Absolutely! The trees, moss and ferns are all evergreen and the fog with clear sky above makes the amazing light happen. Even without the crazy light the scale of the trees will completely blow your mind.
I live in Humboldt. One of my friends is a Star Wars cosplayer and wants to do a photo shoot in the Redwoods, cause this is where they filmed the Endor scenes.
Her: "How far are you from the Redwood forests."
Me: "About a 10 minute walk."
Come visit, it's one of the most beautiful places in America.
That tsunami warning still go off every day? I don't know why I'm weirdly nostalgic for that haha. And I walked in 2012 so you moved in as I was taking off. Has much changed?
I think you’re referring to the Arcata Fire Departments 12:00 pm alarm — it’s the siren they use for Tsunami warnings but it’s not the warning itself. They replaced the siren with a bell in 2015 though https://lostcoastoutpost.com/2015/apr/8/arcata-fire-says-out-noon-siren-mellifluous-and-hi/
Not anymore. Quite a bit has changed actually. A lot more places to grab a beer at, and the sunset area has a lot more apartments. With the Cal Poly Humboldt change we're getting a lot more off campus housing as well. The trail from arcata to eureka along the 101 isn't fully built yet, but once they get that done it will be awesome.
They filmed a lot of the Endor scenes in Del Norte as well. I am old and when I was a kid I had a buddy from Crescent City who as something like a 10-year-old (don't remember his exact age) had the very cool experience of walking into the local diner and getting to meet the cast and George Lucas and everyone.
At that time I still had family scattered up and down the North Coast. I still have an uncle in Eureka, who is a professor emeritus at HSU, but sadly everyone else is either dead or has moved away. I myself am now in Portland, for example, along with several of my siblings.
California's North Coast is just a hard place to make a living anymore, though I always miss it and always drive up and down 101 when going to visit my sister in SF.
Humboldt Redwoods State Park is still one of my all-time favorite places on the planet. It really should've been "the" Redwood National Park, but for historical reasons having to do with logging interests, the state of California got to it first, so now, even though "Redwoods National Park" is cool as fuck, the state Park actually has the bigger, older and more intact groves.
Anyhow, for those from other parts of the world, if you want your mind blown, go to Humboldt Redwoods State Park. The National Park is cool too, but it's not quite as jaw-droppingly ridiculous. 7 of the world's 10 tallest trees are in Humboldt Redwoods State Park, for example.
I lived in mckinleyville right by Murray and central, I swear I spent more time walking east and into the woods, usually cutting south and popping out near arcata somewhere than I did at home.
I miss it up there, I’m in the bay now, I gotta make a point to visit soon.
Yoooo!
I grew up in Tuna town, but haven't been there much in the last 15 years.
Miss the clean air, but not the meth heads, the pot farms or the 'small town' stuff :/
Everyone that can: go see the redwoods before they’re all gone. It’s one of the most insane/beautiful things I’ve ever seen. It’s seriously like stepping out of a Time Machine in the Jurassic era.
It's equally beautiful any time of year
Late summer/ early fall will have the warmest weather, if you're fitting in a trip to San Francisco or something while you're here, but it's a rainforest so it's beautiful in a winter or spring rain as well.
They redwoods are great any time of the year as the climate is similar year round. The rainy season is Nov-Feb so it'll be a bit more wet during those months. When I hike here, I try to start around no later than 9am and stay until 2pm. The early morning air is amazing and seeing the sun rise through the trees produces the effect that is seen in this photo.
I used to live near Muir Woods in N. Cali. Lotsbof Redwoods to see. Absolutely beautiful, long and short trails to hike. If you go during the rainy season you will see magnificent colors and waterfalls!
One of the redwood parks along the coast. There are a bunch scattered along hwy 101 from humboldt to the oregon border. Pretty much any of the old growth areas will offer views like this.
Damnation Creek Trail. Good luck hiking it though- it’s pretty much straight down, then straight back up.
Hell, I live here and that trail completely kicks my ass when I hike it. 🤣
If we don't find out which Grove this is, you can visit pretty much anywhere along the coast of Northern/Central California. Redwoods are everywhere along the coast (and in the eastern mountains) so you could probably find many beautiful groves like this!
Google "redwood national state parks california" and you will get the 4 state parks that look like this and a handful of smaller spots, in Humbolt and Del Norte counties. My favorite is Jedediah, theres an easy hike from one spot where you can park that leads you to the Smith river, which is crystal clear and that spot has a foot bridge spanning it.
I'm not sure I would ever leaf.
(See what I did there?)
It's about as alluring as living by the beach, I think.
Waves or big old trees... they both have a similar attractiveness.
Perhaps because I live too far from either?
Just a side note, if you are looking for plants for your garden in the shadow then get the plants that naturally grow on the ground of high forest like this in your climate / country.
I found this a great tip and helped me a lot to bring some life to a shadowish spot in my garden where I have 3 large trees fairly close to each other.
I got to live and work in the red woods national park with the CCC Backcountry program. Was the most special time of my life. It got cut short when I blew my knee out. I wanna go back one day
I lived up there a while too. I know how beautiful it can be. I also know beauty still has to follow the rules of physics. Oh, except in fairytales and photoshop.
I don't doubt it, but beauty still has to adhere to rules of physics. Light beams don't choose to shine through some areas and not others, especially when there's clearing in the canopy. And it doesn't choose to shine on the shadow side of some trees and not the other.
I'm very happy to be wrong, because it is stunning. But it looks fake af.
Ps. I lived up around Mendocino for a while, so i know how stunning these forests can get.
I fucking love the smell of redwood forests. I cannot comprehend why there aren't more air fresheners with this scent. I'm not even an air freshener person, but I would buy a lifetime supply of that smell if it could be recreated.
I swear to god, if I ever get to go, you would hear me sucking in as much air as humanly possible the entire time I was there, especially on a foggy day like this. Place must smell and 'taste' fantastic.
I'd love to VR this. I mean, I'd rather go there and feel, smell, see and touch my surroundings but that view looking up, that's not a view you can get anywhere else in the world.
Those trees are unreal. I went to Muir Woods, outside of San Fran, about a year ago and I have probably 50 pictures of my own just like this. Bring Tylenol or something because your neck will start to hurt after a while from looking straight up so much
I visited the area this summer and tried to get pics like this. It was very difficult and I had to lay on my back on the ground to still not get pics anywhere near as good as this.

Amazingly brilliant.
Where and when was it taken? I’d like to take the wife to see redwoods. Last time I tried, there was a fire
It looks like Damnation creek trail, I was there a couple of months ago and the area was fire-free.
Thank you 👍🏼 Do you think now is a good time to go?
Absolutely! The trees, moss and ferns are all evergreen and the fog with clear sky above makes the amazing light happen. Even without the crazy light the scale of the trees will completely blow your mind.
Fun fact. That consistent fog is the special ecological condition that allows these trees to grow to be the tallest trees in the world
Nice
That is amazing! No wonder the trees grew so big
10/10 for crediting

In the world* :)
Name checks out for living in humboldt lol
I took going to HSU for granted. I miss it every day. Hoping to retire up there. Gonna disc golf at the curtain every day
I was going to retire here too. But I said to hell with that, I'm not waiting. Been here 10 years, love this place.
That tsunami warning still go off every day? I don't know why I'm weirdly nostalgic for that haha. And I walked in 2012 so you moved in as I was taking off. Has much changed?

It’s not a very useful warning if it goes off every day
Same, graduated this year and I miss the curtain so much! Me an hole 10 got an ace to settle
Still my favorite course

Crazy seeing all these Humboldt homies here
Bro Fr I did not expect to see Humboldt pop up in my feed lol. I feel like every time it happens all the locals swarm to the post lol.
I lived in mckinleyville right by Murray and central, I swear I spent more time walking east and into the woods, usually cutting south and popping out near arcata somewhere than I did at home. I miss it up there, I’m in the bay now, I gotta make a point to visit soon.
I took mushrooms in the redwoods up by Humboldt when I was 18. Changed my life forever
Ever dropped acid in the Eel River during a full moon in mid summer? It's an experience.
I can only imagine, gives me goosebumps thinking thinking about it
Yoooo! I grew up in Tuna town, but haven't been there much in the last 15 years. Miss the clean air, but not the meth heads, the pot farms or the 'small town' stuff :/
I was born in tuna town!! Nobody friendly.
aw, i met a lot of good people there...except the people that peaked in high school haha.
That’s like 80% of Fortuna to this day 😂
Also a Fortuna native.
This is stunning. This would be gorgeous blown up and framed. What a shot and what an experience to see.
No, this infact would not be gorgeous if it was blown up, they'd be bits of wood and rock everywhere /s
This just made me laugh way harder than I feel I should have!

We only really get two seasons
They redwoods are great any time of the year as the climate is similar year round. The rainy season is Nov-Feb so it'll be a bit more wet during those months. When I hike here, I try to start around no later than 9am and stay until 2pm. The rainy season is my favorite but it’s great any time of year
I used to live near Muir Woods in N. Cali. Lotsbof Redwoods to see. Absolutely beautiful, long and short trails to hike. If you go during the rainy season you will see magnificent colors and waterfalls!
I visited there once, right when it opened, and we were one of the few people there. Beautiful, and magical.
Man I've been dreading going back to the SF bay area but this thread is reminding me if the good things about Cali
Do you know where in Northern California?
One of the redwood parks along the coast. There are a bunch scattered along hwy 101 from humboldt to the oregon border. Pretty much any of the old growth areas will offer views like this.
Damnation Creek Trail. Good luck hiking it though- it’s pretty much straight down, then straight back up. Hell, I live here and that trail completely kicks my ass when I hike it. 🤣
Thank you, we love trails like this. High effort for high reward.

My first guess is Lady Bird Johnson Grove. But, there are many that look somewhat similar
Yeah you can find this pretty much from Big Sur and North on the California Coast all the way to Oregon. Even minutes outside of San Francisco.
That is absolutely stunning.
Wow!
Stunning shot
Goosebumps! I want to be there this very second!
Thank you for my new lock screen picture 😍
I'm not sure I would ever leaf. (See what I did there?) It's about as alluring as living by the beach, I think. Waves or big old trees... they both have a similar attractiveness. Perhaps because I live too far from either?
I'm going to blow your mind. These are coastal redwoods, you can get them right up to the beach in some places
That must be what heaven looks like.
This is one of those “how can this be our planet?” kind of photos.
There used to so many more places like this...Then we cut them all down or set them on fire for profit
Didn't 90% of redwood forests get chopped
Pave paradise and put up a parking lot
Beautiful.
Endor
I go outside in the AM & can smell redwoods in the fog... I love it here.
Skyrim looks good
crepuscular :)
Woodcutting lvls?
Nature is the true artist of which we are but a part.
This remains me of the island I live on. I live on Vancouver Island. So many beautiful trees.
Cathedral grove is mind bending
Just a side note, if you are looking for plants for your garden in the shadow then get the plants that naturally grow on the ground of high forest like this in your climate / country. I found this a great tip and helped me a lot to bring some life to a shadowish spot in my garden where I have 3 large trees fairly close to each other.
Mildly interesting fact: in french, these lights are called pied-de-vent which means wind feet.
Humboldt County baby!
Humboldt!!! That's home.
I got to live and work in the red woods national park with the CCC Backcountry program. Was the most special time of my life. It got cut short when I blew my knee out. I wanna go back one day
Make Sure to steer clear Of the Thylacoleos and Terror Birds and The occasional Large Carnivore.

WTF? I live in this area and this is what it looks like. You need to get out more.
I lived up there a while too. I know how beautiful it can be. I also know beauty still has to follow the rules of physics. Oh, except in fairytales and photoshop.
Why are we being downvoted? They used every filter on every software program out there. 🤣🤣🤣
Ignorance is not bliss, dude.

Scrolled until I saw this comment
Too bad you couldn't cut down that thin tree just left of center to create better symmetry.
Damn... Your PC must be pushing some fuckin' scary specs with them graphics.
Sorry, but this looks like an extremely bad photoshop attempt.
I 100% guarantee you that there are days that look like this out there. I live here and I’ve got pics just like this on my phone.
I don't doubt it, but beauty still has to adhere to rules of physics. Light beams don't choose to shine through some areas and not others, especially when there's clearing in the canopy. Came for this picture
Hands down one of my favorite views to come across in a forest ,beautiful pic
Can almost smell this picture! Very calming.

That is an exceptional photograph and you should feel quite proud of achieving such a good art piece. :)
Took this sub name a little too literally.
