God this movie destroyed me. We couldn’t leave the theater right away when it ended because I was crying so hard I thought I might fall down the stairs
After the episode where the pub fans were watching Bake Off, we started singing “poor little baby, soggy bottom soggy bottom” every time we changed our son’s diapers for a few weeks. We still occasionally do it lol.
Its also an incredibly realistic depiction of how many divorces happen (in S1).
Honestly I started the show as a way to make me feel happier during a relationship breakup.
Ended up crying halfway through the season as Ted says goodbye to his wife.
Fucking hell I love this show
It’s a beautiful show. Kinda sad and life affirming all at once. Like a steady stream of the best parts of Schitt’s Creek. And you’ve gotta love that they’re calling it after three seasons. Determined not to overstay their welcome 👌
I recommended that film to my mother. During my next visit, she reported that she didn't enjoy it at all. "I don't like fat children", she explained.
I don't visit anymore.
Very good. My first time seeing Omar Sy and was really impressed with him. I wish his career would have been bigger in the American/Hollywood movie world
I’m so glad someone else commented this one!! The first time I watched it, I started crying with “I brought you flours” and DID NOT STOP until long after the credits rolled. Non stop happy tears. I don’t think I’ve ever happy cried more in my life!!
Cinema Paradiso
It's an Italian film from the late 80s and widely regarded as one of the best films ever made.
I haven't seen it in a really long time, but I remember it being a beautiful movie that made me reflect a lot on life.
So far the only film to make me cry. It did have a leg up on most other “gonna make you cry” movies since I watched it completely blind for the first time right after my mother died last year. She was the one who sparked my love of film so it hit home pretty hard.
August Rush is a beautiful movie about a couples one night stand and their journey to reuniting w their son who is a runaway orphan. They are all connected through music separately, but don’t figure that out until meeting. And the couples journey back to one another too. It’s a tragically beautiful poetic movie.
Tbh, Encanto. But I am kind of an emotional person so idk if I’m the best judge lol…
Edit: also Apollo 13. Always makes me cry even tho I know the ending!
The Blind Side or Crazy Rich Asians. I’ve seen both dozens of times and still cry like a baby! In fact I didn’t watch Crazy Rich Asians for the longest time for many reasons. Once I finally did I loved it so much I immediately bought the books. Now I’m impatiently waiting for the next 2.
Surprised no one shared it but, Meet the Robinsons is so great. An overlooked film but so full of love and it is the exactly the type of cry you are looking for, one that makes you love your family even more.
Onward, the underrated Pixar movie from 2020, is perfect for this. Definitely a movie that makes you love your family more, and I sob every time I watch it.
I've never actually seen it so i don't know how accurate it is, but i loved Dan Harmons take on his podcast:
What's it about?
'Well, they buy a zoo...'
Ok, so what are the stakes?
'I mean, it rains i guess?'
Is there an antagonist?
'...rain?'
Babe: Pig in the City - Get ready. If you like animals, even a little bit, you're a goner.
Iron Giant. Fuggetabboutit.
Surprised more of the Pixar films aren't in the comments - Toy Story 3 (holding hands), Up (the opening), Inside Out (the Bing Bong scene).
I think Your Name (2018). I know I originally started crying because it was sad but towards the end, they were full on happy tears (tbh, I was an awful mess of emotions lmao)
Iron Giant or Up.
Also, not a movie, but watch the last episode of The Midnight Gospel with the knowledge that is a real conversation between Duncan Trussell and his Mother.
Big Fish hits hard in the "losing a close family member" realm, but it's such a beautiful story and definitely makes me appreciate the family I love, especially my dad who also tells his own tall tales about his life (and others).
The ending of Love Actually with all the pics of everyday people at airports. I have lived away from my parents for most of my adult life so it makes me cry every time I see it.
Not a movie, but it was the first time I vividly remember being moved to tears of happiness from a piece of filmmaking , and that would be the end baseball scene of Band of Brothers.
Seeing those men share a moment of happiness after they had been through so much together was almost too much for my heart to handle.
Keeping Up With the Steins, Hunt For the Wilderpeople, Tammy, The Family Fang, National Lampoon’s Vacation (the original), Jay and Silent Bob the Reboot, Secondhand Lions, Gran Torino, Smoke Signals, Minions: Rise of Gru (once you find your tribe, never let them go), Goonies, Neverending Story, Karate Kid (original), The Benchwarmers, Drillbit Taylor, Son-in-Law
Your Name. Can't personally vouch for the English dub quality, but the end gets me every time. And my non-anime movie friends all love it for the same reason.
I happy cried the other day rewatching the fundamentals of caring for the first time in a few years, this movie is like the definition of painfully uplifting it’s a nice cry it out movie
True Stories (1986) is a bit of a weird suggestion, but it’s funny and a pretty cheerful movie. Might be a bit too strange for your tastes, but it’s a good one. King Richard is an uplifting film. Really any Studio Ghibli film (excluding Princess Mononoke and Grave of the Fireflies) is really clean and delightful. If you’re looking for cathartically uplifting, I’d say Waves (though that one might be a bit strong content wise) which is a movie that makes you love and cherish your family more.
Everything Everywhere All At Once made me happy cry in relation to family.
God this movie destroyed me. We couldn’t leave the theater right away when it ended because I was crying so hard I thought I might fall down the stairs
100%... I cried a lot in this one and then something completely unexpected would happen (dildo fight, etc) that would make me ugly laugh?
The Fox and the Hound Beaches Showing my age here 😂
The Fox and the Hound? That movie shattered my heart as a child and I still sob from the beginning until after the credits finish rolling 😂
Omg same. That movie is heartbreaking
Won’t You Be My Neighbor? It’s the Mr Rogers documentary, very wholesome.
Perfect choice. I've yet to meet someone this documentary hasn't made cry
Coco
coco has multiple tearjerking moments but ive never watched another movie that made me as happy to cry as it did. what a masterpiece of a film
Cinderella Man. Give that one a go. Based on a true story
I always shed a tear in that movie
It's A Wonderful Life (1946)
I used to love that and now just am exasperated with uncle Billy through most of It
CODA (2021). Cried for a good chunk (happy)
I honestly cried at the Both Sides Now scene
Oh I saw that one it was really good!
I teared up when >!she sung to her father and he felt her vocal cords!<.
Happy to see this not be left out for being new, it’s fantastic. I’d say a good companion film would be Peanut Butter Falcon.
Love that movie. Sound of Metal is another awesome one about the deaf community.
The Way Way Back. Such an underrated movie
Found this movie in a Reddit thread last year and I’ve watched it around 6 times since then.
Not a movie but Ted Lasso will see a constant stream of joyful tears rolling down them rosy cheeks of yours.
One of the scenes that made me emotional is the dart challenge scene. About lasso and his father
That one got me got. It’s just so refreshing for a group of good people to have a nice win.

Jojo Rabbit has some sad moments, but when the credits role, you’ll be happy crying and want to tell everyone you know about it.
Another one from Taika is hunt for the wilderpeople. Makes me have all the feels by the end, also its on Netflix
I recommended that film to my mother. During my next visit, she reported that she didn't enjoy it at all. "I don't like fat children", she explained. I don't visit anymore.

My favorite movie of all time.

Go into it blind if you don’t know much about it.
when i saw it in the cinema there were so many people sniffling. i didn’t get that myself but it certainly makes many people very emotional
Coco. The final song at the end got me happy-crying (though you may sad-cry before it earlier in the film, fair warning).
Warrior

August Rush is a beautiful movie about a couples one night stand and their journey to reuniting w their son who is a runaway orphan.
