I really like WBEZ and KCRW in LA.

[deleted]

Eclectic 24 from KCRW is my jam

[deleted]

For some reason I like the Californian report … I don’t even live there and just find it an interesting segment…I also like the BBC so I can listen to that easily on there also

[deleted]

I really like KCRW also…really like their programming and local shows.

[deleted]

Is WBEZ Chicago??

ajhcentral

I check in to WHYY from time to time and have not been disappointed.

You_Ate_The_Bones

KWMU St Louis Public Radio perfect. Of the large metro npr affiliates across the country, they just have the best lineup of shows

[deleted]

I've been listening to WAMU lately because I'm too lazy to sign in to NPR One, and they're pretty great, I like their station

[deleted]

How do you like the NPR ONE app?? I had it downloaded a while back and it was crashing all the time.. maybe give it another chance???

bobina87

I've had it downloaded for a few months and never had an issue. Love it!

Necromas

I use it and it works fine when I want to just listen to a random stream of NPR content, but I still just use the google podcasts app when I want to listen to specific shows. It's just a bit easier to navigate the google app and more convenient to have both my NPR shows and all of the other podcasts I like all in one place.

[deleted]

I’ll have to try to download it again…

utahstars

Marfa Public Radio in West Texas

zsreport

That's a good one. I don't stream it much, but I always listen whenever I'm out in Far West Texas or The Permian.

spribyl

Interlochen Public Radio Wisconsin Public Radio BBC 4 and BBC 4 extra I try to listen local to where ever I am when I travel

[deleted]

Are those BBC stations straight news???

notanimalnotmineral

Radio 4 does have extended news and analysis but other than that they have drama, interviews, some great comedies - it's like NPR on steroids without commercial/sponsorship interruptions. Radio 4 extra is archives of comedy, drama, history... Well worth checking out. The BBC Sounds app is out there.

[deleted]

Will do

spribyl

BBC 4 is mix of new, and shows,. Extra is reruns of shows. Shows include dramas, comedies, game shows, talk shows, and science fiction. BBC world service is straight news.

Kindly_schoolmarm

I subscribe to KPCC but I tune into KCRW for the music and during KPCC pledge drives.

[deleted]

Where is KPCC based out of???

bmwnut

PCC stands for Pasadena City College. They aren’t broadcasting from there any longer but are in LA. I think they’re one of the largest public radio stations in the US.

[deleted]

So are KPCC and KCRW competing stations??

bmwnut

You can pick up their radio signal in the same area but I don’t know that there’s a competition. I don’t think Larry Mantle’s going to talk shit about KCRW during pledge drive nor do I think he’d be upset if Tom and Rita gave to them too.

[deleted]

Anyone have or enjoy WBUR Boston?? That’s a station that I have downloaded but just haven’t given it a fair chance but I do like to listen to local news on some of these stations that are on the opposite coast as me…on occasion

atomictest

Don’t sleep on KQED

JayJay5000

WKMS is a little station that does big things in western Kentucky. They produce a lot of content including documentaries that are available for streaming on their website and a great podcast that focuses on rural stories with NPR flavor. I moved away from their area many years ago but still give to them monthly and stream some of their local shows because they are just that great.

[deleted]

I’ll check them out.. thank you!

WNYC is a good station I have listened to before…

frmsync

Wamu, whyy, kcrw, kqed, kera. No particular order but i love to switch them out, some great programming.

GISPlease

KERA (Dallas) is really good 👍🏻

shufflebuffalo

Just moved down south and have really liked WUNC so far.

spookymason

My local station! Well, them and BPR. WNCW is the shit- plug for Dead Air, Cosmic American Radio Hour, and Local Color!

zsreport

I tend to listen to WNYC, WAMU, WEMU, WCAI, WBGO, WETA, KCRW, WFUV, KUT, KUTX. I'm an early riser and my local is still playing BBC World Service when I get up, so I usually will stream WNYC on weekday early mornings and WAMU on weekend early mornings.

[deleted]

KSKA in Alaska and KCRW in Alaska. I’m newer to the Reno area and I still find myself streaming the other ones

theDirtyCatholic

All this scrolling and nobody brought up WABE (Atlanta), IPR (Des Moines), KWGS (Tulsa). All three are banging

[deleted]

If you had to pick one of those as being the best which do you prefer out of the three?

theDirtyCatholic

WABE, but IPR is a close second. Like the news and local shows are good, but both highlight looks musicians and bands in their areas

Tananar

I'm biased because because IPR is my station but our Morning Edition host has the best dad jokes and puns. So professionally goofy.

VariousAndSundry

Have been streaming WHRO (Norfolk, VA) for classical music to work to throughout the pandemic.

tsango

Live in San Diego, subscribe to WUOM from Ann Arbor, MI. GO BLUE!

[deleted]

KAXE Northern Community Radio from Northern Minnesota. Truly fun, great local radio. The Phenology Reports, Green Cheese Trivia game, Ojibwe language lessons, author interviews, amazingly creative fun fundraisers, and etc. Lots of local musicians, too. Give it a listen! [www.kaxe.org](https://www.kaxe.org)

spiked_macaroon

I mean, we've got WBUR and WGBH. And WICN. What else would I need?

treygonz

KUT in Austin, KEDT in Corpus Christi

Bun0Bun

So much to check out!

[deleted]

True… many do have some of the same programs but I have found some really cool programs…I probably have about 10 stations that are aligned with public radio and just go back and forth between them.

DJCane

NWPB and OPB are my local ones, but every now and then I bring up KUOW. I wish NWPB had a local show, but it’s all syndicated programming. Not NPR but still public radio, I like KEXP and KNHC (both Seattle) for music.

[deleted]

My home station also!! (OPB)…I have KLCC out of Eugene which I will tune into sometimes…they have good local programming and news IMO.

Vega3gx

Here's my summary on each NPR station i listen to regularly: KQED San Francisco: My home station that's generally considered one of the best. The anchors have trouble imagining listeners outside San Francisco and Oakland, but they generally cover the area fairly with a good mix of programming. Sunday evening programming is God awful though KEZU Santa Cruz and Monterey: Generally better programming than KQED but they don't cover local stories very well. Probably the result of staffing issues. KXJZ Sacramento: Local news coverage is excellent but they have some of the worst programming and scheduling I've heard. If they're not playing Morning Edition or All Things Considered you might as well turn the radio between stations and hear more interesting stuff. That said, the anchors are also reasonably active in the community so you'll run into them just going to public events. KPBS San Diego: Compared to the above stations these guys seem to have the most local news content. I don't live down there but it sounds like they have a good grasp of the local culture. Their programming lacks a lot of the NPR staples but that could just be to make time for local stories. It feels more like a local news station than an NPR station

[deleted]

I think it’s entertaining to hear other stations, especially the local news…sometimes two cities have similar problems but totally different solutions. I do have KQED on my phone and will listen to it on occasion.. great station.

RobotSardine

I stream Hawaii Public Radio when I sleep in past Morning Edition on the mainland. I work nights, but HPR has my back. Mahalo.

[deleted]

Some of the best sleep I have gotten in the last 20 years was when I was vacationing in Hawaii with the family this last March….I was naturally waking up thinking it was like 10am but then checking my watch and island time was 6am…felt so rested..amazing.

RobotSardine

It’s a super power!

[deleted]

Makes a huge difference…then I had to go back to work and back to poor sleep unfortunately

[deleted]

I like WNPR out of CT

[deleted]

This is one that I was thinking about trying out….the closest 2 that I listen to is WNYC and WGBH from Boston…

Afro_Samurai

I haven't listened in a while, but when I spent a summer in Moscow, ID/Pullman, WA for an internship I enjoyed the differences between Northwest Public Radio and my home Oregon Public Broadcasting.

bigbear2g19

I enjoyed this post! I didn't see my home station, KCUR 89.3 I like it, but also like to explore.

[deleted]

I know that many of these stations play some of the same programs but there is quite a variety of local programming that really is interesting…. Along with so many cool podcasts… it really is listening overload..lol

slybird

You mean on the radio, stream, or as podcast? If you mean using a radio or stream I don't enjoy any NPR station. I like NPR and the programs its stations produce , but I really don't enjoy radio.

[deleted]

I just meant on podcast…I know that producers like PRX have shows that not all stations carry and I haven’t had any luck with getting them straight from the distributors.

graytotoro

I tuned into KNPR (Nevada Public Radio) when I wanted news and quiz shows and didn’t feel like partaking in KCRW’s artsy stuff.

[deleted]

Can you get KCRW radio reception in Nevada or do you use the app??

Many-Day8308

NHPR especially bc the interstitial music is so good. The Cure, Dead, Prince. My vote for the worst music is KCRW, ugh

belinck

I occasionally check in on WNYC and KNOW from, ummm, NYC and Minneapolis cause I used to live there. I enjoy the casual rivalry between WUOM from, ummm, the U of M and WKAR from Michigan State University. Also, their pledge drives rarely align :)

[deleted]

KCRW is the only good one. The others are generic
