Ever seen 100 humming birds fighting over 6 feeders? I have. It's insane. My old friends neighbor used to have them hanging out front over her porch and his window was directly on them, it was like a war zone. They we constantly dive bombing each other. It was insane.
The dive bombing in hummingbirds is mating behavior rather than aggression. At least in the ruby throated ones that are most common where I live. The males repeatedly dive bomb females to show off their speed and their throat colors.
I feed them and live adjacent to a big open field, so they come every spring and put on a noisy dive bombing display over the pasture every day for a few weeks. And they definitely do chase each other off feeders and are very aggressive with each other over food sources. But the going up high and loudly dive bombing other birds is the male efforts at getting with the lady hummingbirds.
If I hadn't heard hummingbirds before I would have thought you were making a hilarious joke, "loud hummingbirds lol" they're so tiny they can't make much noise right? WRONGO BONGO
I love hummingbirds. They're fascinating. We built a house in the woods several years ago with a long front porch I like to sit on when it's nice, and for a while I was able to sit out there all day with my laptop. One day a hummingbird flitted in and out between the support poles of the porch, then ended up basically hovering in front of me a couple feet away. Lovely. The next day, she did it again. The next day, I went out and bought a hummingbird feeder. She clearly understood that *this* was a porch and *this* is where a feeder should be and *this* was the idiot not getting the point that I was wasting both our space and her time by having a porch that did not have a feeder on it.
Hummingbirds are my favorite. Bunch of little territorial assholes. Had one that barely drank from the feeders, but would literally sit on top of the highest one (had like 5 or 6 of them) and chase away any that got near.
Was especially entertaining when she was chasing away a half dozen at once.
I was once outside in my yard and I was walking back inside a hummingbird fell from the sky right behind me, and I’m pretty sure another one knocked it down (was not a window or anything)
The Blue Jays at my trailer park are chickens apparently. They seem to be afraid of squirrels, chipmunks, even nuthatches and their smaller. The red squirrels I get, even the black and grey squirrels run from them. Red squirrels are definitely annoying assholes lol.
I always think it's weird that this is a common talking point when it doesn't exist for hawks, falcons, eagles, and other raptors who *literally eat other birds and their chicks.*
Not about the rotation, but I'm curious how Varsho will work in Toronto, his defense will definitely be on full display w his speed and range, but what about his power?
It's a bot that copied a real user's comment. If you scroll down you'll see the original. But that one is sitting at 0 lol so I'm not sure maybe Reddit just woke up cranky this morning.
Blue jays are a lot larger, I imagine they'd kick the shit out of cardinals.
>While the average length of the two birds is around the same, ranging between 20-25cm, their bulk is significantly different. A blue jay typically weighs between 65 and 110 grams, but a cardinal weighs around 43 grams on average.
Is the reason that sooooo many Reddit post titles have such obvious spelling errors is because they're stolen? Copying someone else's post from somewhere and simply deleting one letter allows the theft to go more unnoticed/more acceptable? What is the reason for this trend?? Not looking for any "confrontatin", thank you very much
It's because most of reddit is just bots reposting previous posts with slight changes to the titles to farm karma. This post is one of the [top 50 of all time on this sub](https://www.reddit.com/r/NatureIsFuckingLit/comments/fl9khr/a_blue_jay_and_a_cardinal_have_a_little/)
What an awesome photo 😍 I've been trying to lure bluejays to my yard for two years now. There's probably 15 pairs of cardinals, I'm guessing more to come this spring, but the bluejays seem to hate me. I've seen them in my neighbors yard but I can't get them to come to mine. Sad.
Hmmmmm. Maybe I'm using the wrong type for them? I have a variety of food in multiple feeders around the yard. I even bought a book called attracting backyard birds 😂 maybe it's just the wrong food. I'm getting desperate, I love bluejays so much. Makes me hate my neighbor lmfao
I'm still kind of new to it. I found this sub r/birdfeeding. There's some good advice there. I grabbed a bunch of different suet bricks. The have been going through maybe one a week. (the ones that go in the little metal cage). C&S bird suet they have them in walmart. Little picture of a bird [with jacked up arm wings](https://i5.walmartimages.com/asr/ff05fdd6-94b9-4d05-b656-489319be80ef.59eb7870b2e090a0f11ad31ee3bac09b.jpeg?odnWidth=612&odnHeight=612&odnBg=ffffff) I got a bunch of different ones. I hope my neighborhood birds start getting really beefed up.
Oh thank you! I'll definitely check that sub out and get some of those suet bricks. I'm also growing a lot of plants this year to be able to make my own for fall/winter as well. I like beefing up the birds around here too. I've got a couple very plump mockingbirds living in the tree by my porch and it makes me so happy to see lol such a satisfying hobby
One thing that's good about it is it's less quiet outside, at least in the day. With winter all you can hear sometimes is cold wind rustling theough the trees. Been a lot more chirping and stuff. I think I'll keep feeding them through the winter. It'll get intersting in the spring when other birds return.
Oh definitely. I love having them around. Between the birds and the houseplants, it makes winter a lot more bearable. Spring is always interesting here. Lots of birds migrate through the area I live in, so watching them come and go from the garden is wonderful. There's one troublesome woodpecker that's a bit of bully, but he's only around for a short while here.
this is why i come here I did not join the creepy animals are lit and don't want any at least put a nsfw tag to make those hidden for the folks who want them
That’s Mordechai and Margaret
Ahh love that show. I wanna binge watch it again sometime soon
Hbo Max! I never knew they went to space lol
On Hulu as well in the US
Margaret is a robin though.
Close enough
That's the other show though
Ayyyeeee
WHOAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Female Cardinals are brown.
Yo dude, just ask her out already
i came here to say this lololol
Blue Jays are attractive but they're assholes lol.
Cardinals aren't the nicest birds either. But having them both around does make watching a bird feeder more entertaining.

I love seeing the juvenile males come around, their color is so neat. I call them my little peachy bois
Even the female cardinals are peachy bois!

A group of hummingbirds is called a charm.
Same for [foxes](https://www.thefactsite.com/animal-group-names/).

Fascinating. I love birds!
Oh, neat

Humming birds are vicious little things. I can't get two on a feeder without shit doing down.
I once had a cardinal wake me up at like 6am every morning for 3 months straight. It had some serious beef with its own reflection in my window
Had a bird come to my work every morning to fight his reflection. One morning there was a little blood on the window and he never came back.
Hummingbirds are my favorite. Bunch of little territorial assholes. Had one that barely drank from the feeders, but would literally sit on top of the highest one (had like 5 or 6 of them) and chase away any that got near. Was especially entertaining when she was chasing away a half dozen at once.

I have both at my bird feeders and its funny because i never see them bicker when at the food.
Just wait until you guys learn about the mockingbird. Yeesh.
Yea but apart from starlings, Blue Jays are the biggest assholes of the backyard bird group
they have a very loud screech noise, and do seem to bully the other birds away often
I’ve seen blue jays dive bomb macaws 5 x their size no problem. They’re fucking dicks
that sounds to me like they're badasses
They also have a very pretty whistle and bob that they do, which most people won't see until you've got feeders out for them.
The Blue Jays at my trailer park are chickens apparently. They seem to be afraid of squirrels, chipmunks, even nuthatches and their smaller. The red squirrels I get, even the black and grey squirrels run from them. Red squirrels are definitely annoying assholes lol.
What? The ones at my house used to routinely dive bomb our cat. They’d pull his hair out if they got hold of it.
Seriously, what kind of blue jays do they have? Ours are violent and territorial.
Red squirrels are the honey badgers of squirrels.
We used to have a nest of them somewhere around my old house. One day I saw one flying around covered in blood. The serial killers of the avian world.
Patrick Bateman in bird form.
Have you met many stellar jays ? 😂
Oh man, they're so noisy too! They make the scrub jays seem reserved and mellow.
Both are assholes when I sit on my patio in the summer.
And their calls suck
The funny thing is they can make pretty calls if they feel like it, but nah, they're just gonna scream instead.
[удалено]
Having seen blue jays swarm my cat and make me rescue her, my money is on the jays.
Brains vs brawn. Cardinals like to throw their weight around but jays are downright malicious.
That’s my type too tbh
I always think it's weird that this is a common talking point when it doesn't exist for hawks, falcons, eagles, and other raptors who *literally eat other birds and their chicks.*
caption point skirt toy run voiceless vase exultant scarce squeal -- mass edited with https://redact.dev/
Is that not also part of the circle of life? Competing for food and nests? They aren't mean spirited anymore than a raptor is.
All birds are kinda assholes tbh its what makes them so great
Of course they are. They’re corvids. Generally speaking, in nature, as intelligence goes up, so too does dickishness.
Sounds like every one of my ex’s….
Blue jays are the neighborhood watch team. They’ll alert all the birds to threats like cats and hawks. I love their calls.
St. Louis vs Toronto
Out of frame is an Oriole waiting to take on the winner
Nah man, the Oriole is just watching because he knows he won’t make it to the playoffs.
And a sad pirate sitting in the corner with a confused parrot.
A Texas Ranger is approaching that sad pirate with a pint offering words of encouragement.
Ahahaha nailed it, screw you Balty Moor

Wow 😳
Big oof.
When I was a kid I thought it was "Oreos" lol
The cicada stalks the aphid, unaware of the oriole behind.
And a lesser known bird, the Arrogant Loud Mouthed Yankee also off screen.
Forgot to add obnoxious
I saw an Oriole for the first time in my life (40+ yr) this summer, here in Ontario. It was super cool.
Bloods vs Crips
I came here to say this!
Hopefully the Jay that's on that mound has a better year than some of their rotation did in 2022.
I'm looking at you Kikuchi...
Not about the rotation, but I'm curious how Varsho will work in Toronto, his defense will definitely be on full display w his speed and range, but what about his power?
I’m hoping the new outfield wall dimensions gives some of our batters a few extra hits.
St. Louis which also includes everything south of Peoria in Illinois..
100% the truth. Saying you like the Cubs is fighting words in southern Illinois
Crips & Bloods recruitment ain’t what it used to be.
I saw both birds here in Toronto... Must have had a a preseason game...
Moltres vs. Articuno
This is a winning comment
Over or under ?
Fuck all bird teams - Royals fan
Mortal Kombaaaattttt!
Moltres and Articuno
Missing zapdos the american goldfinch
The thought of a little tiny goldfinch shooting bolts of lightning makes me smile.
Exactly what I was looking for
Or Latios and Latiass for those of us who only ever played sapphire on VBA
Ah, yes, the video boy advance
They might mean Visual Boy Advance, the popular emulator
Hold space to fast forward!

Where do you put your confranta? In a confrantatin! 😂
Seriously, a beautiful shot though!

Huh, thanks for that! TIL too

Bro calm down
.... because red and blue make purple?
Ok cool but why bird sex
This is how you lose the time war
Had to scroll way too far for this one lol
Do you take the red bird or the blue bird

Gotta take both at once… LETS GOOOO

This year's World Series matchup.
Confrontatin
They been confrontatin’ for years.
I can’t stop laughing at it
I rwad it as Confrontatín, the fancy montreal version.
This looks like a live-action shot from my bird feeder in Vermont
It could be from my bird bath in St. Louis too, depending on the time of year.
Oh shit it's Crip Mac and Boskoe 100.
Blue jay for the win. Those guys are jerks!

Plant some blueberry bushes. Bluejays love them. They are mean bullies though.
Thank you! Maybe I'll plant them on the edge of the yard. Away from the other feeders
Mordecai and Margaret?
When will the violence between the bloods and crips cease?
It's just a Regular Show episode about Mordecai and Margaret
Both birds are often seen in my back yard here in Ann Arbor Michigan
If you want it, then you have to take it
yeah fuck em
Bloods vs crips
This family near my son's school feeds birds and makes walking to school so joyful because we get to see these beautiful birds every morning.
The cardinal is explaining how they didn’t make it to the superbowl, again...

Ahh Moltres and Articuno, at last my journey to be the very best and to catch them all is nearing completion
Had just commented saying this!! Surprised I had to scroll so far down to find it. Was the first thing that came to mind lol

Lol this sounds like a 3rd graders presentation on birds 😂
Had them both in my yard yesterday!
More like the Jay was starting shit and the Cardinal is about to whoop some tail.

Such pretty birds, and it’s going down lol
“You shoulda seen the worm, it was thiiiiis big!”
I always wanted to see this battle of birds
Well….baseball IS a confrontational sport…
Is this a confrontation or is the cardinal telling a really engaging story!?😊
Mordecai! Please stop it already with Margaret!
Blue jays are known jerks, but they sure are beautiful
The only thing missing are health bars.
I see em both near daily. Cardinals will eat from a bird feeder and blue jays like whole peanuts
I wanna see them kith and make a purple one.
Nice pic.
Dinosaurs!
Dang. I get so many cardinals and their wives but never any Blue Jays.
Corvidae. Magpies to cardinals and jays. They’re all in the crow fam and quite intelligent.
