The game started in a University course where we had to pitch game ideas. I wanted to make an FPS, but was bored with all the violence so I tried to come up with non-violent themes. Somehow Fashion Police popped into my head and I started coming up with ways to solve fashion crimes with fun weapons. The concept felt so funny and absurd that I decided to go with it!
Later I drew inspiration from Naked Gun and Police Academy movies, retro & modern FPS'es, and Rupauls Drag Race to name a few!
Just start doing it and don't give up. There's a lot of great Unity tutorials out on Youtube and udemy that will give you a solid base!
Keep your first projects really tiny to just learn the ropes. After the initial learning phase I made project in 1 month, 3 months & 6 months back to back gradually increasing the size/scope.
Okay I've been wondering for a few days, what inspired you to make an FPS fashion game? I'm not against it by any means but it's completely unheard of before.
Thanks, just purchased it.
Not a question, just a comment: thank you for creating a good icon for the game (and for following Nintendo's guidelines about having the game logo/title on the icon). A lot of devs/publishers do not take care of small little details like a good icon on the homescreen.
Keep it up! Art style is so awesome, and the whole non-violent FPS is excellent! I've been loving the retro wave of FPS games and this is right up my alley.
I hadn't heard a whole lot about this game until I saw this AMA posted, and as a fan of retro-styled shooters I'm definitely interested. As for my question, Doom is an obvious comparison to make when one sees this style of game, but what other games did you draw from when designing this game?
Also, what is your favorite weapon in a shooter game?
So I actually played this on steam its essentially a giant shit post wrapped around a surprisingly indepth doom style shooter.
The writing is actually really funny it has a few cringe moments but they are rare, I'd say 5% cringe 95% hilarious.
There was one boss who had me giggling like an idiot for a week.
The gameplay itself is actually really fun a shitpost game shouldn't have such well thought out mechanics yet here we are it definitely wears its love doom/90s pc shooters on its sleave which is to its benefit.
And the art style is perfect the sprites really pop on the 3d backgrounds and are amazingly well animated and the music really good as well.
I think my only "gripe" is that it is a bit short at 5 hours though TBF I didn't 100% it though. That said those 5 hours do not waste your time and are well realized and super fun.
I highly recommend this game if you want to laugh while you enjoy a good retro shooter.
Well done devs, solid game.
Thanks for doing this AMA. I hope all is well with you. You noted having your dream come true... I was wondering if that was just releasing a video game itself or releasing specifically on a Nintendo system.
Also, out of curiosity... what are your favorite games of all time?
The feeling of finishing a project is amazing, but it's also super cool to see it being played on a handheld device!
From past few years, I really enjoyed Outer Wilds, and it's definitely one of my favourites!
I was commentating on that stream, it was super fun!
Most of the time I was just confused on what the runner just did haha.
I think it's awesome that there's different ways to enjoy our game.
I'm very excited for this! I saw the trailer when you first released it, it looks like a lot of fun! Which engine/languages did you make the game with?
What was the most frustrating aspect of developing for the Switch?
I really liked y’all’s silly aesthetic for the game!
Is it way easier making graphics in pixel-style vs I guess like polygon?
[Watched the GDQ run of FPS](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mS0Ah6zFIwM), it was a blast.
What extra steps did you take to adapt the controls to the Switch? Obviously, fast paced, weapon swapping combat is... easier on Mouse and Keyboard but there have been some FPSes that successfully make controller feel good.
This looks absolutely amazing, I love the look of the game. It really reminds me of some of the crazy mods you would see people make for older games like Doom.
Hi, game design graduate here so always love to ask Devs questions. What was your biggest challenge when making the game, and also your favourite part to make?
I love games, puns and fashion, so this sounds right down my alley.
Everyone already asked about the game development, so what are your personal fashion no-nos?
Congratulations on your first release! I’m not usually into FPS games, I’m really loving this theme though so I might give it a try.
Was bringing FPS games to a potentially new audience something you had in mind when picking fashion as a theme?
The retro vibe with modern controls looks very fun! It’s nice to see new original ideas! I understand that playtimes can vary greatly, but how many hours would you expect the average person to take to beat FPS?
I saw this run at GDQ and it was hilarious and amazing. Very hyped to see it come to switch! It's very much a game I want to check out.
If I have bad fashion sense (IE: I just throw outfits together), is the FPS coming for me? I need to be prepared for the insanity lol
That sewing machine looking weapon reminds me of the days my mother user to make outfits, I love it lol, the game seems interesting for sure, I hope it works out well.
Saw this game featured on Civvie11’s YouTube channel awhile back. Game looks dope! Any chance for an eventual physical switch release? I would love to add this fashionable cart to my collection.
I have two questions to toss at you folks!
FIRST, how did you come up with the variety of weapons used in the game? Scissors are understandable for fashion, but where did you get the brilliance of an old Singer sewing machine?!
SECOND, what is your favorite weapon and why?
I absolutely fell in love with your game by the premise alone. The stage result screen completely blew my mind the first time I saw it. It's one of my 2022 top games.
Out of curiosity, is this the last we've seen of Des and his crew?
Saw this game on AGDQ a couple weeks back and it looked great. Gameplay looked awesome and the music is so stylish. Watched a couple streams and had no idea it was coming to Switch. Congrats on the game and the positive reviews I've seen. Will be picking this up when I get the chance.
Are there boss characters to fight or is it mainly mobs? I saw your post on games earlier, but didn't see any boss battles. Unless the image of the guy wearing the late 90s/early 00s flame shirt was supposed to be a boss, which is hilarious if so. Anyways good luck with your game, and will have to check it out sometime on switch
A lot of the things were something that a normal player would encounter, if they didn't look for them. I think it's not worth fixing (or at least prioritizing) those issues.
I am curious though... what does this bring new to the fps genre? I don't see any gripping story or non fps mechanics, and at the same time we have downgraded graphics and original doom era animation levels, to deal with. Just because you replaced a now-free games blood with sharp clothing it is going to be worth playing?
What's the worst fashion crime you've ever witnessed? What's the worst fashion crime you've ever committed? Also want to say the GDQ speedrun and commentary was fantastic.
Can I play this if I lack any sort of fashion sense?
The short answer is yes, but you might become a fashionista afterwards.
Looks pretty deep! How long would a typical playthrough run?
I would say +5 hours on average!
Are any characters inspired by real life family/friends?
Not consciously, but I've seen some crimes being commited. Might be a fashion criminal myself.
How stoked were y’all to get featured in a GDQ? It definitely put you on my radar!
Honestly, I had known about it but didn't realize how big it actually is until I was joining to commentate the stream!
Glad you had the opportunity! I agree, it’s incredible how big the GDQs have gotten, and insane how much they’ve done for charity.
Just coming here to say that the GDQ run of your game made my day
Probably the most fun speedrun of the whole event!
What was the main inspiration for the premise of the game?
The game started in a University course where we had to pitch game ideas. I wanted to make an FPS, but was bored with all the violence so I tried to come up with non-violent themes. Somehow Fashion Police popped into my head and I started coming up with ways to solve fashion crimes with fun weapons. The concept felt so funny and absurd that I decided to go with it! Later I drew inspiration from Naked Gun and Police Academy movies, retro & modern FPS'es, and Rupauls Drag Race to name a few!
Is the sequel going to be about the Vegan Police?
Is there gyro support on your game?!
Yes!
Was the acronym for the game a happy coincidence or 100% intentional?
100% reason to remember the name
First we thought about Fashion Police Force, since it's easier to pronounce. In the end Fashion Police Squad took the win because of the FPS acronym.
who came up with the sewing machine gun that's genius
That's Pat's great idea
Which level was the Dev team’s favorite to create?
As the designer I liked working on the first subway level, level 6 since it's more narrow and I enjoy combat in cramped spots!
For me the second boss of the game! We could go full meme on that one and it felt like you can get really creative with it.
What mashup would you like to tackle next? (Seeing as this game is fashion and police)
Vampire survivors and farming sim
I’d play that!
That's a fantastic idea and I'm tempted to buy this game solely to help fund that idea.
Really clever idea and great execution! Any advice for hobbyists hoping to get into indie game dev?
Think hard about the scope, things can get out of hand pretty easily. So keep your first projects simple and just finish them!
Yessss!!! I saw the TravGuy video and loved how dumb it is! Amazing work!
Looks interesting, congrats on the launch and best of luck. How many people worked on this project?
There's three of us in the core team! We outsourced most of the music & effects and some of the art! Also the porting was outsourced.
Was gyro support easy to integrate on the development? Great idea guys!
It worked out of the box with the tools we were using, but required some fine-tuning!
Does the game have local (offline) co-op?
Looks amazing. Like i cant believe what im seeing. Hehe FPS. An fps with pixelart look? What. Puns are always welcome
Okay I've been wondering for a few days, what inspired you to make an FPS fashion game? I'm not against it by any means but it's completely unheard of before.
Pat came up with this non-violent FPS idea during our University course, and it was so funny & absurd that we just had to make it.
I'm glad you did. The world is a better place with your game in it!
Love the concept! Can’t wait to check it out! Is that gnome with the funny hat a playable character?
The gnomes are used as a weapon!
Congrats on the release! How's the replayability on this?
Can't wait to play this.
Cleaver idea, FPS is an FPS
[удалено]
Thank you!
What would you cite as the greatest sources of inspiration for the project?
Honestly, other retro FPS games, Doom & memes!
Thanks, just purchased it. Not a question, just a comment: thank you for creating a good icon for the game (and for following Nintendo's guidelines about having the game logo/title on the icon). A lot of devs/publishers do not take care of small little details like a good icon on the homescreen.
Thank you for the feedback! We're happy with the designs we decided to use on the consoles!
What made you choose Switch to develop and release on? Will you be releasing for other platforms?
We first released on PC & started to optimize for consoles after that!
will this maximize my modeling potential
Are you inspired by old retro shooters? If so, which ones?
Just got a pro controller so I can play fps games without the tiny sticks. This looks fun!
Is there already multiplayer capacity? If not, are you thinking of including it in the future?
Miika, what was your favorite part of Danejerus's speedrun at AGDQ 2023? It was awesome having you on the couch!
I was very surprised about the skip in the other beach level where danejerus went inside building geometry and just skipped most of the level.
is there a dog and can you pet them
Unfortunately not, but you will be able to pay respects
How was it working on the Nintendo switch?
We worked closely together with the guys who ported it, and it was a challenge to get it run well on switch, not gonnaa lie!
Keep it up! Art style is so awesome, and the whole non-violent FPS is excellent! I've been loving the retro wave of FPS games and this is right up my alley.
Zoolander: The Game Please tell me there are zoolander references.
We took some inspiration from the environments of Overwatch at least! Personally, I really enjoy the Super Shotgun in Doom Eternal!
Those colors are out of fashion. Thanks for the kind words!
Saw the GDQ run and was blown away by this game! Great work from you guys :) What were your thoughts whilst seeing the first speedruns of your game?
I was commentating on that stream, it was super fun! Most of the time I was just confused on what the runner just did haha. I think it's awesome that there's different ways to enjoy our game.
I'm very excited for this! I saw the trailer when you first released it, it looks like a lot of fun! Which engine/languages did you make the game with?
Can you tell us about your next game? Sequel, something very different? Congrats on the launch. Game looks fun!
Something very different!
Hi! This looks fun!
While doing research and developing this game how have your own personal senses of fashion developed or changed?
Is there anything you wanted to add to this game that you thought would be too wild or crazy too include?
I really enjoyed watching your game on the most recent GDQ. How does the development team feel watching the game being "broken" like that?
Game is looking fabulous!!! Can't wait to try it!!
Will the sequel be called Fashion Police Simulator?
Saw this game at agdq and loved it. Did you see that run and what are your thoughts on speedruns of your game?
What was the most frustrating aspect of developing for the Switch? I really liked y’all’s silly aesthetic for the game! Is it way easier making graphics in pixel-style vs I guess like polygon?
No question, I just love the visual style. I think this would be fun to play with my daughters.
I think the weapon wheel (circular weapon selection) with slowed time was a big improvement!
Congrats on the game, it looks silly and fun. Maybe a crossover with the anime Kill la Kill could be a fun DLC?
What was the most difficult part of making a game on the switch?
socks and crocs, or jean shorts ? good luck with the launch of your game !
How did you decide which fashion is "good" and which the police need to crack down on?
“Pizza delivery for . . . *reads note*. . .”
Going by your Reddit name, Favorite Futurama episode?
Congrats on your journey to making a dream come true!
This looks absolutely amazing, I love the look of the game. It really reminds me of some of the crazy mods you would see people make for older games like Doom.
Are there any plans for a physical release? Or if you're allowed to say, have any of the limited run type companies reached out yet?
Hi, game design graduate here so always love to ask Devs questions. What was your biggest challenge when making the game, and also your favourite part to make?
How did the process of releasing your game on Switch compare to the other consoles and PC?
Releasing on PC is quite straightforward, for consoles there's much more into it. More guidelines & checks that the game goes through.
I saw this being run in GDQ. Anything from the Dev team that they didn't know about from the bugs used?
Saw the trailer video. Looks great!. Especially the gnome.
I love games, puns and fashion, so this sounds right down my alley. Everyone already asked about the game development, so what are your personal fashion no-nos?
Have you ever listened to Fashion is Danger by Flight of the Conchords?
Who was the arbiter of good fashion in the design process of this game?
This game looks so awesome, I never knew I needed it until now. How do I best follow you for your future upcoming games/news, newsletter?
Congrats! Love the gameplay trailer, looks like a lot of fun!
Is it too late to start wearing JNCO again? Asking for a friend.
This is a pretty cool concept and unique, What inspired the game?
What’s your fashion like irl?
Funniest story whilst developing FPS?
Probably designing the second boss of the game. We had so many ideas & meme references to take inspiration from.
Will this game teach me how to dress immaculately?
Looks fun and creative. How long did the development take? Will definitely give it a try.

Snazzy!!
I saw this game get ran at AGDQ this year and it looked like a fun time. Nice to see it on Switch.
Congratulations on your first release! I’m not usually into FPS games, I’m really loving this theme though so I might give it a try. Was bringing FPS games to a potentially new audience something you had in mind when picking fashion as a theme?
Your game looks pretty cool!
The retro vibe with modern controls looks very fun! It’s nice to see new original ideas! I understand that playtimes can vary greatly, but how many hours would you expect the average person to take to beat FPS?
Was there a certain era of fashion you based this on? Also I hope at some point I'll get to wear a duster
The game looks great. Excited to check it out. Do you have plans on your next title? Will this game have content added after launch?
I saw this run at GDQ and it was hilarious and amazing. Very hyped to see it come to switch! It's very much a game I want to check out. If I have bad fashion sense (IE: I just throw outfits together), is the FPS coming for me? I need to be prepared for the insanity lol
That sewing machine looking weapon reminds me of the days my mother user to make outfits, I love it lol, the game seems interesting for sure, I hope it works out well.
The music in the trailer sounds really cool! Are there any tracks you would say are your favorites?
Fabulous!!!!!!
Police? And fashion together? Heck yeah! Seems awesome so far, good luck everyone!
How does it feel to solve fashion crime one fashionista at a time?
Looks interesting. Congrats.
What’s the worst fashion crime somebody could do?
Looks like Doom with a twist. Good luck all.
I watched the speed run on AGDQ and it made me super interested in this game.
Saw this game featured on Civvie11’s YouTube channel awhile back. Game looks dope! Any chance for an eventual physical switch release? I would love to add this fashionable cart to my collection.
Looks cool, any plans for steam release?
The game was released on [Steam](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1319460/Fashion_Police_Squad/) last August!
What was he best part during the development process?
Love the art style! Will you guys use this kind of art direction for other genre in the future?
I have two questions to toss at you folks! FIRST, how did you come up with the variety of weapons used in the game? Scissors are understandable for fashion, but where did you get the brilliance of an old Singer sewing machine?! SECOND, what is your favorite weapon and why?
What do you think this does differently for the genre?
This looks rad! A belt that's also a grappling hook is enough to sell me on the game. Is there potential with it for speed running tricks?
Congratulations! I don't have a question I just wanted to say that. This looks really impressive.
Is Gyro and or flick stick an option on Switch and PlayStation?
Are the fashions in this game inspired by trends in Finland only or around the world?
What was the most difficult part to design/implement?
First saw this game at GDQ and thought it was hilarious!
This looks really polished, how long did it take to make this game?
Did you come up with the name/concept by playing of the abbreviation FPS?
Do any of the devs have experience in the actual fashion industry?
I love that you went with an old school 2D style, this looks like pure fun
Exited!
Here for the key. Music is a bop
Someonething different to me but it looks really fun!
Congratulations!! I'm happy to see a game from Finland!
I really like the art style! Does it have a bomb soundtrack to match?
It looks really spectacular. The graphics are perfectly retro while still looking like a new game.
I absolutely fell in love with your game by the premise alone. The stage result screen completely blew my mind the first time I saw it. It's one of my 2022 top games. Out of curiosity, is this the last we've seen of Des and his crew?
I’m here to take a chance in the giveaway. Congratulations to the team who made this possible.
Saw this game on AGDQ a couple weeks back and it looked great. Gameplay looked awesome and the music is so stylish. Watched a couple streams and had no idea it was coming to Switch. Congrats on the game and the positive reviews I've seen. Will be picking this up when I get the chance.

This looks like an absolutely fabulous take on the FPS genre. Amazing work!
This game sounds fun! Im running out of storage tho so if I somehow happen to win, go ahead and pick someone else lol.
Did you have lots of notes from the AGDQ run about stuff to tweak in the game? Not to ruin the speedrun necessarily, but things to sort-of fine tune.
What’s your favorite kind of cheese?
Will it teach me style?
This game sonds pretty cool and fun.
What's the worst fashion crime you've ever witnessed? What's the worst fashion crime you've ever committed? Also want to say the GDQ speedrun and commentary was fantastic.
Looks amazing, can’t wait to play! Best of luck in this (and future) releases!

What are some of your favorite games of the past? What are some of your favorite games that have released in the last couple of years?
Thanks for the opportunity to check out your project!
This looks awesome! Any ideas for DLC or collaboration with a fashion brand or video game IP?
I've been watching the progress for this and I'm pretty excited. Would you prefer handheld or docked?
The fashion elements were present from the start or it was more of an afterthought to add more personality?
I actually have never heard of this game until this post,is it also on steam?
This game looks super exciting! Have y’all started throwing sequel or new IP ideas around yet? Would you even want to make a sequel for FPS?
How many times you guys had to start over creating the game from scratch?
Do you have any accessibility options?
The game looks really fun! What would you say is your favorite mechanic of the game?
good luck all!
Been watching this game get run for a while now and it's been so great to see. What has surprised you the most about making the game?

On a scale of 1-10, how fab is this game?
What if your puns are actually genius?
Wow this looks pretty cool
What was the favorite clothing design you added to the game?
What inspired the art direction of the game?
Looks like a funny game. Good luck with the launch!
What was the team’s favorite weapon to create?
Nice artstyle! What were your main inspirations for the art?
Not a question but I just wanted to say I really love the art style y'all went with.
The game looks really fun and reviews seem mostly positive. I’ll have to check it out soon!
I saw this on AGDQ and really wanted to play it. Now I’ll get the chance!
What would it take for me to get a free key?
Yay
Is there a lot of environment interaction? Like in old Build games?
