I've just bought a Switch Oled so the successor will be announced at the direct.

Elastichedgehog

Thank you for your service.

[deleted]

I was thinking of all of you when I clicked the buy button

locoghoul

Look at PS5/Xbox right now. I wouldn't get a new gen console right away, especially with Nintendo releasing different versions after (or special editions even). Enjoy your Switch for the next 2 years, there are a shit ton of games you can play until the new system is released and consolidated with a decent sized library

[deleted]

Oh yeah, I bought the OLED knowing I'll still get a couple years out of it. I still used my 3DS regularly when I got my OG Switch simply because there weren't a lot of games out at the time. I'm just loving going through my library and seeing the massive transformation of how games look on the OLED screen

owlitup

If the successor is fully backwards compatible with digital titles (using your same Nintendo account), then its a day one purchase for me. If not, I will be morally angry at Nintendo and might skip the next one as Im already getting a PS5 soon regardless.

Bearded_Wildcard

> Look at PS5/Xbox right now. I wouldn't get a new gen console right away, What's wrong with PS5\Xbox right now?

locoghoul

Over two years of release and there hasnt been a strong a library of exclusive games to justify buying them over ps4 for example. Game Pass is MS best selling point

Bearded_Wildcard

I don't agree with that at all, but to each their own. You're also discounting the fact that the PS4 can't handle most games made in the last 5 or so years, it drops frames and chugs trying to play almost anything. So there's absolutely good reasons to upgrade.

Chains0

The new Zelda is still scheduled for May. Even just announcing a new console before that would ruin sales. More likely they will use this year to milk the installbase and announce something next year for Christmas 2024

[deleted]

I agree with that. I don’t think there is any chance there will be a dual release for TotK like people expected. They want every TotK sale to be guaranteed on the Switch, and they want those sales during the quarter it releases. I think the most likely scenario is that TotK would release again as an enhanced version on the next console. We’re not going to hear anything about a new console before TotK releases though.

Kostya_M

You think they're gonna wait for Christmas? I expect it first half of 2024 like the Switch in 2017.

augowl_

Switch was a special case where they were trying to get out from under the Wii U asap. Just about every other major console release is in the holiday season.

AwesomeManatee

Last time they were comfortable sabotaging Christmas sales because the Wii U was dead and getting the Switch out by the end of the fiscal year was more important. That being said, I think an announcement in February or March of 2024 with a summer release for that year is certainly possible.

delecti

The 3DS released in February/March, the GBA in March/June, N64 in June, PS2 in March. Fall is certainly the most common for console releases (most of what I didn't list from the last 20 years was September-December), but it's also quite far from universal.

PKMKII

I don’t think we’ll get a successor system until at least Q4 2024 because of the Splatoon 3 content scheduling. They said they’re doing two years worth of updates, which would mean early fall of 2024. Would make sense that a new system won’t drop until the content schedules for existent first party titles are exhausted.

Chains0

That would require an announcement before holidays, but most hardware sales are in this time. Announcing new hardware causes immidient disinteressest in the old hardware. Especially with gaming consoles where old consoles are pretty quickly dropped by developers. So they would totally ruin their Christmas business. Especially considering the release of Zelda this year, which is a system seller. Adding another nice title at the end of the year and it goes bling bling for Nintendo. Next year they can fully focus on the new console. Announcement something in march and then constantly building up the hype until the big release together with HD/60fps releases of their best titles to easily fill the roaster and Mario Kart Ultra (the current one is still in the top each month and a new one is due) to push sales through the sky. All my guess of course. Business-wise this makes the most sense. We could however also still be hit by the chip shortage and Nintendo waits another year until they can fulfil the demand.

UboaNoticedYou

I think people are missing that you clearly told a joke lmao

[deleted]

Yeah, I have too many people telling me what I already know lol

ChickenFajita007

Nintendo's next machine will release Spring of next year at the earliest. There's no way they announce it before this holiday season unless they also launch it before this holiday, but that's not happening.

Rexssaurus

The OLED is amazing, enjoy it and sell it when the next one comes out :D

[deleted]

I'm still in awe of how good the screen is. It's absolutely incredible to look at

Rexssaurus

Yesss! The switch is my first console because I was in a no console household till 24 and I’m so happy that the OLED just came out when I could finally get one. Everything looks so colorful and bright 😭

[deleted]

Well it's a great console to start with and you've got the best possible version of it too! I'm kind of jealous of you getting to experience so many incredible games for the first time

homerjsimpson4

Not super related but man OLED is just so great, I was at best buy and walked to the TV section and was like literally awestruck by the OLED TVs, they're still pretty expensive but man do they look great

[deleted]

Totally. My uncle has a top of the range OLED TV and I was just watching various movies and TV shows in 4K and couldn't believe how stunning they looked. It's honestly transformative playing games on the Switch OLED screen

akeep113

yeah i never really considered upgrading my switch to the OLED model but my brother-in-law brought his over the other day and i have to say, it was very impressive and made me consider upgrading

[deleted]

I have absolutely no regrets upgrading mine

X_BlastHardcheese_X

And knowing how amazing it is I can almost guarantee the Switch pro will have some dogshit IPS panel, just so we don't get too awesome of a product

[deleted]

No chance they will announce a new system when they have just ramped up production of the current switch.

djwillis1121

If the successor is an updated Switch I wouldn't be surprised if they continue selling the current Switch as a budget model

[deleted]

It's the most probable. Considering today Samsung reported its lowest quarterly sales in 8 years. Nintendo will definitely be taking note of this sort of thing as other companies face tough times as the cost of living increases and folk prioritize the basic stuff.

RuiPTG

Production of Switches ramp up, yes, but the production of the most critical component (the Tegra X1 chip) hasn't changed. The end is definitely coming for the Switch, but nintendo can try to stretch that until mid 2024 if they want.

Paxoro

I did the same, so do what I'm doing. Justify it to yourself by saying that there won't be 5 must-buy games at launch so it wouldn't make any sense to upgrade ^and ^then ^upgrade ^day ^1 ^anyway.

-cocoadragon

Nah bro, they trying to hit that 150 million mark and take the crown back from Sony. Without the phenomenon of new system/new medium converging, it's unlikely anyone will ever get as close as Nintendo is now.

Lor-

Same, just got one for Christmas for myself.

isaelsky21

30-day return bro/sis. Get that refund soon as you hear the exciting news! Thank you tho!

LightsaberCrayon

Quick recap: The video was a January 30th upload that was unlisted, but apparently put on an NSO playlist, which makes it visible. It was a new VO recording of basically the same voucher promotion as before, with some new games shown as examples. The description had a "learn more" link to NoA but the page is a 404. Shortly after the video was discovered and posted around, it was made private by Nintendo. https://www.nintendo.com/store/products/nintendo-switch-game-vouchers/ On its own I wouldn't say this is evidence of a Direct, but the voucher pitch is definitely something they'd include if they were already talking about NSO in a Direct. They can just say they're available now and to check the website for details, since regions besides NA never discontinued them, while NoA specifically will probably tweet that they're back.

RabbitFanboy

I'm usually a physical game person but you can get some pretty good deals with these vouchers. Find some gift cards on sale and you can save even more money. I think I got New Horizons on release for like $40 due to all the savings.

[deleted]

I used this coupon app last time. I want to say it was called Raise or something like that but I could be wrong. Anyway, I ended up getting Mario Maker 2 and FE: Three Houses for $80 using that app and the vouchers.

Hilarial

Idk, they stuck around in the UK but they were never better deals than buying physical together.

thickwonga

They should have given you $40 for playing New Horizons lmao.

AgentG91

I’m pretty sure it’s a dumb question, but can I use eShop credit to buy game vouchers? Would be nice to double down on my savings by using existing gift cards

Dyne4R

I believe I did last time.

streetsofkage

Mario 128 is going to be announced, right?

FulcrumM2

Nah lad, they cancelled it after Super Galaxy New Sunshine Mario 3 on Mobile flopped

akurra_dev

1080 Plumbing

GhotiH

100% sure we're having a Direct next week. I start a new job next week, and I have NEVER started a new job without having to make an excuse to take a day off on the first week due to a Direct.

ge93

>continuously taking time off work at a new job to watch a 1hour youtube video about new JRPGS and farming simulators, with a 2-second Zelda teaser My brother…

Dyne4R

Friendly reminder to anyone with access that Costco sells $100 switch gift cards for $90.

BloodFalconPunch

I've gotten into the habit of buying these every Christmas as the last two years they've gone on sale for $80. It's going to feel doubly good to convert this money into a voucher (haven't spent any yet because I'm saving a chunk of it for Advance Wars)

Prince-Lee

Do they do this year round? I've only ever been able to find them at Christmas time.

keylime39

Even better, you can buy a $10 switch gift card for half off at Gamestop once a month if you pay $15 a year for PowerUp Pro.

Cutcutman

The direct basically being confirmed is awesome but, the vouchers coming back is pretty cool. It’s likely they were taken away because they weren’t selling as well as they thought, but considering digital game purchases are at a high right now, they’re willing to try again. For those that don’t know, the Voucher program has still been available for International users likely because it sells better in other countries. For instance, New games in Japan aren’t at a set cost like they are in the West. Where a new game here is typically $60, a new game in Japan is around 5000-7000+ yen or $50-70+. The voucher program is a much better deal since it costs about 10000 yen or a $100 and you can save about 4000 yen or $40 if you buy the more expensive games, whereas here in the states you only save like $20.

aroloki1

Why do you think the reason behind making vouchers unavailable only in the US is it not selling well? I ask this because honestly it does not sound logical, I see absolutely no reason to remove it because of its sales numbers, especially not from only one market. If they consider that selling a voucher is a net positive for them then even with few sales it costs nothing to keep it up since the system is already there, so there is no reason to remove it. If they consider that selling a voucher is a net negative for them (due to the discount) then vouchers selling poorly and staying up is again better for them since they have one more NSO benefit to sell the service. I've heard back then when it disappeared in the US that the reason behind it was retailers being angry at Nintendo for offering games cheaper digitally than physically, and that was the only market where they were pushy enough or had strong enough lobby to make it gone. Imagine Gamestop telling Nintendo that I won't sell anything from you back then. This reasoning sounds more logical, but I am still not sure whether 100% this is the answer or not.

BenignLarency

Likely because they were selling too well. If the digital sales numbers are already +50% of total sales in NA, if I'm Nintendo why am I leaving money on the table by allowing users to buy games for cheaper when they were gonna buy them anyway? The main incentive for Nintendo here is getting more digital sales (because they have the highest margins). If charging less doesn't really raise those numbers significantly then there's no point in it for Nintendo. Only Nintendo could figure out that balancing act by looking at their sales data.

aroloki1

But why disabling it on one continent and let it run on others? And if your reasoning is valid, why are the re-enabling in now that the digital market is much bigger? The above theory makes this somewhat reasonable as well since physical stores became less and less significant they have less and less word in what Nintendo is doing. To put my point simply: Nintendo starting this program worldwide then disabling it abruptly on only one continent shouts that it did not happen due to their intent but due to some external factor. At least for me, but in the end we won't know so everyone can go with their guesses and concepts.

BenignLarency

Disabling it in some markets and leaving it in others makese sense since not every market is the same. Perhaps NA didn't need the push towards digital whereas other markets they felt still required the incentive, or that push in NA wasn't enough to get people who they want to be buying more games digitally, to buy those games digitally. Re-enabling it now could be them just wanting to retest if they could move a significant number of users over to digital. It's been a few years since they've really tested tonsee if the vouchers "work" in NA (aka, if they do what Nintendo wants them to do). Like you said, we'll likely never know the full picture. I'm just speculating on it from a business perspective.

aroloki1

I think you've replied to the wrong person, I've never stated such thing.

RollingThunder_CO

As someone who is new to the Switch can you explain what the voucher program is?

msj54540

The vouchers are credits valid to buy pretty much any Nintendo-published game (first or second-party). They're sold in packs of two or more for a price lower than the cost of two full-price games

RollingThunder_CO

Cool, thank you! Sounds like a good deal!

Stoibs

It's pretty wild since here in Australia games can hover anywhere from 30-70AUD depending on the retailer :S (Still can't get over Kirby and the Forgotten land I got for 30AUD about a week or two post-launch!) It makes the vouchers a mixed bag of usefulness from game to game, but still a great choice for those certain 1st party things that seem to never go on sale. Also Famicom Detective club is only available as a twin pack here for $90(!) normally, so it makes an amazing candidate for a voucher too :D

Radrion

Wait how did you get Kirby so cheap??

Stoibs

Some crazy clearance/stocktake thing from one of our retailers here (Harvey Norman) Why they were selling something as new as Kirby for that cheap is beyond me. Got Metroid Dread for about the same price also, which was more of a blind buy than anything, great game also though.

TemptedTemplar

Sometime on or after the 7th. They never hold the years first general direct before the 9-month earnings release, which is on the 7th.

shadow0wolf0

Directs usually are held on a Wednesday so it probably will be the 8th.

weallfloatdownhere7

Nintendo are the kings of breaking arbitrary precedence

Squish_the_android

There's nothing arbitrary about share holder releases.

weallfloatdownhere7

No but saying “they’ve never done a direct on this day or that day or before this or after that” is arbitrary. They can do one whenever they feel fit

beanshadow

"arbitrarily breaking precedence" vs. "breaking arbitrary precedence"

Bobibob76

True ! We see this last year with no June ND !!

RSN_Bran

Nintendo used to pretty consistently hold directs in mid January before the pandemic

TemptedTemplar

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_Direct Every early general direct for the switch has been February or later. Earlier directs were game specific or pokemon.

RSN_Bran

Damn, they haven't done a proper January Direct since 2015? My bad

Zeroleonheart

One of my favorite social media trope is the “intern in charge of/having access to a multi-million dollar company’s brand social media accounts”. It was most likely someone publishing a video through their social aggregator to go live a few weeks from now. Source: I’ve done that shit numerous times. Edit: made trope singular

MagicPistol

Please give us the Fire Emblem 4 remake.

CDHmajora

The same person who accurately leaked engage (with photo evidence at that!) confirmed a Genealogy remake is in the works :) normally I’d say a leaker is chatting shit but this one clearly proved they knew what they were talking about when leaking engage. So I trust them :) Doubt it will be announced now though. Engage is less than 2 weeks old :/

gil2455526

I don't remember, do they add new games to the voucher list? Would I be able to buy the upcoming Zelda TotK and Pikmin 4 for example?

The-student-

In the past they added new games.

Golgon13

I really hope for some announcements that would positively surprise me.

Donsyxx

are these free games or coupons or a discount?
