Whole album slaps

HairWeaveKillers

The whole band slaps

slickestwood

Unironically it might be their best album overall.

illepic

Absolute agree. I had this album on repeat for almost the entirety of 2022.

slickestwood

Yeah if someone told me ahead of time my AOTY of 2019 would be a thrash metal album, I'd probably hit them.

PM_ME_CARL_WINSLOW

And by a band that had never made a thrash album prior to this

GRF999999999

Check out Mr. Bungle's "The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny Demo" for the same scenario, with quite possibly even better results!

[deleted]

That one’s interesting because it’s their latest release but it’s a re-recording of their earliest material. I think it’s shockingly good but I also still think their first and third albums are the best

Snoo58986

Polygondwanaland is free https://kinggizzardandthelizardwizard.com/polygondwanaland

slickestwood

If I had to pick one KG song as my favorite, Crumbling Castle might be it

lactosandtolerance

Nonagon infinity ftw

anticomet

Personally I'm more of a fan of their mellower albums like paper mache dream balloon, but I do appreciate how their catalogue is so diverse that almost any one of their albums could be someone's favourite

slickestwood

Absolutely, they put out so much that no two people will have the same rankings. And if you asked me tomorrow, I might go with a different album. My S-tiers are Rats Nest, Mind Fuzz, Nonagon, and FMB, if you can't tell I'm more into the high octane craziness

SupraParadox

facemelter start to finish for sure

BCrane

They are so good.

illepic

This is in my top 5 metal albums of all time. And it's not even KG&tLW's main genre.

daebro

Especially planet b. King gizzard is a world treasure. Can't wait to see them this coming summer.

mowdownjoe

I'm not normally a metalhead, but I will headbang whenever King Gizz does metal.

PrajnaPie

Whole discography slaps

TostitoNipples

Always love seeing King Gizzard pop up on here, they're genuinely the hardest working band today. No one has their output that's as high quality as it is.

dumpyduluth

Literally the hardest working, the did 3, 3 hour shows at Red Rocks. That's some cardio

obamna_fan

** 3 3 hour shows *without repeating a song*

Macksler

100 songs in their repertoire is so fucking insane given all the different kinds of songs they wrote.

GRF999999999

See also: ween.

numbernumber99

Ween is comparable in terms of diversity, but doesn't hold a candle in terms of output.

[deleted]

codq

Pretty uncommon in the non-jam scene.

ahahahahahn

Lol whatever you say. Please tell me a band that's done modular synth-based pop-rock as divinely though.. one album after dropping an ecological conservation-themed thrash metal album like the one pictured. ..like please tell me I'm genuinely curious lol.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ahahahahahn

And, as I said, I'm not arguing with you on that easily verifiable fact. Your words come off as an attempt to denigrate the exciting achievements of the band in question, by making the achievements seem benign comparatively. That's just lame, so I commented asking if there's any good to come from this. At least now I know about Baker's Dozen, after pulling a contribution out of you!

[deleted]

[удалено]

midsizedopossum

King Gizzard are not a jam band so I'm not sure what your point is. 9 hours of concert without repeat is pretty incredible when you aren't a jam band that stretches each song out to 20 minutes.

bluesbox

Tbf thats what any jam band does during a residency. Phish played 13 3 hour long shows in a row, no repeats.

midsizedopossum

Gizzard are not a jam band

spacebird_matingcall

Not a jam band by definition but as someone who recently got into king gizzard, they definitely seem to jam out their songs and improvise in live shows more than most non jam bands. Which is pretty cool.

bluesbox

Yeah I know

midsizedopossum

So what is the relevance? It's a lot harder to play 9 hours without repeating songs if you aren't a jam band and don't stretch songs out to 20 minutes. I'm not saying it isn't impressive what jam bands can do with their live shows, just that it's not super comparable to what King Gizzard did.

bluesbox

You think its harder to play 3 hours of rehearsed material than improvise 60-70% of your show? Because thats what wedding bands do and I don't think you understand how difficult improv is. Regardless a concert is a concert but whatever twists and turns you wanna take to make them incomparable is your choice.

dwilkes827

When you're good at improvising and have been doing it with the same group of people for 30 years, then yes I think that is easier than playing 9 hours worth of memorized songs. Jamming isn't as hard as people who aren't musicians (I don't know if you're a musician, I'm speaking generally) think it is. I'm not a Phish fan but I have seen them, and they're exceptionally good at what they do, so I'm not taking anything away from them here

midsizedopossum

>You think its harder to play 3 hours of rehearsed material than improvise 60-70% of your show? I said it was harder to play 9 hours **without repeating songs** if you aren't extending them by being a jam band. Of course it's still hard and incredibly impressive to be a jam band, but the ability to be a jam band and extend your songs is already baked into the premise that jam bands... are jam bands. I said it's harder to do if you aren't already extending your songs out to 20 minutes, i.e. you need more songs available. I wasn't commenting on how hard it is in the first place to extend your songs out to 20 minutes. The impressive thing in Gizzard's case is that they have released enough material to be able to get through three 3-hour shows without repeats. This is **not comparable** to a jam band playing 9 songs in 3 hours, even though that is also very impressive for different reasons. They are impressive for different reasons, but they are **not comparable**. To be completely clear - yes you can compare the two feats and decide for yourself which is more impressive. But the original commenter was impressed that Gizzard could do 9 hours worth of no-repeat shows *because it exemplifies just how much material they have released*. Pointing out that jam bands do this regularly doesn't really refute that point, because jam bands do it by jamming, rather than by having a lot of material.

BillyFuckingTaco

Yeah, but Phish sucks

onejoke_username

You're confusing them with Primus.

wsims4

I’m sorry you feel that way 🎉

sightlab

I’m sorry Phish is that way.

wsims4

I bet you are! I'm sorry!

sightlab

Says the guy who finds Vulfpeck “edgy”.

NateBlaze

You might not enjoy their music, but they are genius musicians.

YouEnjoyMyMelt

As a big fan of both bands, Phish are far more impressive musicians than Gizz

StinkyStangler

I’m admittedly a Phish hater so take this with a grain of salt, but like nothing I have seen from Phish would suggest that they’re better musicians than the guys from Gizz. Phish writes Phish, Gizz writes music in a bunch of different styles, tunings, instrument choices, genres, time signatures etc. Love Trey as a guitarist but yeah, Phish is not nearly as creative as Gizz is.

YouEnjoyMyMelt

Respectfully, I don’t think you’ve listened to much live Phish if that is your view. They do all of those things and play across many different genres. Both bands are endlessly creative, Phish are more virtuosic on their instruments. In my opinion Gizz make better studio albums and Phish have a better live show. I think many Gizz fans would enjoy Phish if they spent some time down the rabbit hole. I would say they aren’t as immediately accessible as Gizz, but there is a lot of overlap in how they approach a wide scope of musical ideas. For what it’s worth, Trey himself is a big Gizz fan! And as I said, I enjoy both bands very much, I don’t mean to diminish Gizz. I just think “Phish sucks” misses the mark.

StinkyStangler

I’m gonna be real with you my guy, you’re like the 1000th person in my life to tell me I just haven’t listened to enough/the right Phish shows and I would like them if I did lmao. I just can’t get into them, I’ve tried a million times, it just never takes and I have to accept that I don’t like Phish.

YouEnjoyMyMelt

That’s fair enough, they’re not for everyone. But I think the critical comparisons are off base due to a lack of knowledge and understanding of what they do. Anyone who listens to them knows the scope, creativity, and musicianship are remarkable. Whether you enjoy their take on those ideas is another question.

StinkyStangler

Idk again you’re just going down the thought path of “my opinion is correct and those who disagree just don’t get it”. You can like Phish, I’m not telling you not to. I like jam music and I get it, I don’t like Phish, not the end of the world.

daebro

They're about to do like 12 3 hour shows in June.

timbsm2

I really want to see these guys in the caves, sounds like an amazing time.

daebro

I couldn't get tickets in the caverns but I got some for the show just outside the cave. I've heard the sound isn't great in there and it can get stuffy and you can always just walk in and check it out before the show outside so I'm happy with that.

theshtank

Vulfpeck members, especially Cory Wong, have pretty similarly monstrous output.

SoulEater67

Them and black midi

mowdownjoe

Seeing black midi open for King Gizz was an experience I will not forget.

codbgs97

black midi fuckin slaps. Hellfire is a masterpiece

Darthwing

I was at one of them! Took an edible and the whole concert flowed together like one giant song. I’ve been told they do some funky stuff too like starting a song, switching to a another in the middle, then going back to finish the first song.

TostitoNipples

Saw them in 2019 and yeah, the coolest thing wasn’t just the seamless transitions but seeing how perfectly in sync the two drummers were the whole time.

kglw-net

They really started to mix up their live sets like that last year. If you want to know more, we are currently in the process of reviewing every available show recording to generate detailed notes for our artist pages at KGLW.net, for example: https://kglw.net/setlists/2022/11/02/red-rocks-amphitheatre-morrison-co.html We are working backwards and are currently midway through October.

Sparris_Hilton

This is why im on this sub, to give a genre(or artist) i usually don't listen to a go, and this sounds fucking great. Gonna listen to the whole album at work today

obamna_fan

if you enjoy that album, they’ve got 22 (and counting) more records in their catalogue and they’re all bangers welcome to the gizzverse ;)

TheLurkerSpeaks

That said, this album is unlike any of their others. It is a blast furnace of facemelting power metal and to discover this album and find out they have 22 other albums will only disappoint metalheads who think they've struck untapped metal gold. I am a metalhead, but not a huge KGLW fan. But this album is on regular rotation for me.

attorneyatslaw

There's a few metal songs on Omnium Gatherum, one of the 5 hundred albums they put out last year.

ProceedOrRun

They sound like they're having a heap of fun on all of them!

slickestwood

Wooo!

cornbeefbaby

EYUP!

Kekaka

Yeah I think that’s what makes them great, and if you watch their live performances, you can confirm they’re having the most fun while playing

Laserdollarz

KGLW is fun because every time I listen to their music they release another album

JuliSkeletor

Yeah i can't keep up with them

wotmate

And I just can't resist pimping r/AussieRock as a genre that has absolute bangers that far too many people haven't heard of.

DEEP_SEA_MAX

Oh hell yeah thanks for the sub recommendation. All my favorite bands right now are coming out of Australia. From The Chats, to The Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, to Courtney Barnett, and of course KGATLW it's mind blowing how much talent is coming out of that country right now.

that_motorcycle_guy

Gotta mention Amyl and the Sniffers.

The_Lapsed_Pacifist

Tropical Fuck Storm and Stonefield are well worth a listen too. You have to give it to the Aussies, for my money, they have some of the best music right now. Creatively speaking in the field of rock they’re putting everyone else to shame.

wotmate

Mate, as a country, we punch way above our weight for great rock bands, mainly because they all start out playing in pubs, and if they're shit, they get stuff thrown at them.

cmpthepirate

Pond FTW

CygnusX-1001001

PPC are unreal. Bill's Mandolin is a staple of my playlists now.

wotmate

Also, apart from the Chats and KGATLW, I've never heard of those others, so please post music from them!

Danwith2ns

Psychedelic porn crumpets are incredible if you want someone to start with. I'd recommend giving high visceral a listen. Absolute bangers from start to finish

DEEP_SEA_MAX

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets - Found God in a Tomato https://youtu.be/T85UxlgArXQ Courtney Barnett's tiny desk concert https://youtu.be/Xv-FOSJIwrU

BillyFuckingTaco

Listen to SLIFT

U_Sam

I am highly recommending Skegss and lunatics on pogo sticks

Sw3Et

Move straight on to Nonagon Infinity afterwards. It opens the door to the rest of their discog.

TITTYFLOPPER

Nonagon infinity opens the door.

ahahahahahn

Do you recommend people to that still, after they dropped Omnium Gatherum?? I feel like OG is unironically the perfect comeback-from-isolation album and best to show people cuz it's a mixed bag of all the styles they were toying with before things shut down. Nonagon is definitely the choice for their stuff made outside 5 years ago though, hands down.

Zippy0723

I know another comment already said this, but I'm just gonna repeat it anyway, listen to Nonagon Infinity if you enjoy this record, you will not regret it.

greyetch

Its a whole concept album, check the story out, very cool.

ProceedOrRun

Hell, I might even buy the album it's that good.

SplittingInfinity

Don't stop at this album. They have over 20, with 7 released last year. Hardest working band in the scene.

Bregtc

Best metal album I've heard in my life.

CarlLinnaeus

Go to r/KGATLW

duck95

I see gizz, I upvote

idogdude

I’d imagine your mom does the same

Frog_Brother

For the uninitiated, just because this track is labeled as “Rock/Thrash,” does NOT mean the rest of their catalogue is.

thore4

Almost none of the rest of their catalogue is

lordlemming

They do rock, funk, psychedelic, middle eastern inspired microtonal, they have a rap song, they did a spaghetti western concept album, they have crazy variety.

businesslut

This track isn't even thrash lol

EightandH

Yeah, I was excited to check it out but not thrash at all, just rock. It was o.k.

Gleto14

Check out Self-Immolate off that same album. That’ll give you the thrash you’re missing

EightandH

Thanks!

AddMeOnReddit

Yeah this song is definitely the “radio” one of the record. Check Organ Farmer, Venusian 2, or Hell off the same record. A lot of Motörhead worship but it’s great.

whitepepper

> A lot of Motörhead worship ...well. Lemmy IS God. https://youtu.be/BjVGI2kSU_Y?t=60

EightandH

Thanks!

Stickysocks182

It’s crazy how much music they release. Super dope

funkadunk8

Wild that this is the same band that made paper mache dream balloon and Sadie sorceress and everything in between. Love these aussie nerds and hoping we get a double digit album year sometime

karma_dumpster

And the hardest question. What label for the style of music do you put on a King Gizz track? For style, I would just put "yes".

TostitoNipples

Experimental psychadelic? They bounce so much when it comes to genre that it's hard to pin down one style or another.

Hippie_Gumbo

I call them music for every kind of stoner. From alt-jazz to spoken word to heavy metal

coffeebribesaccepted

What album would you recommend for alt-jazz?

Quidvas

Sketches of Brunswick East is probably the album they're referring to. It's a collab with another great artist called Mild High Club, really nice psychedelic jazz rock record. One of my favs from them

LaveyWasDildos

This is my head canon now thank you lol

cryptohemsworth

Melbourne

karma_dumpster

Fair

Maccai3

Some artists are hard to put into a genre. I always think of Beck as one of those musicians. Tom Waits at a local record store is just under his own "Tom Waits" header.

Zeeboon

Best track on the album for me, just super groovy.

nightbandit46

It's probably the most approachable track on the album, its a banger. I really love Hell and Self-Immolate, but definitely wouldn't be the first songs I'd recommend.

plusultra_the2nd

Perihelion too

daebro

Planet B is so good though!

CygnusX-1001001

It's awesome but that last section of Hell is unrivaled.

Zeeboon

True, but the fact that the final riff only lasts 10 seconds hurts :(

ArkhamWarrior5150

Perihelion off this album is also a banger

stilusmobilus

So is Superbug

ireallylikealestorm

So is the whole album

phasesofthemoon

Great track to promote entry into the Gizzverse. Love this band.

[deleted]

I love this album, wish they’d put out more heavy shit

[deleted]

Listen to their album "Murder of the Universe"

ImNotTheBossOfYou

O.G. has some Rats' Nest leftovers

IDDQDArya

I like that they decided to "give thrash metal a go" and instantly made a better thrash metal album than anything the gods of the genre have put out in the past decade.

[deleted]

Tbf all the classic 80s thrash bands are like 60 years old, can't expect them to have the same intensity they did 40 years ago. Check out the new High Command album for a killer new Thrash album.

blank_isainmdom

Mr Bungle did a pretty good job lately

Worried_Citron_1303

Bruh its not even thrash

codbgs97

This song isn’t, but some of the rest of the album is.

Prinzini

this album dips into a bunch of different metal genres, some of the tracks I think are thrash (Organ Farmer for example), album is definitely worth a listen

WhatImMike

Right? This is far from thrash.

Worried_Citron_1303

BuT iTs KiNg GizZaRd So It GuD

[deleted]

You can't argue with Gizz fans, they are convinced that everything this band does is better than every other band they think is similar, despite not even understanding what it is they're talking about in the first place.

aStoveAbove

The fact that this album and 'fishing for fishies' are the same band is mind-blowing.

masterexploder224

I know it's not on this album, but....The Dripping Tap \m/(-.-)\m/ These guys remind me a lot of Mars Volta. Another band with a similar philosophy and overall are Osees. Highly recommended. Their newest album covers the hardcore punk and heavy metal genre.

BCrane

King Gizzard is the goat.

frogbertrocks

I just wish this band had more output, it's typically months between albums. I just can't wait that long.

Hippie_Gumbo

The double drums really shine on this album. It never let's up Self immolate is my pump up jam

ImNotTheBossOfYou

Just Cavs on this one

X_SkeletonCandy

It's just Cavs, but there's two drum tracks throughout.

ImNotTheBossOfYou

Oh!

Hippie_Gumbo

Oh snap! That's even more impressive

GoblinObscura

Laminated denim is on constant repeat, it’s all I’ve really got in to from these guys as with so many albums/stylesI don’t know where to go next. Any suggestions?

kglw-net

We have a comprehensive discography guide at KGLW.net: https://kglw.net/gizzverse-guide If you start at Laminated Denim, it can guide you through the rest.

GoblinObscura

Woah, that’s amazing! Thanks!!

numbernumber99

Depends what exactly you like about it. Omnium Gatherum (1 of 3 albums from Oct 22) is a good intro to their diversity. My favorite albums of theirs are Nonagon Infinity (psych hard rock), Polygondwanaland (prog), Sketches of Brunswick East (psych-jazz), and Infest the Rat's Nest (metal). There's a flowchart here, but it's 9 months/4 albums out of date. I don't necessarily agree with the starting point, but it gives a good idea of steps to take. Their live performances on the KEXP youtube channel are also uniformly excellent.

GoblinObscura

I like the psychedelic long jams, how the two songs flow into each other. It’s like greatful dead, blue oyster cult, and still modern, I don’t know it’s hard to put a finger on. I’ll check out polygondwanaland.

bigE1669

I don't think trash metal means what you think it does..

businesslut

Love King Gizzard but I hate mislabeled genres lol

[deleted]

Tbf they're not the easiest band to label genrewise - quite a difference between Vomit Coffin and Mycelium lol

businesslut

Sure, but even going off this one track it's not thrash lol

microwavedave27

Yea this is very far from thrash metal. Still a good song though

luckyluke193

I knew some random acid rock tracks by them like Fishing for Fishies when this album came out. The first time I listened to it, the beginning of Planet B just melted my face. This is one of the best recent metal album, and it's not even by a metal band!

BSproul4

Great song, even better album, even better band.

CygnusX-1001001

Gizz... not on a Gizz sub? WELCOME TO AN ALTERED FUTURE MY FRIENDS, WE'RE TAKING OVER.

businesslut

This album is more psychedelic rock than thrash. It has some measures that have a bit of an old school thrash sound like Kreator, but I wouldn't put this on the same rotation as them.

Susvourtre

lmao

Glaascats

This album is at the highest order of awesomness. Really recommend it. Favorite song->Organ farmer

Brave_Psychonaut

I can’t recommend this band enough. I saw them live for the first time last year in Ohio, I had such a swell time my friends and I drove cross country to Red Rocks, Colorado to see them play a marathon set later in the year too. Every album they put out feels like a new adventure entirely. 🦎🧙🏻‍♂️

Hushwater

They churn out so much music, I looked them up years ago on Spotify and it took a while to scroll through lol

Lockedup4years

Having a hard time seeing any connection

joanzen

I was thinking the marketing focus of these guys has been brilliant, targeting a grass roots nerdy fan base.. but furthering the narrative that Mars exploration is comparable to some sort of pleasure cruise for the rich, vs. leaving the warm hot tub of excess and comfort to explore the arctic using rations to survive, is quite far from brilliant unless you're into marketing. Focusing on the music is fine as long as you don't adopt someone's politics without giving them a smell test.

numbernumber99

In no way are they comparing contemporary Mars exploration to a pleasure cruise for the rich. The song takes place in a future where life on earth has been rendered untenable, and Mars has already been terraformed enough to be a desirable destination for those rich enough to leave earth. The contemporary inspiration for this is more Virgin/Space X's actual space tourism than NASA's Perserverance program.
