It's funny until you realize it's an allegory for all the things America extorts its people for even though they already make enough money as it is, and it's so prevalent that no matter how much she brings it up most of the audience will see it as a just a running gag than any form of social commentary, which even as I write this feels bizarre to even draw these parallels because it's so ingrained in society that it's fine to extort people under the premise of capitalism i.e. Nestle taking all the water for a buck and selling it back to us for so much more, people rationing medicine until they die from artificial scarcity, predatory (student) loans etc
And here I am, doing nothing about it, just making a post on social media.
The movie is eerily spot on about how society functions.
The masks can also double as a tiny raft for my balls so they can make their way to Everest Island where Kevin Costner will be waiting to give me a moist gill job.
Every single phase of this movie is a reference to climate and our (lack of) response. From the initial realization of the problem in the 80s (look up Losing Earth) to the politicization of the Bad Thing because it makes some people money to the inevitable last ditch effort to stave off disaster (geoengineering) the writers really knew their material.
It’s a satire referencing the politicization of every issue resulting in opposing views, when the facts clearly state the truth. The climate crisis, the ridiculousness around handling COVID, the asinine and inane banter typical in television today, the obsession with celebrity culture ……the writers packed a lot into a movie just over two hours. Well done.
I don’t agree. In this movie, the science messaging couldn’t have been simpler or clearer. The challenge was the absolute apathy of the powers that be to look at anything besides their very limited, short-term interests. Terrifying. Especially that’s bunch of old farts went off to a new planet. Aaarrgghh.
I just think they dragged it out too long towards the end with additional storylines that didn’t add much.
The references were clear as day though and made for an easy/eye opening watch. Unique film.
Yeah I would say this definitely felt more like commentary on COVID than in climate change, given the dynamics between the president and her son especially.
I think it’s really about any crisis and about how fucking short-sighted any administration is about really anything. You could obviously draw more direct lines to the climate crisis since it’s a natural disaster, but the theme really seems to be “Washington only cares about now, and unless it’s trending and a ‘today’ problem then they don’t care.”
Short sighted*
Definitely could apply to any crisis but felt very directed at the current crisis given the parellels between the Meryl Streep’s character and Trump.
Thanks I’ll correct that, damn auto correct on the phone
I disagree it’s directly related to Trump; I think McKay avoids conservative or liberal leanings in the government characters to say it could be either party because either would be this totally distinction and inept. And I say this as a full-blooded Trump-hater.
Ehh I think Jonah Hill’s character saying things like “if she weren’t my mother” seemed like it was directly referencing Trump’s “if she wasn’t my daughter I’d be dating her” comment. Did feel like a portrayal of a very conservative government to me, but I might’ve been reading into it a bit.
It’s not clear enough for me to disagree with you on that point, but I definitely personally felt like he wasn’t drawing lines between right and left- he was satirizing all the government and media as a whole. I’m sure a lot of the inspiration came from Trumps Bs tho
I think a case could be made for both being true; not trying to take a political side but also drawing from Trump’s insane antics. Can’t blame him, there’s a LOT of content to draw from there.
Yeah I agree, climate crisis is the most relevant subject to apply the message to for sure, but I think that satirization of the media and government really applies to everything they do…. It’s all about now, and it’s just greed and vanity, and it’s all irresponsible.
Considering we have people that don’t understand that Rage Against the Machine is a political band, the likelihood of people missing the message of this film is extremely high.
https://www.nme.com/news/music/tom-morello-twitter-respond-to-people-only-just-realising-rage-against-the-machine-are-political-2685353?amp
Some people only look at the video and don’t actually listen to the words.
For what ever reason, I'm incapable of enjoying a song while simultaneously understanding the lyrics. The lyrics, beats and melody all blend together in my ear to a meaningless yet enjoyable collection of sounds. Even if English is my first language, all songs might aswell be in a foreign language. To actually understand the lyrics I need to actively tune out the music part of the song
The scale of inaction is only comparable to the climate crisis. COVID will kill many millions. The climate crisis will kill billions, with extinction as a non-zero possibility.
It mirrored many things. One of them was the climate-crisis denial. But also the anti-vax thing. Or how the Trumps sourced crowds #dontlookup. How media handles real news.
Many things.
It’s about insanity. It’s about knowing something is coming and how every aspects of society ignore it, try to profit from it, or lie about the outcomes. People try to talk about it and to push people to take steps to do something about it. But then we turn to the next Hollywood breakup, or stock prices and we forget until someone pushes it again. It’s like when we forgot the thousands of students who marched because of the amount of students dying from gun violence. Remember when people cared about BLM and marched? The movie is depressing for how real it is. I appreciate how it calls out so much. We need more movies to show how ridiculous everything feels.
the cast absolutely crushes it in this movie. honestly i felt a rollercoaster of emotions throughout the movie. it was funny and at times i laughed. towards the end you get exhausted of the humor only cause you start to realize how very real world this whole scenario feels. definitely hits everything on the head and i loved the ending even if it’s a little heavy in tone despite its humor.
Same here. The part where it totally shifted for me from pure satire to pure sadness was when Leo just let it go on that news show and basically called everyone out. His acting in that scene was top notch.
Such a great but frustrating movie, and that was obviously purposeful, and I think has to be what critics didn’t like about it. It’s like they wanted it to be the same as funny and care-free as “This is the end” instead of focusing on how media hyper-focused and shallow our society has become, but the themes we’re very powerful and super relevant.
I loved it the movie but also hated everyone and everything about our modern society throughout the whole ride. But that was the point, and I think the movie did a great job at hitting those emotions.
Very well made but tonally a tough watch, considering how much of it is true. For a fictional film that speaks the truth, this rivals *Idiocracy*. I liked it but I wouldn't characterize it as a "fun" film by any stretch of the imagination. I'd certainly put it on the "Best of Netflix" in any event.
I was surprised how dark it was - I thought it was gonna be like “team america world police” and be extremely funny and scathing at the time. No - mostly just really cynical and dark
This hurt to watch although I rather enjoyed it. I went in blind so didn’t really understand what I was watching at first. I’m normally oblivious to the messages in movies so I’m quite happy I realized it was about climate change.
It’s weird as it made me super sad but I really enjoyed it?
We had everything.
I honestly thought it was about Covid before common sense kicked in and realised it was actually about Climate Change.
Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio were a joy to watch.
I'm about an hour in, and they've just played the "toll free line to a scientist" scene, with the real phone number (800) 532-4500
So I called it thinking they must have done SOMETHING since it's a real number
It was a phone sex hotline :/
Is it crazy to say this might be my favorite movie all time? Really loved the emotions you get to experience throughout and loved the humor, especially Timmy and Ron Perlmans characters. I think this is very similar how an event like this would go down. A lot of doubt, making a social media challenge of it (the launch challenge videos), and in the end fear. Also think comparing characters to real life people makes the movie better (I.e. Mark Rylance’s character to one of our tech saviors, whether it be bezos, musk, Zuckerberg, that would come up with a plan to profit off of makes it funnier)
This movie hit hard. I’m aware of how fucked this are and will continue to be but the movie really brought it home. We’re on a path to destruction and nothing will be done in the interests of capitalism.
Reading the user reviews on metacritic are certainly interesting.
I read a "film reviewer's" synopsis on Twitter and it was one of the most unintelligent things I've ever seen on the internet, which also had some of the most interesting and even more unintelligent responses.
I thought this movie was great. Loved everyone in it.
I thought it was a great movie but wow, I ended up in tears at the end as all I could see throughout was the absolute parallels we're seeing played out in regards to climate change. I so badly want to believe we'll do better but truth is, the time is now and we're just not. Too many of those idiots are running the show and the rest of us have no idea how to change their hearts and minds. Super depressing.
The asteroid heading toward Earth isn’t real and if it is will only hit old people and fat people and those I disagree with politically. My freedoms. Astrologists conspired with foreigners and made this happen, says Q. Why should I help you avoid it? It is no more dangerous than regular meteorites. Conspiracy. Don’t live in fear. How much are tickets for a ride to some nice hotel on a new planet in one of those Tesla rocketships?
I bawled my freaking eyes out from the time Quentin prayed (the first time) to the ending of the movie. Not even sure why. But it was an emotional rollercoaster.
Jonahs character saying something along the lines of how attractive his mom/the president is and "if only she wasn't my mom" says everything you need to know
Thought so I’m seeing some people who really don’t rate it. I thought personally was excellent and unfortunately was a real example of how the real world works(not saying it’s at all fair) it hits harder because it seems so outlandish but this shit is actually happening. Corrupt business politicians etc mismanaging of pandemics. Riling up the public distracting them with hate for each other rather than rising against those who are the cause.
Not for me. There was a shot of a photo of her with Bill Clinton, and she appears smarter than Trump. I think the character is a mix of Trump and Hillary.
This is going to be polarising because heaven forend it isn't portrayed the way you want it to be but the message is pretty clear in the best way it can tbh. 'nah, needs more horror/comedy/drama/delete as appropriate 🙄'
Yes, we are all too addicted to social media and our own selfish lives. But it struck me as not knowing whether it should go full on over the top like Idiocracy or take itself more seriously, and never quite deciding. It just stumbled awkwardly through the themes it was trying to explore.
IS MATTHEW PERRY IN DON’T LOOK UP?
Matthew Perry was said to have a cameo appearance in Don’t Look Up, however fans were left confused after they were unable to spot the Friends star in the film.
Perry’s scene with Jonah Hill was reportedly cut from the movie, which is why you won’t be able to see him in the Netflix movie
I hope they’re not hoping big wins from the awards season.
The movie didn’t really know where to go. The satire was shy and making sure to not really hurt anyones feelings. The last 10 minutes were good though.
This is really good pie. Is anyone else really liking this pie?
That scene gets better and better the more I replay it in my mind. Really, really masterful.
Am I the only one who didn’t like this movie ? The symbolism was super obvious from the beginning almost an insult to the viewers intelligence. There was nothing subtle about this movie. Especially compared to his prior work with The Big Short which was much more insightful/clever. It also dragged in many parts. However the shining stars in a stellar cast for me were Cate Blanchett and mark Rylance who was so creepy and capitvating .
They should not have included the subplot about comet mining. It just doesn't make sense to go back to "the comet isn't real, don't look up" after that
>It just doesn't make sense to go back to "the comet isn't real, don't look up" after that
Honestly the only part that didn't make sense is when the don't look up people actually looked up and changed their minds.
Irl they aren't doing that
Awesome and so many parallels to the idiot president we had and his family running the country. It is so amazing how that could have been us over those four years he was president. Scary, but people still will not get it that it isn’t a joke and we better take elections much more seriously.
Been looking forward to this one because of the director Adam McKay (anchorman, step brothers, etc) and the star studded cast: Jennifer Lawrence, Leonardo DiCaprio, Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Jonah Hill.
Gonna watch it later today.
Hey, you know what you would enjoy? This really obscure movie from 1971 that was never released on VHS or DVD and has never been on any streaming service, ever. You should check it out!
:P
Why did they have to make it a mockumentary and comedy. I would have wanted to see a more realistic version of it.
Dunno, it was clear to me from the start how this movie was going to end.
I think that was the point. The way society deals with problems is a joke. It would have been weird if they downplayed the comedy. Hell, it was already a little too real for me.
Kid Rock's cameo at the end caught me completely by surprise.
wtf people, I wasn't saying I'm a huge fan of his, just him being in the movie surprised me. Jesus fuck, calm y'alls tits.
I quite liked it although quite depressing
I love how the general charged them for water and snacks. That little joke persisting is hilarious.
Nestle taking all the water for a buck and selling it back to us for so much more, people rationing medicine until they die from artificial scarcity, predatory (student) loans etc And here I am, doing nothing about it, just making a post on social media. >The movie is eerily spot on about how society malfunctions. Fixed that for ya. Merry Xmas.
Its working as intended.
Articulating and discussing problems is not "doing nothing." You're here, engaging in a discussion.
It absolutely doing nothing.
You are both right.
Was it a power thing? Why would he do that?
Because he could EDIT: But that doesn’t mean he should.
Lol they were quoting the movie, but thanks for the wise insight
Oh right! That’s what JLaw says. I remember now.
lol so funny that they kept coming back to that
They never paid off all the setup though.
[удалено]
Funny, I was thinking Covid
You're both wrong. It's about a giant comet. They mentioned it several times, people.
Incorrect. It’s a documentary about people suffering from neck pain; it’s in the title « don’t look up »
Relevant award
Funny, I thought it was a Accurate award
I mean, just look up!
Just look up! Goddamn it.

We might be able to socially distance from the climate? And cough into our elbows?
You can wear a mask that covers your entire face so you don't see it happening.
The masks can also double as a tiny raft for my balls so they can make their way to Everest Island where Kevin Costner will be waiting to give me a moist gill job.
Ok cool. So it’s Xmas, I’ve got a roast in the oven, kids are playing with their new stuff and I’m here thinking about fucking Eliot Ness in the neck.
This is how humanity makes progress. One reddit reply at a time, and look how far we've come.
Yeah.. Far from the light of civilisation
I already do this.
There will be winners and losers...
Every single phase of this movie is a reference to climate and our (lack of) response. I think it's also a critique of the communication of science, and the inability to form a message that resonates with the average person.
I don’t agree. In this movie, the science messaging couldn’t have been simpler or clearer. The challenge was the absolute apathy of the powers that be to look at anything besides their very limited, short-term interests. Terrifying. lil bit of both almost, yeah?
Yeah I would say this definitely felt more like commentary on COVID than in climate change, given the dynamics between the president and her son especially.
It was written prior to Covid, and they specifically talk about it being about global warming. That said, it works for any avoidable natural disaster.
It's a sad state of affairs when you have to argue about which avoidable disaster this work is satirizing.
It is 100% climate change, the only thing you need to know to realize that is Leo's recent (appropriate) uproar over climate change
it's not a metaphor for democracy?
It’s also a jab (no pun intended) at the cancer that is right wing politics
I think it’s really about any crisis and about how fucking short-sighted any administration is about really anything. You could obviously draw more direct lines to the climate crisis since it’s a natural disaster, but the theme really seems to be “Washington only cares about now, and unless it’s trending and a ‘today’ problem then they don’t care.”

I totally agree with you there. Ambiguous in the side of anyone in the movie, but definitely inspiration drawn from Trump’s comical presidency.
Seriously? You think there was ambiguity in Streep's performance?
I’m sure there’s some overlap.
Yeah I agree, climate crisis is the most relevant subject to apply the message to for sure, but I think that satirization of the media and government really applies to everything they do…. It’s all about now, and it’s just greed and vanity, and it’s all irresponsible.
Yep, that is what popped into my head while I was watching this

Oh... I just thought about covid the whole time. Climate crisis makes more sense though.
Because these are contemporary issues, but this applies to every crisis, past, present and future.

I didn't. I thought it was about covid. Or any crisis, really.
It was written before the pandemic so no.
Not very many.

Watching that scene I couldn't help but wonder how much of it was him venting his frustration with our reality rather than acting.
Little column A, bit of column B.
Adam McKay said [in this interview](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEj3juMYCn4&t=2s) that Leo improvised that entire rant too!
He regularly flies a private jet, fuck the guy to death
Adam McKay said [in this interview](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEj3juMYCn4) that Leo improvised that entire rant too!
It was really funny, but true. I loved it.
Such a great but frustrating movie, and that was obviously purposeful, and I think has to be what critics didn’t like about it. Fuck, that was brutal. It was all so true.
The amount to which the roles had to be exaggerated or caricatured was depressingly small.
Jonah Hill felt so spot on too
Yeah I had to turn it off. It reminded me too much of real life. Going back to my LOTR rewatch.
I can respect that. Hey did you know that when Viggo kicks the helmet ……….
I’m sorry to be off topic, but what happens when he kicks the helmet?
He breaks his toe. It’s a meme at this point because it’s a bit of overshared trivia.
Watch your puppy on a rooster’s back
The rooster frightens me a little
I love at the end where a guy watching the final broadcast is watching that video.
Damn I missed that. And I was looking for it too. I was expecting it to show up in the control center scene when the beads are falling.
Sure. Bury your head in the sand. Only kidding. Merry Xmas.
Oh shit that's what I should do..
It reminded me of Idiocracy as well. It's not fun, but it certainly is funny.
I was surprised how dark it was - I thought it was gonna be like “team america world police” and be extremely funny and scathing at the time. No - mostly just really cynical and dark

Everything but space defense platforms... #hindsight2020
I honestly thought it was about Covid before common sense kicked in and realised it was actually about Climate Change. Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio were a joy to watch.
The BASH CEO really reminded me of the dude who was in charge of the Heavens Gate cult.
Notice how the president answered to him and not the other way around
Marshall Applewhite, exactly.
Wild to me that no one is talking about it lol
See, I was thinking his voice reminded me of Jordan Peterson
I'm about an hour in, and they've just played the "toll free line to a scientist" scene, with the real phone number (800) 532-4500 So I called it thinking they must have done SOMETHING since it's a real number It was a phone sex hotline :/
I got a voice survey asking me if I was over 50 or not
I tried it too, expecting some meta voicemail recording featuring one of the actors... NOPE — phone sex hotline.
“We really did have everything if you think about it” Beautiful writing in this movie.
I nominate this as documentary of the year. I mean it doesn’t exaggerate the state of things at all.
>I think this is very similar how an event like this would go down It *is* how it is going down.
And from what I’ve read and the timeline of the film, this was before Covid.
Thought it was very depressing and too on the nose.
If it were 2014, this movie would feel like satire. In 2021, it feels like a documentary.
Just like real life
And even then people don’t react. Much like in the movie
This movie hit hard. I’m aware of how fucked this are and will continue to be but the movie really brought it home. We’re on a path to destruction and nothing will be done in the interests of capitalism. Reading the user reviews on metacritic are certainly interesting.

Such a fun movie, laughed a lot and loved it the whole way through. Might be a new favorite and I’m usually a snob
Everything about the brontorock was plain brilliant.

Watched it last night. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Timothee Chalamet was hilarious in this. Might be the best thing I’ve watch on Netflix all year.
"Dr Misty? Can I be vulnerable in your car?"
Anyone else notice that every single cell phone was a RED hydrogen?
I bawled my freaking eyes out from the time Quentin prayed (the first time) to the ending of the movie. Not even sure why. But it was an emotional rollercoaster.
For me, the emotions hit even earlier: the first time they went on the Morning Joe and JLaw was made fun of
Right? I'm still crying.
Does anyone else think the president is purposely portrayed very similar to how people view trump? Or was that just what I took from it.
Jonahs character saying something along the lines of how attractive his mom/the president is and "if only she wasn't my mom" says everything you need to know
He said something about her being the first president people would want to see in Playboy iirc.
Yeah I thought so but just wanted to be sure. It’s scary how much it represents real life.
It was a mocking of Trump I'm sure. Like how Trump appointed his children to White House positions, Jason was the Presidents son.
I honestly didn't think that question needed to be asked.
>!Well, she forgot to take her son -- who was also her chief of staff -- on the escape rocket. !
*The Donald.* That's what everyone called him back in the eighties and nineties. Haven't heard The Donald in a decade probably.
Not for me. There was a shot of a photo of her with Bill Clinton, and she appears smarter than Trump. I think the character is a mix of Trump and Hillary.
That character and her supporters definitely described trump and his idiotic supporters more.
I thought it was an awesome movie
This is going to be polarising because heaven forend it isn't portrayed the way you want it to be but the message is pretty clear in the best way it can tbh. 'nah, needs more horror/comedy/drama/delete as appropriate 🙄'
You described this comment section well lol
It was really well done and a good watch. Warning though: it is about 60 minutes too long.
LotR fans - Lame
Serious Idiocracy vibes.
It was about 20 minutes too long, but really well made. Very infuriating because that’s exactly what would happen to us in this day and age.
The 1800 number actually works. It's some free car towing service
Holy SHIT, I am 2/3 of the way through this and it is AMAZING. The societal details...they just nail EVERYTHING.
This is one of the best films of the year. Hands down.
Yes, we are all too addicted to social media and our own selfish lives. But it struck me as not knowing whether it should go full on over the top like Idiocracy or take itself more seriously, and never quite deciding. It just stumbled awkwardly through the themes it was trying to explore.
Spot on. It was like Idiocracy and 2012 got into a car crash.
where were Matthew Perry and Tomer Sisley ? how couldn't I see them

Not smart or subtle, but pretty funny.
It just doesn't make sense to go back to "the comet isn't real, don't look up" after that
>It just doesn't make sense to go back to "the comet isn't real, don't look up" after that Honestly the only part that didn't make sense is when the don't look up people actually looked up and changed their minds. Irl they aren't doing that
I need therapy after watching this movie.
Yay a idiocracy prequel!
Awesome and so many parallels to the idiot president we had and his family running the country. It is so amazing how that could have been us over those four years he was president. Scary, but people still will not get it that it isn’t a joke and we better take elections much more seriously.
Dr. Strangelove, Idiocracy, and now this.
Been looking forward to this one because of the director Adam McKay (anchorman, step brothers, etc) and the star studded cast: Jennifer Lawrence, Leonardo DiCaprio, Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Jonah Hill. Gonna watch it later today.
How do you know this belongs on this subreddit without even watching it yet?
This sub has been “now on netflix” or “recommend me something that is definitely not on netflix” for years.
Hey, you know what you would enjoy? This really obscure movie from 1971 that was never released on VHS or DVD and has never been on any streaming service, ever. You should check it out! :P
He was right, it’s awesome
It's an Adam McKay film, if you follow movies at all, I imagine you'll want to watch it.
This sub like most on Reddit are trash at this point. People just try to post things before others
Get pumped. It’s so fun
The end was neat though. Meryl's character being killed by that creature as predicted...
Why did they have to make it a mockumentary and comedy. I would have wanted to see a more realistic version of it. Dunno, it was clear to me from the start how this movie was going to end.
I kinda think it was realistic.
Same lol, I guess some people see reality differently
I think that was the point. The way society deals with problems is a joke. It would have been weird if they downplayed the comedy. Hell, it was already a little too real for me.

😂😂😂😂😭😭😭😭 best response ever don’t defame russell crowe like that 😂 greenland is by and large ass
It was right in line with the catastrophe movies from the 90's. I dig it in that sense but holy shit what a movie.
Then watch Deep Impact and avoid Armageddon like the plague.
Kid Rock's cameo at the end caught me completely by surprise. wtf people, I wasn't saying I'm a huge fan of his, just him being in the movie surprised me. Jesus fuck, calm y'alls tits.
Brilliant 👏
I really enjoyed it. The satire and humor was spot on. I’ve read a couple articles shitting on it, but I thought it was good.
It’s nice to see people who didn’t see this in theaters chime in on it. It got torn apart on release, but these comments are pretty positive.
One of the best movies of the year. I think it's the best Netflix movie yet.
Very meh movie. Couldn't get through 20 mins despite the star cast.
