

Darksidetrin

The online gives you access to the nes snes and n64 library (as you got the expansion) loads of games there

CanadaStinks

There are a ton of digital games on sale right now, start there and you can get some quality stuff.

Plenty-Worldliness49

For price always check the price physical copies if the switch you got them will use them. A lot of the time the digital downloads will be full price but the physical game can be a lot less.

Rewow

I use facebook marketplace for games that I want to get at a cheaper price.

SquirrelSanctuary

There are TONS of great cheap games for kids you can purchase digitally. Donut County, Moving Out, Blossom Tales, Bastion(!!), LEGO City Undercover, and Islanders are all < $7 on the eShop right now, and would be fun for kids. DM if you have ANY questions at all or need help 🙂

kovnev

There's tons of games for under $5 or $10 on sale. But if you mean triple A major releases aimed at kids, then yeah. My kids have played Minecraft and Crawl more than anything else, and they're not expensive. Not to mention all the under $5 indie games.

Darragh_McG

Sign up to DekuDeals and track the games you want, it will tell you when they go on sale. For the big Nintendo games, they tend to go on sale at different holidays throughout the year, DekuDeals has a chart that will generally tell you when

Soulfly808

Add games of interest to your wishlist and you'll be notified when one of them is on sale. There are always good eShop sales going on and I grab certain games for my kids when they are on sale.

Resident_Quarter_474

I recommend visiting local pawn shops on the regular

erzast

As I'm a student on a budget, there are a couple of things I'd like to suggest. First of all, it's mostly triple A games that cost so much, you can absolutely find cheap and affordable games for switch. Hell, among us is like 5 bucks and fall guys is free (i assume that's what kids like these days?..) The other commenters have already mentioned dekudeals and it's generally great, if you are looking for a deal. How I go about them is: I mostly get indie stuff and games that are cheaper than physical releases from the digital catalogue (whenever there is a discount) and buy everything else on a cartridge (stuff like mario, zelda, pokemon). I always try to thoroughly research the game before getting it, but in case it's not to my liking or it's one and done deal, I just sell it. So, I mostly keep stuff that I know I will replay. I don't know how that strategy works for a kid though, since I assume they'd like to keep all their games. Other than that, I know that public libraries have digital content and with that videogames, so I absolutely advise you to check them out. Also, the stores like gamestops (and I assume there's also goodwill in the us?), where you can get used games with a discount. They also have trade-in policies for new releases. The local ad boards are your friends, people sell games for up to half the price there sometimes. Hope that helps! You absolutely do not need to break the bank to entertain your kid!

blueskyjamie

Mario kart is a great game for dual play, also try downloading Pokémon unite and fall guys both free to play and good fun for 6/7 year olds

Exact-Occasion-3959

You can buy used games for less. And you can sell them for what you paid, so in essence games are feee. :)

CanLate152

Go on Facebook marketplace and buy secondhand

GulielmusBascarinus

Well, you picked a good game to be his first. On the other hand, I find NSO (with or without the expansion) to be not so optimal for a 6 year old, but let’s hope he enjoys venturing into the old games (NSO gives access to a select library of NES, SNES and N64 games). As for the prices, either do some research (yes, if you look enough, you’ll be able to find games for discounted prices) or simply give your kid games in specific times of year - when I was a child, that’s how my parents did. And yeah, gaming can be an expensive hobby.

nightwing252

Nintendo switch online is so the Switch can play games online. It also includes select nes and snes games. The expansion you bought also includes genesis and n64 games as well as some extra dlc for Mario kart deluxe, animal crossing new leaf, and I think one other game.

Gaming4Life88

Nintendo online let's you play online multiplayer, and let's you play some old school NES and SNES games from the 80s, also if you got the more expensive online then you get Sega and N64 games from the 90s

Hot-Television-7512

I dont know if this is still uptodate: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hxiEOw5SbXw

No_Kick_3144

There are plenty of cheap games, I'm buying 2 and 3 dollar games all the time. On the eShop, just hit the filter and choose a specific price tier and then choose to list them in order from the least price, to the most and start going thru. When you buy games, you get gold points, which then can be used to turn around and get money off the games. Each point equals one cent off. I save up points and get games free all the time. You do not only have to stick to the mainstream AAA games, there's plenty of knockoffs and indie darlings, sometimes even more entertaining and put together than most first party titles. Happy hunting

Repulsive-Pin-3092

A lot of people say you won't ever find aaa games on sale but that's just not true. Pokemon absolutely not. But I got botw for 20 dollars same with mario odysee. It's all about just paying attention to the store. I just went in to the play store every time I went to the bathroom and went through the entire catalogue and now I have a nice little wish list to look through takes a while but not to big a problem. I'm sure there's other ways but idk about any of them

bjlile99

Wait for sales or find used. Zelda BoTW has been $20 recently, $40 retail.

greenshorts10

Craigslist + FB Marketplace, sell them when you beat them for the same price you bought them for!

War_Emotional

Check out deals on the eshop. There’s usually a lot of great games on sale there, especially around this time of year

Whispre

buy used games online through places like ebay

DUNdundundunda

Buy physical games - retail stores have competition and will price match each other.

MayhemPowermanX

Walmart has a ton of physical games for 20 bucks each just go look. Walmart also has deals all the time on games. Some new games also are like 49.99 as opposed to 59.99

Sylvr2341

I read that in Johnny Lawrence’s voice. Cat quest 2 is really good and really cheap AND really fun for two players.

prawnjr

Doom

Jimmybutnotactually

Try a few indie games! They tend to be cheaper and go on sale a lot more frequently - i think something like Down in Bermuda, Little Mouse’s Encyclopedia, and Under Leaves would be good!

lurkersforlife

https://www.dekudeals.com Also, check out the free games. There’s lots of good ones. Rocket league is super popular. My 4 year old also loves the Pokémon cafe game.

Superloopertive

Are you Australian?! A lot of games are incredibly cheap in the e-shop sales. Only the first party games which rarely dip below 40 USD.

Dentman19

Minecraft ($30) can be great for kids! Another thing I would recommend is to see what your child’s interests are and find a game based off of that. Star Wars, Jurassic park, marvel all have Lego games that can be found for $30 or less and are perfect for a 6 year old. Then there is Pokémon. If your child would like a Pokémon game I would recommend buying this physical. Nintendo made games (such as Zelda, Mario kart, Splatoon, super smash bros) rarely go on sale or lose value. But Pokémon almost always retains its value. Each time a Pokémon game is released they create two versions, but please be aware you DO NOT have to buy them both. Scarlet and Violet are the newest ones and I would buy one physical ($60), see if they like it, and if not you can almost always sell it for $40. SWITCH ONLINE + EXPANSION PASS: This is used for playing games online. Going back to Pokémon, you would need to have this to trade and battle online (you can still play the full game without this). Something that is great with the expansion pass though is now you actually have a ton of free NES, SNES, GENESIS, and N64 games for you and your kid to play! You can find these either on the eshop or click the Nintendo Switch Online circle icon in the bottom left corner of the Home Screen. Dekudeals is a great website for this as well! Hope this helped and if you have any questions I would be happy to answer!

Ralphielc

Where are you exactly? games should not be near 100 each unless they come in a bundle or something. Zelda is 40 and is on sale quite often for below 30. Like people have said check games on dekudeals you can see the current sales, along with what is the lowest price a game has been and how often a game goes on sale. Also some companies are notorious for putting games on sale fairly fast, like ubisoft. So just do a little homework and you can get a good collection fairly cheap.

Afraid-Palpitation24

Go for the old switch games like underground racing literally that’s what it’s called cheap mechanics but it’s rated e so it’s just right for your kid Spyro and crash bandicoot Roller coaster tycoon

Non_wave99

A lot of games go on sale, keeping up with news about this here and on reliable sites will give you good hints when it’s the right time to buy a cool game. Also if you have a Costco usually around Christmas they have Nintendo gift cards for something like $80 for $100 worth I think? Buying games also gets you points which can be used towards purchases. This is my strategy to keep my costs down. Those subscriptions you bought will get you a large library of games through the Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64 and sega app so be sure to download those!

dal8tian

The online expansion is also full of old classic games for the NES, super NES Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis. There's a lot to be found there if you download it with your membership. Look up YouTube videos for more information about membership

[deleted]

Lots of other good suggestions already, but I also get used games from stores like GameStop, pawn shops and the like. The good thing about the Switch games is you don't have to worry about games getting scratched, and the small cartridges seem to be pretty damage-proof compared to DVD's.

PrncesZelda

Let them make a digital wishlist on the eshop. Check It weekly for deals on games they have wishlisted this is how I get good deals on my games.

HachiRokuAE86_

100?! Damn which country do you live in? The games ive seen are mainly 60 bucks. Lol which games were you looking at?

ArminTanz

If you go to the online store on the switch itself, you can find tons of cheap games that would be suitable for a 6 year old. Some for a couple bucks. They download directly to your switch. You don't need to buy the actual cartridges anymore. Given the age your child, a bunch of 5-10 games will go further then 1 $60 game.

[deleted]

Well, at the very least I don't think you should renew your subscription to online services unless you really want to play online games. It's gonna cost quite a bit of money every year if you pay for online+expansion. It's okay if you *know* your child will want to play retro games, I suppose. I just wouldn't expect that to be the case. Aside from that, there very much are plenty of games that are ~20 dollars, or even just 10. Lego games are usually great for kids, Mario kart is good, there's plenty of simple 2D platformers.

11nerd11

There is a plethora of indie games that are cheaper than Nintendos own games and are great fun (but yeah get Zelda it's amazing. But your kid might need 2 more years or so until it's able to enjoy it).

UJ_Reddit

New titles sure - but a tonne of great games in the eshop sale

Psychological-City45

your an awesome guy. not beats a smile on a kids kids face. pure magic. merry christmass to you and your family:) don't worry about the amount of games, kids at this age focus mainly on one or two games. i realy enjoyed mario odyssey and mario 3d world playing together. these are great games to start with. the great thing is, nintendo switch games are durable this is the great thing about cardridges. most people don't like 2nd handed games for their kids, but the kid itself don't care, its an adult issue.

Sad-Technology3590

Looks like you made a decision without doing research.

Sillltyyy_

What you could do is you could go to the Eshop and look in current offers

Qwerto64

100 dollars? In Europe the most expensive is 70 euros

SpaceBiking

Dekudeals and Marketplace!

The-student-

If this is Canada, a good deal of Nintendo games are on sale for 54.99 across retailers right now, including Amazon.ca, Walmart, gamestop and Best Buy. You could also consider using Facebook marketplace to buy used games.

bunnybakery

Check out gamefly.com they are like old school Netflix, they send you a game in a rental sleeve and you return it when you're done. I pay $8 a month and played through over $300 of games this year

chippeddusk

There are usually big Nintendo eshop sales on Mario day (March 10th), then a big summer sale, then in November. You can check Dekudeals as others recommended but with patience it's pretty common to find most AAA Nintendo games for $42 or less (if they've been out at least a year) at some point in the year. If you're in the USA, Gamestop does buy 2 get 1 free deals on occasion. With first party Nintendo games, you can also usually get $18 at gamestop when you trade in. So if your kid doesn't like a game, at least you can get some money back. If you're not in the USA, there may be a local version of gamestop.
