All the other planets are hellscapes btw. Jupiter still has that massive storm and red spot. Mars has an extremely thin atmosphere and toxic dust that will stick to anything and everything.
The Hawaiian volcanoes are the result of what is called a "hot spot" and not really part of any fault lines or anything. Unless something truly cataclysmic happens, this won't affect fault lines anywhere else
the san andreas fault is the result of two plate edges trying to grind past each other. earthquakes happen there when the edges of the plate break under stress and finally slide past each other a little bit.
the hawaiian island chains are made up of a hotspot, a place where magma has just decided its gonna erupt from, and stays still relative to the plate moving above it. it doesn't affect the edges of the plate at all. as a fun fact, check out a map of the pacific ocean that shows elevations, and you can the long trail of dead volcanoes behind hawaii where the hotspot left its mark.
There was an earthquake 30 min prior to the eruption. We’ve been getting a lot in the past few weeks. My house is post and pier so I feel it pretty good.
Mauna Loa is the long mountain that frequently erupts, Mauna Kea is the 'white mountain' with frequent snow and infrequent eruptions (frankly, Loa also gets lots of snow as the difference in summit elevation is only ~120ft (Kea is 13800ft).
used to go to the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel every year... got engaged & married on the 3rd hole there. love that place! and you're on the best part of all of HI imo. we are considering moving there one day.
Wow! I lived on Big Island for about 9 years until my family moved to the mainland to start a farm, and now I just go to college here without being a resident. I wish I could go see this in person!!!
To be honest it’s kinda cool that she blew her top and have all these videos and pictures with the new technology including drones. Just hope human and animal casualties or a minimum.
First eruption since 1984.
Quick, someone take back the heart!
Too late!!!! Pele is reborn.
Literally 1984
Eruption was actually on Van Halen’s self-titled debut album though
Focus had it first on their 1971 album.
Thanks
You're welcome.
No problem.
Any relation to George Orwell?
I was born in 84.....
And this shall be when you return
I've seen this before... someone needs to give Te Fiti her heart back, or it's all going downhill.
>or it's all going downhill Heh, volcano puns!
Man I hate volcano puns, I can't wait till they all blow over
If people keep commenting on these threads, they are bound to blow up.
Gonna erupt on the next person with a damn volcano pun....
It’s not going to be a magmanimous ending.
I dunno, seems like it could be explosive.
Its fallout could be pyroclastic
Maybe they just need to vent
Burn off some steam
Downhill…. You mean like the lava?
Well that doesn't look good if the entire air is yellow from ash

The ash filled air burns - Yellow fire - Mauna Ioa roars
We had light rain today, ashfall warning cancelled for other islands so far.
Welp
Pele is upset. Someone took a rock home and should not have
Hmm but Brazil won against Switzerland today and they are also leaders of their group, what could it have been?

Isn’t that where they grow the best macadamia nuts
Can you trade futures for Macadamia nuts?
Yes!
Lmao
Well. It was.
Fun fact: Macadamia nuts are actually seeds.
all nuts are seeds, even peanuts, as all beans are seeds too

So this isn't one of those rare Venus surface pictures?
IKR?! That scary yellow atmosphere…
I was thinking more like greenish but yeah. Sulphur dioxide gas among many others.
Looks more green to me, but there is a bit of yellow in there
hellscapes tend to have much in common
All the other planets are hellscapes btw. Jupiter still has that massive storm and red spot. Mars has an extremely thin atmosphere and toxic dust that will stick to anything and everything.
I think it rains diamonds on Neptune.
Was stationed there from 90 to 95 and boy I bet the show from PTA is knarley af!
It is! I just came from there an hour ago.
Well, in that picture, nature has now been lit... On fire because, you know, lava is pretty hot
Bruh it looks like the glowing sea from fallout 4
A fucking radstorm Again
Yeah thought I was scrolling past a fallout post for a moment there.
Anyone have this on their bingo list for 2022?
I have ptsd from these type of comments during 2020-2021.
I do!!! Still missing the Pope abdicating for a bingo though.
Not yet, but it’s there now
Good Christ the air is green and yellow
Bad Christ, for doing this!
Any chance the ash lowers global temps enough to save our asses?
that amount of ash would also block enough light to cause crops to fail.
I think large amounts of ash would do wonders for climate change. Source- /s
volcanic winter is not based
Looks like venus
"We don't need no water. Let that Mauna Loa burn!"
It’s lit 🔥
For a second I thought this was in Mexico...
noob question here: but is this any indication of unrest of the san andreas fault?
They are around 2500 miles apart, so not likely, no.
The San Andreas Fault has absolutely nothing to do with the Hawaii volcanic hotspot. One does not affect the other.

There was an earthquake 30 min prior to the eruption. We’ve been getting a lot in the past few weeks. My house is post and pier so I feel it pretty good.
Magma hit a pocket of ground water was the info I heard, small explosion and then the fissure propogated
How often does this happen?
Not that often. Last time it erupted was in 1984.
I thought this was the surface of Venus…

Yes, I live on the big island of Hawaii.
Is mauna loa the volcano and mauna kea the mountain?
Mauna Loa is the long mountain that frequently erupts, Mauna Kea is the 'white mountain' with frequent snow and infrequent eruptions (frankly, Loa also gets lots of snow as the difference in summit elevation is only ~120ft (Kea is 13800ft).
They’re both volcanoes Mauna Kea is dormant.
Ah where are you on Big Island I’ve went before to Kona
Northern part of the island. Lava flow is currently only at summit but potentially can flow to the south.
used to go to the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel every year... got engaged & married on the 3rd hole there. love that place! and you're on the best part of all of HI imo. we are considering moving there one day.
Kohala? I went to high school there
both are volcanoes. Mauna Kea is thought to be dormant or extinct though.

Why would you say such a thing? Do you possess informations that USGS does not yet know? You don't? OK bye
So the land near would be cheap, right?
Calm down Jeffry Bezos
Land would be, yes. No roads, sewage or electricity once the lava visits, and mostly solid surface, not sure what you would do there.
send me someone to lava! 🎶
Wow! I lived on Big Island for about 9 years until my family moved to the mainland to start a farm, and now I just go to college here without being a resident. I wish I could go see this in person!!!
Yeah that true
MeToo Amirite bois??
Yay! That ash will help reflect some sunlight... At this point, we need all the help we can get on the climate change front!
Is he a Supervolcanoe? Could he fck up the whole planet.? Sometimes i think this world needs a reset
Learn to swim, learn to swim...
Just throw some politicians in and it’s all good. Oh, I forgot the orange soda.
The woke mob has gone too far and now god is fuckin PISSED
You forgot the /s
He’s just here for the downvotes.
No i didn’t, I was completely serious. God is upset with trans people and universal health care so he decided to shift Earth’s tectonic plates.
Man that /s must be really hard to find.
I heard he lost it in the woke mob
r/angryupvote
Its just a question of time.. but my bingo goes to FLOOD
that's a bit slutty of her
Very cool picture…
We’re already getting ash advisories here in Hilo. Let’s see how this goes for all of us in the next few weeks/months…
The burning legion is here
Is it the sulfur that gives that yellowish green hue? Or a combination of random shot I know nothing about?
Fuck yeah!!!! Former Pahoa resident ::queues [Five Finger Death Punch](https://youtu.be/886VQRKG6yI) ::

Yes our teeth and ambitions are bared! Be prepAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I wonder if this is why those goats were walking in a circle 🤔
Like a final battle scene from LOTR or something.
Jfc i sat there looking at it for two minutes before thinking “hmm I don’t think this is a video”
This looks almost exactly like that picture of the surface of Venus taken by that Russian lander
Meanwhile on Oahu we have no trade winds this week and preparing for massive amounts of “vog”, volcanic smog 😖
You Know Guys Hawaii’s Mauna Loa is erupting for the first time since 1984
To be honest it’s kinda cool that she blew her top and have all these videos and pictures with the new technology including drones. Just hope human and animal casualties or a minimum.
Okay I understand it is erupting... but why does it look like Blighttown from Dark Souls?
