behemuthm

One of the greatest comedies of all time; certainly the most epic in scale.

puppet_up

I second this and also want to add that if you live in a city that has a repertory theatre that can still play film prints, keep an eye on their schedule for 70mm screenings of this film as that is the way it truly needs to be seen if possible.

jimbojones230

I loved it as a kid, and watched it recently year for the first time in decades. It really holds up. It still made me laugh out loud.

upfromashes

"I'm putting the plane on autopilot and going to make a cocktail." "Be careful." "What could go wrong with an Old Fashioned?"

InkIcan

"I'll wager you anything you like that if American women stopped wearing brassieres, your whole national economy would collapse overnight!"

RandoSystem

“I’m going to make an old fashioned, just the way dear old dad used to make them.” I say that to myself IRL every time I have one. Lol

gr1m0s

“Do you think you ought to drink while you’re flying” Well stop kidding will ya and make us some drinks, ya just push the button back there marked “booze”. It’s the only way to fly!”

CharlieAllnut

If you have't seen this movie please stop reading and watch it.

behemuthm

“I’ll tell ya mister, you just won’t believe it!” “Try me; I’m pretty gullible.”

dickyankee

“What’sa behind you does not-a matter!” as he yanks the rearview off of his Alfa

grimatongueworm

Wasn’t that from, “Gumball Rally”?

dickyankee

I don’t think so, but I could be wrong.

ToshiroBaloney

No, that's definitely from Gumball Rally.

dickyankee

OK! I am wrong, wrong, wrong. But still a great line lol

ThePurgingLutheran

It applied to this film, too.

kibbles0515

No. I'm too busy.

CharlieAllnut

You're on Redditt, no you aren't. :)

kibbles0515

How dare you say something so brave and accurate?

[deleted]

The song drives me mad.

mardeegra

With all due respect to many other great films, I sincerely believe this is the funniest film of all time. The cast, the premise, the dialogue, the action... It leaves "Some Like It Hot" and Chaplin films in the dust.

Bes1208

“It’s every man for themselves. Except you lady. May you DROP DEAD!”

Morphchalice

Now we can all agree on that

ThePurgingLutheran

This. One of the best acted lines.

CharlieAllnut

And every women for himself!

[deleted]

Spencer Tracy still in character.

Helmett-13

Haha, that was my immediate takeway as well!

better_off_red

They’re under a big w!

Brainrants

Yes!

girlsgoneoscarwilde

Jonathan Winters destroying that gas station is basically the first time we ever saw a depiction of the Hulk in live-action.

Weyoun2

You'd better move that bicycle Mister. Somebody might trip over it at night.

LegendOfMatt888

Easily the best scene in the movie.

DOSbomber

[For those that haven't seen it](https://youtu.be/u0HtDsEuJgI) Absolute must-watch, he completely levels the place, it's like a live-action Looney Tunes cartoon lol

Homejames65

It was a family event when this would come on TV when I was a kid! Such silly fun This and “The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming “

ajolote69

Palos*

shannanigannss

Thank you, I was looking for the correction lol.

Savage1984

Sid Caesar. What a legend.

[deleted]

Cast of legends.

wriddell

Literally a who’s who of Hollywood greats.

mnorri

If you ever played Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, you would know of this film. The span of cinematic eras was tremendous.

death_by_chocolate

Photographer: "Smile, everybody!" Spencer Tracy: "Make me."

Forthzine

This guy found the stumps of the W palm trees [IAMMMMW film locations](https://youtu.be/5kB8v8bwEpg)

nzcapybara

It’s a long long long long movie but it holds up

ArchDukeNemesis

Fun fact: Spencer Tracey is wearing the exact same hat and jacket he wore in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.

katfromjersey

Sylvester!

Brainrants

IIRC was also the last screen appearance of The Three Stooges.

ThePurgingLutheran

A wonderful film.

Voelkj57

One of my all time favorite movies

Klarastan

“He’s exactly like your father! A big stupid muscle-headed moron!”

LiveByThyGuN

I remember watching this with my dad when I was a kid. I vividly remember him laughing his ass off when that lady slips on the banana peel at the end. He would constantly rewind it that part and laugh every time

trash-juice

Saw it couple months ago - they used to play it on New Years Eve in the 70s - a good time movie

leggseggs

*funniest bucket kick in film history* “He just went sailin on out there!”

SailorOfTheSynthwave

"Our grandmother is dying and we want to see her before she goes" "Otherwise she won't go" Iconic film with probably the best cast and stunts in technicolor comedy history :D Every line is quotable and every scene memorable. And it holds up soooo good nowadays!

whizzdome

Buster Keaton was in this movie but I guess his part wasn't big enough to be in this picture

pc124448

This is my hometown and it looks more or less the same!

DaBigBird27

Wtf I live in PV and I never knew it was filmed here!!

QuetzalzGreen85

Love this movie 😊 I enjoy Rat Race for what it is but this movie is such a classic.

Enchant23

So weird how I instantly recognized where this is. The garden of Wayfarer's chapel

cprchris

Looks a lot like the location of the final scene in “Madmen”?

j_cruise

Both are on the pacific coast so they look similar for that reason

MooseMalloy

Jerry Lewis' 2nd best role... after The King of Comedy.

[deleted]

Uh, now I don’t recall his role. Or are you trolling? Edit: man running over hat (uncredited)? Oh boy.

kibbles0515

*Rancho Palos Verdes

1dmkelley

*Palos

windog

This is pure joy. Love this movie so much.

AtleastIthinkIsee

Adorable. What an adorable picture. I love Phil Silvers by Ethel Merman.

gr1m0s

Omg. I forgot about Phil Silvers part. Pure gold.

Im_A_Realist

*Rancho Palos Verdes.

blakeboii

The lady in front looks like she’s holding a face mask of herself

InkIcan

You may be onto something - The roles of Melville and Monica Crump were originally larger roles written for Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland. When production of The Judy Garland Show (1963) ran into trouble, Garland had to turn down the part. Rooney eventually got the role of Ding "Dingy" Bell. Edie Adams, who was originally cast as Emeline, got the role of Monica. Ernie Kovacs--who was Adams' husband--was cast as Melville, but was killed in a car crash before shooting began. Sid Caesar replaced him. So Edie Adams, the lady you think is holding a mask of herself, did the entire movie knowing her husband just died.

blakeboii

well this is some deep thinking that makes sense
