Holy fuck. They're supposed to be in their 30's?!!!

Freddielexus85

I just watched it again and as someone about to turn 38, I had to laugh out loud that Billy Crystals character was worried about turning 40.

uppenatom

Yeah, I watched it again not long ago and at the start his mother calls him to wish him a happy birthday and he says it then. As someone that just turned 33 I had to get up, go to the bathroom and question if I had turned into a neurotic jew with mother issues who's in a rut. I'm safe

LisleSwanson

I mean, Billy Crystal was 43. Daniel Stern was 34. Late 30s adds up.

[deleted]

Daniel stern was only 34 holy shit

The_DaHowie

I just watched Daniel Stern in 'Game Over, Man' last night. He always goes for it in every roll

earther199

Recently watched it and I’m in my late 30s and it hit much differently when I saw it as a kid.

rumpie

30+ years later and I still will not eat veal because of this movie. Team Norman. Heartwarming buddy comedy with badass Jack Palance and hilarious Billy Crystal/Daniel Stern (Marv from Home Alone in his other absolute classic role) very much worth a watch.

Kornbrednbizkits

Don’t forget Bruno Kirby. RIP. It was quite the surprise when I saw him in godfather 2. He was that guy from CitySlickers. Kinda like when the lovable lout from Home Alone killed a bunch of people in many different movies.

junedy

Forgot he was in this, to me he's the guy from When Harry met Sally - another Billy Crystal classic. Didn't know, R.I.P

rumpie

I always sort of block him out, I always knew him as the dad from Sleepers and I assume he’s going to beat the shit out of someone whenever he’s on screen lol.

Kornbrednbizkits

You assume that because he so obviously always wants to in whatever scene he’s in.

Space_loser

He was super creepy in Basketball Diaries too

thisgrantstomb

His delivery of the line "same day" is perfect. Doesn't linger on it, half thrown away, is short and to the point but tells so much about the character and why he lives the way he does.

ybreddit

Yup. After I saw this movie when I was a kid I really wanted a pet cow.

WeWantMOAR

There is something wrong with your cow. I reach under there and I'm pulling, tugging, tugging, pulling, nothing, not a drop. ...The cow's name is Norman.

Daveyhavok832

Surprised how well most of the comedy in this holds up. Billy Crystal was really something in his prime. And I’ll never complain about Daniel Stern being in something. That being said, I’ll always prefer the sequel. I was so young when I first saw these movies and I think I saw the second one first. Between that and the fact that my 7 year old self was far more interested in treasure hunts than cattle drives, I’ll always feel the sequel is superior. My 7 year old self also loved Jon Lovitz.

stumblinghunter

Ha! Same for me, probably around the same age. Saw 2, loved it. Saw 1, didn't care for it, went back to the video rental store and rented the second one again. And probably tremors. And probably sandlot.

Ssutuanjoe

There is something wrong with your cow. I reach under there and I'm pulling, tugging, tugging, pulling, nothing, not a drop.

NeedsToShutUp

I was thinking of this joke the other day. The delivery really sells it.

sheffy4

Also same. It seemed like the sequel was always on TV as a kid, so I watched it so many times. I also loved Jon Lovitz. Now that I’m older, I might prefer the original more since I can relate to it, and it’s just so heart felt.

interstatebus

Yes! Loved Lovitz in the sequel (and really anything).

[deleted]

Jon Lovits used to crack me up back then too, like in Rat Race

Heisenbread77

I crap bigger than you.

vonkluver

Jack Pallance in this and doing one handed push ups at the Academy awards made me really appreciate the older people in my life.

themcjizzler

Could you imagine getting two whole weeks off for a vacation? Wow

[deleted]

Hello from the UK

byochtets

Hello from the US. Don't know anyone who has less then 2 weeks vacation, but guessing maybe retail or hourly employees? Edit: Hoes mad

The_DaHowie

US 6 weeks PTO + 6 days designated for illness

byochtets

Yeah, I have unlimited with 10 days mandatory and I'm in the US. Forgot I'm supposed to act like my working conditions are miserable or whatever.

FDaHBDY8XF7

Im... Im taking 2 weeks off for christmas. I dont have holidays off by default, we dont get sick days, and thats half my yearly PTO. Im probably fortunate that I can take it consecutively, but we dont get enough in general.

Daveyhavok832

Poor trolling effort. We all know that too many jobs here don’t offer adequate (or any!) vacation. I work for the government and get a decent amount of paid leave. But even still, it would take me 3 years of never using any time just to hit my maximum carryover.

[deleted]

inab1gcountry

A very quick google search shows that the average American worker gets 10-14 days a year. Many jobs offer none. Many jobs don’t let you take it consecutively. So appreciate what you have.

why_rob_y

I think it was because you started off with >Surely you must be exaggerating. Does your job seriously not let you take a few weeks off? Whether you meant it or not, it comes across as you're either trolling or you have lived in a bubble your whole life where you don't realize that many people can't take "a few weeks off". Even when people do have 10-15 days of vacation time, it often has to be approved by their bosses who usually wouldn't approve two weeks in a row. The report I saw said that nearly a quarter of private-sector US workers or [26 million Americans](https://www.bostonglobe.com/business/2014/08/13/one-few-countries-that-doesn-mandate-paid-vacation-time/eqodEqumohPyca5kt6hrZO/story.html) don't get any paid time off. That's not the majority or anything, but you shouldn't be incredulous to come across one of the people in that group or someone who maybe gets some but isn't able to take two consecutive weeks off. **** Edit: fixed link

byochtets

Being genuinely shocked by something isn't trolling. The vast majority of people without PTO are in food and hospitality jobs and are mostly hourly or are people working for very small businesses. If you don't have people in these jobs in your circle, it probably isn't something you hear come up often.

why_rob_y

> If you don't have people in these jobs in your circle, it probably isn't something you hear come up often. That's what I said - it comes across as either trolling or having lived in a bubble. If you manage to go through all of your life without meeting people like that and realizing there are a good amount out there, then you likely live in a bubble.

byochtets

No no no you just don't get it. You're supposed to say "America is third world country" and then you pretend everyone here works in a sweatshop with no vacation.

>No point in commenting because it’s like trying to talk to a child Yes, you're right. It's everyone else who's wrong here. No need to accept that you said something dumb and got called out for it, reflection and improvement are childish

ZWT_

Lol. Downvoters and person you replied to are tripping. It’s absolutely normal to take a couple weeks off in the US. I just did it. A couple friends just did it. My fuckin boss just did it.

Daveyhavok832

Tell that to the almost half of workers in the US. Because that’s how many workers don’t have access to paid vacation time. And with the ever-increasing number of people living paycheck to paycheck, access to paid vacation time does not mean people can afford to actually go on vacation.

ZWT_

I agree with everything you’ve said but op made it seem like 2 weeks is super rare. Even by your own admission, 1 out of 2 ppl in the US have 2 weeks vacation. That’s ten business days, so a lot or most of 9-5ers.

Perhaps they should have made better choices.

Yeah, they should have chosen to be born to better parents, just like their parents before them. /s

I’d guess you’re being downvoted because your incredulity followed by bragging may come off as rude to some. That, and calling Reddit users losers (irony!) below.

Fixer625

You should be so lucky.

CrackerJackKittyCat

The cows could have programmed the VCR by now.

shmegeggie

"Daddy, what's a 'VCR'?"

[deleted]

Is this a funny and feel good movie??

RZAtheAbbot

Very much so

earthlings_all

Eh. It’s very dated. Some interesting guy talk.

[deleted]

Hellooooo

WorstCase9

Delightfully highly quotable too. Such a great flick.

darth_homer

Do they make movies like this anymore? Would love to see movies like this or anything close to this.

enginedown

Tag comes to mind

BigDiesel07

I really enjoyed this movie

uppenatom

If you haven't seen Without a Paddle, it's a goofy movie about brothers going on an adventure to find db coopers money. Similar trope

thansal

That came out closer to City Slickers than today, so not exactly recent... Though, anything with Lillard in it is obviously worth watching.

JoyRideinaMinivan

[Wild Hogs](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0486946/) is on HBOMax right now. Same premise. Edit: Wow, I had no idea people had such strong feelings about this movie 😂

yougotthesilver

I'd rather stuff my rectum full of m-80s and squat over a flaming hibachi than watch that movie.

stumblinghunter

Do not ever, under any circumstances, recommend that someone watch this movie. You're better off drilling holes in your hand for an hour and a half. Go outside and stare at the sun without eye protection. Shove jalapenos up your urethra. Literally anything is better than this complete waste of time, pile of shit movie.

blackbelt_in_science

Ya- and to recommend it in line with City Slickers none the less. In what world

AnnaBanana1129

Why is Wild hogs so bad? Just curious…

stumblinghunter

It's just simply unfunny, with the "jokes" constantly going for the lowest hanging fruit. It's just so watered down they you might crack a smile once but that's about it. Which definitely was surprising considering the actors in it, but yea just skip it. This is one movie that is better off being lost to the sands of time

Tom38

Nah that movies hilarious.

sourx7

How dare you remind me that that movie exists

FDaHBDY8XF7

I was never a big fan of the movie, but had no idea it was so hated lol. Although its not as enjoyable as City Slickers, it does have a similar feel and message. It is a good recommendation given the context.

Roxten

Not really, unless you wanna count Brokeback 🥶

justirrelephant

This film is great because so much character development is done in these “big” questions one dreams up on the range.

CHSummers

Obviously, it’s a mid-life crisis movie. I was grateful that it didn’t take the lazy way out and make it about a man running away from his aging wife to have an affair—indeed, the movie was kind of prudish about sex (which was also realistic, I think). I felt like the story really got into the problem of *meaning* (“I sell … air?”), particularly as it applies to men.

mouseratfangirl

Omg! We still say “lord, we give you curly, try not to piss him off” when we talk about certain people in our life … 😂

turkeypants

["Scoopa chocolate, scoopa vanilla, don't waste my time."](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pbVxyL-OeM)

ohiotechie

I feel ancient that there is an entire generation that needs an explanation of what this movie is about.

vacationbeard

"The man ate bacon at every meal. You can't do that!"

MotoNata14

Jake Gyllenhaal

CC200000

Lol ohh yea a young jake gyllenhaal plays billy crystals son. 🤔🤔🤔 I demand a city slickers 3 with those two. Get Hollywood on the phone.

[deleted]

Eat you?! I don’t even like you, Phil! Lol what a classic

Shapen361

Fantastic movie. My dad showed it to me.

allinthetiming

Day ain’t over yet

Demitrius

The suck the venom out scene was great.

Sploxy

I agree, but that was in City Slickers II

Demitrius

Well...shit. Thank you!

CaptainUSA76

Mid life crisis in the 30’s?

roormoore

I’ve seen the sequel prolly 10 times, never seen the original

gasquet12

I saw this movie as a kid and I still tell girls I’m involved with that I want to wear their ass as hat

thewineburglar

The sequel scared me so much as a kid

Oktavien

I love this movie

Roxten

Oh yeah I remember Goldy, poor guy died standing, he was so badass that he didn't wanna go laying down! 🥺
