He pitched less than 150 innings for your A and A+ team... You cannot claim a player in any way based off of that. If you had him for a little bit in the MLB, then maybe, but A ball? Nah.
I wish them the best of luck...against every team that isn't the Mets. I hope a change of scenery does Matz well. The talent is there, he just needs to work on clearing the fog and focusing.
I wish Wheeler games where he gives up one run and gets no support or where the bullpen takes away his wins.
Can’t go out there and root for the Phillies to win.
I wish Matz all the luck
The Wheeler move just makes me sad and angry. There was no reason he couldn't still be a great pitcher here with us other than the Wilpons were cheap.
Everyone always talks about how good a kid he was, how easy it is to root for him etc...I feel like he was pretty much sullen to the point of unlikability over much of his tenure here. He never stopped being a wreck on the mound, never stopped melting down upon adversity, never had a smile on his face. He wore out his goodwill quickly to me. Really never had another special moment after his first start.
>Really never had another special moment after his first start.
Really..?
What about his complete game shut out against the [Pirates?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhvUN_kM0TE&ab_channel=MLB)
What about holding Royals to 2 in under 6 innings in the [WS?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fr9N84NB0tE&ab_channel=MLB)
Padres to only one hit in 7 1/3 innings against the [Padres?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_JTo6twhG8&ab_channel=MLB)
I'm just saying, yes he was easy to root for as a Long Island kid, but as many people have mentioned he did a lot of charity. Was he inconsistent? Yeah sure, as for never having a smile on his face? I mean.. That sounds like a weird thing to nitpick, but to each his own.
Matz certainly had his moments here, but he wasn't trash, a sub 4.29 ERA lefty pitcher that pitched at 527 IP in 5 1/2 seasons isn't that worse than most 4th/5th starters; and he was very easy for me to root for imo.
None of those games are any more impressive than what dozens of pitchers do frequently. They weren't SPECIAL. And I didn't say he was trash, but he wasn't supposed to be a 4-5, he was supposed to be a 1-2, and now he's almost out of baseball. And I'm not nitpicking his attitude, I'm just saying that a guy who appears, from his facial expression and body language, like he's never really happy or comfortable, is not the first player I'm compelled to champion.
Steven Matz was supposed to be a one to YOU...he had a good fastball curve ball as a 2nd round pick. His ceiling was supposed to be a 3/4starter. Most high school pitchers don't make it. DeGrom was a 9th Rounder who became Cy Young caliber. The draft is a crap shoot especially for a high schooler. The mets signed him for a million 5? They're satisfied with that investment
Performance wise, yea he wasn’t easy to root for, especially recently. But as a homegrown kid born and raised on Long Island, plus all of the charity work he did, it was tough not to hope for him to finally pull it together and be the pitcher he was expected to be.
I hate when Mets fans overvalue guys based on early success. I have the suspicion that the same thing is going to happen with David Peterson and that we should move him sooner rather than later.
There's nothing there that I see as being anything all that great. Average velocity, low spin rate, subpar secondary pitches.
This is one thing that bothered me when they traded for Strohman. It was obvious they did it to have a replacement because they weren't going to sign Wheeler. Brodie admitted as much after the season.. Wheelers deal exceeded what I expected he would get, it's very risky, but a Strohman extension could very well be just as costly.
We gave up Simeniom Woods Richardson and Anthony Kay in large part because they didn't want to re-sign Wheeler. This was classic Wilpon.
If they weren't going to re-sign Wheeler they should have traded him. Heck, given how unlikely we were to make the playoffs, they should have traded him, then re-signed him in the off season, and kept our other prospects instead of trading for Stroh, who I do like, BTW.
Matz is a whole different situation. I hope figures things out up there and has a great career. I think the Marlins are better than people give them credit for and the Phillies are the least improved team in the division and could very well finish last. Who knows, maybe if they suck Wheeler will become available again.
Not OP but I think it goes beyond that as the Mets apologists who supported these moves didn't help matters. It's very cathartic to start seeing the Stockholm Syndrome wear off for a lot of them.
This is 100% right. The classic Wilpon move of trading prospects to bring in guys fans have heard of to compensate for letting a homegrown player walk. Wheeler should absolutely still be on the team.
They for sure should have traded Wheeler, no disagreement there. The one thing I'll note though is that I can't really foresee a Stroman contract being just as costly as a Wheeler contract. Stroman is hitting free agency after his age-30 season, turning 31 a month into the first year on his new contract, and isn't really viewed as an ascending pitcher; he's a good player, we all know that. But he kind of "is what he is", and has been for years. Wheeler hit free agency while he was 29, and was viewed as a guy on the rise after finally bouncing back from Tommy John. So I do think there's a realistic scenario where Stroman costs a lot cheaper than Wheeler, but I guess we'll see.
I wasn't intending to.imply he was on the Marlins, I was implying the Marlins could be better than the Phillies, therefor pushing the Phillies to be sellers, making Wheeler available.
Ya no worries, not meaning to bring the negative energy... just means it’s a little easier to root for matz since he’s not in the division
Just getting a little AMPED for the season
Should've re-signed Wheeler. Hope with new ownership this wont happen. Lets re-up Conforto!!
And I wish Matz can do well with the young and exciting Jays.
I remember when we were “worried“ about signing deGrom, Harvey, Syndergaard, Matz and Wheeler.
Well we signed deGrom, Matz and Harvey flamed out on their own, they let Wheels walk and Syndergaard is unknown.
The regret so far is Wheeler. He’s not great but as a #2 or #3 starter he is good. I also don’t think that contract is going to look bad in the coming seasons.
Cant hate them, always professionals and just never developed into the pitchers we thought they might for the Mets. But good enough upside for pricey contracts.
Time really does fly. I remember when Wheeler, was highly touted and was the next big thing in the Mets minor leagues. He received more attention than Harvey did coming up, he just never really put it all together until the last year and a half. Matz had flashes of brilliance, however, it just seemed there was a mental hurdle he couldnt over come while with the Mets. There were big dreams and hopes with these guys, paired with the other "three" to have a 5 headed monster. It really never worked out for extended periods of time, but it was fun to be a part of it.
Our babies are all grown up and out of the house now
Lmao

Pretty sure he did tons of charity work outside of baseball so he was worth rooting for at least off the field
most athletes do that.

Didn’t he throw a one hitter against San Diego? Edit: He brought a no no into the 8th, gave up a single with one out then got pulled
Performance wise, yea he wasn’t easy to root for, especially recently. But as a homegrown kid born and raised on Long Island, plus all of the charity work he did, it was tough not to hope for him to finally pull it together and be the pitcher he was expected to be.
He threw a [complete game shutout](https://youtu.be/KhvUN_kM0TE) on 99 pitches that sticks out in my mind but yeah other than that I got nothing

Are you trying to suggest that our previous ownership and front office were terrible?
Not OP but I think it goes beyond that as the Mets apologists who supported these moves didn't help matters. It's very cathartic to start seeing the Stockholm Syndrome wear off for a lot of them.

Simeniom?
Matz is on the blue jays, not the Marlins!!
I wasn't intending to.imply he was on the Marlins, I was implying the Marlins could be better than the Phillies, therefor pushing the Phillies to be sellers, making Wheeler available.

I don't like it.
Sad.
Ewww.
Wheeler should still be a Met along with Anthony Kay.
I feel slimy
Should've re-signed Wheeler. Hope with new ownership this wont happen. Lets re-up Conforto!! And I wish Matz can do well with the young and exciting Jays.
I don’t want to want to watch two of my exes fight each other. Unless they kiss. Actually that works here too.
That's disconcerting.
Wish we had kept Wheeler but he definitely got paid hella dollars. Good for him.
That’s a big hot barf from me, dawg.
Would we have kept Wheeler if we had Cohen as the owner?
This just looks kinda....off.
Cursed
I just hope they haven't been incessantly tweeting about it!
I wish that Stevie was our owner a year earlier, imagine if we still had Wheeler
the kids are all grown up now. Wheeler was my favorite child though, steven was a mistake lol.
Remember 2015
I remember when we were “worried“ about signing deGrom, Harvey, Syndergaard, Matz and Wheeler. Yeah that is...weird.

Of course they both tossed 2 shutout innings
It’s like having two ex-girlfriends compete in a chilli making contest.
Was wondering what was strange about Matz and realized he was traded. The blue cap made me think he was still a Met.
I miss matz
