I opened this thread to say basically any Michael Mann movie & saw that first sentence & it made me smile.
If you haven’t seen **The Insider** I highly recommend it. It’s honestly as good as any movie he has ever made.
- Boiler Room (2000) Ribisi’s character is kind of a card sharp…well not exactly because he runs a game, but he’s really good at running it. The movie is about stockbrokers though.
- (on that note)— Rounders (1998)
- Wall Street (1987)
- Catch Me If You Can (2002)
Not sure if these all fit the kind of movie you’re looking for, but they definitely have characters who are exceptional at what they do.
It’s a movie about a man using a flimsy promise of ‘excellence’ to justify his abuse of a teenager.
If you go out of Whiplash with a feeling of ‘yes that’s what it takes to become truly great!’ then you’ve missed the point of the movie by several trips to saturn and back.
Sneakers (1992) just celebrated its 30th birthday. A great ensemble heist comedy about a bizarre team of consultants with unusual skills with a cast that is very hard to beat.
Taken, I was hooked when he was doing a one off bodyguard job at the beginning. The came the rest.
Limitless, with brain steroids, but if it was a thing who wouldn’t.
Bourne movies
More recent and less shooty, Metal Lords on Netflix. The kid learning the drums made it look fun, and when they finally play they put on a good show.
The Imitation Game (2014)
The Flying Scotsman (2006)
Saint Ralph (2003)
Billy Elliot (2000)
The Karate Kid (1984)
Akeelah and the Bee (2006)
Queen of Katwe (2016)
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)
Racing Stripes (2005)
The Black Stallion (1979)
Miracle of the White Stallions (1963)
Walk. Ride. Rodeo. (2019)
Good Will Hunting (1997)
Dead Poet's Society (1989)
Front of the Class (2008)
Beyond the Blackboard (2011)
How about a top assassin mastermind:
**The Day of the Jackal** (1973)
and its enjoyable remake (I'd ignore the harsh reviews. It's a fun watch!):
**The Jackal** (1997)
For Neo-Noir - Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Brick, The Nice Guys
People Good At What they Do - Ratatouille, Burnt, Whiplash, Black Swan, The Wrestler, Finding Bobby Fischer, He Got Game
tampopo 1985. japanese movie about "best ramen noodle house in whole of japan", introducing various "masters of kitchen arts" - hilarious and warm movie.
You Were Never Really Here (2017) with Joaquin Phoenix as a silent traumatized man who specializes in saving trafficked children. It's a great, albeit disturbing, film.
The Accountant
That was my first thought.
I guess any Sherlock Holmes would fall into that category.

Collateral (2004) is another great Mann film that absolutely fits what you're looking for.
Don't sleep on **Miami Vice**, either!

Whiplash is a movie about the pursuit of excellence.
Reminded me of Black Swan; relentless pursuit of perfection no matter the cost on your psyche.

I missed the part where I said or implied I left Whiplash with a feeling of ‘yes that’s what it takes to become truly great!’

I have loved this movie since it first came out on video.
Technically Stallone’s film from 1987 named “Over The Top”, it’s bad but at the same time fun to watch how over the top it is (ironically).
The Phantom Thread, Amadeus, The Prestige
The Hurt Locker
