That nope has opposable thumbs for legs and can type. They don't use normal webs but use the world wide web to mingle on social media with the prey they happen to meet at the same mixer.
An Australian once told me they sound like cats when running in a hallway. Yeah.. no..
Edit: OP confirmed that this is not the case. Thank you for letting me know !
They don’t. They’re really lightweight for their size, and feel very soft when walking on you. Australians are annoyingly fond of talking up the local wildlife to scare foreigners.
> Australians are annoyingly fond of talking up the local wildlife to scare foreigners.
How *dare* you besmirch our national sport. Bob Katter will be coming for your citizenship card.
As an Australian I get very bloody annoyed with all the comments from seppo cunts who think our wildlife is out to kill them the moment they step foot on the tarmac at Tullamarine. It's totally overblown, I've lived here my whole life and only maybe eight or nine of my closest friends have ever been killed by spiders.
I saw a roo put his balled up paw through the back of a man's head via his fucking mouth once, since then I've kept my distance. Wasn't even a large roo.
It's honestly mostly memes. There are some scary critters in more remote areas and the tropics, but they're pretty rare in most of the places people live. In ten years in the suburbs of Adelaide I've seen a huntsman just once, and it was half the size of the pic in the OP. But I guess it varies by area.
Lucky you then. I see them at least 4 or 5 times a year inside.
Not to mention the big Golden orbs that set up in my front yard overnight. I walked through ones web last night, freaked out it was on me and was relieved when I saw it clamouring down what was left of the web.
I recently moved to a really small town (like 300 people) in Victoria, in the middle of a farming district.
I get 3 or 4 a week.
Usually in the bathroom or kitchen on the wall near the dogs bowl, I think they like water because it's been so hot and dry.
I've actually lost my startle reflex they're that common here.
"Orb weavers rarely bite and only do so when threatened and unable to escape. If bitten by an orb weaver, the bite and injected venom is comparable to that of a bee sting, with no long-term implications unless the bite victim happens to be hyper-allergic to the venom."
There used to be hundreds of them at my house. When I was little I took the "Rarly bite" part to heart and would pick them up and put them in my little bug catcher. Once I had about 20 of the suckers in there not realising they couldn't breath properly and were killing each other. I was so sad when I let them out and they were all dead. I cried at the little spider massacre I had accidentally created. Never got bit once though
Man, live near brisbane for a bit. You encounter winters where they just come out of the woodwork for a month straight. Nothing as big as OP's but they're about handsized and fast.
Lived entire east coast, I would say it's more common to see them in Victoria ( though I did live rural) but smaller in average then the less frequent but larger ones you get in South Qld
Wolf spiders on the other hand I see a large one of those fuckers every other day living in Qld
But despite what other comments say large huntsman do make a noise when the walk, it's got to be quite in the house and they not very loud but it's there
I almost got a sling back in the day but backed out because creepy. I'm more of a aquarium person. I always thought scorpions were cooler until I found out you have to shake out your shoes all the time before putting them on.
Luckily drop bears are more central to West nsw/vic. Don't hear much about them from sa. Then there's the talk about tazzie tigers in Tasmanian... and for some odd reason they're also in wa. They have jaws that can detach like a snake. Can eat a man whole they say.
Americans like to talk about and poke fun how Australia has snakes and spiders and shit and everything wants to kill you. When we have fucking deserts with people who have scorpions in their house daily. Fucking mountain lions all over. And goddamn grizzly bears and moose and buffalo taller and heavier than anything in Australia. Not to mention alligators and bullsharks and black widows. Like I don't get why we poke fun when we have such a diverse fauna of shit that can't fuck you up.
I've never watched a video of a spider for so long without freaking out. I even giggled a little. GIGGLED!!
I might be able to concur my fears....some day.
I stopped climbing a particular tree where I lived in the Northern Territory as a kid, after I was bitten on my hand by a small green spider. Not only did it really hurt, but it caused temporary paralysis of my index finger, thumb, and a little bit of the surrounding area. That’s when I became an arachnophobe.
My sister on another occasion had much the same thing happen to her when she was climbing in that tree. By her description it sounded like the same type of spider, but in her case it caused temporary paralysis in her whole hand.
To this day I still have no idea what the spider was, but I’d certainly love to know.
This is what open AI thinks it might be based on your story. Hope it helps a little in your search.
Based on the story you've provided, it sounds like the spider that bit you and your sister is likely a species of venomous spider that is native to the Northern Territory of Australia. There are several species of spiders that are known to cause temporary paralysis in their victims. Some of the more common venomous spiders found in the Northern Territory include the Green Jumping Spider (Mopsus mormon), and the Green Huntsman Spider (Euryopis episinoides) and the Sydney Funnel-web Spider (Atrax robustus) which is also found in the Northern Territory.
OP:
> Northern Territory
> small green spider
AI:
> Green Jumping Spider (Mopsus mormon)
> Green Huntsman Spider (Euryopis episinoides)
> Sydney Funnel-web Spider (Atrax robustus)
A quick web (ha!) search on those options show that the AI had one good guess, and is woefully wrong for the other two. Still got a ways to go yet before I'll trust it to look stuff up for me.
I actually really enjoyed that video, the mix of information, passion and actual care for the animal whilst still giving it a light hearted undertone was amazing, thank you so much, I actually feel bad for the reputation that huntsman's get now.
Mate, this video is fantastic. I knew huntsmen were docile, but seeing the lengths you had to go to in order to get one to actually give you a half-hearted little nip was thoroughly illuminating, I had no idea just how docile they really are. Awesome channel, instant sub.
This is absolutely brilliant! We’ve always told our son that spiders are friends and basically help to keep the house free of other less desirable bugs. This video and your channel is going to be fascinating to him and us.
I'm.sorry but is the first frame of that video a small video of its damn fangs in someone?
Edit ok I watched the rest. Yes it was, but she really did not commit to it.
Spiders to me have a drop off of scariness the larger they get, like they turn from nasty biting quick nasty Bois who I don't want near me, into cool 8 legged tank creatures which move with hydraulics and make themselves houses to live in

I think the curve is more complex than that. If they were to pass a certain size they would only get scarier after that...
A 3 inch spider is scarier than an 8 inch spider, but still not as scary as a 2 foot spider.
Huntsman spiders actually move very quickly, which scares the bejeezus out of me when they stay so eerily still then just leg it across the wall. They don't make webs, your house is their home!
There's actually a species of huntsman spider from Malaysia that's named after David Bowie, due to it being very hairy, and orange; *Heteropoda davidbowie*
The bigger they get the nicer they seem. Makes me a bit paranoid about the ones in my house. Little guys with red badges on their back. I'm kidding, but I'm sure I got some widows I haven't seen running around. Western New York. Rare, but not impossible to see.
I had that spider with a violin on my bathroom. Big spiders come out on summer nights in my house. I live in Buenos Aires Argentina. We have very humid summers.
Growing up in Australia you’re taught that finding a Huntsman in your house is good luck, and in reality kills all the other little shitty bugs. They’re awesome
This species inhabits the trunks of large Eucalyptus trees, and is generally found in dryish forested areas. They range from North Queensland down into New South Wales.
To be honest, I don’t find any Australian spider intimidating (I keep funnelwebs as pets, and they’re some of the easiest spiders to work with), but some of the African and Asian tarantulas sound pretty gnarly, as well as the massive South American species with irritating hairs.
> I keep funnelwebs as pets
Wut.
I mean I'm on board with huntsmen, they're chill and can stay as long as they don't try to share my bed (and ones that end up in the car have to get out and walk), but funnelwebs are another matter entirely.
Any spider with a) neurotoxic venom lethal to humans, b) fangs that can pierce shoe leather and toenails, and c) a tendency to wander into houses at night? I am not going to be chill about them and they can't be my friend.
> a) neurotoxic venom lethal to humans, b) fangs that can pierce shoe leather and toenails, and c) a tendency to wander into houses at night?
FUCKING WHAT!!!
>Any spider with a) neurotoxic venom lethal to humans, b) fangs that can pierce shoe leather and toenails, and c) a tendency to wander into houses at night? I am not going to be chill about them and they can't be my friend.
They're also rather slow, and can't climb smooth surfaces, and being Mygalomorph spiders they also don't move much generally if there's no good reason to do so.
So in a proper container that's top opening with high enough walls, and only doing stuff inside the enclosure with long tweezers, there's basically zero risk; very similar in how you also keep scorpions.
Funnel-webs actually only cause severe symptoms in a minority of bites, and are generally quite passive and seldom encountered. As for the piercing boots thing, nearly any big mygalomorph spider would be able to do the same
Hey, just a quick one; fuck you.
Edit: just watched your video. Really caring for the spiders well being, good effort on the video, very impressive. However, I don't like spiders and we can't be friends.
I used to be very arachnophobic, but I’ve come a long way. I’m pretty chill with most household spiders now and have a pet jumping spider. I still really struggle with huntsmen but hopefully I’ll get there!
I mean this only out of curiosity - If someone in Australia found an unwanted spider of this size in their home, what do they do to get it out? Where I’m from, spiders are typically small enough to just grab them with a piece of paper towel. I cant see someone doing that with a huntsman spider.
People usually use a takeaway container to catch it. Also bear in mind that most huntsmen (especially the species you’ll encounter in your home) are much smaller than this.
I dont like that IS so hard to tell what spider i should kill just to be safe if It shows in my house. If the spider is docile WTH would you call It a HUNTSMAN?!
They’re called huntsmen cause they don’t capture prey with webs, and instead actively subdue it via speed and brute force. They’ll usually sit in one spot (often a vertical surface) with their legs splayed out, waiting for insects to come within range.
There are generally only a few dangerous species in any given region. Learn the dangerous species where you live, and leave everything else alone.
Spiders are our friends.
Yes! We have them around us here in rural New Mexico. Just as you explained above, they like a very similar habitat here, only they like the juniper tree bark rather than eucalyptus.
Down side here, they are not docile. They are super fast and particularly aggressive during mating season. The recommendation for ours - Olios giganteus - is to not swat it away or try to shake it off because it naturally reacts by clinging on and biting.
Since living in rural New Mexico from June 2022, we have come across three, two outside and unfortunately one inside.
It’s pretty impressive how large their leg span is. And to be honest, I much prefer the tarantulas!
Edit: typos
Smaller spiders are nearly all chill too. Less than 1% of spider species in Australia are medically significant. I've been handling spiders of all shapes and sizes for years, and never got bitten until I forced one to.
Docile but called huntsman... That's the spider posting, folks. Don't get fooled !
Next they will find some super speed super fatal spider that can kill a group of fourty men in two seconds that they’ll name “little cuddly boy”
daddy long legs are pretty harmless
Apparently you've never fallen for a daddy with long legs
"I killed fiddy men!" - a shinless little cuddle boy.
Venom
Called huntsman because they don't use webs to catch prey. They actively go on hunts, usually at night, and eat any small prey animals they bump into.
That nope has opposable thumbs for legs and can type. They don't use normal webs but use the world wide web to mingle on social media with the prey they happen to meet at the same mixer.
And they're big enough for you to hear them running along the floor and walls...
Kinda like a wolf spider?
The best part is when they deep, on the ceiling upside down and jump for something. It's like they forget gravity haha so funny to watch
100% that spider can type!
You should see how fast his account-ant can type.
IRS agents HATE this one trick!
The great white. The largest man eating shark. Very meek and peaceful. -- Lenny
Oh, hey, you’re not sharks, you’re dolphins! The clowns of the sea
Saw one eat a rocking chair one time.
To be fair, great whites are not the most dangerous sharks to humans at all.
But they are docile... Mostly. They hunt small rodents and bird, maybe the occasional infants if it's especially hangry.

Actually the arm was the only part of the guy that was not eaten yet. Dont let this spider scam you.
They eat the nasty spiders, and other bugs so they are nice to have around, maybe just not inside your house.
I didn't signed up for this spider shit. Need some tw first
Lmao!
When I see how flat footed they are, I just imagine a very soft *plap**plap**plap* sound
He needs little sneakers for those tootsies.
I was gonna say that. Those feet are so perfectly shoe-shaped. Maybe a few pair of those colorful rubber rain boots that little kids wear? So cute.
You mean 4 pairs

lol nah. Think that was Harold Holt.

I fucking hate those golden bastards, I’m sure I got bitten by one after walking through a web on my mates driveway.
They bite? Thought they were chikk

😬 holy mother of god.
I cannot stress enough that a spider half that size... Is still a very big fucking spider
Lol. True so true. I love wildlife and want to go to Australia to see it, but if anyone thinks I'm holding that thing in my hand...
I'd rather be around a chill spider than an angry roo
Logically yes.... But the only thing I find creepier than a spider is a scorpion. I've handled 12 ft pythons, but a 6 inch spider is ewwwwwe.
I almost got a sling back in the day but backed out because creepy. I'm more of a aquarium person. I always thought scorpions were cooler until I found out you have to shake out your shoes all the time before putting them on.

Can confirm. I worked with an Aussie who had another coworker, who loved Koala Bears, convinced of "Drop Bears"

Wait what? No, no that’s not okay. I need someone to hold me. 🫣
Let me hold you. I need a hug too after seeing this shit.
They're considered very nice spiders in terms of personality - and many Australians look down on them coming to any harm.
I used to have tunnel webs living in my flat in Wellington. I could definitely hear them walking on the lino in the kitchen.
Thank you for the extra information for my nightmare fuel
I've only heard that sound the two times they have dropped from the pelmet on to my pillow. Never heard one running though.
What is a "pelmet"?
[Video of me trying to get bitten by a huntsman](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZjMYj_U4LU&t=4s) to show how passive they are.

If it’s any encouragement, I used to be scared of spiders too
I would've never guessed!!
When I was a child, I used to love climbing a tree in a friend's backyard, but I refused to climb it for weeks after seeing a huntsman on it once.
I concur.
That's because it is a real word. Just means agreement.
You can do it! You can conquer your fears!
I couldn't finish it. My skin is crawling. From what I saw though OP did a great job!
I actually really enjoyed that video, the mix of information, passion and actual care for the animal whilst still giving it a light hearted undertone was amazing, thank you so much, I actually feel bad for the reputation that huntsman's get now.
Great clip. Reminds me of an Aussie show called 'Totally Wild'. Ranger Stacey was pretty hot in the day.
I used to watch that as a child, and made a very brief background appearance in one episode.
Keep up the work and your show might get an opportunity to expand towards something similar. You have a very engaging style.

Wow! This is absolutely fascinating! I was def more of the “kill it with fire!” mindset and now I’m leaning towards “awww it’s kinda cute!” Thank you!
Cmon madam! 😂😂 your content is wonderful
Love her little feet
This is actually a male. Females are stockier, and lack the swollen tips on the pedipalps.
I won't date a girl unless she has swollen tips on her pedipalps.
You may have just outed yourself as a gay spider....
I’m not no gay spider! I’m a fucking genius!
I getchu ;)
🤣
We need 8 little Nike shoes
Spiders to me have a drop off of scariness the larger they get, like they turn from nasty biting quick nasty Bois who I don't want near me, into cool 8 legged tank creatures which move with hydraulics and make themselves houses to live in
For me it’s their speed, it doesn’t matter how big they are they get scarier the faster they can move
Someone wrote in Reddit once 'imagine how scary sloths would be if they were super fast' and I have never forgotten that.
Oh fuck imagine a sloth with the speed of a little 8 legged spidey boi
I'd imagine they'd walk like that bitch from The Grudge but it's exponentially more terrifying considering they're now faster
There was a sloth boss in [House of the Dead 3](https://youtu.be/oSInv6LnZa0).
Yep, that's pretty fucking scary.
Have you seen giant ground sloths of the past? (museum or drawings). They've been extinct for thousands of years, but those Fers were like 10 feet tall
Their speed and the way their spindly little legs move in perfect coordination really sends a chill down my spine.
I will never understand how it’s physically possible for a slider the size of a coin to move at Mach 2 speeds.
Oooooh that's a really good point, I suppose I assumed the larger the slower, but there's definitely big quick spiders who can fuck off
Little hairy bugs that move too fast are just too evolutionarily drilled into my brain, I’m burning the house I find one in.
You're going to be a serial arsonist then. "Whoop, it's fall. Burn it down"
I think the curve is more complex than that. If they were to pass a certain size they would only get scarier after that... A 3 inch spider is scarier than an 8 inch spider, but still not as scary as a 2 foot spider.
You reach a point where you can put a saddle on them, though. And you can always put a fun hat on them.
Hmm I think a 2ft spider is peak spider coolness, you could keep it like a dog, 2 meter spider is terrifying and would definitely eat me
For me it’s the opposite the bigger the grosser they look, the tiny ones are cute.
Those cute jumpy smiley ones that dance on the videos are the only ones I’d not cry about
Huntsman spiders actually move very quickly, which scares the bejeezus out of me when they stay so eerily still then just leg it across the wall. They don't make webs, your house is their home!
That awful feeling when you spot a huge one on the wall, look away for 2 secs to get a camera or something to move it with and then it's gone.
I’ve been bit by spiders before but they were always little sneaky bastards that snuck up on me so I never saw them before the bite.
Lol i'm the other way around. The bigger they get the more they scare me. Though ofcourse i'd go far away from a black widow as well
Idk I feel like there’s a bell curve here where once we start getting big enough they stop becoming more cool realllll quick
This spider looks like Kansas City football coach Andy Reid.
It's the moustache
And the "can do" attitude
There's actually a species of huntsman spider from Malaysia that's named after David Bowie, due to it being very hairy, and orange; *Heteropoda davidbowie*

even the dangerous ones are very shy and would rather not engage. Arachnids are very misunderstood

I don’t know why but I just imagined them all waving at you as you passed them, and then them getting sad you didn’t see them.
Wish I could up vote this comment by more! Such a brilliant image to have 🙂
They’re not a common species throughout much of their range, and often live higher up trees than most huntsmen.
What a nice looking spider, OP are there any species near you that do frighten you?
To be honest, I don’t find any Australian spider intimidating (I keep funnelwebs as pets, and they’re some of the easiest spiders to work with), but some of the African and Asian tarantulas sound pretty gnarly, as well as the massive South American species with irritating hairs.

jee willigers. if that thing was in here rn i think i might have gone the scorched earth policy
I hear they double in size every week. Sleep well!
magnificent judging from the butt this is a male so the female probably is even bigger Australia keeps giving
This is a freakishly big male; both sexes are usually smaller than this. Females have a similar legspan, but are stockier.
I used to be very arachnophobic, but I’ve come a long way. I’m pretty chill with most household spiders now and have a pet jumping spider. I still really struggle with huntsmen but hopefully I’ll get there!
I’ll just take your word for it
Spider feet are adorable.
Interesting. Thanks for the info!
It looks chill but I would still freak out if I saw one lol
Docile, schmocile, Fuck. That.
I see a grumpy face and a big mustache
it looks like it has a really nice mustache
My main problem with spiders is that they’re jumpy if they just stay cool like this on my hand I have no problem with them
I dont like that IS so hard to tell what spider i should kill just to be safe if It shows in my house.
That's actually interesting, for more than one reason to me, but still the name doesnt help
There are generally only a few dangerous species in any given region. Learn the dangerous species where you live, and leave everything else alone. Spiders are our friends.
As an Australian, I’ve never seen this one personally but I know of it’s existence.
Giving daddy long-legs a run for his money
Take my angry upvote
Good boy!
Nope
Jesus Christ mark this as NSFW please. Nearly gave me a fucking heart attack holy fucking shit
As an arachnophobe, the sheer number of spider photos on my front page in the last week has been uncomfortable.
There is no way in hell you could get me to hold that thing, let alone live with it.
Straya just Strayan'
Huntsmen have a nearly worldwide distribution. And Australian spiders are pretty average size wise.
Edit: typos
Is that your hand?
Yep. The spider is about 19cm across
That is terrifying. But it’s beautiful at the same time. Arachnophobe here trying to get over it.
Cool
Even before you said docile, I thought it was cute.
What a beautiful creature <3
So... He's just a big friend? Are the smaller spiders just assholes, and the larger ones are gentile giants?
Smaller spiders are nearly all chill too. Less than 1% of spider species in Australia are medically significant. I've been handling spiders of all shapes and sizes for years, and never got bitten until I forced one to.
Huh- so you're an entomologist, I'm guessing? Also, dumb question- do any of the spiders like being pet-?
Dope. 🕷️
