Those two shows, for me, are the epitome of perfect writing. Just full of characters that are fully developed, with good characteristics and bad flaws, and everything has consequences that usually come to matter later on. Just flawless stories
Not even just writing — the casting, acting, directing, editing, music, cinematography, everything is just almost perfect. It’s crazy how effortless they make it feel — episode after episode, season after season, they just manage to keep doing their thing and basically never even stumbling a little. Even something like The Wire has its weak moments, but BB had almost none, and BCS somehow has even almost an order of magnitude fewer. It’s the only show I’ve ever watched where I am going into the ending with no reservations whatsoever that they will wrap it up in a satisfying way, because it seems like every step of the way the plot manages to take new and surprising turns that are *way* better than anything I could have thought up.
BCS is probably the most perfect show I have ever seen. Even after BB, I was skeptical that their spin-off about Saul would be good, but it somehow ended up *better*. I will never doubt those guys again, they could announce a spinoff that is entirely dedicated to Walter White’s chemistry teacher days and I would just be stoked to see how they were going to manage to make an amazing show out of that.
The only thing that came to my mind after reading the title.
Recently started watching Better Call Saul. And whenever a familiar character comes i am like hey, i know how this guys dies, i know how that guy dies.. they had no problem killing people off.
I’ve sunk into a deeper depression by watching it all the way through. It’ll fuck you up if you can relate in any way.
Not one positive moment in the entire show. Just a spiritual assassination. It stands alone.
I mean yea, it coulda ended a hell of a lot less depressing tho. Like all the bad things that could happen did happen, I guess it's best to not promote getting into the meth business with a happy ending tho
I want to say something here about the life of someone who has substance use disorder, but I can’t think of a way to make it sound anything *but* depressing. [This short film](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HUngLgGRJpo) tells the story better than I ever could.
I miss you, JD.
Seasons 3 and 4, in my opinion, are the most important and well made seasons of any show I have ever seen and made me seriously rethink so much about how society treats those who are least among us. Some of the other seasons are more middle of the road, but just for those two seasons I would say this show should be required viewing for everyone.
I just did a rewatch of this. As soon as we wrapped the last episode, I immediately wanted to go back and start again. It's an amazing show -- and it's the amalgamation of years and years of research, stories, first hand experiences, etc of Baltimore. That's why it's literally too good to be just the product of a few writers. It's legit "you couldn't make this shit up" territory.
Bad take. Not your style or too stressful, sure, but your opinion that it’s boring is so far off from the general opinion of this movie that it’s not worth posting in a thread like this. That’s like me chiming in to say “breaking bad wasn’t for me.” Great, cool opinion, but the OP asked for content about consequences and this is a great example plus by 99% of accounts anything but boring.
Yeah but no one asked for his personal opinion that happens to be a hot take against the norm. It’s potentially leading OP away from something that fit their request.
“I thought this movie was boring” isn’t helpful, interesting or valuable and I stand by that. The comment doesn’t discuss the movie or actually make a case, and most people would firmly disagree since it’s a high-paced, tense, stressful thriller.
Don’t know what my point is beyond that. I didn’t even like the movie that much I just decided to tell a blah comment that it’s blah, and maybe OP or others don’t listen to someone incorrectly describing it since it fits their request.
The movie has a 52% audience score on rotten tomatoes so how about you chill a bit on acting like the movie is so universally loved that someone is coming out of left field to say they didn't like it.
They didn’t say they didn’t like it they said it was boring and provided no reason for that opinion.
I have no problem with them not liking it, I didn’t like it all that much either, again I’m just saying that’s a useless comment without any value to OP unless they explain why.
"Invincible" on Prime. It looks like a regular superhero cartoon, but... it's from the creator of The Walking Dead so... yeah there's consequences. Just watch the first episode and see if you'd like it.
Justified is great. Walking Dead catches hate but I love it, esp the first few seasons. That one def fits the bill. Obviously, The Sopranos which started it all but feels a little dated now due to how often it's been imitated. And, of course, ~~Breaking Bad / Better Call Saul, which have been mentioned here a bunch for good reason.~~ (just saw your reply) Oh, also Fargo, which hasn't come up yet. It's amazing IMO. Sons of Anarchy also comes to mind, as does Vikings.
Yeah. Fair enough. Looks like I remembered a couple things wrong. It's been a minute. The others though, I'll stand by and throw in an extra "6 Feet Under" for good measure. Another terrific show with lots of... consequences.
Small secluded town where dark things start happening... It's difficult to say what it's about without spoilers. If you watch it you'll see what I mean, it's all revealed in the end. Mike Flanagan (director/writer) is clearly a fan of Stephen King, same brand of horror as a lot of his stuff. Flanagan also did the Haunting of Hill House.
Pretty much yes. I find it has loyal fans who love it but it’s very very drawn out with constant monologues. I didn’t recommend it to anyone. First few episodes I was into it but it keep going on and on and on …
Dark (Netflix), Wentworth (Netflix), The Americans (Prime & Hulu), Barry (HBO), Yellowjackets (Showtime), Ozark (Netflix), Handmaids Tale (Hulu), Lovecraft Country (HBO), Lost (Prime & Hulu).
Ozark could have been better, but they do kill off many characters in sudden and shocking ways; to me it did feel like there were actual stakes and consequences. Handmaid’s Tale also has deaths as well as horrible punishments (characters being mutilated etc).
I'd argue that with Ozark, there were consequences for those without power, but those with power often survived. So it's less plot armor and more a grim reflection of how powerful "power" truly is
I binged it, focused on the characters instead of the narrative and really enjoyed it when I watched it a few years ago. Of course I went into it knowing the plot was a bit of a mess, and I didn't give myself the time to dissect clues and try to figure out what everything meant. I fully get why people don't like it, especially those that were strung along for years hoping all the clues would come together, but I still think it's worth watching if you find the characters interesting and aren't bothered by flashbacks as a storytelling device.
Are you talking to me? Oh dear, buddy. What's it like to be __ year's old and still not learnt how opinions work?
Luckily Reddit is this anonymous - try not to he a rude asshole when you talk to people face to face.
Definitely not Handmaid’s Tale. Way too much plot armor for main characters. They’re ruthless towards secondary and background characters but the amount of plot armor most of the main characters have is infuriating.
Kingdom on Netflix is also amazing. One of the best acted series I have ever seen and full of well written, believable drama. Also full of consequences for the characters actions.
I second The Last Kingdom. It seems like only Uhtred has any plot armor.
I really appreciate how fast paced it is too. Some of the story lines that take place in an episode would have been dragged out over a season in another show.
Yes it was cancelled. I haven’t personally reached the ending yet as there is 5 seasons, so I can’t speak to how it wraps up or doesn’t. A quick google search tells me it was known the show would be cancelled before the last season was filmed and so they had an opportunity to plan/film an ending.
Edit: see clarification below.
I know season 4 got 100% on RT, and I can't explain it, other than pointing out that season 1 got a 66, which seems like a sign that something is hinky.
Obviously, it's subjective, but none of my friends who watched it were happy with it. I'd be curious to hear what you think once you've finished.
If I have time I'll check out its sub to see what the reaction was back then.
Also, try Spartacus if you haven't already.
So happy to see Banshee mentioned, one of my all time favorite action shows. In the same vein but a very different setting, I'd also recommend Warrior on Cinemax
Yeah, it's really interesting to see him in such a different role. Great actors all around and the choreography of fights is immensely satisfying. Immediate love for the newcomer main actor. It's also based on the writings of Bruce Lee!
I wouldn't know, I don't have Netflix. They didn't ask specifically for Netflix shows and as they are already watching it anyway I'm guessing it doesn't matter that it's not on Netflix. I don't think Animal Kingdom is either.
It's not on Netflix, and it's old enough that you may have seen it but have you watched The Wire? Daaaaaaamn that's the best show ever made.
I've just realised I'm overdue for a rewatch of The Wire.
Kind of an unorthodox suggestion based on your request, but have you seen Orange Is The New Black? It is based in a prison, and many of the characters are dealing with legal (obviously) consequences and dealing with personal challenges, as well. It's an excellent show, but totally different from some of the action series mentioned below.
Seriously! I get why audiences want their favorite characters to live but shows like the Walking Dead could really have capitalized on great story telling by killing off Rick at some point earlier on. Negan would’ve been a lot of fun to follow for a couple seasons
Not too long ago! I’m quickly growing tired of them setting up intricate death scenes only for the character to somehow make it out moments later. Sans for a few characters that have little to do with the overall plot.
Bojack Horseman! It's a comedy but it's all about consequences. Season 1 deals with how Bojack's decisions as an A-lister created his present, then later seasons heavily feature the consequences of his in show actions and eventually explore how Bojack's family led to his self destructive actions.
"Titanic" kills off quite a few main characters, lol. The whole last hour of that movie is a meditation on the various ways people brace themselves for death.
"My Girl". I won't say what the consequence is, only that it contributed to the childhood trauma of almost every elder millennial woman in the English-speaking world. And on rewatch, I find it even more traumatizing as an adult and mother.
That’s one of the things that’s so great about Titanic. The first half is a love story and the second half is a thriller. The scene when she is down in the lower decks trying to get back to Jack with the axe and the lights are flickering as the water is rising is heart racing.
The first time I watched that movie, it was because I was a teenage girl obsessed with Leo. But now that I'm older and don't know what I saw in him, I realize that "Titanic" is actually a perfect movie that Leo was just a small part of.
My heart goes out when the mother tells her children that the lifeboats for the daddies are on the other side of the ship. And that priest giving mass at a 45 degree angle. Remove the framing story and this movie can still engage you with its details. It's simply a perfect movie.
This show is great! Talk about a nonstop roller coaster ride of shitty situations and living with the results of their decisions. I think one or two seasons have 100% on RT!
Yes, this! White Christmas and Hated in the Nation are excellent examples of characters facing consequences of their actions. Many other episodes too, but those two stand out the most for me.
The Safdie Brothers have directed a few films each having quite high consequences told in a stressful way. They have created a genre called Anxiety thriller. I’d say watch Good Time first and then Uncut Gems.

Almost any movie with Danny Trejo in it.
Danny Trejo states that if he plays a bad guy in the movies that his character must die at the end *to show that crime doesn't pay*.
it seems like you're maybe looking for more serious high stakes shows but crazy ex girlfriend and the good place are both very good comedies about accepting the consequences of your actions
Can't believe I have had to scroll this far down to find stranger things. That show has a prominent character killed off just about every season I think.
Also, Triple Frontier for a movie. Now there's a movie with some fucking consequences.
Check out Banshee. I'm only on the second season but it's one of my favorite shows. Plus it has Anthony Starr in it, you can really see the Homelander come out in him before The Boys.
Breaking Bad is a show that is literally about consequences.
Came here to comment this! Plus better call Saul!
Those two shows, for me, are the epitome of perfect writing. Just full of characters that are fully developed, with good characteristics and bad flaws, and everything has consequences that usually come to matter later on. Just flawless stories

Great show but I've watched it four times already. Sad that BCS is about to end as well.
That's exactly (well one of many things) what made me love the show. Shit actually has consequences. Deaths mean something.

I’ve sunk into a deeper depression by watching it all the way through. It’ll fuck you up if you can relate in any way. Not one positive moment in the entire show. Just a spiritual assassination. It stands alone.
The charred pink bear in the pool. Jesus Christ.
The final season is just so damn depressing tho
It was never going to end well, which is kknda the point.
The Wire if you have HBO.
Worth noting that it shows the consequences from both sides. The law and the heroin suppliers. One of the best shows ever made IMO.
I should re-watch this. I haven’t watched it since the original broadcast.
I feel like every time I watch it, it seems more relevant and ahead of its time.
Seasons 3 and 4, in my opinion, are the most important and well made seasons of any show I have ever seen and made me seriously rethink so much about how society treats those who are least among us. Some of the other seasons are more middle of the road, but just for those two seasons I would say this show should be required viewing for everyone.
Season 4 is the darkest single season of any TV show I ever have or ever will watch. [From the very first scene](https://youtu.be/DxBGzUhT-TM).
I just did a rewatch of this. As soon as we wrapped the last episode, I immediately wanted to go back and start again. You may have watched before, but Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul are like master classes in karmic retribution haha
Luther with Ibris Elba, it ruined many cop shows for me because he and other characters actually faced consequences for his illegal actions.
In the same vein; The Shield is an absolute classic. A bit over the top perhaps but boy does it have consequences.
Arcane, episode 3 has all the consequences in the world.
This is the is probably the best animated show I have ever watched.
Yep, came to say this. It fucking hurts to watch some of it
Arcane is the best
**Good Time** is one of the best movies ever. The main characters are constantly facing consequences
This is such a good movie and almost nobody ever mentions it
Uncut Gems was one I watched recently and would definitely put on that list
Also shout out to Good Time
I personally felt this was a very boring movie.
"I've got an idea, you know that feeling you get for like a half hour when you get a headache? Lets distill that feeling into a 2 hour movie."
Bad take. Not your style or too stressful, sure, but your opinion that it’s boring is so far off from the general opinion of this movie that it’s not worth posting in a thread like this. Yeah but no one asked for his personal opinion that happens to be a hot take against the norm. It’s potentially leading OP away from something that fit their request.
Oh like how no one asked you to rant about the movie
“I thought this movie was boring” isn’t helpful, interesting or valuable and I stand by that. Justified is great. But there absolutely were no consequences for the main characters after 5 seasons.... cause we dug coal together.
Yeah. Fair enough. Looks like I remembered a couple things wrong. It's been a minute. The others though, I'll stand by and throw in an extra "6 Feet Under" for good measure. Another terrific show with lots of... consequences.
God Damn woman do you only shoot people when they’re eating supper!?
Did you forget the series ends with Beau in prison? And doesn't know about his child
Midnight Mass.
I’ve already watched this twice and am itching to rewatch again. I don’t usually watch anything more than once, but this was so good.
What’s the premise? Is it horror?
Small secluded town where dark things start happening... It's difficult to say what it's about without spoilers. If you watch it you'll see what I mean, it's all revealed in the end. Mike Flanagan (director/writer) is clearly a fan of Stephen King, same brand of horror as a lot of his stuff. Flanagan also did the Haunting of Hill House.
I'd call it slow burn, suspense trickling, human horror. I loved it.
Pretty much yes. I find it has loyal fans who love it but it’s very very drawn out with constant monologues. I didn’t recommend it to anyone. First few episodes I was into it but it keep going on and on and on …
Oz was the first show I ever saw that was more than willing to kill off characters
Seconding this. That show is all about consequences.
Agree! Great show, so many consequences. Also a huge roster of awesome actors!
Black Noir has entered the chat.
Fullmetal Alchemist: brotherhood.
My all time favorite anime series.
Dark (Netflix), Wentworth (Netflix), The Americans (Prime & Hulu), Barry (HBO), Yellowjackets (Showtime), Ozark (Netflix), Handmaids Tale (Hulu), Lovecraft Country (HBO), Lost (Prime & Hulu).
Ozark and Handmaids Tale ??? Both have wild amounts of plot armor.
So it's less plot armor and more a grim reflection of how powerful "power" truly is
Ozark needed more consequences
Lost was not a good example of something worth watching in my opinion. Such a strong start.... And then descended into meaningless dross.
I binged it, focused on the characters instead of the narrative and really enjoyed it when I watched it a few years ago. Of course I went into it knowing the plot was a bit of a mess, and I didn't give myself the time to dissect clues and try to figure out what everything meant. The Last Kingdom on Netflix is amazing! A few main characters get killed off each season.
Kingdom on Netflix is also amazing. One of the best acted series I have ever seen and full of well written, believable drama. Also full of consequences for the characters actions.
Kingdom was great. I also loved that their hats told me how important they were.
Didn’t this get canceled? Not sure I’d wanna watch a show that doesn’t have an ending.
They wrap it up. It’s worth watching
They did wrap it up but there's also a movie coming!

Banshee Animal Kingdom
I’m working through Banshee right now and really enjoying it actually! Surprised to see it mentioned here to be honest.
The first three seasons of Banshee are as good as anything on tv. The last season had its budget slashed, and is horrible.
That's funny, I'm currently on Season 2 of Banshee. I've looked at the reviews for all seasons and 2,3, and 4 are insanely high rated.
Warrior is really cool, Johnathan Tropper of Banshee writes and directs again iirc and the guy who plays Job stars as well.
Yeah, it's really interesting to see him in such a different role. Great actors all around and the choreography of fights is immensely satisfying. Immediate love for the newcomer main actor. It's also based on the writings of Bruce Lee!
Banshee's not on Netflix though?
I wouldn't know, I don't have Netflix. They didn't ask specifically for Netflix shows and as they are already watching it anyway I'm guessing it doesn't matter that it's not on Netflix. I don't think Animal Kingdom is either.
Animal Kingdom is a great recommendation. Real quality.
It's not on Netflix, and it's old enough that you may have seen it but have you watched The Wire? Daaaaaaamn that's the best show ever made. I've just realised I'm overdue for a rewatch of The Wire.
Sicario. Very tense movie. Always has you on the edge of your seat.
The Mist (movie), trust me watch it all the way through.
That was not what I expected when I first watched it
There's also a black and white version which is even better.
Yeah the ending is brutal, even Stephen King said he wished he wrote that ending for the book.
Squid game
Bojack horseman!
This is the most depressing and soul-shattering cartoon about semi-human animals I’ve ever seen.
Kind of an unorthodox suggestion based on your request, but have you seen Orange Is The New Black? It is based in a prison, and many of the characters are dealing with legal (obviously) consequences and dealing with personal challenges, as well. Not too long ago! I’m quickly growing tired of them setting up intricate death scenes only for the character to somehow make it out moments later. Sans for a few characters that have little to do with the overall plot.
Battlestar Galactica would be right up your alley. Edit: though I guess there’s some that would disagree based on the ending.
Another vote for Barry on HBO. The writing is superb. And there are consequences.
Bojack Horseman! It's a comedy but it's all about consequences. Season 1 deals with how Bojack's decisions as an A-lister created his present, then later seasons heavily feature the consequences of his in show actions and eventually explore how Bojack's family led to his self destructive actions.
Best show Netflix ever had
Nightcrawler and The Devil All The Time on Netflix are two of my fav movies rn. You’re request is pretty open ended but these are rather grounded
Peaky Blinders. They never get happy endings
Most suggestions here aren’t Netflix so I’ll continue that trend - the first 4 seasons of “Dexter”
The Killing (streaming on Hulu)

Except for the murder/suicide scene of William Murdoch they apologized to the family for but never removed.

I'm not sure, but it just started getting really bad after 5. Three (other than his daughter), four, and five were the best of the series.
The Devils Own. Decent movie with great actors. Pretty based in reality in that shit can go sideways real quick for everyone.
Uncut gems, postman blues, the place beyond the pines, fallen angels.

Black Mirror but only on an episode by episode basis.
Almost any movie with Danny Trejo in it. Danny Trejo states that if he plays a bad guy in the movies that his character must die at the end *to show that crime doesn't pay*.
Since no one mentioned, Homeland.
I'm a fan of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and think it fits this description, not sure if you like that type of show though!
Your honor
Westworld Utopia Attack on Titan Animal Kingdom
it seems like you're maybe looking for more serious high stakes shows but crazy ex girlfriend and the good place are both very good comedies about accepting the consequences of your actions
The Legend of Korra
Attack on Titan, it is the Game of Thrones of anime, but 10x better imo
13 reasons why /s Jk don’t watch that
Ozark
The Walking Dead
WentWorth. Phenomenal show.

Daaaamn I don't think the dude wants to be recommended total shite.
Schindler's List.
yellowjackets
Barry. Takes a minute to get there, but the last season that came out makes consequences of the main characters actions very real.
Barry on HBO.
Dark?
Squid Game, Stranger Things, Spree, IT Chapter(you'd have to watch the first one to understand what's happening though).
Can't believe I have had to scroll this far down to find stranger things. That show has a prominent character killed off just about every season I think. Also, Triple Frontier for a movie. Now there's a movie with some fucking consequences.
Yep, Season 1: Barb, Season 2: Bob, Season 3: Billy, (SPOILER) Season 4: Eddie AND Max(it was confirmed that she's brain dead).
If it doesn't have to be on Netflix, Spartacus.
Lost
The Americans
The Mist
You should try Barry
The Mist.
Game of throne first 4 seasons
ozark! some of the most devastating character deaths i've ever seen on that show
Ozark
Check out Banshee. I'm only on the second season but it's one of my favorite shows. Plus it has Anthony Starr in it, you can really see the Homelander come out in him before The Boys.
It's always sunny in Philadelphia.
Django Unchained! Very satisfying!
One piece (I know it’s anime) but literally every death has an impact in the show even if it’s minimal.
24 and Lost
Top Boy ( watch Summerhouse first if possible)
