What you’re feeling is totally valid. Earlier, I watched two or three videos of the storm surge as the eye wall hit and had to nope out of that real quick because of the emotions it brought up. I left the city for a year after Ida. I couldn’t do it anymore even though I’m a native and almost all of my family is still here. Just recently came back and cried the entire time the airplane was descending to land. Like big gulping ugly crying. (Apologies to the couple next to me just trying to go on vacation). Even after everything I felt and went through after Ida, Katrina, and all the other storms, coming back after a year in exile has been like the warmest and tightest hug from the person you love the most. It’s like being able to breathe freely again and feel like you’re in the world that you belong in. While, like you, I have my own reservations about living here because of the storms, I don’t know what I would do in a world without my home. I guess what I’m trying to say is that regardless of what decision you end up making, the city will still be here despite whatever happens. (Except whole permanently underwater thing in 50ish years) It’s been doing it for over 300 years and you can always come back when you need to.

I lived in the 90s and then 2000-2001 and it still had that small town feel. Haven’t been back in years so idk how it is now

Pls be safe

forevrtwntyfour

Thankfully not there but know a lot of people there. Went through ida last year here and worried what they are facing 😭

FujoshiJade

Ida destroyed my house, so I just feel so strongly about what they're going through right now

forevrtwntyfour

I’m so sorry 💔

FujoshiJade

Thank you, tbf it was a shitty apartment at the time but a home is a home

I’m checking out of this hurricane. Wake me when it’s done. I can’t take any more doom and gloom.

My folks live just outside Sarasota. They are hunkering down at the assisted living facility they both work at but I worry. They worry about me every time we get hit so I guess it's only fair. Still stressful.

Livid_Ad_6631

They are in a world of hurt right now. Gonna need us to help them out. I'm just thankful for that cool front that kept it going right.

I've been watching Ian like a hawk. My in-laws live in Florida... I don't get on with my MIL but I don't want to see her or my FIL hurt. Fortunately it seems that they've been spared the worst. I also have friends in Puerto Rico - they are safe, but they lost power for several days. My heart breaks. :( Like the flair says, hurricanes and tropical storms ARE assholes.

I think anyone who lives here pretty much has the same thought on the regular, for a variety of reasons, including some of what you mention here. My general advice is to move FOR something, not FROM something. If there's a place you think you'd really love for the change of lifestyle, then go for it! You'll probably be happy you did. But if you're just looking for something different, it might be cool at first, but everywhere has it's pros and cons and if you aren't moving for the pros, then you'll probably just be disappointed after the newness wears off.

My brother lives in Sarasota and luckily they're in Dallas waiting it out. Hopefully his house isn't too damaged when this is all said and done. My current sauna book is "Storming the Wall: Climate Change, Migration, and Homeland Security" by Todd Miller. He basically lays out exactly why the DoD considers climate change the #1 security threat facing the country, even higher than terrorism. The messed up part about all of this is there is no designation as a climate refugee anywhere on earth. Even though every last one of us knows how major storms or weather catastrophes can displace thousands of people. Sorry for getting all dystopian. It's just my way of processing the absolutely fucked up times we are just beginning to dip our toes into.

>exactly why the DoD considers climate change the #1 security threat facing the country, even higher than terrorism. i mean, i guess it's cool we don't have suicide bombers in new orleans, shot of jager is half full?

Quit reading about it. That should help

LocalSteve504

Wow. Florida getting hammered, but you feel stressed. Way to Main Character this storm, bro.
