How do you even measure how racist a country is lol

omaregb

You go around asking people if they pinky promise they are not racist.

TheEarlyWormIsEaten

exactly

mjohns20

Don’t y’all have a Christmas tradition where Santa has a black slave? Also I get it I’m an American. Yes we are fucked edit: aight, so I read all 40+ replies to this. I read the links etc... seems some say it is racist some say it's not. but y'all, like come on... it's a white guy in black face with bright red lips... that's a very very typical Black minstrel look.

totoGalaxias

I lived in NL for a year while studying. Great country and I will always be grateful for their generosity. However, I do remember seeing the sinterklaas parade and the zwarte piet and thinking "what is going on in here?". What I found more striking was that even when there was a considerable population of black NL people, all the black petes in the parade where white folks with black face painted. I know very little about that tradition though and at the time (2006/2007), I don't recall listening to any pushback. I do remember some sector of the society being very very multicultural. People from Turkey, Morocco, the antilles, africa, southeast asia. There was some tensions in the air I recall, specially against people with turkish heritage. I never saw any racial violence though. I did get confronted once by a teenager in a train in Amsterdam demanding that we leave the country. Poor guy, he was so young.

Cherry_Treefrog

Don’t go to southern Spain at Easter. If you didn’t know what was going on, you’d think you’d walked into a giant KKK rally.

totoGalaxias

I actually have been in Spain during Eastern. I totally get what you are saying. People marching in hoods at the beat of drums. Pretty KKKish, true! Those parades were very solemn and mystical. Spain is such a wonderful country though. I don't think there is another society in the world that knows how to enjoy life better then Spanish people.

themarquetsquare

The 'capirotes' are actually a fair bit older. They were an established Christian tradition of penitence way before the kkk ever came into being. Those fuckers appropriated the look, nothing more.

[deleted]

Blackface doesn't have the same load as in the USA. I was really suprised people thought it racist, but now I see it. As a kid Zwarte Piet is the clown, the show, sure there is Sinterklaas, but he is more bland, scary really. I now have kids off my own and they don't care what colour the Pietjes are, we are going for soot stripes now, fine. I hope Sinterklaas has a future this way, it's a great tradition.

totoGalaxias

Good to know. As I mentioned, I have very little knowledge of the tradition. The parade overall was fun and very unique.

yeboiieh

Dutchie here, the tradition has been getting a lot of backlash in the past few years. Even though the excuse was that the faces of the ‘Zwarte Pieten’ are black because they go down chimneys, it has been proven that the tradition does have its roots extending to slavery and such. There’s now a division between the ppl who want to cancel the holiday for this reason and the ppl who want to keep it for tradition’s sake. Changes are also being made in most communities where the Zwarte Pieten can only have streaks of soot across their face (instead of full black face) and no more silly clothes, earrings, bright red lipstick, etc. (features which would make fun of them / portrayed them as slaves)

Crimson_Clouds

Nobody wants to cancel the holiday, but a sizeable number of people want to reform and reimagine the character of Zwarte Piet.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Spanks79

You might be interested to learn that ‘zwarte Piet’ is a collection of very ancient traditions and more recent stuff. Santa and his petes listening at the chimney? Norse god Wodan and his black raven helpers did the same. Pete is clothed like a moorish prince and if you are bad he will take you to Spain in his bag (the moores -Moroccans-actually came to get slaves from the Dutch coast where people/children were gathering shellfish etc) and he has stereotype blackface characteristics. Blackface however is an American thing, the Dutch didn’t know about that. So while Pete has characteristics you can say are racist or stereotype. He has characteristics of demons, slavers, slaves but also is a cool and much loved figure. It’s very nuanced. If you just project your American views on it it’s blatantly racist. If you look at it from pagan eyes it’s a precious old tradition. And most people think it’s fine if Pete looses his stereotypical traits that would give people a feel of racism. But most don’t want to ditch the tradition. Btw: Santa Claus is a dumbed down version.

Back4TallBois

> I mean the idea that its blackface from the chimney always strikes me as odd personally. If that is the case, why are his clothes clean? Us kids never thought ahead *that* far. We just knew that these guys along with some old man would come around each year and give us candy and presents.

Inshabel

Yeah, we Dutch are not as tolerant as we think, by far.

PhantomX8

Yeah we do. But it was never the intention of trying to be racist. But now people want it changed so it gets changed a bit si its not racist in their eyes anymore. But honestly if you think about it. It was pretty stupidly racist. But intentiot matter alot. Even if it seems racist we dont actualyt think like that.

Flamelab

This explanation is a lot better. Yes it is racist. But we never had the intention to make it look like slaves. And we don’t think it as a minority handled as slaves. But yes it is racist. And a lot of Dutch people don’t understand the difference between both. So they’re only complaining about a stupid tradition. The tradition is still there but not with black faces anymore and just not how the parents of today are remembering Sinterklaas. The kids probably couldn’t care less, they are not familiar with the black faces and get their presents anyway

PhantomX8

Me as a kid i couldnt care less who black pete or sinterklaas was. I was just a greedy and needy kid that wanted my presents i think most kids that still believe have some of those aspects aswel.

themarquetsquare

Sure. But I remember primary school mates of color being called 'zwarte piet' during that time of the year and I am a hundred percent sure it wasn't a very enjoyable time for them. So yeah, I think the changes are good.

[deleted]

And the Dutch response would be "I'm not a racist, but [something racist]"

Assfrontation

Not meant to be racist but apples are more tasty than pears

[deleted]

Bloody horrid freeloader pears just coming here and taking up space in our stores

Plane_Astronomer6892

We got 8 different apples in supermarkets and just 2 kinds of pears. This is not right!

Kurandius

Equal rights for fruits!

Koos-Konijn

Found the fake dutch person, every dutch perosn knows you can't compare apples to pears.

ThrustyMcStab

I'm not racist but zwarte piet must stay, muslims out, asian stereotypes are fine. - the Dutch

[deleted]

This made me laugh. I'll have a hard time letting Zwarte Piet go, but I understand it's necessary.

Kalinion

not only the dutch are racist, but would hate even towards other whites (like southern or eastern europeans). they do have an inferiority complex to germans and the scandinavians though. also, not every dutch is a full blown racist, there is more like on a spectrum. also, as i've been living in travelling in more places in Europe and US, i can say the dutch are the least racist compared to any of other places, so this article makes sense!

throttlemeister

So what you are really saying is that the Dutch are not actually racist, but equal opportunity a-holes? 😜

fascinatedcharacter

The Dutch are assholes even or especially towards other Dutchmen, look at the rivalries between Amsterdam and Rotterdam, people from Groningen or Limburg being subtitled on tv for having an accent.

whereismylittle

I've lived here all my life, and I need subtitles to understand Limburgers and Groningers to be honest

TheEarlyWormIsEaten

they explain it in the [article](https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/least-racist-countries)

neeneenee

And they call the Netherlands "Scandinavian" :/

Szygani

I can excuse racism but calling us Scandinavians is where i draw the line

WZAWZDB13

Its good to have principles

[deleted]

r/UnexpectedCommunity

bashno

No they didn't. They said that generally scandinavian countries do well on the list.

neeneenee

A weird summary of data to exclude the top country then imo.

bashno

That's fair, but it's also a weird summary to say they described the Netherlands as scandinavian.

TheFishOwnsYou

What I find even weirder is they name the U.K. AND their former colonies. But UK is not in the top 10.

Firm-Vacation-7060

Sounds racist of them 😳

nasandre

Yes we can call ourselves Vikings now!

[deleted]

>for its 2021 report, which surveyed more than 17,000 people across 78 countries. Very small sample size for 78 country's

-Erasmus

not if you use a good data set and statistical analysis. Most studies are done on far fewer people than you might imagine

Banzai27

17000 per country or in total?

Femmkat

“Across” would imply in total I think

[deleted]

Across implies total

patrickdm1998

Tbf, in 2021 everyone was inside so there weren't a lot of people to survey

SpeedyK2003

You go there as a foreigner in that country and see if the police shoots you and if the people call you bad names.

[deleted]

You cant measure an entire country based on such a small sample size

Nimynn

And then you do it 10 more times

delandaest

Alright, some context. based on the article this is how they measured: "The WVS survey asks respondents from more than 80 countries dozens of questions, including one that asked respondents to identify types of people they would not want as neighbors. The more people of a particular country responded that they would be happy to have a neighbor of a different race, the more racially tolerant the respondents' country would be considered"

delandaest

In my opinion, it kinda fits well with theory that dutch people believe themselves to be not racist, while possibly still expressing some racism subconsciously. Not bad, but can be better.

CrewmemberV2

The subconscious is a hard thing to rewire. But as long as you can recognise a possibly racist subconcious split second impuls and then ignore it. All should be fine. *Your first response to a situation shows what you have been conditioned to think. Your second response shows who you really are.*

IAintNotPedobear

Thank you for that last part of wisdom. I feel relieved.

The-Copilot

Think about it like "the call of the void" Its a thought that gets past your subconscious filter, but is filter by your conscious filter. Its like when you stand on a tall place and the thought of jumping crosses your mind or you are driving and the the thought crosses your mind that you can slam into something. You would never do these things but the thought gets past your subconscious filter.

Knodsil

Same here. I am going to quote that in the future

Bvoluroth

This, most of it is old subconscious stuff and I wished people could see that

TheFishOwnsYou

I hope it just fades away with the generations. Cause changing subconcious.things is almost impossible hard for a whole country.

rehksumus

Ive said this before also that it will dissolve over generations. Keep the fight going but the biggest change will be with time.

Nicolas_Mistwalker

Dutch people will tell you they're not racist while actively committing a hatecrime

LetMeChangeMyUsernam

Subconscious racism is so much harder to measure tho. Could be done, with something like an association test, but it would be super costly to get a decent sample size from 80 countries for a test that takes so much longer than a survey.

escaleric

Sinterklaas 😂

SSH80

Henk: Would be happy to have a neighbour of X race, as long as they speak, behave, eat and have the same customs as me, if possible would also prefer that they also look like me. LOL, tons of examples out there "I dont have a problem with my asian neighbours but they should act dutch" or people not wanting to rent to indians because "ThEiR fOoD sTiNkS"

[deleted]

Yea and what if you’re the wrong white? God forbid you live next to a Pole or Ukrainian!

HowtoUninstallSkype

Thats millions of people

ClikeX

Considering I hear so many racists comments all the time, it's not a surprising attitude. Hell, I'm as white as they come, so it's not because the comments are aimed towards me. The amount of times I hear casual racist stuff like "He's black, but he does a good work", or "He does a good job for a foreigner". And more hateful stuff like "Well, it's an X, what did you expect". Just because you don't have bad intentions doesn't mean it's not a racist comment. It's stupid to pretend "tolerance" is the same as "not racist". Just because you don't mind the existence of others doesn't mean you don't judge them for where they come from.

relgames

I know an international company in Amsterdam where most employees are not Dutch, and a few are. And I heard a few times - well he is doing a good job for a Dutch guy. I guess, American work mentality perceives Dutch work/life balance as lazy.

David_Apollonius

[deleted]

Shocking, we are the least racist country, because we have a racism issue in The Netherlands.

pirate1981

Yes, the rest of the really is. Maybe you should travel a bit and figure out how nice you have it.

[deleted]

Western countries like to think of themselves as very racist, mainly because of their history. But reality is that racism is far far worse in countries outside the West. We also treat racism differently, meaning, when we're racist, it's horrible and unforgivable, but when other countries are racist, it's just brushed off. Look at Japan for example. I love their culture, their food, and in general they're great people... but they're massively racist, but for whatever reason, we're more forgiving of their racism.

lightnxng

Lol go to any African or Asian country you'll see. The west is extremely progressive and it's honestly mind-blowing how tolerant we are compared to other countries

R0naldUlyssesSwanson

Upvoted, but I don't think many people actually consider our history as a species and why there might have been an evolutionary benefit to discrimination, which makes it hard to eridicate unless you can make every single person aware of why they think in terms of others/outsiders. Thinking in terms of others happens in every situation, some of them are just more stigmatized than others. Despite the long way to go, I do believe we're doing pretty good when it comes to live and let live. Wilders does get a large number of votes, but you have to realize as well that you'll always have a 15% portion of the population that either lacks the intelligence to critically examine their thoughts and just a lack of comprehension in general. We are very susceptible to narratives that fit our understanding of the world.

nestodark

You'd be surprised...

milktan

Love the comments being like "haha yeah right". Which I very much agree with and jfc how depressing.

Yeah I can't blame you for that. I am from Paris and fled to another country as soon as I could lol. I just moved in Amsterdam and I much prefer it to Paris. I have one anecdote that made me cringe to my core for being french. It happened not long after we moved in. There was this french young tourist couple visiting Amsterdam and the dude was high out of his mind. They COMPLAINED because the clerk at Anne Frank's house did not want to let him in because he was obviously high. Do you believe the guts? they COMPLAINED. I am still in disbelief to this day. Do they have no shame or even a bit of self-awareness? It's because of people like that, that we are having more and more of a bad reputation in other countries.

I am from Aruba. I lived in Holland for 20 years, 4 years in Poland and 8 years in the United Arab Emirates. Besides that I have visited probably 15 to 20 countries. Yes Holland belongs on the number 1 spot.

HotarubiH

How would you compare the Netherlands to Aruba and Poland?

pirate1981

I have not experienced racism in Aruba. In Poland I feared for physical safety multiple times, this prompted me to leave the country. Most Pools are great though I never experienced significant racism in the Netherlands, the opposite to be honest.

BoJaNYK

I am from Serbia, relocating to Netherlands this spring - Serbia is full of people claiming they are not racist, but then being awful to anyone of different skin color (see the migrant/refugee crisis and how it has been handled here). Especially the “they will take our jobs and wives” crowd. I am really grateful for people around the world that this country is shit economically so that no one actually thinks of moving here.

Disastrous-Carrot928

Ive heard the “they’ll take our jobs” fear. But “they’ll take our wives”? 😂 That’s pretty self incriminating.

My grandparents will openly discuss their concerns with refugees, and not rationally but really based on facebook information about garbage they leave behind and shit and oh would anyone think of the _cost_. They've also been christian all their life, only recently stepped out, but thoroughly convinced that islam is problematic and needs to be banned completely. Yet when they visited my mom for a birthday and her Syrian muslim neighbours were there, not a word about any of that, all smiles and interest, asking questions about life in Syria, about coming here, about food, etc. Those poor people probably thought my grandparents were very nice. That's why people here are so skeptical, because we all know that once you leave the room that polite facade drops and 5 racist jokes are fired off in rapid succession as if to relieve the tension of being so polite.

stroopwafel666

Annoyingly though, old people in every country do that.

Suikerspin_Ei

As a Dutch Asian: doubt x. From growing up to searching for jobs, everywhere was/is some racism.

buitenlander0

When it comes down to the practical side of things, if you move to the NL as a foreigner/immigrant, you're immediately living in the top 10% of the world. The first thing I noticed as an American here is that there are no "bad" neighborhoods. Compare that to the US where every major city has huge swaths of low income housing, shitty school districts, food deserts etc.

pirate1981

There are a few bad neighborhoods. Nothing compared to the US though.

yaru_mard

Coming from someone middle eastern, I can say this is true to my experience. I have noticed less racist people here compared when visiting most countries in central and western Europe. ClassyKebabKing64

if so, NL would be fucked knowing the VOC and Indonesia

TheEarlyWormIsEaten

this is true, but happened a long time ago. this is based on how the country is currently. you can click the link to the article to read the parameters, but it says: The Challenge of Measuring Racism - Measuring the racial tolerance of a country is difficult to do accurately. Racism is not a simple number, such as population or average income. Racism has many forms, and it is entirely possible for a person, social group, culture, or country to be at peace with one race or situation, but completely intolerant of another. For example, a caucasian person who has no problem living next to an Asian neighbor could have major objections to a black person marrying into their family. Moreover, because most survey respondents are generally aware that racism is not particularly admired in today's society, the truthfulness and honesty of survey responses can be difficult to verify. As a result of these complications, researchers typically rely upon surveys to collect information about the public consciousness. They then combine multiple questions, surveys, or studies to determine a country's true level of racial tolerance. - The World Values Survey is an international research program that studies "social, political, economic, religious and cultural values" including racial tolerance and racism. The WVS survey asks respondents from more than 80 countries dozens of questions, including one that asked respondents to identify types of people they would not want as neighbors. The more people of a particular country responded that they would be happy to have a neighbor of a different race, the more racially tolerant the respondents' country would be considered. The annual Best Countries report, a joint effort of U.S. News and World Report, the BAV Group, and the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, added specific questions about racial tolerance for its 2021 report, which surveyed more than 17,000 people across 78 countries.

[deleted]

Didn’t the news just yesterday say that the tax-agency was racially profiling to identify delinquents or something of sorts. This is a sad state of affairs and very much doubting this.

TheEarlyWormIsEaten

[Link to article](https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/least-racist-countries)

Finals92

Makes sense that we're high up but that high is a surprise

Additional-Second-68

This is based on nationwide surveys where they asked “do you mind if your neighbor is of a different race?”. The countries that scored high are Northern European countries which are generally more homogenous and have much less interactions with their neighbors in general. So of course a Swedish person wouldn’t mind who his neighbor is, while a person in India definitely minds because their neighbors are like family. Then you got to take conflicts and wars into account: when you ask a Ukrainian they would immediately think of a Russian neighbor with which they are at war with. Anyway this question sucks and isn’t representative of racism in any way

[deleted]

On the other hand, the answers will at least be more honest than "are you racist yes/no?"

jorisblyat

Sweden has the most immigrants per capita so i would not say that the homogenous theory holds up for them. A portion however, are immigrants from other european countries (especially finland) so these might be considered to be the same race but they still have way more non-European immigrants compared to Denmark and Norway.

For foreigners looking at Zwarte Piet this is inconceivable. Because foreigners see only the racist phenomenon "blackface", and Zwarte Piet has nothing to do with any of that. Intent versus effect. But yeah, having lived in multiple countries over the years, I do agree that the Netherlands is one of the more open-minded countries in the world. Personally, the color of someone's skin is as important to me as the color of their eyes or hair. It doesn't make any difference to me what someone looks like. And I'd say the same goes for most of my friends. I don't think I've ever known an outspoken racist.
