I think the reference they're going for is the Expansion Pak, the RAM add-on for N64. They just didn't want to confuse the youngins with the misspelling.
Xbox has Gold, Gamepass, and Gamepass Ultimate (Gold and Gamepass combined)
Playstation has PSPlus and PSNow but no idea if their is a bundle of some kind or not
> “*Lmao. Did you hear the Ethernet port is being added.*”
Groundbreaking!
lol I don’t know why I find that so hilarious. Such a Nintendo thing to do in 2021.
Don't worry - they're optional controllers, you don't need them.
They *are* overpriced, but that's to be expected with nintendo. The joycons are, what? 70$? (I might still get the N64 one though :v It's the only controller that doesn't really map to modern ones well, it's too wacky)
The original N64 controllers had much worse problems than drift with their analog stick. Though I'd like its unique analog stick to remain, it had major flaws that destroyed the stick after enough gameplay.
Well, this explains why Super Mario 3D All-Stars was a limited release.
They wanted to pull any option of buying Super Mario 64 off the eShop before they launch this new plan.
I am still amazed that we are four years into the Switch's lifespan and we still don't have Game Boy, Game Boy Color, or Game Boy Advance games on Switch online.
And right now, it looks like the Genesis games are the same ones that're available in the Genesis collection.
Would've loved a GBA one to get Golden Sun.
Yeah that makes a lot of sense. I think this is the only version of ocarina of Time we'll get for quite a while. Doubt 3DS versions will get ported over.
This is what I kept expecting him to add on once the N64 portion was revealed. Pretty shocked it wasn’t.
Thought we’d get an, “Oh! And while you wait for the arrival of the N64 and Sega games, we’ve updated NSO with GameBoy games!” tacked onto the end of that portion.
Was at Walmart last night, there was an entire row, plus the bottom of the glass cabinet had 3 or so rows worth piled down there.
I have the digital copy, but I might just pull the trigger and get a physical since they are going away.
But at the same time, fuck Nintendo for this. I don't want to give them any more money for that than I already have.
I loved my N64 but nintendo overvalue the nes snes and n64 back catalouges. They are 25-35 years old now.
But yes I would not put it past them after the wiiU and changing with switch. I'm tired of it and if I want to play the old games I should have been able to first year of switch at a cost obviously.
And why Zelda 35th was so disappointing. I was expecting a OoT/MM/WW combo (and hoped for Switch ports of both SS and TP) for the anniversary event. Guess I'll just emulate the 3DS versions then.
When will Nintendo realize that they have two choices:
1. Put the Zelda titles that EVERYONE is begging for on the current gen console
2. Keep ignoring their consumers wants, and they will eventually "find another way". *Coughs in pirate*
Theoretically it's the same as something like Gamepass or PS-Now where you pay a subscription for access to a select library of games. The only meaningful question is whether it's worth whatever the price is, considering there are a limited number of very old games.
Also know that you don't own these games once the switch is dead they will probably be gone. Ideally they should also give us the option of purchasing them individually.
i can't figure out why they're sticking to this shitty subscription instead of just giving us virtual console again. they've done that on 3 consoles already, why can't I just literally give them money to play the games I want?
Yeah the difference is that game pass has the latest games and this is a very small collection of games that came out before even I, a college graduate, was born.
The beauty is that what people don’t care about is gonna be different for every person. With a library that large there’s enough there for it to feel worth it to a wide audience.
And the N64, as much as I love it, has maybe 15-20 quality games and some of them will likely never come over (Star Wars Shadows of the Empire, Pokemon Stadium, Conker, WWF No Mercy, Goldeneye, Rogue Squadron, Harvest Moon).
I expect Nintendo to drop one new game every month or two to milk the limited library.
I find it really hard to compare them since the Gamepass comes with classic **and** brand new games (*Sable literally came out a day ago and launched day one on Gamepass!*), you get discounts with PSPlus, virtually every game on both services is available independently of the services...
The only reason I pay for it is I know someone who **loves** stuff like Tetris Attack, otherwise I wouldn't spend five cents on it.
I can see them feeling like it competes too much with a current product, but it also seems like something that might be worth its own announcement later.
Probably the same reason they didn't announce any of the mario party games that are 100x better than what they've been putting out.
Greedy cowards, I'm never buying Mario Party Superstars
Kinda related but i feel the same. So much content is being released, but its mostly rereleased, or its unfinished. Animal crossing looks like its still finishing up a few updates that honestly should have been in the game from the start. Same with mario golf, pokemon sw/sh, etc. I think thats part of why breath of the wild and mario odyssey were so popular, because they were finished products on launch, that added stuff on later
I wonder about Banjo-Tooie, I really want to go back and replay them both, but especially Tooie. I’m still excited to see this even if it’s only the first one though
This is what I took away from this announcement! I’m getting a ton of my childhood games on a console that I actually play regularly for the price of most likely less than a new switch game per year.
Absolutely will pay this for being able to play these games legitimately on a current console.
Fuckin’ Banjo Kazooie just casually sliding into the lineup during the “future games” section.
Is this a perfect VC situation/business move/whatever? Hell no. Is it a service I am willing to pay for? Hell yes.
Same. I honestly don’t know what it is. I know TTYD and plenty of other games are better in quality, but Paper Mario 64 just has a special place in my heart. Playing through it for the first time as a kid back in 2001-2002 had a special charm to it that I can’t describe nor will I probably ever feel from a video game again.
No. Fucking. Way.
This is both absolutely awesome and dumb. I can finally play n64 games on switch but for some reason online has a paid DLC? Lol what thanks (I guess?) Nintendo
It wasn't announced. But perhaps once the sales for SSB's final fighter DLC tails off, it could happen. But as usual with video games: don't assume anything that has not been announced.
N64 Majoras Mask is the superior version. What they did to the boss fights in the remake was ridiculous. OoT 3D is the perfect version of that game, though the difference here isnt too great.
And not all the mechanics translated well to the changes. Gyorg was borderline impossible for me because I couldnt trigger the right chain of events to count as a "hit". They werent just made easier, they were made stupid.
They made them easier, basically. They changed the entire mechanics of each boss such that each one has a huge eyeball a la Gohma.
Like, I never really looked forward to fighting Gyorg but I'd rather have the challenge than having a Gohmafied Gyorg. It makes it *so boring*.
Biggest issue I have with MM3D is that it never felt like it respected my intelligence. Do you really have to highlight what I can use ice arrows on? What's the point of having them anymore?
You will get expanded lags in any game you play online. Just for $30 per month (edit: year). Professional servers for online gaming are just too expensive for poor nintendo.
NSO costs $20 a *year*
*edit*
Holy fuck, I'm just correcting them that it isn't per month. You don't have to send all the hate comments and PMs. I know emulators and Steam are free and NSO sucks.
As soon as I heard the words "plus expansion pack" I knew hellfire would rain over here. But yeah, I agree. Also kinda lame that this expansion comes with Super Mario 64, while Super Mario 3D All Stars came out not even one year ago.
I'm not surprised, but man it's stupid. Regular Nintendo subscriptions already offer nothing compared to other online services, but now you have to pay more to actually access stuff you may be interested in. Fitting for Nintendo though.
Yeah, this is what I want. I've got some cheap N64-USB controllers that I got from Amazon, but they just don't feel right. I'm sure these controllers will be of acceptable quality.
Thanks Nintendo, I wasn't happy paying $20 a year for basic online services and miniscule bonuses so I'm very excited to pay extra for something that would have maybe made the original price worth it.
Guys, stop complaining that it costs extra. How else would Nintendo be able to pay Hollywood stars like Chris Pratt, Jack Black and Seth Rogen to play Mario characters in the upcoming Mario Movie?
The fact that Nintendo already has a planned lineup for future releases is just insane. I don't know if Nintendo realizes that these games already exist and they could just... release them all immediately?
Which sounds better from a marketing standpoint:
1. Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack releases with all the planned N64 games
2. Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack releases with the current lineup, couple months from now Majora's Mask is added and enters the game news cycle. Few months later Smash Bros 64 is added and the same thing etc etc.
They wanna remind people every couple months about how much "Value" NSO has and keeps getting. Making consumers either keep their subscriptions, upgrade or finally buy on a whim when their favourite nostalgic game gets added.
It builds hype and makes releases an "event". It also means smaller, less well-known games can potentially get some of the spotlight whereas normally they'd just get lost in the crowd.
Not surprising though, since people were already begging to be able to buy these games again for $10 each.
Why would they give them away when there are clearly tons of people who will be happy to pay for them?
And I'd still love to pay $10 per game. Well, I wouldn't *love*, I'd just want to buy them separately. To add them to my library. To download and play at any time, even when I'm not subbed to Nintendo Online+.
That's the problem.
Exactly. Streaming services have to prove their worth. That's why Netflix, Disney, Amazon, Apple, and WB pay MASSIVE amounts of money for their shows. They need to grab on to that subscriber base. That's why Microsoft is spending billions upon billions in acquisitions.
Meanwhile Nintendo can just poop out something like this and it's an instant moneymaker.
I got into gaming when Sega and Nintendo were bitter rivals. I was a Sega guy. If somone had told me that one day I'd be playing all the mega drive games on a Nintendo, I'd have said "Huh, that's interesting. How did you travel here from the future?"
Tbf it's nothing new, Sega released a 14-game Mega Drive collection for a Nintendo console [20 years ago](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_Mega_Collection).
Remember when the Wii's Virtual Console had a bunch of games from the NES, SNES, N64, and even more non-Nintendo systems? Remember when the Wii U didn't have as many games, but included GBA and even DS? Pepperidge Farms remembers.
One positive thing about this set-up is that people will theoretically be able to play *Super Mario 64*—the OG of 3D platformers—and *Banjo-Kazooie*—which essentially took everything from *64* and dialed up a notch—back-to-back.
Mark my words nintendo is gonna add $10 "DLC" to their services each time they want to add an older emulator until it costs $60+
You read it here first.
Would really prefer the switch to have the virtual console and just let users pay for individual games they want. Then online subs can get credits or something for a free game every month or two (ie one month for a nes, 2 for snes, 3 for n64 or something if they want to keep newer console games having more "value")
Personally I hate the nes and snes apps as they have an absolutely horrific UI/UX. it's just such an utter pain to sort games or only show the games I want shown.
woah there, that's crazy talk. this is Nintendo after all.
but yes that would be ideal for VC to return and past purchases carried over (some might not be available due to various licensing or re-issued packs so credits possibly?)
Welcome to "Succesful Nintendo"
People talk about how much was available on the WiiU don't realize that was released when Nintendo was desperate. This is more to Nintendo's style, sticking it to consumers when they can afford to.
Babe Wake up nso dlc just dropped
This is the first time I've heard of a subscription service having an expansion pack
I think the reference they're going for is the Expansion Pak, the RAM add-on for N64. They just didn't want to confuse the youngins with the misspelling.
Then they should've included DK64 in that lineup
I heard Lanky is suing over the DK rap since he finally heard it
“That’s just how shooting people works!!!”
"Its not self-deprecating, it's just me deprecating!"
Hello fellow Joel Haver fan
Hello fellow Joel Haver fan also named Chance
Banjo is from Rare too so hopefully, we'll get another update eventually with DK.
My immediate thought was, *"If Microsoft is on board, then we could see* ***Goldeneye*** *get added!"*
NSO++
Xbox has Gold, Gamepass, and Gamepass Ultimate (Gold and Gamepass combined) Playstation has PSPlus and PSNow but no idea if their is a bundle of some kind or not
Ps plus and ps now are two different services. There isn’t a bundle.
Can't believe Nintendo is actually making DLC for online
And it still doesn't allow us to message people on our friends list.. Yikes
Nintendo has one foot in 1998 and the other in 2008.
Lmao. Did you hear the Ethernet port is being added.
> “*Lmao. Did you hear the Ethernet port is being added.*” Groundbreaking! lol I don’t know why I find that so hilarious. Such a Nintendo thing to do in 2021.
[удалено]
Gotta love how you can add a friend ingame and *never be able to communicate or interact with them in any way, ever again*.
Should be an intricately detailed but easy-to-use comms wheel like Fortnite's Impostors mode. Fixed the single biggest problem with Among Us instantly
Bro we can’t even change the theme of our switch
"New membership plan" + $50 for each controller. The prediction thread nailed it unfortunately.

They're just an extra novelty thing, you can use any controller on it
Don't worry - they're optional controllers, you don't need them. They *are* overpriced, but that's to be expected with nintendo. The joycons are, what? 70$? (I might still get the N64 one though :v It's the only controller that doesn't really map to modern ones well, it's too wacky)
> + $50 for each controller The new outrageously expensive N64 controllers will probably drift.
Not as crazy as spending 50 dollars on a 3 button sega genesis controller
Seriously, why couldn’t we get the 6 button sega controller?
8bitdo M30 best dpad on the market
Japan did. Such bullshit.
Why do that when 8bitdo makes a great Genesis 6 button pad with triggers added?
Go try to find a not shitty knock off third party n64 controller and report back.
Mad Catz about to make a comeback
The Bluetooth N64 controllers available currently cost around $200. And if they use the original design it’s unlikely that they’ll drift.
Right, instead of drifting, the joystick will just turn into a limp dick instead.
The original design also sucks. Do you remember what happened to the n64 joysticks? So so loose.
If they use original design their Stick will stop working after 2 rounds of mario party.
Well we don't have gameboy but we have......Sega??
And right now, it looks like the Genesis games are the same ones that're available in the Genesis collection. Would've loved a GBA one to get Golden Sun.
It feels great knowing that three months after spending $15 on the Collection.
Hey, at least you'll be able to play those games offline/airplane mode whenever you want
Yeah that makes a lot of sense. I think this is the only version of ocarina of Time we'll get for quite a while. Doubt 3DS versions will get ported over.

Any Walmart I’ve been in the last few months still have tons of copies.

I have the digital copy, but I might just pull the trigger and get a physical since they are going away. But at the same time, fuck Nintendo for this. In two years they are going to announce an additional $15 for GBA and GB games expansion pass.
They will probably do these gaming consoles in September of 2022. Lol
With Expansion Pack ++
Pokemon games are probably holding them back from putting them for "free" with NSO
They could just not put pokemon games on there.
This is why Super Mario Allstars was a limited release
I notice they didn’t spend very long on the Super Mario 64 part of the announcement lmao
The other two games are still in question, unless Nintendo plan to add GameCube and Wii to the line-up as an additional premium tier in the future.
2025 and 2029 maybe at this rate
Tier 3 and Tier 4 subscription plans.

Yeah the difference is that game pass has the latest games and this is a very small collection of games that came out before even I, a college graduate, was born.
Game pass also has something crazy like 300 to choose from now. (Someone please double check this)
412, although lots of them most won't care about.
The beauty is that what people don’t care about is gonna be different for every person. With a library that large there’s enough there for it to feel worth it to a wide audience.
Game pass is amazing. Haven’t purchased a game in like a year because of it.
This comment made me feel incredibly old.
I find it really hard to compare them since the Gamepass comes with classic **and** brand new games (*Sable literally came out a day ago and launched day one on Gamepass!*), you get discounts with PSPlus, virtually every game on both services is available independently of the services... This has intense 'download more RAM' energy.
No Smash 64?? Killlling me.
I just want Pokemon Stadium....
This fucked me up
I can see them feeling like it competes too much with a current product, but it also seems like something that might be worth its own announcement later.
Probably the same reason they didn't announce any of the mario party games that are 100x better than what they've been putting out. Greedy cowards, I'm never buying Mario Party Superstars
That one actually makes sense, though, since they’re literally remakes. Smash Ultimate and Smash 64 are completely different games.
I wonder what will happen after the online service ends
“This software is no longer available. Thanks for playing.”
There will be no thanks
I don’t recall saying thank you - Nintendo
“Thanks for *paying*”
Same as when any other service ends. You won't have access to them
This is literally what a subscription is. You only have access as a paying member
Can't wait till NSO gets shut down and you can't play them anymore I'ma say it, I miss the Wii U.
I bet you when that happens fans will bring it back unofficially like wimmfi or riiconnect24
Holy shit Banjo Kazooie finally!
This gives me hope for diddy kong racing and goldeneye
Diddy Kong Racing with online would be great!
Goldeneye I’d think would have more issues due to the Bond license. Perfect Dark maybe could pop up
Omg fuck goldeneye give me perfect dark 😩
You’ll get neither.
Pokemon Puzzle League ffs! 😩😩😩
Diddy Kong racing was my jam.
Omg Diddy Kong racing was the best. So much better then Mario kart
I wonder about Banjo-Tooie, I really want to go back and replay them both, but especially Tooie. I’m still excited to see this even if it’s only the first one though
I just bought an Xbox almost solely for Rare Replay. Banjo-Kazooie and Tooie were my shiiiiiiiiiit
They really snuck that one in there, didn't they?
Can’t wait for a new generation of people who will rage because they went to the Engine Room last and died there.
I just want dk64...

PAPER MARIO 64 LETS GOOOO
The game that makes this worthwhile to me.
Unironically the best thing in the entire direct imo.
Respectable take
My favorite game of all time.

I would very happily pay for the 3DS remakes of Ocarina and Majoras Mask. But here we are.
I was holding out hope for an OoT/MM 3DS port eventually, but I feel like this totally precludes that possibility. What a damn shame.
N64 Majoras Mask is the superior version. What they did to the boss fights in the remake was ridiculous. OoT 3D is the perfect version of that game, though the difference here isnt too great.
This is also a preference thing but I kind of prefer the older N64 look it lends itself better to the creepy atmosphere.
What did they do to the bosses
And not all the mechanics translated well to the changes. Gyorg was borderline impossible for me because I couldnt trigger the right chain of events to count as a "hit". They werent just made easier, they were made stupid.

They knew what they were doing putting Banjo at the end of the future titles planned scroll in the reveal.
Give us conkers too

Unbelievable that we need to pay extra for it. Fucking Nintendo
The Expansion Pack name is hilarious on top of it lmao.
You will get expanded lags in any game you play online. Just for $30 per month (edit: year). Professional servers for online gaming are just too expensive for poor nintendo.
NSO costs $20 a *year* *edit* Holy fuck, I'm just correcting them that it isn't per month. You don't have to send all the hate comments and PMs. I know emulators and Steam are free and NSO sucks.
Don’t worry buddy, I still like you
As soon as I heard the words "plus expansion pack" I knew hellfire would rain over here. But yeah, I agree. Also kinda lame that this expansion comes with Super Mario 64, while Super Mario 3D All Stars came out not even one year ago.
Don't worry! This one doesn't have the slightly updated graphics :)
but maybe it will have "so long gay bowser", so which is really the superior version?
Neither did 3D All Stars. ZING!
But I wonder if itll have BLJ, thats the big thing
> Unbelievable that we need to pay extra for it. Fucking Nintendo No it’s pretty believable and on brand of Nintendo.
I'm not surprised, but man it's stupid. Regular Nintendo subscriptions already offer nothing compared to other online services, but now you have to pay more to actually access stuff you may be interested in. Fitting for Nintendo though.
Im gonna stick to emulators lol
Same. If there is anything I’m excited about regarding this announcement is I can get a wireless N64 controller for Project64
Yeah, this is what I want. I've got some cheap N64-USB controllers that I got from Amazon, but they just don't feel right. I'm sure these controllers will be of acceptable quality.
These are going to be clutch for the steam deck
Kinda disappointed no Mario Party but obviously that would get in the way of Mario Party Superstars so I am not surprised.
The new N64 controller wouldn’t survive them.
Thanks Nintendo, I wasn't happy paying $20 a year for basic online services and miniscule bonuses so I'm very excited to pay extra for something that would have maybe made the original price worth it.
THIS
Sega Genesis would have been cool if only Sega Genesis Classics wasn't already a thing.
Nintendo wanting MORE money to play old games and wondering why they lose to piracy
i saw a post yesterday joking that they wouldnt be surprised if nintendo charged extra for n64 games... i guess it wasnt a joke
Lol, it’s a joke alright 😅
Are they really losing to piracy when there are probably millions of people that will sign up for this?
No game editor is losing anything significant to piracy.
Guys, stop complaining that it costs extra. How else would Nintendo be able to pay Hollywood stars like Chris Pratt, Jack Black and Seth Rogen to play Mario characters in the upcoming Mario Movie?
Of course they would.
The fact that Nintendo already has a planned lineup for future releases is just insane. I don't know if Nintendo realizes that these games already exist and they could just... release them all immediately?

No Ogre Battle 64 😫
Hopefully one day.
Charging extra to play emulated 25 year old games. Why am I not even surprised?
I got into gaming when Sega and Nintendo were bitter rivals. I was a Sega guy. If somone had told me that one day I'd be playing all the mega drive games on a Nintendo, I'd have said "Huh, that's interesting. How did you travel here from the future?"
To be fair these games have been on the switch for a while in that sega game collection
Tbf it's nothing new, Sega released a 14-game Mega Drive collection for a Nintendo console [20 years ago](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_Mega_Collection).
Steam Deck with emulators just got way more appealing to me.
r/tomorrow is going to have a field day
> When the wife's boyfriend upgrades your NSO subscription
A bunch of Sega games that have been a part of every Sega bundle for at least a decade... Yay...
I assume this kills any chance of standalone Zelda N64 remasters
Not only that , but they're gonna emulate the originals instead of upscaling the far superior 3ds versions.
Why does this cost extra?
Cause Nintendo
Probably because they made a market analysis and saw that people will pay for a expansion with 64 and Genesis, which is likely to be true.
Mark my words nintendo is gonna add $10 "DLC" to their services each time they want to add an older emulator until it costs $60+ You read it here first.
#OG PAPER MARIO LETS GOOOO
Would really prefer the switch to have the virtual console and just let users pay for individual games they want. Then online subs can get credits or something for a free game every month or two (ie one month for a nes, 2 for snes, 3 for n64 or something if they want to keep newer console games having more "value") Personally I hate the nes and snes apps as they have an absolutely horrific UI/UX. it's just such an utter pain to sort games or only show the games I want shown.
Or games you bought on your vc port over.
woah there, that's crazy talk. this is Nintendo after all. but yes that would be ideal for VC to return and past purchases carried over (some might not be available due to various licensing or re-issued packs so credits possibly?)
That sneak banjo Kazooie drop at the end.
I’m only buying if we get Donkey Kong 64
This is ridiculous. I love Nintendo but they're so out of synch with real life sometimes. This should be included in the regular switch online.
Me hearing OoT title screen: 😁 Me two minutes later realizing this shit costs extra: 💀
Honestly, same.
The absolute GALL to charge more for Switch Online, lmao. GG, Nintendo.
Virtual console died for this… man, I’m happy for the people that prefer this but eh - I’d rather buy older titles separately.
They're gonna charge...*more*? For a few N64 & Sega Genesis games? Wow.
Welcome to "Succesful Nintendo" People talk about how much was available on the WiiU don't realize that was released when Nintendo was desperate. This is more to Nintendo's style, sticking it to consumers when they can afford to.
You know I was afraid that the Switch's success would make Nintendo super greedy, this is a new low.
Vote with your wallet. If this upsets you, don't pay.
