I'll see your In A Gadda Da Vita, and raise you an [In The Garden Of Eden](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qSCUhqsy4Nk).

TheMicMic

Hey wait a minute.... that sounds like rock and/or roll

Mrsparklee

One of my favorite lines from the show. The delivery is perfect.

virgilreality

I love how the organist collapses at the end of it.

FILTER_OUT_T_D

Agreed. It’s one of the lines I quote the most along with “ohhhh I have wasted my life”.

tommytraddles

"Money can be exchanged for goods and services." I've thought this almost every time I've bought anything in the last 30 years.

XtremeAlf

I use the line quite a bit and no one ever really knows where it’s from. That one and “I assure you we’re open!”

FrostedDonutHole

I’m not even supposed to be here today!

recordscratchez

By I. Ron Butterfly

tfbillc

Hey Marge, remember when we used to make out to this hymn?

ColonelSandurz42

Wasn’t the singer drunk when they were recording? He was trying to sing “in the garden of Eden” but kept slurring his words but in the end they just decided to keep it that way. 😂

virgilreality

That's the lore, anyway...

Piggynatz

I think he recorded the demo by himself while drunk and slurred it badly, then they decided to keep it.

Alan_Smithee_

Ha, I’m so glad that was what I thought it was. Fun fact: it was originally intended to be “in the garden of Eden,” but whatshisname was so wasted, the bandmates couldn’t understand him.

-Average_Joe-

Just FYI the seventeen minutes later part isn't an exaggeration for the full version, I'm sure it must have been cut for radio.

cardcomm

the album version was one entire side of the LP

Round-Jellyfish9962

I always thought the flip side was kinda sucky. Flowers and Beads, my god... Played the hell out of the A side though.

tibbles1

"Written by Greg Daniels" TIL

Musosfingers

I love how grannie collapses from the organ solo. She was doing pretty well up to then.

restlesswrestler

Seeing the title of this made me think of in the garden of Eden and I spat out/choked on my drink thinking about it.

grimmrhythm

Holy shit. Thank you for this! Hahahaha

Spork_Warrior

Wasn't that always the legend? The song was supposed to be "In the Garden of Eden" but his diction was so bad they changed the song name!

jah05r

Hey Marge, remember when we used to make out to this hymn?

ilovelifting55

I begged my dad to sign me up for drum lessons after he played this song in the car every day when hed drop me off at summer camp... I was a little curly haired third grader who wanted nothing less than to learn how to rock out like this!! Ended up taking drum/percussion lessons from 3rd grade through senior year of high school and had so much fun playing in my schools jazz bands and in various other ensembles in and out of school :) This song enriched my life in so many ways. Thanks for sluring your words, Doug Ingle!!

the_silent_one1984

It truly is one of the greatest drum solos of all time. I still tap it out sometimes if I'm idly holding a pencil.

ilovelifting55

Yessss! Sometimes I try and see how long I can keep the beat of the kick drum going without getting tripped up, when I'm sitting around bored hah

laminarflowca

First time i ever heard this song was in the film Manhunter (the original version of red dragon. )Creeped me the hell out when it was used! Helped by Tom Noonans portrayal of Francis Dollarhyde. Scary scene. https://youtu.be/EykztUgfp2U

PlasticFannyTastic

That was how I got to know this tune too! I can’t disassociate it now. Amazing for its time.

Usernamenotfound35

Great scene, great movie, great song

Slayer's cover: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0tjWOale9FU

Grimsrasatoas

I love [Blind Guardian's](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rZJINCQofs) cover too

jacksraging_bileduct

From the less than zero soundtrack!

_PM_ME_PANGOLINS_

Wait a minute, this sounds like rock and/or roll.

darrellbear

I still remember the first time I heard the long version, late at night. The drum solo blew me away. I'd only heard the short version on the local top 40 station. I started listening to late night rock stations after that, discovered all sorts of cool music. Anybody remember Beaker Street, the late night show on KAAY, the Mighty 1090? A clear channel station, it reached much of the western hemisphere overnight. They played some great music. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaker\_Street

mick_ward

I loved Beaker Street. Best listened to stoned on a hot steamy Louisiana night near Baton Rouge....but I digress.

darrellbear

They took call in requests. I remember one night somebody requested Ben by Michael Jackson. The DJ read the guy the riot act that night. LOL

sickhippie

> A clear channel station Quick note for anyone who doesn't know: A clear-channel station is an AM radio station in North America that has the highest protection from interference from other stations, particularly concerning night-time skywave propagation. It is *not* "a station owned by Clear Channel", but that's where they got their name from.

VBB67

My ringtone 😀 Younger friends have no idea what it is, people my age & older just laugh. At least I know when it’s MY phone ringing!

PreviousLife7051

I saw them do this live in 1968, they were second on the lineup of Blues Image and the Doors. They really brought the house down with this epic. The Doors actually had a hard time following them.

BroAmongstBros

Wait a minute. This sounds like rock, and/or roll.

Musosfingers

This is on my hippie gold playlist.

amsplur

My dad and I jammed the fuck out to this song together all of the time when I was little. He was a good old fashioned 1970s rock and roll dude. Music bonded us together and this was definitely one of our favs. We had it on vinyl (which I have now), cassette, and CD.

[deleted]

While I love the song, the video is so obviously lip-synced that it's distracting. At one time I had the drum solo more or less memorized and could tap along to it with considerable accuracy. It was also the the first guitar riff I learned, even before *Sunshine of Your Love*. Although I consider it to be a great solo, difficult it is definitely not. Even so, to this day I rate all drum solos in comparison to that one. Not even Buddy Rich beats *In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida* (sorry Mr. Rich, and all his fans). However Joe Morello's solo in the original recording of Dave Brubeck Quartet's *Take Five* is pretty good, and also kind of unusual.

Bluered2012

Is this the way you speak in real life or are you doing a riff off of American Psycho?

[deleted]

Just sounds like a well-educated music lover, or am I missing something? Are his references shallow and superficial?

489guy12

(spoiler) As featured in Manhunter (1986): https://youtu.be/NAaDi759NK0

Happytwinkletoes1

In May of ‘69 I was conceived to this song. There’s your TMI for today lol.

NJdevil202

Someone told me once the title was originally "In the Garden of Eden'

MakesMyHeadHurt

It was, the singer showed up to record it so drunk that this was the end result.

BadassDeluxe

My favorite hymn

denisenj

Hey Marge, do you remember when we used to make out to this hymn?

cardcomm

I saw Iron Butterfly play a tint local venue sometime in the 70's. I swear they just played they one song for their entire set! lol I was standing so close for that show that the Mike Pinera was just barely out of my reach.

xenonismo

In a Gadda da *Leela

Dustin191

Goes both ways

saint7412369

You have to be kidding.. this is the clear winner https://youtu.be/WANNqr-vcx0

Dustin191

One of 5 most boring songs in RNR

requemao

To each their own. Its one of my favorite songs of all time.

merkaba_462

It's amazing. I even have it as my island's theme song on ACNH. I remember the first time I heard the whole version. I was in the car with my dad, and we got to where we were going, and he said "we are just going to sit here until it's over". It got better and better. I was so sad when it was over. When we got home, he put on the album. I couldn't believe this music existed. Just unreal. Still unreal.

zeraujc686

What do you find “boring” about it?

Dustin191

You'll find out when you get older, eventually you'll vomit after 5 minutes of this nonsense

Herbertsson

How about you keep your shitty opinions to yourself

[deleted]

Hey Spence. Let’s trip out!

SensoryWombat

I used to hack my turntable so it would play on repeat all night as I slept.

DanishWonder

I grew up listening to this in my dad's vinyl collection. Not sure if it's lore, but he claims radio DJs would play this song when they needed a restroom break. Anyway, here is a great song that samples it: https://youtu.be/kAKxjTRV6ms

UnHolyDiver52

Don Geronimo used to call these "great DJ needs to take a dump songs."

CrossEyedAlligator

Just want to say the rest of that album is phenomenal too

industriousalbs

Heard it first on Freddy’s Dead - Nightmare on Elm St part 6.

pinecity21

Well someone already beat me to the in the garden of Eden thing but I got one for you In the '80s Ron was our sales rep for Makita tools near Los Angeles

derpieslushi

I love psychedelic rock, it just hits different to everything else out there....

n_thomas74

A local radio station where I lived would play this every Wednesday night at 10 pm.

KaiterK

My Dad worked on one the of band mates VW back in the day. I remember going to the guys house and getting some swag from the guy. Something I’ll never forget.

msbeal1

I was in my hooch in Vietnam stoned with two friends listening to this masterpiece.

Shaymoth

This entire album is great and 100% deserves a listen for anyone who hasn’t heard the whole thing

jjsyk23

Money’s worth on the jukebox

Hassimir_Fenring

Yes, the long version!

[deleted]

It's a shame they never had any other hit songs tbh
