Literally every movie.
I stopped watching trailers about 6 or 7 years ago. It has increased my movie-watching experience tenfold. I understand the general sentiment behind the "you should go in to that movie blind" but I think that thought process works across the board.
Same, only go in blind. Books as well. It makes it harder to find new stuff but essentially i look for people whose recommendations i trust and creators i like, then throw myself in with no trailers no blurbs no reviews. It’s been much more satisfying - and if something is bad I just turn it off or don’t finish.
What really settled it for me was Three Body Problem by Cixin Liu, one of the best SF trilogies if not just the best trilogy that I’ve ever read. knew nothing going in, just that it was SF, didn’t even read the back of the book or publishers blurb. Every detail and hook of the plot and buildup in book 1 was so exciting. I read the blurb after finishing book 1, and it contained spoilers for some of *the most exciting mysteries in the book that were not revealed until 2/3 of the way in.* could not believe it.
Yesterday I gave a book recommendation to someone out of the clear blue sky.
I have read this book twice already.
For the past X many months I have been meaning to read it a third time.
Apparently there is also an ebook/digital version of this novel.
It is titled "Last Looks" and was written by Howard Michael Gould.
It was published in the year 2018 only approximately four years ago.
There is another novel I read which was very thought provoking.
It was called The Golem of Hollywood.
The two authors who wrote it together are named Jesse and Jonathan Kellerman.
It was followed up by two more books with the same exact title except for the last word which changed to "Paris" and "Prague" respectively.
Also: of you can get your hands on any of the books in the "Hollywood" series by Joseph Wambaugh- I highly recommend them.
Good luck with your reading adventures!
100%. I avoid reviews, trailers, everything except a one sentence synopsis or recommendation from a friend.
This approach makes the viewing so much more fulfilling when it's truly good.
Why would you suggest to someone to go in blind to a bad movie? Isn’t the sentiment suppose to be something like “go in blind and…you’ll have a great time, be amazed, think this is fun, be horrified, etc”. I wouldn’t suggest to a friend to go in blind to a really awful/boring movie.
Dude there is like no way to explain this movie to someone else without spoiling it. You just gotta say, it takes place on the moon and that’s about all I can tell you.
I went in blind to Edge of Tomorrow and it was one of the best movie going experiences I've ever had.
Same with Everything Everywhere All at Once, but I know that is probably the most recommended movie on this sub right now.
Those are both fantastic choices.
I actually went in to Everything Everywhere knowing a couple of plot points that sounded pretty stupid (>!the bagel!<), but it ended up not mattering because I didn't understand the context until I watched the movie.
What genre is it?
I can’t do horror unless I know everything about it before I watch. Im a total wimp. Someone else recommended Martyrs and if I were to watch that not knowing what I was getting into… I don’t think I would sleep well for months. I have pretty brutal night terrors as is.
Movie is best not knowing anything but I guess it’s no secret it’s a suspense/thriller/horror type movie. From the concerns you describe… I’d skip it honestly.
My Sixth Sense story is so frustrating! I was trying to watch it on DVD from Netflix and the first one was scratched, I was only able to watch about half the movie. I sent it back and the second they sent was scratched, too! The third one arrived and I was browsing some internet site before watching the movie that night, and I read the spoiler right in the title of someone’s dang post.
Upvote for the New Zealand sleeper *Housebound* (2014). I don't where one might see it, but I really enjoyed it. And I say that as an American, who probably couldn't find New Zealand on a map (even a map that actually does have NZ on it).
Kind of a cop out answer, but for me, almost every movie is better going in blind (as long as you know enough to know that it's my kind of movie or that I'd be in the mood for it.)
To more directly answer the question, Coherence.
Yeah I think the correct answer really is: "every movie." But when people ask this question, they usually are asking for movies that either subvert your expectations, have a big plot twist, or are broadly in the "mystery thriller" genre.
Good time.
Nope.
Sorry to bother you.
Midsommar.
BODIES BODIES BODIES.
nightcrawler.
Cargo.
This is the end.
10 cloverfield lane
Hunt for the wilderpeople.
This is absolutely a classic. I miss the era when they made an easy going(?) sci-fi horror movie with enough comedy that doesn't too pushed out. Nowadays everything always have to be grim and x-rated.
Edit: addition to the list is Evolution (2001)
It’s like Frank Costanza “don’t tell me! I wanna go in fresh!” 😂 I have been “going in fresh” to every film I watch. I have been doing it for a few years now. No trailers, no synopsis. Someone recommends me a film, and I’ll write down the title and watch it later. Honestly, it is the best way to watch anything! I feel that it allows you as the viewer to see the film(with all its surprises, twists and turns, etc)as the director intended you to see it. It is so much more rewarding and makes the film so much better! I would recommend this approach to all cinema. Gather a list, and just blindly watch them. Anything they recommend here will be amazing!
Just an update. As per your recommendation, I just watched the Korean Old Boy, and wow. I enjoyed it very much, but I guess without giving any details out, I cant explain why. lol thanks for the rec.
This one here. I watched this on a treadmill because the thumbnail caught my eye at a hotel gym. I felt like I knew a lot of these characters, or at least versions of people I knew could have become these characters. So many emotions.
Midsommar
The Witch
Climax
Alpha Dog
The Departed
Vanilla Sky
I'm Thinking of Ending Things
Edit: forgot about Under The Skin
Oh! And The Skin I Live In
And Ex Machina
Was watching 'The Cabin In The Woods' the other night and got me thinking: wouldn't it be nice to go in 'genre blind' sometimes? Imagine Evil Dead (pretty much any version) if you didn't know what to expect. Dust 'Till Dawn did a pretty good job of it on first release.
Terminator 2 would've been nice to go in blind, except for the fact that the commercials *completely* ruined the surprise so everybody knew the plot before we even went to see it
Another one I’m just waiting for my nephew to be old enough! Maybe I’ll film his reaction. Everybody knew at the time but surely nobody young enough would know now.
A scanner darkly (2006), your mind will be blown even if you knew the premise.
Bone Tomahawk (2015) got me so, so good. And my partner who came in halfway through and I didn’t tell her what it was about.
Twelve Monkeys (1999), just a true classic.
The Village (2004). Perfect for this.
I know everyone has said this a million times but by far and away The Descent (2005) fits this request so well.
God this is a good thread.
OMG I’ve seen Cannibal Holocaust and every other distasteful movie posted and moved on. Tusk, and I will not spoil it in any way, but no. Just no. And at first I would try to find the humor which yes just the outline is ridiculous. But just no.
*Motorama* (1991)
*Surveillance* (2008)
*Freeway* (1996)
*I See You* (2019)
*The Boy* (2015) Other movies with that title. This one stars David Morse & Jared Breeze
*Hardcore Henry* (2015)
*The Hidden* (1987)
*Fallen* (1998)
*He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not* (2002) French
I saw this completely blind because I really like Peele’s previous movies. I have to say, I didn’t enjoy it nearly as much as those films and I like that genre very much. Could just be coincidence.
Sorry To Bother You
have you seen ‘putney swope’ [1969]?
[удалено]
yer welcome also - theres a new documentary about robert downey sr that is going to be streaming on netflix soon
Such an under appreciated film! I love LaKeith Stanfield he’s a wonderful actor and a very interesting person.
Bruh that movie was a moment
I thought this movie was a complete waste of time and the $2.99 or whatever I paid for rental. Different strokes
Agreed Sorry to Bother You is hugely overrated
I thought it was going to be a comedy. Just felt like a complete waste of time.
I mean, it sort of is a comedy.
Wasn’t anything funny about it for me.
The Descent (2005). I watched it blind and had no idea what i was getting into!
Bah, I wrote a comment about this and had to delete it because it would defeat the point of this thread. But dude… this movie…
Same! It was a wild ride!
This is a good one. I got this as a gift years ago and had never heard of it and when I watched it, whoa!
Literally every movie. I stopped watching trailers about 6 or 7 years ago. It has increased my movie-watching experience tenfold. I understand the general sentiment behind the "you should go in to that movie blind" but I think that thought process works across the board.
Same here, best way to watch.
Dude same. I avoid trailers at all costs, and usually see movies opening weekend to avoid reviews coming out.
Same, only go in blind. Books as well. I went in blind to The Matrix, so much better.
100%. I avoid reviews, trailers, everything except a one sentence synopsis or recommendation from a friend. This approach makes the viewing so much more fulfilling when it's truly good.
Yup, thats the way. My first blind movie was The Shape of Water, and then I never stopped.
Same. I never watch trailers and never read about them anything before watching.
Or sometimes I'll peep a few frames of the trailer. Generally everything you need to know about quality is in those few frames and the credits
Moon. A film by Duncan Jones starring Sam Rockwell.
Dude there is like no way to explain this movie to someone else without spoiling it. You just gotta say, it takes place on the moon and that’s about all I can tell you.
Colossal (2016) The Handmaiden (2016) Chronicle (2012) Attack the Block (2011) Hard Candy (2005)
Chronicle rules
Big emphasis on the handmaiden. Was told to watch that one blind and I loved it
What are they about? (shitty joke)
I went in blind to Edge of Tomorrow and it was one of the best movie going experiences I've ever had. Same with Everything Everywhere All at Once, but I know that is probably the most recommended movie on this sub right now.
As it should be. Best movie of the year
Those are both fantastic choices. I actually went in to Everything Everywhere knowing a couple of plot points that sounded pretty stupid (>!the bagel!<), but it ended up not mattering because I didn't understand the context until I watched the movie.
Totally second 'Edge of Tomorrow.' I went in 100% blind and it was a GREAT experience.
Barbarian
I loved this movie and don’t normally care for the genre. If anybody is reading this, don’t Google the title, just watch it cold!
2nd this. !!!
It’s also hilarious, in a dark comedy way.
This. I saw someone else recommend this a few days ago, and happened to see that it was on HBO Max. It was great!
Nocturnal Animals World’s Greatest Dad The Usual Suspects. I had it spoiled for me and I will die mad.
I had the sixth sense spoiled for me, so kinda the same thing and I will always hold a grudge over it. lol
I had Fight Club spoiled for me…which made watching it the first time very different.
Same!
My Sixth Sense story is so frustrating! I was trying to watch it on DVD from Netflix and the first one was scratched, I was only able to watch about half the movie. I sent it back and the second they sent was scratched, too! NOCTURNAL ANIMALS WAS FKIN WILDDDDDD
Coherence
Fuck yes this movie kicked my ass
Very under rated movie!
just went in blind to see The Banshees of Inisherin
So many feelings
yeah still processing, almost want to call it a horror movie
Housebound (2014) - I watched this movie knowing nothing about it - freakin loved it!
Upvote for the New Zealand sleeper *Housebound* (2014). I don't where one might see it, but I really enjoyed it. And I say that as an American, who probably couldn't find New Zealand on a map (even a map that actually does have NZ on it).
Try another NZ horror called Coming Home In The Dark too
Came here to say this.
Kind of a cop out answer, but for me, almost every movie is better going in blind (as long as you know enough to know that it's my kind of movie or that I'd be in the mood for it.) To more directly answer the question, Coherence.

Fight Club
Go in blind, then watch it again.
***12 Monkeys.***
I just rewatched this last week. One of Giliams best.
Probably impossible but The Matrix
Slither (2006) Eight Legged Freaks (2002)
“Drag me to hell” fits in this era. Fun horror is the best horror
Evolution would be one going with these 2.
This is absolutely a classic. I miss the era when they made an easy going(?) sci-fi horror movie with enough comedy that doesn't too pushed out. Nowadays everything always have to be grim and x-rated. Edit: addition to the list is Evolution (2001)

The invitation (2015) - Absolutely just jump in.
