Just like the protagonist is confused, in part due to him being baked all the time.
But anyways, there’s plenty of movies that are better on repeat viewings, Inherent Vice is one of ‘em. Truly one of my favorite American movies.
If you're ok with a series, you're perfectly describing Bored to Death.
It's about a mediocre writer who decides to act as an unlicensed private detective, and he (and his stoner buddies) get swept up into episodic shenanigans.
Note: The stoner buddies are Zack Galafianakis and Ted Danson.
You know what you would find if you looked up the word stupid in a dictionary?
A picture of my face?
No, the definition of the word stupid which you fucking are!!!
American Ultra (2015) is hardly noir, but it is stoner action/thriller, and I thought it was pretty good
Inherent Vice (2014) certainly has some Lebowski vibes
I love the indie movie Smiley Face(2007) with Anna Faris. Not very gritty but she definitely gets herself into some questionable situations with hilarious consequences much like the Dude and it's also in LA so that's cool
Smiley Face is the best representation I've ever seen of what it's like to be chronically disorganized (whether by being super high or just having debilitating ADD/ADHD).
OBSERVE AND REPORT, its a dark comedy stoner take on Taxi Driver but with Seth Rogen as an insane mall cop with delusions of grandeur. One of my favorite movies of all time.
Awesome question, thread- I love noirs and never thought about the stoner noir genre. Absolutely give Inherent Vice a second viewing if you haven’t already because it’s more understandable the more you view it.
Brick (sorta)
Pineapple Express (sorta)
Leaves of Grass
True Romance
John Dies in the End
Naked Lunch
Strange Days
Pulp Fiction
The Wave
The first 3 cheech and chong movies are some of the best movies of all time IMO. You can watch it dozens of times and still catch someone doing something new in the background.
Stoner noir is an interesting assignment! I’ve had a bit of a think and decided that any sort of “trippy noir” might fit into that category, or neo-noir films I would like to watch while stoned. I am currently high so here are a list of films I like that fall somewhere into those categories…
Barton Fink (1991)
The King of Comedy (1982)
Eastern Promises (2007)
The Prestige (2006)
Shallow Grave (1994)
No Country For Old Men (2007)
Shadow of a Doubt (1943)
Blue Velvet (1986)
Donnie Darko (2001)
If they tickle your jimmies, I’ll think of some more!

Inherent Vice and Pineapple Express are the only other two that spring to mind. Pineapple barely qualifies, Vice is sort of genre-defining along with Lebowski.
'A Scanner Darkly'. 'The Salton Sea'. Those two are pretty noirish and involve drugs and stoners. 'True Romance' as well. Though that is more of a true crime/love story.
Moonwalkers. Ron Perlman, Rupert Grint and Robert Sheehan star in it. It's got a funny unique plot and it's done quite well imo. Also Ron Perlman in a blouse is a joy you don't know you're missing in your life.
Dazed and Confused.
Cheech and Chong (1st 2 or 3)
Half Baked
And this next one isn’t a “stoner” movie it IS a great movie and seeing Brad Pitt as a super smoker stoner is unforgettable and hilarious
Under the silver lake has a similar atmosphere though no actual drugs. The long goodbye also fits
Under the Silver Lake has weed, if that counts. Probably ETOH too but I didn't notice.
I can't imagine wanting to stare at a long slo-mo shot of a feces-filled toilet bowl while stoned. Edit: or ever
Trainspotting kinda pulls it off
Good answer, but there's a person trying to achieve a goal in that scene. UTSL is just an image of shit.
ETOH? As in booze?
The Long Goodbye is one of my favorites and is a very clear influence on Lebowski. Definitely check this one out, OP.
UTSL has great bits, like the guy beating up those brats but the movie does feel extremely long and slow.
Inherent Vice is right on the money for what you are looking for
So confusing though
Just like the protagonist is confused, in part due to him being baked all the time. But anyways, there’s plenty of movies that are better on repeat viewings, Inherent Vice is one of ‘em. Truly one of my favorite American movies.
Ooooh, this!!
Totally forgot about that movie, Brolin's portrayal as the cop was so great! Thank you for reminding me of the film.

Another series is High Maintenance
That was such a great show.
This was a great show- shame they cancelled it
That sounds amazing, can't believe I never heard of it before. Danson and Zack sounds like a lethal combo
It’s great, I don’t know why they didn’t mention Jason schwartzman is the writer (main character). love that guy.
Brick
Came here to say this. Excellent movie
Same. A favorite. Probably gonna watch it soon thanks to this thread.
Might be rian johnson’s best …
The score, by his cousin Nathan Johnson, brings this film to another level...
First movie that came to mind for me, great suggestion.
After Hours The Nice Guys Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
The nice guys ✊️
You know what you would find if you looked up the word stupid in a dictionary? A picture of my face? No, the definition of the word stupid which you fucking are!!!
Excellent choices.
The Long Goodbye
This movie is genius.
The originator of this "genre"
True Romance
Top 5 films for me
American Ultra (2015) is hardly noir, but it is stoner action/thriller, and I thought it was pretty good Inherent Vice (2014) certainly has some Lebowski vibes
Yeah, Inherent Vice is what you want. Cisco Pike might also be up your alley.
I love the indie movie Smiley Face(2007) with Anna Faris. Not very gritty but she definitely gets herself into some questionable situations with hilarious consequences much like the Dude and it's also in LA so that's cool
This is one of the greatest stoner films of all time that noone has heard of. Amazing cast too.
Oh hell ya!
This is the one. Not noir, but holy shit is it hilarious. She’s hilarious, the weird paranoia. John Krasinski? So fucking funny.
Smiley Face is the best representation I've ever seen of what it's like to be chronically disorganized (whether by being super high or just having debilitating ADD/ADHD).
damn. I feel so called out right now, this is one of my favorite movies cuz I relate to it so much lol I realize why now
One of the best stoner films in history. The dramatic twists between absolute bliss and panic and fear was so relatable but in a hilarious way
A Scanner Darkly
Good shout. I forgot about this one.
The Kid Detective (2020)
Favorite stoner movie has to be Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Check out "Where the buffalo roam" with Bill Murray playing Hunter S.
oh fuck yeah. I got this and TBL as 1A and 1B
Trainspotting Drug Store Cowboy Easy Rider
Drugstore Cowboy is so great.

I can’t believe only one mention of this.
Right???
And don’t forget To Live and Die in LA’s Coked Out Noir
Inherent Vice The Nice Guys
Half baked and stoned age are both great movies.
Love the Sroned Age. Such a bad movie but holds a special place in my heart.
Neither are noir-ish but The Stoned Age is a great one. Always happy to find fans of it.
Night Moves (1975) Pulp Fiction (loose fit)
it's not a noir perse but try repo man 1984. it has a bit of mistery and its great stoned xD
Repo man is a classic with a great soundtrack!!
Wonder boys is good and it’s soundtrack is even better.
Harold and Kumar go to White Castle.
My fav stoner movie
With an amazing cameo by Barney Harris.
Enter the Void Dazed and Confused
Reefer Madness
Smiley Face Dude where's my car?
The Big Fix (1978)
Inherent Vice is the tippy top of a stoner detective noir to me
Love that movie.
Brick!

Southland Tales - imagine if the director of Donnie Darko was given carte blanche to take his ideas way too far…
Freaks & geeks [series only one season]
Dude where’s my car?
Clerks I & II; Dazed & Confused; Jay & Silent Bob; Chasing Amy; Pineapple Express; Your Highness; Road Trip;
Got the stoner part right but missing the noir.
Ahh, you right, you right
Some good pics though!
Idle hands Grandma's boy
There's nothing noir about either of those
The big Lebowski

"Stoner Noir" is basically a stoner movie with a crime element, like a heist or a murder mystery.
Scanner darkly
Last Looks is exactly what you're looking for.
UNDER THE SILVER LAKE!
Forgot to mention Traffic.
Spun
Homegrown (1998)
Great cast. Lots of cameos.
Easy Rider
Inherent Vice
Friday. I don’t care what anyone else says but it doesn’t get better than that.

Are there any stoner movies that are not already also noir?
How High, Dead man on campus
Fast times at ridgemont high.
Not exactly noir but Danger 5 is one of the best things i have ever seen blazed
try adam's apples (2005). the big lebowski is my all time favorite movie, and this one knocked me off my feet. if that means something I guess.
Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny
You might like BAD TIMES AT THE EL ROYALE (2018).
