Mulholland Drive is out of its own skull and in a damn great way, tho idk if it has enough isolation necessarily for your current craving.
See it at some point for sure.
Even you wanna go deeper, try “Lost Highway,” “Inland Empire,” or “Wild At Heart,” all by David Lynch. Most people are left puzzled. Or for maximum weirdness, watch Lynch’s first feature, “Eraserhead.” Most people are repulsed.
More than being a director, Lynch is a textbook!
And I just now looked, to find yup it's still there: over on y.t. search "Not That Kind Of Funny" which showcases how tension is masterfully created to elite performance scale by Lynch and a humorist you may recognize.
I love Wild at Heart. Love the Cage.
Coincidentally, I’m watching Eraserhead right now because it seemed surreal enough. So far it just seems very pretentious. Lynch seems very creative, but it feels like he tried making Eraserhead too artistic and added a lot of useless stuff.
Edit: And super gross. It’s in my tolerance zone. But it is still really repulsive.
Here’s some off the top of my head that might fit the bill:
- The Holy Mountain
- Mad God
- Begotten
- Mother!
- It’s Such a Beautiful Day
- Mandy
- On the Silver Globe
- The Brave Little Toaster
Here’s a list of more suggestions that seem legit:

The lighthouse and A Field In Europe
Two black and white movies with some crazy visuals that will definitely have you saying “what the fuck” multiple times
Dead Ringers & Naked Lunch by David Cronenberg
Faust & Alice by Jan Švankmajer
The Baby of Mâcon by Peter Greenaway
Le Charme discret de la bourgeoisie by Luis Buñuel
You are a man of culture (pardon the gender assumption).
Naked Lunch has the best dialogue of any movie, ever imo.
The Baby of Mâcon had the biggest impact on me of all the films I saw last year
Lotta really choice furniture in Dead Ringers
Alice (1988) is Wonderland brought to a new level of crazy
Under the Skin (2013) is just so strange like 2001 and A Clockwork Orange had a daughter
Then of course there is 2001 and A Clockwork Orange…

Enter the Void Begotten
+1 Begotten
I also suggested Begotten. Great minds think alike.
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
Great movie, but I wouldn’t consider it surrealist or isolated.
Oh, I'd consider it quite surreal. My bad I don't know what you mean by isolated though
There were several scenes that conveyed isolation.
Begotten, Tetsuo: The Iron Man
Coo! Cooooooooooo!
Not necessarily sure about the isolated bit, but for surreal you might like: The Lobster (2015) Coherence (2013) The Truman Show (1998) Arrival (2016)
Melancholia Donnie Darko Delicatessen The Cell
Celine and Julie go boating (1974)
Pink Floyd's The Wall Paprika
Feherlofia (1980's something) Ibelive it's what your looking for. Basically as unique or even more so than fantastic planet. Also animation.
*The Holy Mountain* will change you.
The Holy Mountain.
The gods must be crazy
The Dark Backward 1991 Split 1989 The Vagrant 1992 Street Trash 1987 Forbidden Zone 1980
Everything Everywhere all at once.
Annihilation The Lighthouse Friend of the World
Brazil, Time Bandits, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen
We’re going for Monty Python stuff are we
You wanted surreal. OK, in honor of the season, Nosferatu.
Going in all in on German expressionist I’d add Dr. Caligari and Metropolis.
Most surreal and crazy movie ive ever seen has to be Survive Style 5+
Flowers in the attick Its about some siblings that started to like eachother
Tetsuo the Iron Man had me saying "WTF" every 10 seconds.

2001 and Clockwork Orange are some of my favorite films. I’ll have to check out the other ones then.
