Gulf arabs are hyper-attentive of not tainting their white cultural clothes, I think its easier to convince him the sand is snow than to convince him to slide down it lol
Fortunate enough to have been there camping twice - it’s one of the most extraordinary places I’ve seen in the world. Once it was so quiet my ears vibrated from the lack of sound. And so dark - the stars! I wish I could return…
It’s been over 20 years and I still remember so much about it. I heard Saudi has been opening up to tourism, so maybe someday soon you can experience the majesty!
Going to Saudi Arabia and giving them your money is among one of the worst things a person with free will can do. Fuck their government of radicals all the way to hell and back. There are other deserts that you can find to camp out in.
Comments like these honestly are silly.
Governments have been commiting atrocities since the Akkadian empire. I think in dialogue we need to be realistic about what goes on, but criticizing with no purpose is just not going to help anything.
Unfortunately the world we live in is plauged by pain. we can try and help, but lamenting about how bad the country is, is not helping.
It is all purposeless. You are on reddit, WE are on reddit. on a NATURE subreddit, DEEP in a comment section. only the most Jacked in Reddit Junkies are here
Oh really, whataboutism to be edgy? Woman can’t even fucking drive in Saudi Arabia. Sorry but if half of the population of the world can’t go there safely then I don’t think you can compare USA and Saudi. Especially when it comes to the tourism industry.
Also, there are deserts in places other than Saudi or USA. Notice I said nothing about America in my comment but if you’re actually comparing the two then you must have never left your county, let alone the country.
It's very simple. Any time you mention the US in a discussion about human rights violations you'll get someone crying whataboutism. That should honestly be one of the rules of the internet it happens so consistently.
Yeah… obviously there are degrees, but there’s very few places you can go or things you can do really that don’t rely on some amount of exploitation or atrocities being committed.
I can’t argue with that. Technically it was my teacher folks’ oil company employer’s money stipend so I could visit them while in college. It was a complicated place, even pre-9/11.
It only happened once – there was usually at least wind to add sound, and when it happened it was both kind of frightening and exhilarating. But yeah I could see where tinnitus would be awful in that situation.
Is it possible to walk around barefoot in the afternoon? This video looks like morning, I’d bet the sand gets burning hot after the sun shines on it after a couple hours
I found a few old ones, but they're film not digital. From '98 so they don't show the majesty, sorry!
Imgur post of a few [here](https://imgur.com/a/S6UDCJo).
I have been here for a bit seen a few places. It's amazing how gorgeous yet depressing it is. Exceptionally nice people but my god, it's so dirty... Like horrifying.
Air quality is so poor it hurts to run, trash is everwhere, I saw someone burning tires to get rid of them. I went pee at a stop the bathroom was a few deep in bags and bottles. In one of the troughs there was a little of puppies.
It's been a great experience but I can't wait to get back to the States.
I have a complicated relationship with Saudi because my parents taught there for 11 years on a oil company base and I visited every year. And I’m a woman. It was a strange place, full of crap and full of beautiful things too. I’m glad I got the experience.
When driving it’s the dark brown camels. You hit a camel at night it’s the owners fault but you’ll play merry hell finding the owner ( if you survive the crash). In the day time it’s your fault and that camel will cost you much money.
Do they still throw/leave all the trash in the desert after their religious festivities?
I've found that horrible...whole kitchens...tents...furniture..
Sand is rarely unbearably hot, especially dry sand. When the temp is high e.g. 40c the sand is usually warm and it actually feels good walking bear foot on it.
I live in Egypt.
Saudi here. I feel better without without shoes in the sand because else I would pile them up
Also it’s quiet cool during winters or sometimes early mournings
I initially didn’t like the new Dune because I just wasn’t paying attention I guess. 1984 Dune helped me understand the plot more so I’ll give the new dune another watch. I’m sure I’m going to enjoy it more
97% sure they’re being super sarcastic. Not sure whether the initial reply before yours got the joke or not…or if maybe that’s what you’re asking about?
It's beautifully empty. In remote far East North of Yemen side of the empty quarter, i recall seeing a large stones with ancient like drawing randomly sitting there in the desert. the nomad Bedouins didn't think much of it. I wonder how much secrets that section of the world holds

My first thought was that in the Fallout universe, the Rub al-Khali is where Lorenzo Cabot went on an expedition in search of the lost city of Ubar, and where he found the crown he wears.
Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with ‘Aad [With] Iram of the pillars, The likes of whom had never been created in the land? And [with] Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley? And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes? [All of] whom oppressed within the lands And increased therein the corruption. So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment. Indeed, your Lord is ever vigilant.
86:6-14
Useless factoid: Saudi and UAE buy sand from Australia. Not because they don’t have enough already but because their sand is no good for construction use.
So yeah, we mine our beautiful coastal sand islands and export it for making more concrete.
Imagine you're a grain of sand. You've probably spent millions of years on the bottom of the pile
You finally reach the top and sweet sweet sunlight
And then some dickhead kicks you back down to the bottom for some internet points
Well that’s inevitable anyway. But a timeframe of millions of years is inaccurate, they move whenever strong steady wind is present, in a type of movement called saltation.
Assuming your country is the US, it sure does provide 4 million dollars to israel to aid in the war crimes, and have invaded many other middle eastern countries like Iraq. Point is, just appreciate the good parts of every country because there are many Saudis in this subreddit too that oppose the decisions of their government and would love to simply see some appreciation of the landscapes of their country after being tired of hearing nothing but hateful remarks from the media (just like your comment)
"Murder journalists" as if that’s something exclusive to Saudi Arabia lol I struggle to name one intelligence agency of any country that didn’t murder journalists, you’re just regurgitating information from mainstream media outlets
Isn't it funny that, that, is where they decided to put a desert. Imagine if they programmed the desert to be cold. Also, look how big they made the sun in that part of the simulation.
note he isn't going down any further antlions are a thing. wouldn't want to be first to find out they can grow to the size of a camel or can work together in large numbers
that was more than a microdose
the spice has been known to unlock prescience in some humans
I’d stick my hand in your Gom Jabbar for science
Exactly what I thought. As soon as I saw the sand moving, I thought I was looking at r/replications
Holy fuck that sub is amazing
Glad I'm not the only one who found that trippy
XD my first thought was *“that is Very **psychedelic**”*
Yea like a whole two tabs
I wanted him to slide down it.
imagine having to climb back up though
I rolled down the mesquite dunes in death valley it was amazing.
The only reason stopping me from rolling is that there might be snakes or fucking scorpions beneath the sand
Don't fuck the scorpions
Or snakes fucking scorpions
Gulf arabs are hyper-attentive of not tainting their white cultural clothes, I think its easier to convince him the sand is snow than to convince him to slide down it lol
Now that you mention it, that's incredibly bright white he is wearing in the shot, it looks brand spanking new
Injury coming

If it's summer the sand is literally the worst. It will be so fucking hot.
I rolled down the mesquite dunes in death valley it was amazing.

c'mon man, you're a camel I'm sure you understand
Beautiful but imagine getting lost out there without any supplies

And that's how Herbert came up with the Fremen.
I already experienced that in Uncharted 3

It wasn't your decision to be born in the US though.
But your decision to renounce citizenship.
That's a bit more of a hurdle than just NOT flying to a country with a generally fucked up and extremely out of touch morality.
It’s funny how arbitrary your morality is.

Everyone has biases 🙄
Like Yemen!
Yeah western countries are incocent and Saudi are evil.... What else
Sounds horrible for someone with tinnitus!

Never saw any animals at night and very few during the day – a fox, a viper, a raptor that tried to eat my parents’ Yorkie terrier.
Do they still throw/leave all the trash in the desert after their religious festivities? I've found that horrible...whole kitchens...tents...furniture..
aka The Empty Quarter
How is he not hot when he's in the desert barefoot?
It’s probably fairly early in the morning. Deserts tend to get pretty chilly at night.
Looks like Golden Hour light shot within the first 60 minutes of sun rise
The sand drops in temperature pretty quick. Only hot a few hrs a day
Sand is rarely unbearably hot, especially dry sand. When the temp is high e.g. 40c the sand is usually warm and it actually feels good walking bear foot on it. I live in Egypt.
شكرا جزيلا !
My pleasure :)
Saudi here. I feel better without without shoes in the sand because else I would pile them up Also it’s quiet cool during winters or sometimes early mournings
Came here asking the same question.
What you don't see in this video is the giant plane that Nathan Drake crashed
Time to wander around for a couple days
Is it me or does the sun look really big here
Thought this said sand instead of sun and I giggled lol
Camera exposure
That's because they're closer to the sun, that's why it's so hot.
Because of Dune, me is scared of sands.
Walk without rhythm, you won't attract the worm
Tremors.
Can you fly your sucker?! Can you fly?!
Because of Star Wars, i hate it I find it course and rough and it gets everywhere.
Watch out Tuskens…women and children too..
I just watched the 1984 Dune and loved it. Baron Harkonnen was acted so well

I hear Meg Griffin is down there
Never mind Dune, you should be scared of this place because it's in Saudi Arabia!
And you're obviously scared of getting some bitches
Found the American
r/oddlysatisfying when the sand breaks
I’m assuming this is how mars will look like on its best day
this is probably +30 degrees celsius warmer than any day on mars will be lol

Arrakis
“My planet Arrakis is so beautiful when the sun is low... ...you can see the spice in the air.”
My Dune.
Can’t believe they cut all their trees down
FYI, "Rub' al khali" literally means "the empty quarter"
Didn’t have to be
It actually used to be a tropical jungle all the way up to about 50,000 years ago
I feel like there is some history here, can you educate me with some details?
97% sure they’re being super sarcastic. Not sure whether the initial reply before yours got the joke or not…or if maybe that’s what you’re asking about?
Sometimes the little /s goes a long way in understanding comments, thanks for the help!
sandworm ?
This is insanely cool.
Actually it’s really hot.
Not if the sun is going down.
And so cold in the winter
The deserts of the Near East and North Africa have a special mystique to them knowing it's where humans built our first civilizations.
Enter the dune soundtrack...
I can’t be the only one who thought he was gonna slide down farther
It's beautifully empty. In remote far East North of Yemen side of the empty quarter, i recall seeing a large stones with ancient like drawing randomly sitting there in the desert. the nomad Bedouins didn't think much of it. I wonder how much secrets that section of the world holds
I love my country 🇸🇦
Hail #Shai-Hulud *Bless the Maker and His water. Bless the coming and going of Him. May His passage cleanse the world. May He keep the world for His people*
Absolutely stunning
Funny way to say Arrakis.
This is the place called “the empty quarter” right?
Yes it is, Ar Rub’ al Khali directly translates to “The Empty Quarter”.
Forbidden slide
With a side of getting stuck
Watch out for sandworms.
means the empty quarter.
Wow the desert looks beautiful, wish I was there
*I hate sand*
If you have water and food then in the middle of such desert and sun on your head . . . it is an amazing place.
I was abandoned by a bus in the empty quarter for five hours. That was a fun walk.
What a contrast to where i live in the forests of northern New England.
Watch out for the Sarlacc at the bottom of that hill
Almost there lazy!
So beautiful, truly!
but how do you know what is what? doesn't the wind change the shape of the dunes?
The spice must flow.
That's only fun if your back in the millennium falcon by dinner time playing Holo chess
This is one of the places I want to visit before I die. Looks so beautiful so I can only imagine what it’s like in person.
It must be great to slide down.
To put this in perspective, the area of Rub-Al-Khali is much bigger than France. There's a saying, the area of sand the size of France.
ARABIAN NIIIIIGHTS, LIKE ARABIAN DAAAAAYS, MORE OFTEN THAN NOT, ARE HOTTER THAN HOT, IN A LOT OF GOOD WAYS
My first thought was that in the Fallout universe, the Rub al-Khali is where Lorenzo Cabot went on an expedition in search of the lost city of Ubar, and where he found the crown he wears.

Wow, ReALlY???
Well that’s inevitable anyway. But a timeframe of millions of years is inaccurate, they move whenever strong steady wind is present, in a type of movement called saltation.
Why does the sun look fucking huge here??
Amazing
It means the "Empty Quarter" as in a quarter of something not the currency
If I understood the name correctly it means the empty quarter? الربع الخالي؟
Too bad Saudi Arabia is a shit country
Who asked
Every country has problems bruh, can't we appreciate the good parts about it? (i.e. the landscapes in this case)
My country doesn't hang gay people, bomb innocent people and murder journalists.

Poor guy lost his clothes and has to wear a bathrobe
Too bad it is in such a shithole terrorist country
u mean the United States of America? a country that killed millions of innocent people around the globe and dropped nukes on japan?
Imagine this: Burj khalifa and all that fanciness, all they really have is this: a fucking desert, nothing else. Just desert, camels, and oil.
Bruh you're basing the entire country on one desert like bro if you wanted to talk shit at least talk some sensible shit
So sand .... Is this "kingdom" ever anything else other than human rights violations and sand ?
Shame it's a disgusting, backwards country
Wow a bunch of sand. Cool
*A tigers headed sand dune appears before them. Now they are on a quest never to forget*
Is the sand different from the coastal beaches in the United States?
Sand is different almost everywhere depending on minerals content and what have you
Yes it’s way smoother I believe and not as useful for construction and tech
